This is one of the first expansion packs of a pre-existing game. Previous "expansion packs" didn't rely on or integrate with the pre-existing game, but had their own copy of the engine, and were basically small sequels. This third party expansion was an attempt to bring a Lovecraftian element into the Diablo universe. The hive area was populated with beasts that were supposed to be eldritch and otherworldly, and the crypt is full of cult-like references, and it's boss is supposed to be some super-ancient otherworldly demon more powerful than the lord of Terror himself. Overall the aesthetic didn't mesh well with Diablo's style, the sound effects were loud, jarring, of obviously lower quality, and poorly integrated, the quests were barely stapled into the setting, and had a jarringly different nature than the theming of the entire game setting. As an expansion pack goes, this was pretty poor. The auric amulet and the space where you could transfer items one at a time between characters were great mechanics, and redeemed this otherwise very lackluster expansion. The concept that an expansion pack could integrate into and broaden an already extant game was ground breaking, and Hellfire gets full marks for innovation and influencing the direction of the industry.
While I agree with most of what you said, I disagree as far as the aesthetic not meshing well...well, as far as the crypt levels are concerned, anyway...I absolutely love the crypts levels and I feel like it fit perfectly in the overall Diablo aesthetic. But yeah, besides my love for the way the Crypts look, the rest of the expansion is very lackluster...only a handful of new items were introduced, and even more new bugs were added. They went with a more comedic direction, I guess to add a bit of levity to Diablo's dark, gothic architecture and thematic. The animations of the new creatures were missing frames, so it made them look and move awkward. Honestly, it wasn't Synergistic's fault. They were limited as far as what they could do with the expansion. Blizzard gave them a list of constraints. They weren't allowed to add specific character classes. They weren't allowed to have multiplayer. Anything that Blizzard had planned for Diablo 2 was completely out of the question for the D1 expansion. Furthermore, they were given 6 months to develop and ship it. Obviously you have a better than adequate understanding of the Hellfire expansion...I just wanted to say that I wholeheartedly love the Crypt levels. I wish Blizzard would "officially" release an HD version of D1, fixing a lot of the bugs and quirks of both the vanilla version of the game and the Hellfire expansion. I'd also love to see them implement all the content that was removed from the final release. The Diablo 1 HD mod, Belzebub, did a fine job showing what Diablo 1 could've been...a MUCH MUCH bigger and more complete game.
The Hellfire aethetic is great and, if executed properly, would have been a terrific addition to Diablo. But the new elements were of much lower quality.
I think the issue was that the expansion wasn't able to go far enough with the game assets to emancipate itself from Tristram. There was no way to separate Tristram from Diablo; the relationship was too iconic. Inserting some new, non-hell-based villain and its cohort into the same scenery just can't help but feel jarring. At the same time, I don't think Sierra had enough scope in the project to design a new setting from the ground-up. They couldn't even do the barbarian and bard with new models. So I think they did the best they could with the budget and scope available to them, and I can forgive the hackneyed juncture between Tristram and the hellfire aesthetic in consideration of the meager resources available to the Sierra team and the innovation they managed to salvage in spite of that.
I would however disagree that this was the first expansion pack. Expansions were known back then. This had already been done very successfully for example a year prior to Diablo's release with Warcraft II, another Blizzard title. It wasn't a huge leap of logic to extend the concept of an expansion from one Blizzard title to another. It was the first time for an RPG that I'm aware of, which deserves some points for innovation, but I wouldn't hold it responsible for pioneering the idea that expansion packs are possible in the first place.

I still got the original disc, and it's functional. Now about the "inaccuracy" of the map in regards to Tristram. It is possible someone was there, but it was more than a century since the time the game takes place. Very likely houses WERE in the areas indicated, but may have been damaged by storms or fires, and new structures that players see at that time have been built. Not sure if this was stated in the comments and I'm not scrolling through them all. Thank you for the video. This is still a fun and well made unofficial expansion with all new skins and textures.
I enjoyed hellfire, finally got to play it after all those years. Didn't like the hive but loved the crypt, it wasn't too difficult but that can depend on item drops. They did ramp up the difficulty with diablo himself, even was max resistances he blew me up in three hits. Got there in the end lol kinda wish the extra levels were added post diablo like they did with the LOD expansion.
Content content content mate! I remember not knowing I had to read the tomes in the correct order. Took me dozens of trips to town to survive my encounter with Na-Krul. Do you think the farmer was a projection or trick of Na-Krul to make you get the map and lure you to his crypt?
Na-Krul was easy if you just raised your hydra spell :) With hydra on higher levels you basically set up 5 of them and watch everything falls within seconds.
Many elements were named after famous scientists. Some of the best-known elements include einsteinium (Albert Einstein), curium (Marie and Pierre Curie), rutherfordium (Ernest Rutherford), nobelium (Alfred Nobel), and mendelevium (Dmitri Mendeleev).
I know that one of the Diablo 1 sound files (some sort of arcane-sounding ritual) played backwards said, "Eat your vegetables and brush after every meal." So what's with Na-Krul doing some sort of weird news report?
So the Lich, were they content created by Seirra or ones that Blizzard didn't use? Because the Ghouls in D2 are basically a slightly updated model of these. Curious how that all came to be.
As far as I remember Na Krull was pretty underwhelming regardless if he was weakened or not. He was extremely easy if you do this quest just before going after Diablo.

The Crypt is the most scariest enemies ive ever seen in diablo ever its like 70s to 80s horror movies like tales from the crypt kinda vibe.
It's not my fault the summoners handbook doesn't warn me to not summon demons........
How much I missed this... 21 years! Get it... After school session be like...
Diablo 1 Hellfire is such a masterpiece...
Great video like always, but what happened with that weird farmer? A mystery indeed.
It is weird... nothing sinister, I hope. 😈
I like the channel!
Thanks, Jeff!
The defiler in D1: Hellfire looks oddly similar to the defiler in Starcraft 1. =D
Oh so odd couldn't be because both games are created by the same company 😅
@@beefnacos6258 Crazy right? Sarcasm by the way. Hellfire never made an official release so I assume they just recycled the model.
Hello... Have you tried defeating Na-Krul without using the weakening tomes, just by directly pulling the lever?
5:33 Honey, that fashion is still current ;)
Great video, I can only hope you were wearing your Three Wolf Moon T-Shirt while playing...
Paul Eiding has a killer voice. Somehow hos tome here reminded me of Blood Omen 1 and Simon Templeman's voice. Never saw that similarity between them.
I’m impressed at how you made this game interesting, great work man
Never thought of placing the map itself down. Seems obvious now though. I am gonna fire it up later.
i like griswold's reaction of the map xD
What level were you when you killed him? And your armor/attack?
Sounds a lot like Horazon might have summoned and the locked away Na-Krul.
Was it Horazon? Would that explain why he tries to kill us in Diablo 2?
This game looks amazing on an OLED TV.
I wonder, is the Summoner the same voice actor as Aldaris?
Yup same guy
he's Aldaris in Starcraft and he is also the voice in Diablo 2 reading the lore of the Countess from the tome found in the Dark Wood in Act 1
I loved the bovine armor you could get. walking around looking like a cow
I know that one of the Diablo 1 sound files (some sort of arcane-sounding ritual) played backwards said, "Eat your vegetables and brush after every meal."
So what's with Na-Krul doing some sort of weird news report?
So the Lich, were they content created by Seirra or ones that Blizzard didn't use? Because the Ghouls in D2 are basically a slightly updated model of these. Curious how that all came to be.
maybe the map itself is a riddle: the writing is red and points out a cross. there are many red crosses in the graveyard?
Hewmon! What a Ferengi!
Who else knew the narrator was voiced by the same guy who played Colonel Roy Campbell in Metal Gear Solid?
I just did a run thru D1 (Hellfire & Belzebub mod) I completely missed this side quest. Gotta go back in and do it.
As far as I remember Na Krull was pretty underwhelming regardless if he was weakened or not. He was extremely easy if you do this quest just before going after Diablo.
imagine Diablo 1 Resurrected
I subscribed because good diction.
Ha. When I encountered Na-Krul I got the easter egg monologue, it was hilarious.
I still don't get how they managed to get the original narrator to narrate this stuff, or how they managed to perfectly imitate his voice
Diablo FOREVER
This reminds me of the dropped Horizon and Wart's treasure map quest. Could this have been inspired by the two from harvesting game code??
I never saw this quest :( is this an additional content or mod?
ive never heard of this
once again i heard the aerosmith tickets hahaha!!
