How are Pakistan's buses painted into beautiful art? | AJ Shorts

- Mohammed Rafiq has been painting Pakistan's colourful buses for 40 years, but there's a dark side to the industry.
Like millions of his compatriots, Rafiq started work at the age of 12, missing out on education and exploited as a child labourer. "We would put our heart into it," said Rafiq, recalling his early days as a bus painter.
"Nowadays the apprentices come and just see it as a day job," he sighs, sitting on a plastic chair on the muddy tarmac as Pakistan's now iconic colourful buses roll by.
He picked up painting quickly and gained notoriety for his skill, drawing beautiful scenes on the buses that would travel across the country. "My work spread all over Pakistan. But we didn't get much money per bus."
More than 40 years of working without any safety equipment or precautions have taken their toll. At 69 years old, Rafiq's lungs are now failing. "This sickness is because of the paint, the chemicals, thinners, petrol fumes," he explains, gasping for breath.

He was valued among his people, everyone loves him, I'm certain that once literacy increases there will be alot more opportunities for better work in my country and the best thing is that this old man knows this and many people will want to have their children educated.
And one days our bus designs and will be even more beautiful and the environment people will work in will be much safer.

I was always intrigued by these beautiful designs on Pakistani buses and Trucks, being Indian we just see some boring graffiti on our buses and trucks are even uglier. So sad to know this art is dying. Pakistan can revive this art by using it on their railways and on newer fleet of buses.

Ma shaa Allah. i seen such beautiful artwork on the buses when i went to Pakistan. and i wish he didnt say fate wasnt on his side. Allah gives everyone a different life. some have it better than others. the ones who are blessed enough to have more than others suppose to give zakat, and then the ones who are poor would have more. Allah tests the rich with their money. what will they do with their blessings? so no one should like they were unfortunate in life. Allah tests those He loves the most... and pakistani people are the most kind and caring people i ever met. so very happy even when they have little they will give what they can to you and the time i spent was with pashtoon people, in peshawar, and they had the best hospitality in the world and are renown for it as well. but overall pakistani people are really just great. and i added this for the simple fact that those who want to come and trash talk pakistan, i am american and loved the people of Pakistan.

Y'all don't have money to copy other designs, how do you think you'll handle yourselves on your own designs ? I mean leave metro trains alone, you can't maintain a bus properly

I knew him , His name marked on every bus and truck as M.Rafiq KAKA spray painter and artist.H lives in Abdullahpur Faisalabad. He painted and design my first bus in 1979 when he was newcomer in this field. That time he got from me 800 rupees but market price was 1000-1200 rupees

Nicely showed how life of painters are affected by paints and chemicals ... sad to see that he was suffering from his childhood and now he is not able to save any thing and what is left is also going for medicine. Hope he will feel better soon and lead a normal for rest of his life.

I doubt a little bit that paintint a bus in such detail is only 3 days.
Don't know why it got mistranslated, but he says he painted 50 000 trucks and not 5000 as written in the subtitles. "Panj" means 5 while "panja" means 50 in Punjabi
