Tamron 17-70 vs Sony 16-55 Comparison

- The Tamron 17-70 and the Sony 16-55 are two of the best lenses for Sony APSC cameras currently but how do they compare to each other? In this video I'll walk you through each of these lenses and how they compare to each other. The Tamron 17-70 has image stabilization where the sony 16-55 does not which helps a lot for video shooters, when it comes to photos both these lenses perform really well but there are some slight differences.

I picked up the Tamron yesterday partially thanks to your review. I feel much better knowing I got this instead of the Sony
so glad to hear that! enjoy it
i guess I'm kinda off topic but do anybody know of a good site to watch new tv shows online?
@Cain Thomas lately I have been using FlixZone. You can find it on google =)
@Yusuf Dustin definitely, I have been using flixzone for months myself :)
@Yusuf Dustin thanks, I signed up and it seems to work =) I appreciate it !!
I purchased the Tamron 17-70mm for my ZV-E10, and I’m really diggin’ it. It just a good, solid, all-around lens. That extra 15mm really helps out a lot. The price tag on the 17-70 made it a no-brainer for me to purchase as well.
Let’s see what Stewart’s can get me for this time.
nice lol, I spend way too much money there too
Great review and you are the only one to provide RAW samples. Thanks!
Thanks I'm glad they helped
you’re so underrated. this review sold it for me 😅 i’ll be getting it instead of the sony 16-55mm
Thank you so much!!
Alaska is amazing. I lived in Fairbanks for 3 years and spent a lot of time at Chena Hot Springs, Angel Rocks, Mt. Denali and Valdez. There really is a lot to explore and capture out there. Good review and thank you for the honest feedback.
You’re welcome!
Another banger nice overview! I am no longer on APSC but it still excites me that Tamron is continuing to pump out awesome lenses.
Thanks Paul!!
FINALLY!! Been waiting for this direct side-by-side comparison for weeks and finally you deliver 💥
Awesome I hope it helped you!
I have pre-ordered it and cannot wait for it to arrive!! It will live on my a6400. If and when I "upgrade" to FF I will be keeping this combo (along with my 70-350) as a lightweight setup.
Fantastic!
Well, mine has arrived and I'm very happy. I have to really pixel peep to see the softness at 70mm/f2.8. So far I don't think I would notice it in real world use.
If you have to choose between the a6600 with 16 55 2.8 G vs a7c with kit lens 28 60 who wins ? For cinematic videos :)
I think I would go with the A7c and kit lens for now and upgrade the lens down the road
New on your channel. Subscribed. Nice comparison, with no sales/advert talking. Personally I own 16-55 2.8 together with a6600 and I am super happy with this combo especially that I am still a beginner.
Thank you very much! You have a GREAT combo!!
Great comparison vid, besides all else I certainly appreciate that you respect the value of our time
Thank you!
Awesome video man, really helpful! Also probs to for the transparency/honesty about the affiliate links, that's really inspirational!
So glad thanks a lot!!
At the same price wich one would you buy?
I want the best quality/detail but it would be great to have the image stabilization (sony A6300)
Same here - can get the 1655 for the same price as the 70 and now can't decide.
@@ih6901 We need a super detailed comparison
I would get the tarnron for sure the quality is so close and the stabilization is huge
@@ASVideo I will go for the Tamron. Apart from Jakes video there is a very detailled (German) comparison here: th-cam.com/video/OzRzBSV_dkQ/w-d-xo.html
@@JakeSloan Thank you!!
Thank you. I was hoping you would get one to test. I have been watching this lens since it was announced. As of last Saturday none of my local shops know when they are getting stock yet. I don't pre-order until I see reviews so this made up my mind and my bank account smaller.
LOL sorry about that!! It's a great lens and looks like it will start to hit shelves Jan 14-15 so hopefully you'll get yours around then! Cheers
Preordered the tamron should have it mid january. Cant wait to see how it does for car videography. I plan to do a video on it.
Awesome!
Which lens are you using for your videos @NorCai, great video btw, sub!
@@DanKenj thanks man. Sony 18-105 and sigma 30mm 1.4 but both those are gone. Recent videos are all with the sigma 30mm 1.4
@@predrag1 Already got the Tamron? I had the SAME lens as you... Sold the sigma for now, and waiting the tamron to be released here in Europe
@@DanKenj Should be an awesome lens for video. For photos, I use a canon 70-200 f4L with a mc11 adapter on my a6500
Great comparison video! Thank you.
Thank you!
Jake is an Alaskan spy. I just looked at both of these lenses a few days ago to waste my tax returns on and he popped out this video ... great video Jake. Much appreciated ;) keep up the great work. Aloha and happy new year
LOL Happy new year and cheers!!
Yes!
The real question is: Did you download the files? Lol.
Great review on this new Tamron lens and great idea to compare side by side with the Sony 16-55. Thankyou also for kindly providing a link to download the sample RAW files, so interesting to have a look at them in an editor (Capture One in my case) with lens corrections on and off. For sure will likely be getting this Tamron lens sometime this year.
You’re welcome!
This lens alone makes Sony APSC very relevant again and more interesting to me than Fuji. Would be a great combination with the 70-350.
Absolutely would be a great combo
We need 10-20 f/2.8 A RxD VC from Tamron to complete this Trio
@@JakeSloan Just stopping down at f4 or 5.6 at 70mm makes it sharp than f/2.8?
@@amitkrupal1234 make it 9-17 for me ;) It would be a dream, we desperately need an alternative to that Sony 10-18 F4.... even an 2.8 prime from 9 to 12mm would be killer with autofocus and VC, the wider angle + VC would differentiate it enough from the great 16mm F1.4 from Sigma...
@@arfmf Tamron already announced a 12-24 APS-C which covers the wonderful range 18-35 in FF
Will you do an a7c setup video in the future like you did for the a7 III? I chose the a7c over the a7 III for video shooting, but still want to do some photography. You mentioned that the a7c has less dials and buttons for photography so as a beginner, a video getting around the limited controls of the a7c but still being able to get full functionality for photography would be really good!
I will think about that! I idon't have the a7c currently but I might get it back and do one for you!
Nice comparison, can't wait to get mine! I have to 2 questions:
1) did your A6400 need an update to use the lens and all it's functions or did the lens need an update?
2) Is there already an optical correction profile available in lightroom? I saw some youtubers report that at 50mm and up there is some barrel distortion happening.
There is no profile yet in Lightroom, The a6400 did not need an update to use just works like a native sony lens on the camera. You can see some of the photos at 55 and 70 there is a slight bit of distortion but it is very slight and will be easy to correct until a profile is available in light room.
So many many thankssss bro enjoy in alaska with sony and tamron lenses
Take easy great job
You bet!
@JakeSloan 📽🎥🎥🌷🌷✍️💞💞💕💕
Great review! I always have one of the a6xxx bodies as a travel/back up camera. This is going to be the perfect “one lens” solution. And after seeing the Tamron images and video, so glad I never went for the 16-55 2.8.
Thanks for all the great content!
You’re welcome!!
If one has an a6600 and can get both lens for pretty nearly same price, which would be the better choice?
I would still go for the Tamron 17-70 since you have a little bit more reach and the image stabilization really helps
@@JakeSloan but does IBIS work together with 3rd party lenses? For some reason I thought Sony's IBIS only worked with (native) OSS lenses?
And when it came to a 3rd party lense then you'd have to choose between either choosing the body's IBIS or the 3rd party lenses' version
@@OLuvin Sony IBIS works with any lens that reports its focal length. For vintage or manual lenses without electronic contacts, you can still enable IBIS by going into Steady Shot settings and telling the camera what focal length you are using.
So other than vintage zooms... Pretty much everything is covered.
Thanks Jake, great video and information!
Thanks!!
I really like the image the Tamron put out when you were vlogging with it. Is that straight out of the camera, unedited? If so, amazing colours!
This is all straight out of camera. I just make sure the white balance is correct and exposure is good.
One thing I’d like to see in these kinds of comparisons with different focal lengths is to crop the 55 in the Sony in editing to match the 70mm of the Tamron and then say which is sharper.
I often crop my photos in editing by a small amount and don’t notice a lot of difference. In this case with the Tamron a little soft at 70 it would be very interesting to know. Same would go for the Sigma 18-50.
I'll keep that in mind
If I get both the lenses at the same price, which one do you recommend. I don't do videos that much and am confined to vacation photos. I want the images to be as sharp as possible.
The 16-55 then for sure
@@JakeSloan thanks
Another amazing review. Thank you Jake!
Thank you!
Thank you for this great review! I’ve a Sony a6500 and I'm a videomaker but, sometimes I made various shooting photos for the clients. I noticed a difference in term of sharp, Sony 16-55 is better but... as I understand it, there is no reason to buy the Sony 16-55 because the Tamron is definitely the best choise. (I’ve also a Sony 30mm 1.4 for portraits photos).
I’d love to know what do you think about it.
Sorry for my english 😂 🇮🇹
I agree, if you need the absolute best image quality Sony is better but if you need a bit more versatility you should get the Tamron
great video, if possible it would be amazing to see a comparison with the 18-105 as that's what I am thinking of upgrading from
That would be and I'm sure someone will do it. I don't have access to that lens unfortunately
Sony A7C + Tamron 28-75mm vs. Sony a6600 + Tamron 17-70mm for travel? Same size but full frame setup $400 more expensive. Which to choose?
oh thats tough. you get the extra reach with the 17-70 but I think I would go for the a7c and a 28-200! check out my review here: th-cam.com/video/csVOhi8uUQ4/w-d-xo.html
Thanks. I would like to see a comparison between the tamron and the sigma 24-70 mm 2.8. Thank you
Unfortunately I don't have access to that lens
Great review. I got the Sony 16-55 f2.8G as it was only about $100 more (new in box condition) than the Tamron, and it’s considerably smaller if not that much lighter. Also I recently upgraded to the A6700 with IBIS and anecdotally at least the Tamron can be problematic in conjunction with IBIS, and unfortunately cannot be turned off while utilizing IBIS. Worth mentioning the Sony lacks OSS, like most of their top shelf non telephone lenses.
I decided against the cheaper and lighter Sigma 18-50 because of the more narrow focal range - particularly on the wide end - along with weather sealing as their desert I live in is very dusty. It also lacks any stabilization but that was not a factor in my decision.
Hoping Tamron releases a G2 with VC on/off switch and improved materials, maybe a little shorter and lighter too.
NICE
Thanks for the a6400 video test. I think that has helped me make my decision. I'm thinking of replacing my 18-105, will lose some zoom but gain the light stop.
absolutely
I sold my 18-105 and bought 16-55. It's a wonderful lens. I don't take it off my a6500. I might buy Tamron 17-70 to use it with a6000 & a6400 since they lack IBIS which now Tamron has. Btw, won't notice the lack of range. For that buy simple a telephoto lens 70-350.
Hey Jake, I'm looking for a lens in this focal range for a A7 III, looking at the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art, do you have any other reccomendations for a lens I can use most of the time? Doing low light video work.
That is an excellent lens for what you want to shoot. the only other one I would recommend in that range is the Tamron 28-75 f2.5 which is what I use
@@JakeSloan Thanks mate, love your work
Thanks for the great comparison
You're welcome!
Love your videos... Keep up the great work and stay safe!
thank you, you too!
very nice review 👍 now more video comparisson please or more video side content for 17-70
Thank you! did you watch this one? th-cam.com/video/ZGP2SWKJ85w/w-d-xo.html it has a bit more video features
great video but I think you missed one aspect
you did not zoom in in post to compare the sharpness! which i am very interested?
would you be able to give me the answer?
I did zoom in to show but I also provide raw for you to download and make up your own mind
Is it true that the VC on the tamron only works in video? You say at 5:00 that you used it for stills too, could you confirm? thanks
VC available for both, but the added AI feature kicks in only for video.
@@matthieuperbal527 brilliant thank you
Matthieu is correct!
how about Tamron 17-70 vs Sony 18-105 f4? do you think it's a fair comparison? how's the Sony quality in respect to this new (much newer) Tamron?
BTW great video, fantastic location. keep up. thanks
Thanks!
I have to say the crazy color shift is the only thing keeping me from getting this lens. As someone who does multi camera video I think it will be to much of a hassle. Thanks for pointing that out.
Youre welcome
Does this work with full frame Sony’s? Like the FE lenses? I’m curious if it is because I don’t wanna get it if it’s going to crop it...
it's a crop sensor lens as I said in the video so any full frame camera will have to crop in
How much vignetting is present when used on full frame A7 series in full frame mode
quite a bit! you need the full 1.5 crop to get rid of it
@@JakeSloan Ok. I have observed that 18-105 lens has less less vignetting on full frame from 50 mm onwards was hoping this might have same. Still this is vfm lens
hi, did you hear a strange noise as I zoom in on the tamron in the cold?
I did not did you?
Where can I buy the Tamron lense for 799 US-Dollar? Here in Switzerland and Germany does the lense cost over 1100 US-Dollar and more
In the USA but I think you would have to pay too much shipping and VAT to make it worth it
I would say the Tamron 17-70 does give the Sony lens a run for the money, especially with the in lens stabilzation. Really enjoy footage you shoot at that old mining camp!
Thanks a lot Mark!!
Just turned up my heating after watching your videos...! Thanks a lot for the helpful videos!
LOL stay warm
Hello. did you set the white balance manually when taking the photos?
I did but as I said in the video the lighting was changing rapidly so it made it a challenge
I have already Reserved mine at Stewart's Photo, I already have the 70-180 so it should pair with it :)
Fantastic! You shoot APSC? I've often wondered how the 70-180 performs on an APSC camera
@@JakeSloan it's built to make the 60mp A7rIV happy which means it will make a 40mp APS-C sensor happy. It does fantastic work on the smaller sensor.
This is the video that we need! 💣
Thanks!
Here in Switzerland, the Tamron costs 1100 bucks and I could get de Sony 16-55 for 850. Considering this price difference, what should I do ?
If you can save that much I would probably get the 16-55. Especially if you have a camera with ibis built it.
Thank you !
You're Welcome
Tamron 17-70 vs sony 18-105 🤔what do you think ?
Would be interesting but the Tamron will perform better in low light and give you more blurred out backgrounds
@@JakeSloan was thinking how many times do i actually go down to f2.8....and with 1 stop difference in an indoor environment I will still have to use flash :)
Also, how does this lens compare to sony 16-70 f4 in terms of sharpness?
My only wish was that Tamron’s was smaller.
That would be nice for travel but I’ve found it to be great and fits easily in every camera bag I use
Merci BEAUCOUP ! Depuis la France 🥐🥖
Cheers
I live in Alaska and was wondering if you need a license to fly (as a hobby)?
no as a hobby but do check where you can fly by using apps like Airmap
@@JakeSloan Thanks
@@JakeSloan sorry if it was out of context. Fly as in drones as a hobby
I Like 16-55G build :D
Thats a valid reason to get it. Sony lenses are really well built
@@JakeSloan but 16-55G is a beast :D
@@nguyenfrankie5279 No stabilization, a fail
Great Review.... Probably selling my 18-105 hahaha
Nice lol
My favorite Alaskan reviewer
Thank you!
i see 16mm and 17mm have quite big difference in view
a little bit
Beautiful ice country.
Agreed!
I like the tamron, it is bulky though
I do too and it's really not that much larger considering it adds in lens stabilization
Halo Jake Sloan, i follow you and thanks for all information, there is only one problem, i pay 300 to Artlist for no copyright music and all the time have a copyright claim from you tube, this company is so trustworthy have your mine for that. i have all the documents if you need. Thanks and sorry for this post but must you know your affiliates
Have you reached out to artlist to see why? I haven’t had an issue in over 500 videos
@@JakeSloan Yes and we try to find a solution, its crazy that more than two hours with email & etc. 1 video 2 copyright claim with different songs. I hope this stops and I continue to create videos. Thanks again
Спасибо! Отличный обзор! Потрясающая локация!
Thank you cheers!!
У меня a6400 и объективы Sigma 16 mm 1.4 и Sony 50 mm 1.8. Ты бы продал эти объективы, чтобы купить Tamron? 80% я снимаю видео (танцы), 20% фото
I think I would stay with the lenses you have unless you really just want one lens to film everything with but are willing to have less background blur.
@@JakeSloan Но это не очень удобно каждый раз снимать со стабилизатора один объектив, менять его на другой и снова делать балансировку... Вот я и задумался над zoom объективом... Неужели такая большая разница в размытии фона?
Have seen in other videos that bokeh lights suffer from heavy onion rings. What a pity when doing portraits!!
very true
