    I am the bike pacer. You have no idea how hard it is to keep an exact pace with an olympian who can run a 4:30 mile on command and hit a 2:15 half on the nose : ) Meb is an incredible example of a Human Meb(tronome) !

    Look at his form, madness to maintain that for such a long amount of time at that pace.

  • @lessplease
    @lessplease 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    He kept that pace going... about 5min miles or a little less, that's at least 12 mph run! Which is really funny because just yesterday I was watching a show about wolves, which stated a wolf can cover a mile in five mins. Which means he was at pace with this animal. He's a beast... I think he almost killed the bike guy.

      +Axel H They can run at speeds of 36 to 38 miles per hour for short bursts while chasing prey. However, over a mile they slow down and have not been documented to move faster. Probably because they don't want too!

    • @jordywilliams
      @jordywilliams 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Axel H nothing is quicker than a human over long distances. running prey to death, in a pack, is how humans managed to hunt before the invention of tools

      Shea Sawyer well actually, humans are by far the best long-distance animals on the planet. No other animal can run as fast for as long. Our biomechanics allow for that, specifically in the Achilles' tendon and large glutes.

    actually, it is HARDER to properly pace on a roadbike due to a lower rolling resistance coefficient ! The additional resistance from wide and heavy mountain bike tires and wheels allows me to keep a more even pace throughout the training session! thanks for the comment : )

    Just spotted one interesting exercise at 4.11 (minutes) or at least the way he does it is interesting. He is lying back on the ground, leg uplifted and is using a cord to stretch. Rather than just having cord wrapped around the sole of the foot, he also loops it around the outside of ankle and around the back of the leg. I tried it and it gives more support to the leg than just wrapping it around the sole of the foot. So I will follow his example from now on !

      TheLondonCyclist That would have been very nice but unfortunately that's not how it works. Anyone can reach their maximum potential in running but everyone's maximum potential is different. Some people are just born with better qualities for running than others. You can only work so hard without getting injured.

    • @netfischer
      @netfischer 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +TheLondonCyclist sorry bro but if you believe that you are a tool. I've seen both (generally fit) guys trying to break a sub 40 10k after years of training and other guys running way sub 35 after 3 months of training... You cannot overcome these differences in talent...

    Holy crap! I never thought people would dislike my comment that much. All I was trying to say was that people use genetics as a excuse. People have circumstantial advantages, not genetics. Genetics is what every loser will say. Hard ass work is what gets you far. I was trying to say that these athletes were born in circumstances that paved to become elite. Still, they only got there with hard, hard work.

    I don't deny that hard training is vital to being a successful runner, but some people are just naturally faster. That's why Meb, can run faster than even many elite runners despite heel striking, and why most professional runners can't come close to the superstars. It's not that they don't train hard enough or in the right way, they don't have the same natural ability.

  • @pele7208

    A marathon is 26.2 miles which equals 138,336 feet. Assuming a stride length of 3 feet, it will take about 46,112 steps to finish. These guys do it in just over 2 hours...amazing!!

    @Vitos311 A pointed toe at landing will also not allow your center of gravity to move over your foot and you are effectively using calves for power instead of your much stronger glute muscles. Try this: Stand up straight in your best running posture. Then, try to lean your whole body forward from your ankle joint without lifting your heels. If you cant, then the dorsiflexors arent functioning. To correct this while running, think of scraping mud off the middle of your foot rather than the front.

    Steve Prefontaine didn't start running until High school. Mary Decker was doing marathons less than a year after she started running. Oscar Pistorius was running for just months when he set the T44 world record. Usain Bolt was a rugby player until he was draffted to track for his natural speed, and it's no coincedence that countless other elite runners showed phenominal ability from a very young age.

    Your body naturally moves to a forefoot strike when you run fast, and heel strike when you walk. The problems occur when you try to forcibly alter your biomechanics to forefoot strike at a slow pace, or heel strike at a fast pace. Basically, just imagine walking on your forefoot all the time, and how that would be a problem.

    Interesting. You just proved my point.
    Meb clearly is not starving, or even remotely close to it. The difference in size, muscle, and body fat between him and someone who is starving is SIGNIFICANT.
    If Meb to you looks like he is starving you either:
    A) Have no idea what a starving person actually looks like
    B) So influenced by the people around you can confuse Meb with someone who is malnourished.
    Meb is 5'7" and 130. That's a BMI of 20.5 or so. Over 2 points above even "underweight".

  • @jaa89623
    @jaa89623 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Vitos311 More important than where his foot lands, look at his posture compared to a novice runner. He stands tall and leans forward from his ankle joints. This makes his hips his center of gravity and his feet pull back directly under them. His foot is on the ground for only a split second as opposed to the crash and push off of a heel strike. This balanced posture is the common thread among all elite runners and is more of what you should strive for rather than simply how your foot strikes.

  • @jaa89623
    @jaa89623 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Vitos311 Yeah, you're exactly right. The more forward the foot strike, the more your gastrocnemius (upper calf) comes into the equation. Calves are very elastic and add speed (think of how sprinters run) but fatigue quickly. Meb is shorter than Ryan and can take advantage of a low and powerful hip structure to propel him, while Ryan can take advantage of his longer legs and a longer stride. There are trade-offs with both techniques. A true heel strike is probably impossible at sub-5:00 pace.

  • @jaa89623
    @jaa89623 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Vitos311 Running in a barefoot shoe can be a good idea, but probably best used as a training tool for shorter, faster runs. Minimal shoes on the other hand (not 5 fingers, but still minimal heel/toe drop) can be used more regularly for an efficient runner. If you have achilles or calf tightness, this is more of a sign that your dorsiflexors (shin muscles) aren't functioning properly. If you always land on the forefoot, the achilles is always contracted becomes very fatigued.

    ในยามที่ผมหมดแรงวิ่ง ผมจะนึกถึงเพลงนี้ และภาพที่คุณวิ่ง ทำให้ผมมีแรงกลับมาอีกครั้ง ขอบคุณมากครับ

    New rule: unless you have run a 2:08 marathon you can't offer advise to Meb.

    I always find this one interesting because no one implicates bodybuilders in this...which is interesting because they carry LESS fat than someone like Meb.
    Meb is 5-6% BF and BB's will sometimes cut at low as 4 or even 3 percent prior to competition.
    If you think 6% BF is too low I don't know what to tell you other than you have no idea what your talking about.

    If you can't tell, he actually isn't heel-striking. He's landing flat footed which is how you land when your'e barefoot. No elite runner, especially marathoner has bad enough form that they heel-strike.
