A long time ago, early 90's I bought a Spanish FR-8 Mauser.I also bought 100 rounds of Winchester 308 110 grain Spire point that the gun shop was basically giving away, $2 a box. I've always been kicking myself in the ass ever since for not buying EVERYTHING. There were 1,000 rounds of it and I bought 100. A few weeks later I went to the range and tested the rifle. It was LAZER accurate even with the battle sights on the rifle. Sub 1 minute groups. This rifle LOVES light bullets. Today I still have that rifle and Jealously guard the 40 remaining rounds I have of this ammo. Unfortunately, my eyes are almost 28 years older.
The powder my father and his generation used in their 30-06’s for 110’s was H380. I use it as well and it performs very well. If you are not going to put that bullet in the groves, seat it completely in the neck of the case. A longer jump will not always diminish the accuracy. IMR might work a little better but I don’t know. Just a suggestion from an old hand loader.
I use 43-45 grains H4895 with the 110 VMAX and get sub MOA, quite often depending on my shooting bullets holes touching each other. I use RCBS dies, COL 2.655in and CCI Large rifle primers, velocity is around 3000 FPS. It's an excellent round that I really enjoy shooting. Back when I only had my 308 I would use 110 VMAX for predator hunting and 150 SST's for deer, 180 Barnes TSX for moose. It is a pretty versatile caliber and I found easy to reload for but I stick with H4895 as my main powder and Reloader 15 as a very good second choice.
Northern. A rifle that will acridly shoot that wide of bullet weights , what is the twist rate of the barrel and how long of a barrel ? I find 1/10 seems limited to heavier (168) bullets and slow 1550 FPS, 16 inch barrel to get tighter groups 1 inch / 100 yards . Using Accurate 2460. Comments appreciate.
Great video JRB, I'm a big fan of the Forster ultra micrometer seating dies also. I use them in all my calibers. I had to do some polishing to the inside of the .223 die and seating stem as it was scuffing the bullet and also leaving a ring on the bullet a little more than I'm comfortable with on my SMK's, but it polished out nice. Would love to see the 175 grain SMK bullet with 41.8-42.0 grains of IMR 4064. Or the same 175 SMK bullet with a ladder of Varget. COAL 2.800 Or the 168 grain SMK bullet with either 42 grains of RE-15, or the same 168 grain SMK with 43-43.5 grains of Varget. Or 42.8 grains of IMR 4064. COAL 2.800 All should be good shooters. Keep up the great work and thanks for the info.
I had poor results in a 30-06 with these 110 grain bullets too. My best groups were with IMR 3031 and reduced loads! Can't generalize though every barrel has its own individuality even with the same twist rate and in the same caliber! Thanks for another interesting video.
with the light bullets I've had good luck with and recommend 47g imr4895 win. primers , max case capacity with zqi brass imr3031@46.5g win. primers that high from all the data i have, but I have lots of case and pressures are good. it bangs 600 yd steel real quick and tight head size groups on good days that my favorite w/ hornady 110sp shooting out of an ar10 18" 1in10 twist barrel. oal 2.625-2.630". the fist time I shot that bullet out of that rifle I couldn't believe it shot that short Lil thing so well because it usually favors heavy slugs .Just proves you can't predicted how a rifles gonna shoot any bullet even when you have all the data points to the opposite outcome
I use 125g Sierra soft point for hunting with my 300blk and 308. Powder for 300blk is lillgun at 19g and 308 is ir2206h at 40g. Use both projectiles over both guns for budget. Want to find a common powder that gives same results as above. Please make a video series of short, medium and distance hunting gun calls that use common projectiles, powder and if possible primers. Reason, guns are hunting tool and we use right gun for job so need short, medium and long distance tools for medium game aka goats, pigs, deer ranges... cheers and happy to discuss, gav
I used 43.2 grs 3031 200 cci OAL 1.40" full length sized with factory crimp ( used in DPMS 308 and Savage Model 10, same) Group was shooting threw the same hole at 100 yds.. I was impressed .
The 308 combination I'd suggest you test is the Nosler 125gr Ballistic Tip over Varget. In my Savage Precision Carbine 20" barrel it produces slightly over 3000 fps and will plunk 5-shot groups into 5/8" groups all day. The really interesting part is that bullet is good out to 700 yds, which is not something most people would think such a light "varmint" bullet would do well. Low recoil, high velocity and good accuracy.
@@charlesmullins3238 The 110gr are so short it is difficult to load them anywhere near the lands, so you end up with a big jump, which I not conducive to accuracy. The 110 are absolute destruction on coyotes but the 125 Nosler is a better choice.
I love both of your channels, you share so much information on powders and bullets which makes it easier for me to work off your success. When are you going to start doing ballistic gel testing?
Johnny what if we could keep that bullet weight very similar use a solid copper projectile given a nice boat would happen that bullet was a quarter of an inch longer with a boat tail
Any thoughts on a softer primer ? loaded some 110's for my BLR 308 wit 45.2gr of 4064 and CCi 200 primers. none would go off. light primer strikes. loaded some empty casings wit WLR primers 3 out of 5 went off and 4 out of 5 went off wit Fed 210's. put all the ones that didn't go off in my bolt guns and they went off just fine.. I thing the 2 piece floating firing pin in the BLR is the problem.. I see a lot of videos of factory ammo in the BLR not going off too.. Iv been load n for over 45yrs and never had to use a specific brand primer for a specific gun...
Hey Johnny, have you done any gel testing with this or other similar jacketed varmint bullets in 308 by chance? Midway had sierra 110 grain hp blems on sale for $.12/round and then dropped them down to $.08/round right after I ordered some @ $.12. I figured they would be okay for the blackout if I can get them to shoot well, but was wondering how they would do for head / neck shots on deer this fall from a 20" 308. Considering testing them all the way down to 2,600-2,700 fps at the muzzle (gun is super over gassed) if they are too explosive with inadequate penetration. Never shot anything below 150 grains in 308 and I usually run 175-200 grains, so this is all new territory to me. Oh and shots here in western tn will likely be under 100 yards with

Hi, just came along your video, I enjoyed it. Easy to watch, easy to stay interested. Good job. I have use 3031 with this bullet and have found it to good enough for me to stop testing. At the end you mentioned you were going to do some more testing with maybe 4895. Have you done that? or if your still evaluating powders, I'd like to know if you have any luck with 3031. I've use 46gr with COL 2.74, / .05" over, and a slight squeeze on the neck with a LEE. Hi! Can you tell the story of your savage 99? My grand father passed on to my father and then tome a model 99. Years ago a gunsmith re fitted the chamber from 300sav to 308win. I’ve been afraid to shoot it, but your video gave me hope!!
I use 47.5g of varget (its a compressed load) and get cloveleaves all day. I lightly crimp it because it's not seated very far in the neck. Don't remember how far off the lands from memory
If I locate it will post my 110grain round nose loads. Here is one Reloader 7 35.3 Grains with a 150gr Sierra Boat tail hollow point match seat at 2.80" OAL use the cci 200 primers and Winchester or Federal Gold Medal Match brass recoil like 300 Savage but full 308 velocity 2600-2650fps and asprin shoot accuracy. One more substitute 36 grain of Hodgdon Benchmark in above recipe. Slower velocity but youll like the results.
I was wondering if you have tried nosler 125gr ballistic tip bullets sitting on 51.5 gr. of win 748? They shoot a 1ragged hole out of my 308 at 3230 FPS. Lite recoil and excellent deer load for my grandkids..
The 125gr Ballistic Tip is a way better bullet than the 110 VMAX. I've used both and the 110 is really hard to seat because it is so short. End up with huge jump to the lands. Not great for accuracy.
@@billymaze4733 For decades people used 7.62X51/308s on big game animals in Africa and the USA. When did America's animals become too big and tough for the right 308 loads? I guess about the same time 5.56/223 became too small for deer, hogs, and other domestic pests.

i need to buy high quality 308 bolt action rifle. what do you recommend for very good 308. i am not on budget. could you please help? i have tikka t3 stainless steel barrel in 30-06 and i love it, but don't want to own two similar rifles.
My first rifle was a tikka t3 lite s/s bbl,syn stock with 4x12x40 vx1.in 223. Not bad rifle. Everything I bought after this was not to this standard. Even the browning x bolt, stainless stalker in 308. My last rifle is a sako a7 . Budget sako line with a vx 3 . In 22_250. Looks cheap but feels right in the hand and shoots well. If I had my time again all my rifles would be tikka or sako with Leopold scopes . Just fine for hunting purposes. I'm relatively new to hunting and old and grey. 300mtrs is my limit. Never had any issues with the t3 or a7.
Im interested in loading this bullet for my 30-30 Marlin 336 Carbine. Its currently set up as a home defense/patrol carbine.. Im running the Primary Arms 1-6 ACSS Variable with 7.62x39 BDC reticle.. Full case capacity equals accuracy and encourages powder choice to the best fill the case without +P or ++P..... ? If you were using a 30-30 you would see the comparative difference in its case capacity and the 308 Tika or Savage and why case fill capacity encourages powder choice and accuracy....?
If you circle back to update this video, please use the same bullets with a case filing slower powder and compare with heavier bullets. Just go buck wild as curious Johnny Reloader ballistic curious adventures .....

I used TAC powder in my 110 308 Vmax load in a DPMS AR10. I got 3259 fps from a 24 inch barrel and if I remember about 1 to 1.5 inch groups.
Reloader 7 is A DIRTY GIRL.
i need to buy high quality 308 bolt action rifle. what do you recommend for very good 308. i am not on budget. could you please help? i have tikka t3 stainless steel barrel in 30-06 and i love it, but don't want to own two similar rifles.
thank you
thank you
I usually use h414 and 4350 powders for my 30-06 and I love 160gr bullets or 180gr. I also have 230gr bullets but they tumble when I shoot them?
thats the problem my rifle has 2-11 in 22"
tikka t3
My first rifle was a tikka t3 lite s/s bbl,syn stock with 4x12x40 vx1.in 223. Not bad rifle. Everything I bought after this was not to this standard. Even the browning x bolt, stainless stalker in 308. My last rifle is a sako a7 . Budget sako line with a vx 3 . In 22_250. Looks cheap but feels right in the hand and shoots well. If I had my time again all my rifles would be tikka or sako with Leopold scopes . Just fine for hunting purposes. I'm relatively new to hunting and old and grey. 300mtrs
is my limit. Never had any issues with the t3 or a7.
Is your scopes bell touching the barrel?...looks awful close.
H335 is my 308 powder ............... Please try it next ....Also drill out the primer pocket to remove the bullet .......... enjoy
Try the Speer 125 gr tnt bullets with H380 powder
Im interested in loading this bullet for my 30-30 Marlin 336 Carbine. Its currently set up as a home defense/patrol carbine.. Im running the Primary Arms 1-6 ACSS Variable with 7.62x39 BDC reticle.. Im currently loading the old Sierra 125gr hollow point but im interested in moving to one of these polymer tipped spitzers in the ol' tube mag levergun with hopes of finding a load that will match the trajectory of 7.62x39.. Also looking at the 125gr Hornady SST.
Don't blow yourself up. Single-load only, or get detonation in the tubular magazines due to the pointy bullets hitting the primers in the tube.
check out the reloader dudes last cpl of videos he had two Redding's reloading dies one for bolt action and one for semi autos for 308
Put a cloth down to keep the dust from kicking up
The 125-130 gr. behind some Win. 748 will max out @ about 3200 fps and can be devestating.
LFC brought my SD down a lot.
Underwood 76 grain 🌾
Aluminum tipped QRF
or Underwood 144 grain 🌾 titanium tipped. Nasty little buggers IMR 4895
My RCBS seating die consistently seats the Vmax 110 at 2.740
I have a load for this you may want try? Im getting sub half moa groups at 100yds cant tell you the velocity of it as my crono broke an haven't bought another yet🤦♂️im using accurate 2495 powder 42.5gr with hornady 110vmax cci br-2 primers seating at 2.74 COL group was one tattered hole out side edges measured measured at 3/8" would like to see you try it an if it works as well for you 🤷♂️
Full case capacity equals accuracy and encourages powder choice to the best fill the case without +P or ++P..... ? If you were using a 30-30 you would see the comparative difference in its case capacity and the 308 Tika or Savage and why case fill capacity encourages powder choice and accuracy....?
rcbs works fine
Try 29 grains of RE. 7 THEN 25 & see how it prints 😮
Sweet Treat 🔥🇺🇸
Around 50-51 grains of Winchester 748 should work great with that bullet.
try Varget for accurate .308 Loads
burning the 308 barrel?
try 42.5 grains of Reloader 15 and 168 gr. Hornady match bullet and with 10 inch twist.
Win 760 good choice
What are the twist rates on your guns?
7.5x55 has also been neglected far too long ;)
No doubt! I am going to be doing some work on my front sight posts on the Swiss guns within a couple weeks. Videos should show up soon!
minutemanqvs Yes! Love that round!
H335 is also a good choice.
My savage 99 prefer the heavy bullets. Especially 180s
caliber refers to the bore diameter. Cartridge refers to the case. Caliber and cartridge do NOT mean the same thing. just sayin
My dad has the same lever action rifle as that it was his grandfathers
Try this test again with H-4895
110gr 308 must be fast. Lets see some 3200+ velocity. Whatever it hits probably explodes.
That's 2 videos that I've seen using that brass. Not working for ya as evident by the SDs I think.
I had exceptional results with 46.0 grains of Benchmark powder and CCI 250 primers. I was unable to seat my bullets under 2.74 COL.
Load a compressed charge of W-748 , and seat the bullets at 2775 , and thank me in the morning
46.0 gr H322, 2.800"
The 110 vmax is jumping a looong way. The LFC die will bring the sd down a bit. At least it did for my 700VS.
👍👍👍
If you circle back to update this video, please use the same bullets with a case filing slower powder and compare with heavier bullets. Just go buck wild as curious Johnny Reloader ballistic curious adventures .....
