What's the tell-tale sign of the Ultimate Driver? And an international spy? According to Matt Mullins, our Chief Driving Instructor, it's the mastery of advanced, on-road maneuvers such as the J-Turn. Also commonly known as a "Rockford" or a "reverse turn," it should not be attempted at home.
i am so gonna try this at home
Same here
Me too, right in my living room.
Lol! @@ambiv5995
How'd it go?!
How'd it go?! @@ambiv5995
"Don't try it at home".......immediately does it in my Jetta 🤣🤣🤣
Put gear to reverse. Go full throttle, and quick counter steering wheel to opposite direction and now we can go to your nearest dealer to fix your broken gearbox :D
No because your front wheels and back wheels are stopped when you hit the spin. This doesn't hurt your gear box at all if done properly. Also you aren't shifting from Reverse into Drive right away. You're switching from Reverse, into Neutral, then into Drive all in one split second movement. It's actually one of the safest stunts to do in a car hence why so many movies do it. Plus it looks hella cool.
@@mulder19x95 It doesnt look good for front axle...
I love Matt's videos....I'm totally gonna try this turn when I get to a track!
But what if I wanna try this in case some criminals set a trap on the road and I have to back out ASAP?
"dont try this at home"
"Puts my BMW back in my closet"
I can execute this smoothly in a manual .....when switching to the BMW 420d automatic .... I had to stop before the gearbox allowed me to switch from R in to D/ S1 or M1

many of you should know what this means.
Pretty sure a J-turn is relevant in this situation.
woah i just came from that ahahhaah small world
Me too! this is amazing
That's exactly why I'm watching this TH-cam video on my phone so I can try it from home
Find an empty parking lot... do this with your friends. Trust me
It would be very difficult to try this at home.
try it outside the road not inside the house...it will be easier
There is a lot more involved than that. If you just do those steps you will just turn into a wall. When doing a J-turn its best to lift off the throttle as soon as the front starts to rotate. This is a good driver though but if you try it, make sure you know all the steps and reasons for each step
It's an auto...
This is such a BMW driver thing to do
Just blew the engine in my 08 ranger😭
Meanwhile Mercedes TH-cam account is teaching you how to use Apple carplay
This was a very poor example of a J turn. The object of which is to complete a turn of 180° without losing much, if any momentum. This car ended up almost stationary before accelerating away. A well executed turn would have the car’s front wheels already pointed at the straight ahead position mid throw as the car sweeps through the 90° position, at this same point the forward gear should be engaged and the throttle applied as soon at it is pointing in the new 180° direction. More practice needed to make it a viable escape option.
There's large parking lots for a reason lol
The editing is terrible. We don't even get to see the turn...
Bro I’m Watching this so I can execute it perfectly at home wym don’t try it at home😭
Do you know what happens if you are IN REVERSE GEAR but your vehicle is moving forward?makes j turn especially difficult in cars with automatic transmission
Poorly executed you did a j turn and stopped , next time dump the clutch in first and peel
This guy got paid to do this? That was horrible...
I’m trying this in my f150 in my subdivision
Back when BMW’s looked good.
Welp. I don't live at the mall parking lot.
ultimate driver?????? who told you that, you did half a j turn stopped then finished the manoeuvre, ive done this in an auto.... when i was 17, and it was a lot more badass than that.... i also did it in my ford laser rather smoothly.... if you guys want i can come and show you a few things
Yes sir. I've done it in SUVs, station wagons.... I started in the snow in New York in an automatic Oldsmobile wagon, but eventually I could do it in the dry in anything. It was the stunt in The Man With the Golden Gun that inspired me. I have a blooper reel too.
I'm giving this guy the benefit of the doubt because modern transmissions may not allow you to flow around and get from R to D all at once.
@@harborfreight2323 tried it last 30 times...its the car....
@@MK55555. Are you saying it's do-able or not? It's been raining again and I have been having thoughts. Naughty J Turn thoughts. I've been playing with the shifter and it allows you to go from R to D with just a push.
@@harborfreight2323 I'm out again tonight going to try in an Audi s5...
Tmrw I'm going to try a Panamera .... yes they are my family cars ... he also has maclaren but a little expensive to replace those tyres
@@MK55555. Next time it rains in L.A. I am going to look for a parking lot.
Or.....if you slowly creep around a corner and the roadway is flash flooding towards you!
J turn! JAY TURN!!!
Lets try this at home

I've been doing this for years in sticks and automatics. It's rarely done correctly in movies, i.e. never stopping. May I ask a question? With all the safety lock features on an automatic, is that why you didn't flow through it? you needed the wheels not spinning and a foot on the brake to get from R into D?
It honestly depends on the car. My 2015 Jetta is an automatic and I can shift from reverse to drive without hitting the brake before I do it. My gear box doesn't lock so I don't need to hit the brake to do it. It depends on this model and type of car but some automatics don't require you to tap the brake. In his case it could be that he needed to or it could just be reflex. It's not like you pull a Rockford everyday so your brain kinda wants to tap that brake before shifting especially if you drive an auto.
@@mulder19x95 I have yet to try it. I'm having trouble finding a convenient place. So many cameras nowadays.

Brilliant.
'Don't try this at Home'. ;-)
Can you do this with a DCT?
Yes I did it in my '13 Golf TDI with the DSG.

There should be little to no reduction in speed doing a proper J turn. The continuation was not smooth, and you almost came to a complete stop.
Yes. see my comment above.
Cool. But can you do a full 360 spin? 😁
Did you touch the brake when you shifting?
that car looks alive
I know how to do this......a lot of fun!!!
