  • Have you checked a recent weather forecast? Do you understand how the wind will affect your paddling? Is it meant to change whilst you’re afloat?

THINK BEFORE YOU LAUNCH. WATCH, LEARN AND BE SUP SAFE.
Standup Paddleboarding (SUP) is an amazing way to get out on the water and enjoy the great outdoors. It’s easy to learn and can be great fun for all ages and abilities. You don’t need a lot of expensive equipment and you can do it on your own or with others. The simplicity of SUP is what makes it so appealing to many.
But have you considered the potential risks associated with SUP? And do you know how you can help keep yourself and others safe when paddling?

Good video. Another factor to put onto the mix is the swell. If you have got wind and wind waves at 90 degrees to the predominant swell, things get messy. Also drafting is worth considering... it might help someone get back if they get into difficulty and they are in a group..Also the wind is often seems stronger when you are out there, than forecasted, because gusts can be much stronger than the ave windspeed given in the forecast. The power and influence of the wind must never be underestimated!

Good comment Andy. You are so right, there's so much more that we could cover in the video and you have raised a good point.
The SUP safe series of videos is aimed at beginner paddlers who are trying to get into the sport safely. So we didn't want to make the videos over complicated or harder to understand or longer lol! But I think we could do another video off the back of it going into even more detail.
Please keep your comments coming , thanks Reuben

@@SUPboardermag Quite right Reuben...and this issue is an absolutely critical one to raise. When I first started SUP I had no real appreciation of the influence and power of the wind on my newly bought inflatable. Since that time I have had few useful 'experiences' to heighten my awareness! But watching videos like this is definitely a more pleasant (and safer) way to learn! 🤣

On high-temperature days, backwind for the return trip is nice for fatigue and safety, but also a lot warmer with no breeze cooling you down. I also thought you'd include the boards angle to the waves in the basic skills part.

Why is it that no matter which SUP channel you watch, they all seem to be narrated by actor Tom Ellis?
