  • Strap in. This one is an absolute unit. Gav and Dan embark on a lengthy 4 dimensional journey to collide 3 paintballs mid-air, perfectly in focus in front of a high-speed camera, using regular slow mo guys levels of jank and tape and string and stuff.

@@glenncaughey5044to get them to hit at 90° to each other then there would have to be a slight elevation difference between all of the guns so as to not clog the barrels with the missed paintballs. That would be nearly impossible. I think they could do it though. My real question is how many could they get to all hit at once? Three paintballs have a relatively small surface area but twenty paintballs take up a bit of space. Adding more paintballs basically means you are aiming at a bigger target.

This video was absolutely wonderful, and that hug was just perfect. Gav and Dan, you are The Slow Mo Guys, and that is more than enough. Your chemistry, your energy, and the way you make even the simplest premise feel fun and special is what makes your content stand out.
To be honest, every time you bring in a third person, whether it is Scott DeShields from Kentucky Ballistics, Adam Savage from MythBusters, or Destin from Smarter Every Day, something gets lost. It is not about them being bad at what they do. It is just that their presence disrupts the unique dynamic that makes your videos feel so special to me. The magic of The Slow Mo Guys is not just the slow motion. It is the two of you, goofing off, experimenting, and having a great time together. That is what keeps me coming back.
Of course, this is just my opinion, and I know others might feel differently. However, for me, when it is just the two of you, that is when the content is at its absolute best. You do not need anyone else. You belong together, and that is why your videos are so incredible.

Hi guys, paintball player (and paintgun tinkerer) here.
For starters...absolutely bomb-ass content, I freaking loved it. I was waiting for those three paintballs to collide perfectly. When they (sort of) did, I was ecstatic.
I think one of the shadow variables you were fighting was how the guns you were using were cheap blowbacks...I couldn't quite tell what exact models they were but they looked like STBBs (stacked-tube blowbacks). Those have been obsolete for a while in paintball, and are probably why you got variable results in your failed attempts. Reason; the gas valves in those guns were/are not the best at dispensing a predictable amount of air to propel the paintball, and that has a huge effect on velocity. I can tell you as someone who tinkers with vintage paintguns, between how old/cheap guns have crude valves and paint quality is really bad these days, I'm surprised you got two of them to collide, let alone three.
You kept fighting one gun or the other firing "late". Again that was probably a velocity issue due to how you were using cheap unregulated STBBs for your tests. If you really want to drill down on this, use modern regulated guns (I suggest good British technology, Planet Eclipse EMEKs) with regulated valves. You'll spend more money but you'll probably have an easier time. Which is pretty standard in paintball, haha :D

    • @gotindrachenhart
      @gotindrachenhart 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

I think just adding an inline reg and using paint to ball match would have made up a LOT of ground on repeatable shots. PLUS.....putting them all over a chrono would be a huge boon. Stacked tube designs CAN be pretty solid they just take a bit of tinkering with a few parts. Honestly, even buying three used Ions would have been better and possibly cheaper or equal in price IMO and they'd have had an easier time of it.

Immediately thought this as well when Dan was adjusting the stands based on results.
Frankly, even if the guns were perfect, the aerodynamic properties of gel filled balls isn't, and at the scales they're operating on, that's gotta make an insurmountable difference. Like, they could take one of those rigs, shoot it at a wall, and they wouldn't consistently keyhole their prior shots.
You pretty much have to get everything lined up and just optimize for quick resets. There's not much else they can realistically do to increase their chances other than to keep trying.

Maybe you remember the displays in old buses which showed the line number and sometimes had a pixel stuck.

These are plastic blunderbusses. There's gotta be so much variability for muzzle velocity and timing that you were always fighting statistics. Getting them closer makes timing much more important than speed, but you're still sampling three independent variables and hoping they're all within a teensy percent of each other.

I was right there with you guys the whole way, man. 😆 At the outset, I absolutely had like, that ideal of a satisfyingly perfect collision in my mind's eye. But each beautiful yet still somehow "unsatisfying" near miss kept nudging me to be just a teeeeny bit more aware of just what it was that I was _really_ holding out for. That perfect triple collision -- with all three spheres coming together at high velocity in an exact 60-60-60 triangle and mutually touching each other for a brief instant -- is literally physically impossible. Even if you HAD, by some miracle, managed to get something on camera that _looked_ perfectly simultaneous at 82kfps....... well, Gav's comment at 17:34 would then apply to _that_ haha. Slow it down to 2Mfps, and you're right back where you started. In the end, I came away with a surprisingly hopeful & human message: that in the end, "perfect" is just a matter of your perspective, and what matters is appreciating the beauty of the here & now. And the friends you hugged along the way.

@@Berm_Blaster They are not regulated to 0.5%. And only cheap ones are, fancy ones and HPA are externally regulated. But you are talking fractions of a percent. A difference of 1psi (if we're talking 199.5 to 200.5psi, considering markers are usually set to 300fps, means a ratio of 2/3rd, meaning that 1psi difference will end up being 1.33 feet per second difference. And yea, doesn't seem like much, until you remember the interaction space is around 3/4 of a cubic inch in 3d space, and your 120 degree target is 3/4" wide. too lazy to do back of envelope calculation to figure out what 1 feet per second difference would be with barrels 3' from interaction volume would be, but I'd be willing to bet it will be exactly the same as the diameter of a paintball, considering they are missing on average by 0.0002 seconds. 200 microseconds from a 3d impact. Standard deviation and statistics are a thing. You aren't going to have co2 regulators able to regulate to 0.1% shot to shot. 0.1% difference is entirely within the range of heating/cooling individual parts at slightly different rates, oil film thickness changing shot to shot, etc. Real world is messy bro.

The real problem is making them fire at a fixed latency. Once you have that down it doesn't matter if one of the markers fire just a hair faster than the others. Just correct the distance and it will fix the latency difference. But if they won't have a decently fixed latency... Well those hoppers holds something like 200 balls so you can do quite a few attempts before you have to refill them....

@blahorgaslisk7763 especially when they have 3 different manufactuers of cheap blowback markers with maybe different barrel lengths and we dont even know if they tried to them. I can totally see why they had as much trouble and the problems they did. I cant blame them because the gear investment for a video wouldnt really make sense. But I imagine using the same solenoids they used on something more consistent like even a local fields rental emeks. Would have saved hours of heartache for both of them. Hey fellas, there’s a fun thing you can try with old high-end paintball guns: The older guns used to have insane firing rates, like 30 paintballs per second... The gun's regulator had to be very consistent, because if they weren't, the rounds could actually catch up to each other and collide mid-air, knocking each other off course.
One of the big challenges of trying to get paintballs to collide using low-end guns, is that they usually don't have a regulator, and so your muzzle velocity is inconsistent.

    • @razoredgechris

hmmm interesting.. i didnt consider a regulator on the gun end.. i was thinking and suggested they should take out the "tanks" and maybe directly hook them to compressors set at a static PSI or share a pressure vessel so the pressure is consistent to all the guns...
