You are on a "Supreme" tear! Very fitting song on the day of Jimmy Carter's funeral, one of the great love stories.

I cannot express how important Motown was to music in the 60s and Diana Ross was the queen.

It's great to see the joy in your face as you hear them sing! Just like we did back in the 60s. The Ed Sullivan Show was a variety show watched by millions every Sunday night for decades. He hosted many rock bands and groups so the teenagers would tune in (usually at the end of the one hour show to keep us waiting and watching).

The Supremes were actually renamed as “Diana Ross and The Supremes” in 1967 because Berry Gordy (the founder of Motown) realized he could charge more if they performed as a double act. He did the same with Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. Diana, Mary, and Cindy reunited for Motown’s 25th anniversary celebration in 1983 but there was still resentment. Cindy and Mary were still upset over how Berry deliberately overshadowed them with Diana. They deliberately sang softly so the sound crew would raise the microphones. When it was time for the performance, Diana’s voice was overpowered 🤣🤣🤣

      @kurtsupreme 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

The name was changed to DRATS to get Diane's name out there in preparation for her solo career.............also, at the insistence of Diane. Smokey was Berry's vice president and best friend. Only The Supremes and Miracles had their names changed significantly. Martha Reeves and The Vandellas had already been Martha and The Vandellas. The story of the charging more money for two acts was made up by Berry to soften the blow of the name change of The Supremes which the public was very critical of at the time. Don't fall for the Motown propaganda that was generated about the name change. There were lots of fake stories generated to save face like the one that said that Flo left the group because she wanted to start a family. I could go on and on.

Diana Ross wrote in her biography she was alone with the session singers in the studio while recording it. No other Supreme. Apparently this song was to be her solo debut, but Berry Gordy decided it would be the perfect "goodbye" song for this line-up. And right he was.

I’ve never seen them in concert, just on tv. I did see Diana Ross in concert at Lincoln Center in the 80’s. She was great and she wore a ball gown and then it came off and she had jeans/T-shirt on. The concert was great!

The Supremes continued with four different line-ups until June 12, 1977 when they performed their final concert. The only member who had stayed from the very beginning was Mary Wilson - the one with the husky voice who died four years ago. I highly recommend their first post-Diana hit "Up The Ladder To The Roof" from spring 1970.

The absolute best girl group of the 1960's, and they were from my home state, from Detroit MI. I was just 13 then and saw this first broadcast, had a tear in my eye knowing they were breaking up. My mom asked me whay I was I was crying. I said I don't know, the Supremes are breaking up , and then the next year the Beatles officially broke up. More tears. I became a music teacher an dIK iknclude the Supremes as a major influence, they were a large part of the soundtrack of the 1960's. Kids then had a lot in common through music, no mattertheir perceives backgrond. This white kid loved Motown music, and the black kids liked the Beatles, it was all cool with us...

Diana's first solo hit was Ain't No Mountain High Enough--a remake of the Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell classic. Diana had a different spin on it and made it her own.

"Someday" charted at number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 popular singles chart for 1 week, on December 27, 1969. this song was last song for 60's and this shorter version of this song. 3:25 (album/single version) the Supremes were the most commercially successful of Motown's acts and the most successful American vocal band, with 12 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Diana ross has total 6 number one for herself. so she sings on total of 18 number-one

    " Ever / Ever / Ever ... ever since that day ... I cry "
You read into the triple context ! ( a lover / the band splitting up / someone departed )
First time I heard this song was on a television show where the Supremes united for a tribute to Marvin Gaye .
That performance changed the context of the song from a lover that isn't around to a loved one that's departed .
    ~ A profound melancholy / longing .

They did re-unite and sing this song 14 years later on Motown 25. Unfortunately, it was heavily edited to remove some sort of on-stage conflict between Ross and Wilson. The Supremes continued to have top-20 hits for the next few years, including their biggest, "Stoned Love."

The Supremes didn't break up. In 1970 the group reverted to "The Supremes" and continued recording for Motown through 1976. The group was retired by Motown when the last founding member Mary Wilson decided to go solo. Diana and Mary and Cindy got on stage one last time for the1983 'Motown 25' television special.

As you heard Diana was about to go solo. With that in mind fun fact. Diana is the only supreme singing on this song. It was originally supposed to be her first solo single but Berry Gordy wanted the last Supremes single to go out with a hit so he gave it to the group. The backing vocals are done by backing studio singers signed to Motown at the time. You can also hear Johnny bristol doing some backing vocals as well. The male voice you hear. He wrote the song and sung it in studio with Diana to give her a little motivation as she was feeling a little down and couldn't connect with the song.

Love her songs, with and without the Supremes, but she was known as a terror of a diva. One account I heard is that she threatened to pull out of a show and just leave, while waiting in her dressing room, if in that exact moment, the producer did not interrupt the current performer in the middle of a song to announce to the audience that there would be no picture-taking allowed of Diana when she was to come out and perform later. So that puts her sudden solo career and the earlier Supremes fallout in a bit of context, I think.

The Supremes did reunite on the Motown 25th Anniversary special, but it was a disaster. Mary tried to get to close to Diana, and Diana pushed her away. The Supremes continued on without Diana, and initially, they had greater success than Diana. In January 1970, their first single "Up The Ladder To The Roof" got to #10, they did a duet with the Four Tops "River Deep, 6:48 Mountain High", which got to #10. Their biggest hit was "Stoned Love", which got to #6 in October 1970. In 1971, they hsd a hit wiith "Nathan Jones". In 1972, they had a hit with "Floy Joy". They didn't have another real hit until 1976 with "I'm Gonna Let My Heart Do The Walkin". That was their last. Diana's career didn't really take off until she did "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". I'm going to have "Someday We'll Be Together" and "Stoned Love" played at my Celebration of Life ceremony.

The Supremes became "Diana Ross and the Supremes" in 1967 and around time of the name change Flo was fired from the group due to temperment and drinking issues and not getting along with Ross (they would occsionally have fistfights backstage before shows). Cindy Birdsong from Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles replaced Flo. In late 69 Diana was announced she was going solo. Their last performance as Diana Ross and the Supremes was in Vegas in January 1970. Diana was replaced in the Supremes by Jean Terrell and she, Wilson, and Birdsong had several hits together. You should check out their Ed Sullivan performance of Up the Ladder to the Roof. The Supremes finally ended in 1977. In 1983, Ross, Wilson and Birdsong reunited for Motown 25 TV show performance (Flo Ballard had died in poverty in 1976--Diana showed up at the funeral and was booed by the fans and then she tried to steal the spotlight by coming up to the altar uninvited to speak). AT Motown 25, Ross was rude to Wilson and Birdsong at rehearsal which was done at last minute. Then Ross got drunk before the show and when it came time for Supremes reunion Diana forgot the words to Someday We'll Be Together. Mary took over the lead and Diana became violent and shoved her and then try to take Mary's mic away. The producers had to get rest of the cast on the stage to close out show before things got worse.

Their name was changed when Florence left the group. Berry Gordy stated he did this with many Motown groups to demand more money for the acts. The Supremes were very successful for Motown and Berry was very much invested in them.
