I did some testing with AR Comp, 165 gr GMX and 165gr TTSX bullets in my 308 Sig Cross. The rifle did not like the AR Comp so I tried the same in my POF Revolution and still no joy. I then tried 44grs of Varget with both those monolithic bullets with some great results and was under 1/2" in the Sig. I took a nice 200lb buck with the TTSX and had a nice pass through. Keep up the awesome work!

The 100gr TTSX in 6.5 Grendel, the 120gr TTSX in 6.5 Creedmoor with shorter barrels and the 127gr LRX in Creedmoors with more traditional barrel lengths. I've never got the Hornady GMX bullets to shoot good and I've tried several time in multiple calibers... Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!

  • @mike-rq4ye
    @mike-rq4ye 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thanks Johnny. I have heard that those monolithic bullets hate a copper fouled barrel. The GMX are apparently the most tolerant out of all of them but if you feel like there is unfinished business with this load, that would be a good theory to examine.
Thanks again, love your work 👍👍

ive got a theory on why those gmx dont shoot well from your gun. You stated the barrel is 1:11 twist, perhaps being those bullets are extremely long for their weight, a 1:10 twist would shoot them better: Length of bullet/bearing surface is one of the huge main factors that faster twists are used for heavier (longer) bullets.

Totally agree with the 3rd group. I tried my .308 168 Barnes in a few different powders, and am sub moa to 200 with it. The factory Barnes often ran just over .5” for me, I didn’t play with overall length and used their ogive. Just hard times to play around copper as it’s hard to find and not cheap.

I do like your videos. I myself live in Kentucky as well. My shots get to about 155 yards out of the primary blind I shoot from. And as you say you really don't need to group that well on those shorter ranges. ARs are fun to shoot but honestly the bolt guns are better for hunting. One thing I thought I would mention is a 1-11 twist for a 308 isn't all that good. Most of them are a 1-10. The copper bullet is much longer, and you really need a higher twist barrel for it to shoot tighter. I would be shooting 150 grain flat based bullets out of that AR. Just saying the twist rate on those longer bullets isn't good.

With the all copper bullets, I like to go lighter to get a bit more velocity to insure expansion. Personally, I would use the 150 GMX in the 308. The 168 will do well for your hunting. As you found, the all copper bullets are much longer than their lead core counterparts and take up more case space. I use a 168 Barnes TTSX in the 300 Win. Mag. In the 30/06 the 150's and in my 270, a 110 @3250 FPS. Buddy took a nice Elk with the 168 300 W.M. and a Pronghorn @ 300 yards with the 110 270 load. The all copper bullets are a bit of a different animal.

I had the same experience with the GMX I was using the 125grain 30cal in my Ar-10 in 308. I was using N-140 powder and I was pushing them close to 960m/s with maximum loads but accuracy was terrible about the size of a plate and bigger, as the velocity dropped down to 850m/s I got quite good accuracy about 1moa or something, I wasnt changing the seating depth a whole lot, i was just using the CIP overalllength. The GMX is wird somehow I thought it might be a flatshooting and deeppenetrating load but with these accuracy problems, I will try the ttsx next.

Both of the tests together are great, though. I like that you can see how the POI has a general trend downward, between the two videos, up until the final string where it goes back up and then to the left a bit.
I trust that it is the load that throws consistent fliers. It almost looks like it wants to start to make a group, but then it has one or two outliers that are just fuck-all. If you were to continue testing - some time down the road - to see what the best group you could get with this bullet could be, it would probably only be worth it to do a slight increase or decrease in powder?
But for hunting, any of these groups are going to get the job done, though, and be great.

And I'm still trying to figure out how to get the brass sized so it won't get stuck in the chamber. Perhaps when seating the bullet you are expanding the case...due to elasticity when the case mouth hits the groove it is snapping back a little then expands at the next band without that elasticity you have no neck tension.

The bearing surface grooves are different than the GMX and they have a slightly better B.C. I absolutely loathed the GMX bullets because I could not get them to shoot well no matter what I tried. Maybe the CX will do better. Hey, it's Hornady, it's gotta be worth a try.

I shot a buck at 86m last year with a 185gr GMX out of a 338 WM (excessive I know). Bullet should have hit going >2850fps and yet I saw no evidence of expansion. It was a broadside shot and dropped him where he stood, but the exit and entrance holes were basically identical. Lots of hydrostatic damage and fragmentation of bone, but the bullet didn't appear to expand. I would have liked to recover the bullet, but it was somewhere under 2ft of snow.

I'm new to the AR-10 game, I have a Stag Marksman 18" in 308 win. I'm having a hard time getting 1 MOA out of it. I whole heartedly believe that I am the issue. I've gotten to 1.25 in but it is NOT consistent. I have allot of experience with precision bolt gun shooting. Can anyone point me to any information that can help me be a more precise shooter with the gas system rifle. I can't seem to find what will help.
Also thank you for all the work you do Johnny, this is priceless information.

Got some of the165gr Hornady GMX on clearance a couple of years back. Really like them for the 308. Have had thoughts of trying them for the 300 Win Mag.

I wonder if the GMX is a bit long for your twist rate? According to strelok your gyroscopic stability factor is only 1.3 with the GMX at 1:11. The SST is up around 1.9. Might be that the bullets are wandering a bit due to yaw? The 150 GMX might stabilise a bit better?

    Hi Jonney
I have the same problem with the lead free projectiles. The Tikka T3 11 twist 24inch shoots under half an inch groups all day 165~180 gr range lead core projectiles.
But same weight hunting copper projectiles groups are garbage. I think that even though they are the same weight the density is different, because of that the projectile shape which is normaly longer and bigger than the lead core might be effecting the barrel friction and spin ect.
It might be worth trying a longer slow barrel like a Palma Match guns or super fast twist barrel 8 or 9.
It willl be interesting to see the results.

I still think you're in that no go velocity range for .308 win. 2650 or 2750 is magic. You may sometimes find something in between, but rarely.

I’m looking forward to your results on game. I head shot a 372lb Maine black bear in September with this bullet in 30-06 with no expansion.

Yeah the GMX and TTSX are garbage unless you want to shoot through elephant shoulders. Have tried the ttsx in two different calibers and lot numbers on game and had no expansion. Shot a black bear with a 340 wby mag loaded with the 160 gr and tracked it for 300+ yards until it crossed a river and never found it. Shot a Wisconsin buck at 350 yards with a 257 wby loaded with an 80 gr and there was no blood at all. After looking for over 3 hours I found it about 150 yards away and the exit was .257 diameter.

Have you had any problems with full length resized 308 brass trimmed to 2.005 not allowing your bolt to close? I have had this happen with a set lee and rcbs dies and don’t know why.

Good stuff! Hey, were you ever able to bag anything with 6mm ARC? If I remember correctly last deer season was a bust for the ARC.

Great info as always - just 1 Q - when seating bullets do you lube the "freedom seeds" before ?

Do you think it would help your viewing audience to explain why the grooves are in the body of the bullet, and why most on-line and catalog published loads differ between lead filled and solid GMX-like bullets for the same bullet weight?
