I dont think of him as the leader, but rather as the guy that carries the team when needed And Id rather say he has the most neutral morality, making him perfect mercenary. He may have code of honor, but to him, unless you hurt him, or people he likes, he might as well sell himself to the highest bidder, as hes still a soldier of fortune, to whom killing is just a chore, but hes good at it, and thus takes pride in it.

Engineer is in the battle ground to test and perfect his buildings. He gets his pay from upgrading the life extender machines and by selling some of his creations (i think this one was confirmed in a Mann Co. newspaper) to major companies. So he's fighting only for the killing.
@@nathangamble125 if he wasn't a psychopath he wouldn't be going to the actual battlefield with a shotgun, he would just sell his turrets to whichever team pays him more
@@Alex-vl1mk In the comics, he's unsure about joining the team _until_ he's told he can use his Sasha to mow down plenty of bad men, wherein he immediately exclaims that he's back in Team Fortress (2)
There are many mercenaries who, because their countries are poor and they see that the work pays quite well, or because they have an illegal status, it is much more convenient for them to be a mercenary.
I would disagree with Demo and Heavy's position -Heavy takes *_A lot_* enjoyment from mowing down hordes of enemy mercs, as seen in Meet the Heavy, "Mostly for money." -Demo takes pride in his job and tries to make his ma proud, and he also seems very amused in his domination lines, "Mostly for money."
But would they still be doing this if it didn't pay well? I would say no, heavy and demo seem to like their jobs but it's not their passion. Heavy seems to be less into killing people and more into just shooting his gun, and demo just likes blowing stuff up, human or not. They arent doing this stuff just to kill people they're killing people so they can do the things they like.
Preeeetty sure Sniper is in it for the money, you're right. He's just rather depersonalised and has contempt for his fellow man, but finds the headshot itself satisfying. He is after all, a professional. That's honestly the big thing about him. That's what makes it hard to say, but I imagine he is just here for the pay, along with trying to have a living.
the fact that the mercs probably have different salaries actually made me sad lol but it makes sense: i think its less about their roles since theyre a team and more about scummy labour practices from RED and BLU. they should start a union or... maybe they have contracts like sports teams and get paid based on performance?? which would still leave RED and BLU with a lot of power to underpay certain mercs simply bc they can. ...goddamn. great video man, got me thinking too deeply abt labour laws within the hat simulator game 😂
i personally think heavy should go in mostly killing, because unlike demoman, theres a huge emphasis for his passion of his gun. If you were to directly compare their meet the team videos, heavy's is focused on his love of his gun, whilst demos is focussed on how he values his job
@@thegreatgoobert5847 yea but he also loves just like mowing people down. like in the 5th or 6th comic where they get their guns back and mow down robots

Why bother looking deeper? He's good at playing the fool.
I think mercs like Pyro, Medic, and Engineer can be safely placed into "for the killing" since they could easily make just as much, if not more money with other jobs but they choose to be mercenaries
Remember the bear incident in the comics, Pyro sees the world through pyrovision, but he 110% knows what's actually happening and what she's doing. Seeing one of the bears as Smokey, the second the bear says "Fire is no one's friend" Pyro gets really pissed and axes the bear to death That said Pyro does seem to care about money having gotten a mundane job after manco fell, so i wouldn't say its solely about the killing, even though pyro has the means of getting money elsewhere its far better getting paid doing something you love rather then something you hate. I'd say they're here for both, maybe a little more of the violence side but money is certainly a part of it
Pyro is 100% male, it's confirmed by his voice actor being male and his concept art. The female hints in his trailer video and comic thing is just valve openly mocking the fandom for coming up with such ridiculous theory.
Scout: Money and passion Soldier: War Pyro: Seems to be going with the flow, and trying to do what makes him happy Demoman: Money for family Heavy: Money for family Engineer: Legacy and passion Medic: Experimentation, and funds for more experimentation Sniper: Money for a living Spy: Money for tastes and to look after the scout
I understand your reasoning for Medic. But I feel like you should still put him closer towards the “doing it for fun”. Yes, he joined the TFC mercs because they pay him more. But he seems to spend it all (or at least a lot of it) on experiments. (Which he does for fun) And it also implies that he STILL was 100% willing to work for the red team, even if they weren’t paying him enough to buy organs. Also don’t forget, he joined the TF2 team again, after he revived sniper.
Pyro is in it for the killing. He doesn't know he's in it for the killing because he doesn't see that, but whatever he does see equates to the killing in the real world.
I think that's why the theory that he's looking after Scout makes sense. Out of all the mercs (except maybe Engie) Spy is the most obviously overqualified for his position. He could easily be in team Echelon, or Bastion or whatever - those elite teams that Saxton sells all the *real* guns to. But he stuck with Fortress because... well it's about as high as Jeremy will go.
I feel like it would’ve fit better if this was an analysis on each of the mercenaries deeper motivations for being on the team rather than being than a tier list.
I dont quite agree with Demo, in the comics he seems to be seriously depressed about losing his job to machines, and jumps right back on the occasion to get it back, while other jobs seemed uninteresting So yeah money is a big factor but i'd say he's mostly in for the money, not 100% just that
Pyro should be a very easy case considering you actually include both killing and fun into consideration. Regardless of whether or not he understands he's killing people, we see that things that kill people (especially fire) are translated into Pyrovision as things that cause him joy, while being a CEO does not.Incredibly clear cut case of "in it for the fun", the hard part is defining what that fun is exactly.
I think scout should be in atleast mostly fun. "Investing" your money in merch that is expected to go up in value is different from typical investing as you are buying it primarily with the money allocated in your finances for fun and the profits are a bonus
How do you think Pyro would react if his Pyro vision was fixed and told and shown all those people he thought he was helping he burned alive? Considering pyro even without the pyro vision would most likely still be very mentally and emotionally unstable I can only imagine how traumatic it would be for him.
I feel like the big issue I have with spy being there for the money at all is the fact that given how good he is at his job, he could go literally anywhere and get paid just as much, if not more due to his skill.
@@drakencroger5103the man is very skilled yes, but he’s clearly not too well based on the fact that he lives in a van, pees in jars, and says some pretty messed up stuff

3:03 Why does no one bother to actually read that line? It clearly states he went to Poland and started to kill random civilians, which makes it so much worse
I would say, the whole "enjoys/takes pride in their job" argument is rather irrelevant because it's literally a game about mercenaries - of course, they all have broken moral compass.

Good vid. Same conclusions I'd have reached tbh (I haven't read the comics, just heard friends in the TF2 community discussing them). Off topic, I like the war paint on your Iron Bomber ^_^
Demo is only working for Mannco for the money, but he takes hella pride in his work and could probably find legit demolitions work anywhere else but none that would pay as good. Soldier is probably really poorly paid cause the Admin or whoever drafted his contract is taking advantage of him, similiar thing with Pyro. They're both very dangerous very skilled people. But Mannco was hiring from the short bus that day
I think Heavy and Medic should be alongside Engie. Heavy's lines in game show that he really likes mowing down people with his gun, though I believe he signed up primarily to help his folks. And Medic really likes money. He's super excited about getting money from the robots in MvM for example.
Spy and Sniper both are examples of "if you're good at something , never do it for free" And Heavy, Demo, Engi and Spy show that just because you're in for the money doesn't mean you can't be proud of what you do and enjoy it. That is basically what we all look for. A job that can fund us that we also like doing.
Pyro is definitely in it for the killing, as his large company made his « world » bland and boring, without colors. He believes he has fun with everyone when killing, and, as seen in the comic A Cold Day In Hell, he is *likely* capable to be aware that he kills (mainly due to how he reacts towards the bear warning him about fire).
I'd put Engineer more on the killing-side. That psychopathic smile as he watches an enemy off-screen get blown to pieces in meet the engineer, did it for me Engineers complete calm bloodlust makes me think that engineer is supposed to be some psychopath but great vid. Keep it up!
4:47 a explosives expert does not need to be killing all he needs to do is explode what he is told to explode i think demo is only doing for the money, one job he explodes buildings the other he explodes people all in a days work
A lil add on near 1:10, I remember reading somewhere (Post by valve or somethin I forgot) that apart of the reason he's in it is to make money for his mom
I think you might be a bit confused on the Demoman part. That article from him was about the top 10 house cleaners that won’t kill you if you drink them. And the part about Pyro could be boiled down to him only being in it for the “fun” since Pyroland makes it seem like everyone is just having fun. He probably thinks he’s getting paid to both babysit and play with children if “Meet the Pyro” is anything to go by.
Pyro is a complicated character because while it is true that he thinks he's making people happy with his fire, she also understands that fire is dangerous and hurts people. This is a contradiction that could, emphasis on could, be understood by saying that while Pyro knows he's hurting others it believes they are spreading its joy to others like this. Either way, Pyro probably is in partly for the money and partly to have an excuse to set everyone on fire. He's not a mumbling idiot, if anything the comics have shown that he acts the way she does only because they can, and that's it.
I think Pyro's writing is kind of weird and inconsistent at times in general, but by god are they still my favorite character. The power of hyperfixations make anything possible.
Thing about demoman is, he takes pride in his work because the DeGroots are a family dedicated to the art of explosives, he was put into an orphanage because his parents doubted he was a DeGroot until he was seven when he blew up the orphanage
2:30 Less PTSD and more like delusions of grandeur. Remember Soldier has never actually taken part of combat outside of his work as a merc, something he seems to love doing.
I agree Scout is a bit of both as well but I also believe he's doing the investment part for his mom since he was worried that he was going to lose all the money he saved/ invested and he mentions his mom would be distraught if that were to happen.
The pyro is easy to answer though. You already said it's killing OR fun. Pyro's just having a blast; though they might like a bit of the pay here and there to spend on fun things.
How to make a good friend dynamic according to tf2: mello and sane character with loud, crazy and insane character. Like engineer and Pyro or heavy and medic. It's actually a good friend dynamic for characters tho
Sniper was the most obvious one, since he flat out tells his Dad it's just a job in his Meet The trailer. Even if you haven't touched the comics, you know it's just money for him.
I would have put medic in the mostly in it for the killing tier because while yeah, the money helps him do his experiments, it is simply a means to an end for him. The money is nice, but it's simply not what he's /really/ there for
I'd move Heavy down a tier. His primary goal is helping out his family but he also appears to take *way* more pride in his, well... weapons than Demo. It's the only thing he's compelled to talk about in his introduction video and the Meet the Director comic. He even gave it a nickname and made a little bed for it. He's usually very down to earth and calm but becomes very loud and zealous on the battlefield. Heavy acts similarly while fighting a bear in the comics - he's doing it to feed his family but he's also having a blast while doing so. The exact same thing can be said about his job
Scout 1:10
Soilder 2:18
Pyro 3:15
Demo 4:04

And Id rather say he has the most neutral morality, making him perfect mercenary.
He may have code of honor, but to him, unless you hurt him, or people he likes, he might as well sell himself to the highest bidder, as hes still a soldier of fortune, to whom killing is just a chore, but hes good at it, and thus takes pride in it.

been noticing a lot more of people making content looking more into the life of the mercs and its something im all for good work with this one
This video is basically "Let's see how ethical a group of killers are" and it's great
Engineer is in the battle ground to test and perfect his buildings. He gets his pay from upgrading the life extender machines and by selling some of his creations (i think this one was confirmed in a Mann Co. newspaper) to major companies. So he's fighting only for the killing.
Not just killings but also get to test his machines on battlefield situations
Surely fighting for test data, not for the sake of killing?
So he should be in the “mostly killing” spot. Plus he needs money for materials to build unless the company provides him with it

Heavy is enjoying his job to a comical level
So don’t just put him in the “in it ONLY for the money” category
I don't think so. If the job didn't pay well then he would NEVER do it, the way I see it the killing is just a really nice bonus

I would disagree with Demo and Heavy's position
-Heavy takes *_A lot_* enjoyment from mowing down hordes of enemy mercs, as seen in Meet the Heavy, "Mostly for money."
-Demo takes pride in his job and tries to make his ma proud, and he also seems very amused in his domination lines, "Mostly for money."
demo does it for thrill with money involved, probably because of worsened decision making due to being eternally drunk

That's what makes it hard to say, but I imagine he is just here for the pay, along with trying to have a living.
the fact that the mercs probably have different salaries actually made me sad lol but it makes sense: i think its less about their roles since theyre a team and more about scummy labour practices from RED and BLU. they should start a union
or... maybe they have contracts like sports teams and get paid based on performance?? which would still leave RED and BLU with a lot of power to underpay certain mercs simply bc they can.
...goddamn. great video man, got me thinking too deeply abt labour laws within the hat simulator game 😂
The mercs starting an union would make for a good Team Neighborhood episode.
@@CativaCookie
Blu soldier and red demo come up with it, definitely
They probably take advantage of Soldier and Phyro's questionable mental health to pay them less.
i personally think heavy should go in mostly killing, because unlike demoman, theres a huge emphasis for his passion of his gun. If you were to directly compare their meet the team videos, heavy's is focused on his love of his gun, whilst demos is focussed on how he values his job
But The killing isn't the point, it's using his gun. Death is just a side effect of that.
@@thegreatgoobert5847 yea but he also loves just like mowing people down. like in the 5th or 6th comic where they get their guns back and mow down robots

Seeing one of the bears as Smokey, the second the bear says "Fire is no one's friend" Pyro gets really pissed and axes the bear to death
That said Pyro does seem to care about money having gotten a mundane job after manco fell, so i wouldn't say its solely about the killing, even though pyro has the means of getting money elsewhere its far better getting paid doing something you love rather then something you hate. I'd say they're here for both, maybe a little more of the violence side but money is certainly a part of it
I love that you say he she and they since it’s still 100% percent unconfirmed lol
I don't think pyro is female
@@cosmic5665you don't need to :3
@@cosmic5665he's male
Pyro is 100% male, it's confirmed by his voice actor being male and his concept art. The female hints in his trailer video and comic thing is just valve openly mocking the fandom for coming up with such ridiculous theory.
Scout: Money and passion
Soldier: War
Pyro: Seems to be going with the flow, and trying to do what makes him happy
Demoman: Money for family
Heavy: Money for family
Engineer: Legacy and passion
Medic: Experimentation, and funds for more experimentation
Sniper: Money for a living
Spy: Money for tastes and to look after the scout
I mean, heavy does also enjoy using his gun, so he is mostly in it because it pays, but he also gets a good deal of satisfaction out of it.
Let us not forget his sadistic delight in ripping engi's fingers off.
But he stuck with Fortress because... well it's about as high as Jeremy will go.
i don't think many people would work in a fast food joint, even if they were absolutely mad about fast food...
love these kind's of videos, keep em up!
Heavy: there to help provide for his family.
Pyro: has nothing better to do.
5:08 ah yes youtube my favorite tf2 class "NG Grease Monkey"
great video btw, just found your channel and i'm loving your discussions on tf2 mercs!
I feel like it would’ve fit better if this was an analysis on each of the mercenaries deeper motivations for being on the team rather than being than a tier list.
Medic even has an MvM line in which he screams at the top of his lungs: "FREE MONEEEEY"
I dont quite agree with Demo, in the comics he seems to be seriously depressed about losing his job to machines, and jumps right back on the occasion to get it back, while other jobs seemed uninteresting
So yeah money is a big factor but i'd say he's mostly in for the money, not 100% just that
Pyro should be a very easy case considering you actually include both killing and fun into consideration. Regardless of whether or not he understands he's killing people, we see that things that kill people (especially fire) are translated into Pyrovision as things that cause him joy, while being a CEO does not.Incredibly clear cut case of "in it for the fun", the hard part is defining what that fun is exactly.
Pyro immediately gives up on being a CEO for the opportunity to start playing with fire again so it's definitely just for fun.
Excellent content for such a new youtuber, keep it up man!
I think scout should be in atleast mostly fun. "Investing" your money in merch that is expected to go up in value is different from typical investing as you are buying it primarily with the money allocated in your finances for fun and the profits are a bonus
Honestly fascinating video, never thought of this idea! Good job!
I think pyro might be also for the hire because depending on if you take it cannon or not, Evil Genius 2 let’s you hire him as a henchmen. So
How do you think Pyro would react if his Pyro vision was fixed and told and shown all those people he thought he was helping he burned alive? Considering pyro even without the pyro vision would most likely still be very mentally and emotionally unstable I can only imagine how traumatic it would be for him.
I feel like the big issue I have with spy being there for the money at all is the fact that given how good he is at his job, he could go literally anywhere and get paid just as much, if not more due to his skill.
The comics say that team fortress is the lowest of the selection, a joke in the mercenary world, which makes him and sniper stand out a lot more
@@drakencroger5103the man is very skilled yes, but he’s clearly not too well based on the fact that he lives in a van, pees in jars, and says some pretty messed up stuff

@@drakencroger5103But that is not because they are unskilled, its because of the Mann Brothers and the Third Gravel War. Team Fortress IS skilled (if extremely unreliable), but it is dedicated to fight a worthless war that not even Hale cares about, besides using it to test weapons.

I would say, the whole "enjoys/takes pride in their job" argument is rather irrelevant because it's literally a game about mercenaries - of course, they all have broken moral compass.
Let’s fucking go lonq, I knew since the spy video u we’re gonna make it big, this amount of growth in this time is insane and you really deserve it! I mean you’ve been pumping out high quality videos quick. Don’t forget me when ur famous
Spy and Sniper both are examples of "if you're good at something , never do it for free"
And Heavy, Demo, Engi and Spy show that just because you're in for the money doesn't mean you can't be proud of what you do and enjoy it. That is basically what we all look for. A job that can fund us that we also like doing.
this is a really good video definitely needs more views and you earned my sub
Great video idea and love all the comments talking about their own take on where they'd place everyone.
I feel that Heavy would be in the same boat as scout, have you seen how much fun hes having in the game?
Oh boy, this is going to go big
i have a strong feeling medic will be on the top of " here for the fun " next to pyro
Pyro is definitely in it for the killing, as his large company made his « world » bland and boring, without colors.
He believes he has fun with everyone when killing, and, as seen in the comic A Cold Day In Hell, he is *likely* capable to be aware that he kills (mainly due to how he reacts towards the bear warning him about fire).
such a fun idea i really enjoyed watching this
"He enjoys his job"
Me looking at the gaming clip: I beg to differ.
Funny, we were just debating this on a Bionicle Discord server the other day! Also I totally agree with your assessment.
"Hey. You've been getting on fine without one" "A Soul"
I'd put Engineer more on the killing-side. That psychopathic smile as he watches an enemy off-screen get blown to pieces in meet the engineer, did it for me
Engineers complete calm bloodlust makes me think that engineer is supposed to be some psychopath but great vid. Keep it up!
4:47
a explosives expert does not need to be killing all he needs to do is explode what he is told to explode
i think demo is only doing for the money, one job he explodes buildings the other he explodes people all in a days work
A lil add on near 1:10, I remember reading somewhere (Post by valve or somethin I forgot) that apart of the reason he's in it is to make money for his mom
3:25 Isn't it also possible that he's aware of what he's doing and Pyrovision is more like a means of showing what it feels like to him?
I think you might be a bit confused on the Demoman part. That article from him was about the top 10 house cleaners that won’t kill you if you drink them. And the part about Pyro could be boiled down to him only being in it for the “fun” since Pyroland makes it seem like everyone is just having fun. He probably thinks he’s getting paid to both babysit and play with children if “Meet the Pyro” is anything to go by.
There’s no amount of money anyone can pay to feel the joy Heavy does mowing down hoards of men
I think demoman actually enjoys his job
Since he looked so tired and broken down before Mrs Pauling rehires him
He shows his enthusiasm
"Im putting heavy as only in it for the money." meet the heavy says otherwise
Pyro is a complicated character because while it is true that he thinks he's making people happy with his fire, she also understands that fire is dangerous and hurts people. This is a contradiction that could, emphasis on could, be understood by saying that while Pyro knows he's hurting others it believes they are spreading its joy to others like this. Either way, Pyro probably is in partly for the money and partly to have an excuse to set everyone on fire.
He's not a mumbling idiot, if anything the comics have shown that he acts the way she does only because they can, and that's it.
kind of irrelevant but i've just come to the realization that using all pronouns for pyro is 10/10 100% my favorite way to describe them lol
After all pyro IS the one to extinguish his teammates using airblast and reflecting explosives, so they clearly have SOME idea of what they're doing.
I think Pyro's writing is kind of weird and inconsistent at times in general, but by god are they still my favorite character. The power of hyperfixations make anything possible.

tbh whether or not the list is at all accurate, this video is a great example of how many of the mercs have motives other than money or fun.

I feel like soldier gets the same pay, seeing how well of a killer he is, but he spends it all on raccoon sanctuaries and hats that were set on fire.
2:24 "solider is suffering the worst case of PTSD and schizophrenia"

I don’t think soldier can have the worst case of schizophrenia when pyro exists.
when it comes to pyro being CEO of frontier engineering, i have to assume that happened on accident
Scout get miss Pauling
Soilder we get Demo
Pyro get Engineer

It's actually a good friend dynamic for characters tho
Great video!
I remember pyro literally killing the tf2 universe’s version of smoky the bear
LMAO THATS ME IN THE KILLFEED AT 6:17 "eeby deeby!!!"
Sniper was the most obvious one, since he flat out tells his Dad it's just a job in his Meet The trailer. Even if you haven't touched the comics, you know it's just money for him.
As the joker said: if you're good at something don't do it for free
It's worth noting that Pyro abandons their enormous company without a second thought when given the chance to start working with fire again.
I would have put medic in the mostly in it for the killing tier because while yeah, the money helps him do his experiments, it is simply a means to an end for him. The money is nice, but it's simply not what he's /really/ there for
killing or money?
medic: "Both? Yes both, both is good."
Engineer is most likely the leader of the Blu team, he said it because he already has another job, which is to repair the Mann brothers' machines.
You're the only guy i've seen play that weird map with the satellite from the menu screen
Heavy is in for the money to be able to keep shooting his gun that he uses to get money to shoot the gun so he can get money...
