I'm torn between the mallard and the call duck. The mallards are just gorgeous in their coloring, especially the metallic green of the drakes and the metallic blue that both genders have on the wings, and the call ducks are just so tiny that they look like plushies.
Those whistling tree ducks are the most beautiful ducks I've ever seen! I love learning about the creatures you show us. Some of these facts I would never have known otherwise! Great job guys!
There are actually six extant families of waterfowl (order Anseriformes), Anhimidae (Screamers), Anseranatidae (Magpie Goose and Fossil Relatives), Anseridae (Geese and Swans), Dendrocygnidae (Oriental Ducks), Anatidae (True Ducks), and Mergidae (Mergansers and Scoters), interestingly the superfamily Anseroidea includes the latter four families, its namesake family Anseridae (Geese and Swans) is by far the most basal as earlier waterfowl had longer necks and larger body size, Dendrocygnidae (Oriental Ducks) are the sister group to the clade consisting of both Anatidae (True Ducks) and Mergidae (Mergansers and Scoters).
Ducks are amazing for rice farmers because they eat alot of the flora and fauna that disturb or kill rice while being unable to (or heavily disincentivized) to eat the rice themselves, all the while their poop acts as great fertilizer.
Every year from late October to around mid March, I see hooded mergansers (my favorite type of duck) in the canals and ponds of my hometown in Florida.
Ah yes I will have a nice flock of domestic ducks on my permaculture farm. They're eggs are worth alot and I'll move em around the farm so they can fertilize and disturb the soil. I'll tell you though the mose useful trait they got is that they will Shred slugs. Slugs will eat my mushrooms Ill be growing at the forest edge so ducks can help gobble up the slugs while ignoring the mushrooms. Really underutilized trait of domestic ducks and any forest mushroom production always can use some.
What's your favorite type of duck? I think mine is the Egyptian goose (though that's a little confusing, isn't it?!)
