Absolutely one of the best songs I have ever heard.
Reminds me of being 17 and meeting this girl that was 19.
Her car was broke down and I had a friend bring the part out and I fixed on a dirt parking area by the Railroad tracks.
It got fixed and she offered me $20.00
I took it and she asked if I wanted anything?
I said " Let's go to Dairy Queen"
I used that $20.00 to get us something.

This was my ex and my song. We were together for six years, met in the summer when I was 19 and he was 21. He played it when he dropped me off at the airport to go back to school. I still very much love him and always will, even though I’m happily married to someone else. Now our relationship is just like in the song-over, but looked back on fondly.

I’m also here, just after reading T.J.’s (and John!) Time Magazine interview... The first time I ever heard this song, several years back, it instantly reduced me to tears. I’m a guy in his mid-50s, so that doesn’t happen very often, but my heart could feel that this song wasn’t just, you know, “song craft “, but about real pain from real life. I loved it, then, and even more so, now. Whenever this pandemic madness ends, and we can get back to seeing shows, I cannot WAIT until my wife and I can come out and see these guys again. Much love to anyone who reads this.

I'll never hear and look at this song the same way again after discovering the true story behind it after reading T.J.'s coming out article on TIME Magazine. It's unfortunate it's about his first relationship & heartbreak but it is absolutely beautiful and heartwarming he made this song for the love he had. I work at a 'bro country' radio station and can honestly say that this is the best song I've heard this year. It's just simple, no frills, nostalgic melody. Captures a moment without resorting to cliches or feeling overhyped. Stands out nicely among the other songs on the station.

Tell me more about it please. Whenever I think about this song I think back to 2015 when I was hanging with this petite redhead named Annie. She dumped her boyfriend that night to hangout with me, made love to her on Melbourne beach in Florida. Still the most memorable night of my life, she has mostly forgotten me now but I'll always remember her that night and the untaimed youth and just pure life I had that night.if only I can go back I swear to God I'd give anything.

I have loved this tune from it's published time to now. It reminds me of my wife, we met when she was 16yrs and I was 18yrs. We survived Vietnam and another 10yrs in the Marines. We have been in a relationship from 1971 to now.

The story behind this song, and the loneliness felt while going through a breakup as a closeted person is an all to common reality for a large part of the LGBTQ community. Having someone like TJ share these stories will no doubt help a lot of young people that are in this situation.
When I was closeted at 17 years old this woulda helped.

This song brings back memories of a simpler time when I was back in high school in my final year, with whom I thought would be the love of my life. Song Meaning/Video Meaning
21 Summer is a song about a boy who reminisces on the first love he had, he admits at times he thinks of her when nostalgic things comes up , like the song, the sound of thunder and a similar blue chevy. Also the boy wonders how she's doing because she always been an optimistic girl... especially the night they slept together. The song is more of an ode to the girl as he hope she's still the same hopeful girl and he thanks her for showing him the way the summer when he was 21 years old.
Video Meaning:
The video starts as the boy is straying alone, she approaches him and invites him for a ride. she later takes him to a bar so the boy can get a job, as the summer went on they grew closer, he drives her around, she takes him places, she gives him his first smoke and made love in the backseat.. The rain is a metaphor for when times were bad they had each other... as the video is coming to an end you see that the boy and the girl have some turmoil, they don't talk even though they are both in the bar at the same time... He still cares for her so at the end of the video he gets mad because he knows she has been prostituting for her income while he has the job she helped him receive. in some way he feels indebted to her but in the end he gets mad because he still loves her.

This song makes us think about the one. The first true love. The one that got away. I know I'll never forget mine. Ever. The love for her is still as strong as it ever was tho I have to bury it deep in order to keep living. She was and is my one and only. Shes married and long moved on. We were highschool sweethearts. We just started too fast too early. Broke it off in 2010 a couple years after highschool. People used to stop us and say things like, you guy's radiate love, and I have chills just looking at you. I'll never forget our last dance in the kitchen as we both cried knowing it was over. It's been really tough moving on through the years. It still breaks my heart if I let it. It's one of the few things that can make this guy in his mid 30s cry. I'll never forget her. Ever.
