Something about the twins man, they were so majestic and massive in size, there might have been buildings taller, but very few had that awe about them, when you looked straight up from the ground, takes your breath away and i can only imagine what it was like, up on top of the observation deck, in the open air, amazing!

I couldn’t help but stare at the original WTC at the end of the video. Despite its simplicity in design, there is something about them that forces one’s attention. Maybe because there were two of them, and they went straight up with no tapering, so their sheer size was more pronounced. I was 7 when they fell, and I remember staring at them as a little kid when I was driven across the BQE. They glistened in the sun as well, depending on the time of day. Early mornings, they’d have this beautiful golden glow to them, midday a solid gray, and the evenings a golden glow again. I miss them, and the NYC skyline will never be whole without them. RIP to all those lost on that horrible day, and to those that died years later from 9/11 related health issues.

I agree. It's incomparable for many reasons, from the innovative construction techniques (for its time) that allowed it to be completed in 13 months (which is still remarkable today), to the daring attempt to become a port for airships. But especially because it remains the living memory of a time when betting on everything wasn't crazy.

I GO BY THE PARAPET , OR ROOF HEIGHT ,AND THAT WOULD MAKE THE TALLEST BUILDING IN NEW YORK, AND THE COUNTRY, THE CENTRAL PARK TOWER (AKA), THE NORDSTRUM BUILDING 1,550 FEET AND SECOND WOULD BE, THE STIENWAY, TOWER, ALSO THE SLIMMEST 1,428 FEET, THIRD IS 432 PARK AVENUE, 1,396 FEET, AND FOURTH IS THE BANDERBILT BUILDING, 1,401 FEET. I WAS DISAPPOINTED WITH THE FREEDOM TOWER. I WANTED IT TO BE 1776 FEET AT THE ROOF, BUT TO ME ,THEY PULLED A FAST ONE. IT'S REALLY NOT TALLER THAN THE TWIN TOWERS, 1,368 FEET, IT JUST HAS A 408 FOOT ANTENNA ON TOP. THE NEXT SKYSCRAPER BEING BUILT IN NEW YORK IS, THE AFFIRMATION TOWER, ON 11TH AVENUE. IT WILL BE 1,663 FEET TALL, THATS IF THEY DON'T CHANGE IT, LIKE THEY DID WITH THE FREEDOM TOWER.

The Empire State Building, historic and iconic. One World Trade Center, a symbol of resilience and hope. The Twin Towers, ill-fated, yet majestic in their grandeur. But I can't stop thinking about the Sears Tower. One of my favorites. A beautiful, imposing building. Broad shouldered, like it's city's citizens. Unique in it's structural design and color scheme compared to most skyscrapers. And when complimented with the Hancock building, they seem to (almost) bookend the Chicago skyline, especially given their similar design and colors. Each of these buildings is awesome in their own right, but the Sears holds a special place for me. Love it so much.

Even though the twin towers seem simple at first in terms of design they are my absolute favourite and i really miss looking at them. They were by far the most imposing buildings. Don't be bewitched, those new "super" skyscrapers are not as tall as they say they are..
It's funny how we have a city with hundreds of 50+ skyscrapers in it, and then Dubai desperately builds a random 163 floor spire in the middle of a desert, and China makes sure they have 3 landmark towers in the heart of poverty Shanghai. The impressive and awe inspiring thing about the Twin Towers was not only their height, but their width. Other buildings like the Sears (Willis) Tower were slightly taller, but did not look nearly as imposing. The Twins were MASSIVE! Standing at the bottom of them and looking up was a sight to behold, especially as a child. It was actually the first time I got scared looking UP at something! The NYC skyline (and NYC itself) has never been the same since they've been gone. It was stupid not to rebuild them.

    • @bretton_woods

They'd never be able to rebuild them exactly, for a start they would have to install more than 3 emergency stairwells, and make them wider so that emergency workers could pass on the way up. The stairwells alone contributed to a lot of the deaths on 9/11.

While the twin towers were rather simplistic in shape, it was elegant and proof you don't need smaller top floors to hold a structure that size.
Uncompromising functional floor space bottom to top.
Would have preferred if the new tower had floors up to 1776 feet. The antenna itself can only be climbed by certified technicians, nobody is going to fully appreciate the height from an observation deck or something.

  • @SlammedZero
    @SlammedZero 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +27

The Twin Towers may have been a bit bland in design, but there was just something majestic about them, like they were a pair of guardians standing over the city. Even though they had a terrible demise, maybe in a way, they still were the guardians of the city by taking the brunt of the terrorist attacks. They could have possibly saved different parts of the city from something more sinister that could have been planned by the terrorists.

One of the things that made the Twin Towers so beautiful and fitting in the New York skyline was they were the centerpiece. There was no other competing skyscraper near it that came close to its height and all the other buildings in lower Manhatten made up the rest of the skyline and complimented the Twins.

You're very welcome. I'm particularly proud that you say it's the best you've seen, because the truth is that there are some quite good ones, and one is never the most objective in these matters. In any case, I am going to continue making videos of this type because I enjoy it, but I'm going to have to struggle with Kronos to see if it lets me play tricks on reality. Well, and with my wife too, and that's going to be more difficult.

When I saw that image of the Freedom Tower and the Twin Towers together at the end, it actually seriously spooked me out because of what happened. That image looked so wrong. I was 30 back then and I remember the horror of what happened very clearly. I’m in Australia and we will be visiting NYC next year. I remember those two buildings being superimposed onto the Perth, Western Australia skyline back in the news in 2001, and they were truly immense, especially when placed into that setting…but in the NYC skyline, they looked totally natural and to scale there. The Freedom Tower lacks their presence. Can’t say I’m a big fan of a certain Donald J Trump but I did agree with him when he stated build them as they were, but even better to serve a massive snub to those who sought to bring the United States to its knees. Those two towers are definitely missed I reckon along with the many innocents that paid the price because of a perverse and twisted ideology. I’ll never forget.

    • @bretton_woods
      @bretton_woods 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

They could never be rebuilt exactly, simply because the original design of the twins had several flaws - like only having 3 emergency stairwells, instead of the 6 they were supposed to have for buildings of that height. The same stairwells also being far too narrow, meaning it was hard for emergency workers to pass evacuees on the way up. They'd also need to have changed the structure to have steel supports running throughout the floor layout instead of having all the structural steel on the outside.
I do agree that the new tower does not look great...it looks like it could be in *any* city. Totally generic.

I always go by roof height (where one can stand & walk around w/o safety equipment) ! With that in mind, if you stand on the roof of Central Park Tower, you’re looking down upon the Sears Tower’s roof. If you stand on the Sears Tower’s roof, you’re looking down upon the roof of 1 WTC, all by roughly a 100ft or so !

For me, it's also the height of the rooftop (generally accessible) that determines the real height of a building, but CTBUH considers that criterion secondary, and personally, I find that it distorts the worldwide rankings of skyscrapers. New York City is not the same without the original World Trade Center Twin Towers. I used to occasionally visit the city in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Unfortunately, I was just a young, naive little boy back then and was not impressed by the Twins at the time. To my young mind, they were just two tall buildings in a very crowded city. I had *NO* idea of what would happen to them about a decade or so later. How could I know? I'm not a fortune teller, and nobody ever warned me about the destruction of the Twin Towers back then.
Why didn't somebody tell me, "Hey, kid...you'd better enjoy the Twin Towers now while they're still around. One day in the early 21st Century, they will be gone forever." Being so naive back then, would I have believed the person who told me that? I don't know. Maybe, maybe not. I'll never know since nobody ever told me.

For fun and helpful information (since it came up in a reply to a comment): The Central Park Tower in New York City has a roof height of 1,550 feet. It is taller than the Willis Tower (roof height 1,451) by a significant margin, and is the tallest residential building in the world. The Willis (Sears) Tower is 1,354 feet at its highest floor, where The Central Park Tower is 1,417 feet at its highest floor. Additionally, The New One World Trade Center Tower is, architecturally, also significantly taller than The Willis Tower, (as the creator of the video mentioned) due to its permanent spire according to The Council On Tall Buildings (the organization based in Chicago and the world authority on skyscraper official measurements). The spire on the New One WTC (as mentioned) is officially part of the permanent architectural design of the building and not an antenna. By no measure is The Willis Tower architecturally the tallest in America. Even if you did count the removable antennas on The Willis Tower (which doesn't count but reaches 1,729 feet), it would still not reach the 1,776 foot official (and symbolic) height of the New World Trade Center Tower, and certainly not reach The New World Trade Center's actual pinnacle height of 1,792 feet. Said with great respect and appreciation on your work and great video. 👍

ALL THE ONES OF THIS VIDEO HAVE NO RESIDENTIAL COMPONENT EITHER.
      - The Empire State building was tallest in the world for decades.
      - The original Twin Towers World Trade Center then held the title for 2-yrs .
      - Till Sears (Willis) Tower took the title for 24-yrs of tallest in the world.
The decision to count the spire on the new One World Trade.... came in 2013 when the 30 members of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat's "height committee" decreed a spire counted and antenna did not.
The debate was particularly charged because of the symbolic nature of the metal structure on One World Trade Center. With the structure the building reaches 1,776ft - a reference to the year of the US Declaration of Independence. The committee claimed that that or 9 11 significance played no role in the decision.
“Spires, the committee decided, are part of the architecture of the building and not if a roof addition is a antenna, flag pole or sign. Saying a Spire will not only be there permanently but have a significant effect on what the building is perceived to be. ANTENNA that Sears (Willis) Tower had did not and were replaced and made taller over time.
Still we cannot imagine Sear Tower Chicago or formally named John Hancock Center Tower Chicago NOT having their distinctive very high Twin Antenna topping them. BUT RULES ARE RULES.
      - The Burj Khalifa tallest in the World in Dubai has a unoccupied space and spire of 801ft.
      - The One World Trade Center has a spire that is 441 ft.
      - The Sears (Willis) Tower twin antenna are 294 ft and the other at 290 ft.
In the original design for One World Trade Center, the spire was to have been covered in decorative cladding. (making it look sleek). That cladding was ditched during construction due to issues over its upkeep, however, which had lead, in part, to the contention (as it currently does look like a sort of antenna).... I BELIEVE THE SLEEK DESIGN SHOULD HAVE BEEN KEPT.
Without its spire, One World Trade Center measures a mere 1,368ft, shorter than the 1,451ft Willis Tower - formerly the Sears Tower. The top floor of the Sears (Willis) Tower, at 1,354 ft and is higher than the One World Trade Center’s top floor at 1,268 ft.

That's correct, in fact, architecturally it's the tallest in America.

This is incorrect. The Central Park Tower in New York City has a roof Height of 1,550 feet. It is taller than the 1,451 foot roof height of The Willis Tower by a significant margin, and is the tallest residential building in the world. The Willis (Sears) Tower is 1,354 at its highest floor, where The Central Park Tower is 1,417 at its highest floor.
