This is also my question. Since attenuation only affects the amplitude of the signal, will it not have effect in the data of a modulation scheme that uses AM or ASK? Thank you.
Nope, attenuation is just changing scale of amplitude, it doesn't change information, by attenuation shape/information of signal will not change. Information of signal is there in shape of signal, so attenuation will create problem in detection of signal but after amplifier we can easily extract information.

Attenuation for 20dB will 100 times means 900/100 = 9 V/m.
