  • Surprise surprise, Megamind 2 is bad. But why is it bad? You probably already know, but instead of just rehashing what everyone is saying, I thought I'd throw my hand in trying to create what could have been: a sequel worthy of following up its amazing predecessor. So sit back and enjoy as I get to tell you my interpretation and fan-creation of Megamind 2: Megamind vs Egor Levushka!!!

This is how I would fix the plot: New group of superheroes appear in the Metrocity, who think Megamind is still a bad guy, not knowing he got redeemed, as they try to defeat him. After a failed attempt of proving them wrong, Megamind decides he needs to pretend to be a villain again so they can finally be satisfied and leave him alone. But after he gets captured, there is a plot twist that the heroes are actually villains who wanted to stop him and to have the city for themselves. Then, he breaks free, fights them and wins.

I liked this story. It fixed the emotional beats and pacing of the story although I kinda wish you fixed the Doom Syndicate's characters as they did exist in the art book for the first film but got cut and repurposed for the video games. There were always more heroes and villains in Megamind's universe, but they were just never established in universe or in the film. I would have liked it if Egor became a super himself (at the film's final act) but not out of nowhere. Egor is basically what I believe the writers were trying to accomplish with Machiavellian but actually cool.

There is actually potential in a Megamind sequel. You could tell a story about Megamind trying to adapt to being a hero but overcorrecting by trying to become the new Metroman and distancing himself of his old identity, until he's faced with a threat he can only beat by embracing the good aspects of who he used to be.....oh wait, we already got that sequel over a decade ago.

My question is, wouldn’t it have been more interesting if not everybody trusted megamind to be a fully fledged superhero? What if instead, people believed that megamind thought he could be the only TRUE villain and that’s why he took out titan. And keikos followers liked megamind BECAUSE he was a villain. So while keiko still remained loyal, megamind lost a lot of villain followers.

Ways they couldve written this Gen Z Keiko kid in a better, nuanced light:
      A) make her a delinquent kid who thinks she's a vigilante trying to look like a hero on camera for her followers who accidently puts people off camera in harms ways that exploit them that she doesn't realize she's doing that Megamind would eventually come around to to confront and address what's she's doing is wrong
      B) make her a negative vlogger who preaches justice trying to catch evidence of all the people she deems as evil that she feels normal society doesn't see who Megamind and Roxanne misunderstands at first but would eventually find out she comes from a broken or neglected/abused home that would eventually teach her it's not too late to be saved and to become a better person
Both these ideas would showcase to kids that just like super powers, social media can indeed have negative consequences if put in the wrong hands

3:16 I think I might know. I’m pretty sure the suits at Universal decided on the name change so as not to distract from their other _more profitable_ characters named “Minion”. It’s no secret that Illumination (and thus Despicable Me) have Universal by the balls, so they probably forced that change on Dreamworks’ writers.

To be fair, I think the name Chum is pretty decent for Minion. I just hate how this change was executed. How about writing a plot point (or an episode in their tv show or whatever) about his identity and how he wanted to become something more than "just a minion". Or perhaps what Schaffrillas Productions suggested, make Megamind recognize him as more than just minoin but a friend, and give him a new name to reflect that. Or just something lol.

This more or less hit a lot of beats I came up with for my own rewrite. Here are some of my own thoughts.
First, I would change Egor's (I planned on just making the main villain Machavillian from the TV show, only his normal name is Mac.) motivation from being mad at Megamind for leaving to being jealous of Megamind. Essentially, he was once a good person who ended up in jail (Around the same time as Megamind so he can be part of his prison family), but because he refused to look beyond the life he lost by gaining a criminal record, he descended back into crime and lost that which he still had. Then, when he sees Megamind succeed where he failed, he tries to bring Megamind down to his level. This was mainly playing into a new theme that came from the "Nature vs Nurture" theme of the first film, which is "You are who you choose to be."
Second, I would re-add the Doom Syndicate. Make them members of Megamind's prison family that get "upgraded" using his technology. They would add as the main "Mini-boss" style distractions for Megamind while Egor works from the shadows for the first and second act. Some of them could even have arcs where they decide they want to change, again playing into that new theme
Third, I would have Egor be a much more low-profile character. He wouldn't be a publicly known criminal (although still powerful), and he kidnaps Megamind's friends and technology from the shadows rather then show up by force. It just doesn't feel right to me for him to try to convince the public. To show off Egor's villainy before this, I would add a subplot where the senators from earlier get blackmailed into supporting Egor, with Roxanne being the only one to find out about this and escape. Finally, when Megamind confronts Egor for the first time, I would have him already taken over the city.
Fourth, I wouldn't bring back Tighten. I get that you can use him to show how intimidating Egor is, but I would rather the main villain and this movie be able to stand on their own. Same goes for the old mech suit.
Overall, good job on the rewrite! I still would prefer if was called Megamind vs the Doom Syndicate since the Doom Syndicate were cut villains, but there were definitely something things I didn't think to add, like making it so the influencer girl has an actual point to the story and Roxanne's subplot. I didn't actually see the movie, so it wouldn't have occurred to me, but I like how you made some things work just based off the potential of a few emotional scenes.

    I like what you did.
However, I have a problem with Ego (if that is how you spelled it, either way I like it that it fit in). Maybe it's me, maybe it's in the way that was explained, but he doesn't feel like a friend, or something from family. Just the leader of criminals, that is all.
I do love the idea of Megamind confronting old friend and delivering, what would be, a heartbreaking scene for both the characters and the viewers, with the villain refusing that reality. There are no easy answers...
Other than that... Yes, so the fact that what made Megamind powerful, his technology. He seems stripped off his power in this rewriting, which... Having people steal his tech is a interesting thing, but him lacking it or even new ones he could make in this movie bother me. Especially so when in Megamind Button of Doom, it's established that he should be himself, thus regaining the tech he sold. (hey maybe it's how those criminals got some of his tech, ahah).
Edit: Well him reinventing stuff near the end works i guess yes.
The main emotional scene is good.
Overall, way better than the actual "sequel". :)

If they were going to insist on Megamind being a former member of the Doom Syndicate, they needed to do a lot more to establish their connection. It makes sense Megamind would have wanted to join a team, but he clearly was working alone in the first movie. So did he resign from the Doom Syndicate? If not, why didn't he ever break them out of prison, especially after he successfully took over the city?
Like say he didn't jive with the rest of the team for some reason or another. They had irreconcilable differences in the past. Megamind likes to do these cartoonishly evil crimes, but maybe the Doom Syndicate wants to do actually evil crimes. Crimes that do real harm to innocent people. So Megamind betrays them, ratting them out to Metroman before they could destroy the entire city. Years later, when they escape, they have no idea Megamind was the reason they were captured, and they think this hero thing is just a ruse as part of an evil plan. So they agree not to "blow his cover." Meanwhile, Megamind tries to discretely come up with a plan to stop them before they can bring back his old mentor, Machiavillain.
Eventually, the Syndicate grow wise to Megamind's lies, and they start to question why he never came for them to bust them out of prison. When they turn on him, they overpower him, locking him up. Machiavillain uses Megamind's watch to impersonate him and ruin his good will with the city, hoping that Megamind will "come to his senses" once the city and his girlfriend hate him again, and he will "remember who his real friends are." Minion appears to take the side of the Syndicate, saying he liked being a villain better.
Roxanne isn't fooled by the disguise, recognizing Megamind's behavior as being very out of character. Minion takes her aside and tells her what's going on, and they save Megamind. Megamind realizes he can't beat the Syndicate on his own, so he upgrades Minion's suit and hands Roxanne a flask. It's super serum, similar to what he used to make Titan. He tells her she is the only person in the world he trusts to have this power, and not abuse it.
Together, they defeat the Doom Syndicate and lock them away in a more secure facility, on the Moon.

I would have imagined if Megamind had a sequel it would have been about Megamind having to prove to the world that he can be a superhero. He feels confident in himself now, but people are still scared and wary of Megamind and people still think he is the bad guy. The villains of this film aren’t exactly the villains but more of the people he need to convince that he is good. I’d imagine these people would be a knockoff justice league but the lead “villain” would be a knock off wonder women. The reason they are mad is because they believe that Megamind killed Metroman. Near the end Megamind proves to everyone that he is truly a good person and idk hallelujah.

Good story, but let me shamelessly plug my own take on this sequel.
Instead, how about we actually get a new character to put into this story to shake everything up?
This new character is named "Thunderbolt", an electric-based supervillain who seeks nothing more than to prove he's the baddest supervillain of all. His secret identity is a guy named Raisuke Morita, Keiko's older brother. He's easily known because of his large frame and equally large pompadour, obviously harkening back to 70s - 90s manga where pompadour wearers were known as big badasses, but I digress.
Raisuke and Keiko moved in from the East Coast to Metro City because their parents had gotten a good paying job there. Raisuke, when he was acting as Thunderbolt, was a feared supervillain often considered to be Metro Man levels of dangerous, not only because he had freakish strength and durability that was also comparable to Metro Man's, but because he always had a nasty shock that could easily fry people to a crisp, overload devices until they blew up, and other frighteningly powerful things. The only things really holding Thunderbolt back is that he's surprisingly awkward to talk to in spite of his great power, imposing build, and typically bombastic speech patterns, not unlike Megamind's own (Just with a thick New Yorker's accent and without the weird pronunciation), and his awkwardness especially ramps up when talking to someone attractive.
So when Thunderbolt first sees Megamind facing off against the Doom Syndicate, the hero of the city promptly manages to turn Behemoth and Pierre Pressure into dehydrated cubes, while flash grenading Lord Knighty Knight into nothingness and trapping it in a jar, having them hauled off to the Metro City Prison, where they'll be trapped in their own cells. Lady Doppler, the only person left, desperately looks for an option, and sees a suited up Thunderbolt standing by. She urges him to stop Megamind, and Thunderbolt quickly snaps out of his funk. He confronts Megamind, arrogantly calling the Doom Syndicate just a bunch of low-level crooks trying to take on such a powerful superhero, inadvertently offending Lady Doppler in the process, before Megamind sighs, rolling his eyes, and taking aim with his dehydration gun. Thunderbolt acts WAY faster, suddenly shooting a bolt of lightning and overcharging the De-Gun, making it explode in Megamind's hand, severely injuring him. Thunderbolt laughs at Megamind for thinking such a contraption would work on him, before savagely beating him up, and defeating him for the first time.
Lady Doppler thanks Thunderbolt for saving her, but is a little offended that he had to insult them. Thunderbolt sheepishly apologizes, before announcing that he has to leave. Meanwhile, Megamind is shocked that someone actually managed to beat him for once; It's been a couple months since the events of the first movie; The Doom Syndicate was supposed to be a gallant pack of criminals, but Megamind's mere presence strikes fear into their hearts. Thunderbolt showing up is a whole different can of worms to deal with, and Megamind needs to find a way to take him down through alternative means, because simply repairing the De-Gun and using it on Thunderbolt is already a moot point, and there are no amount of gadgets that could even possibly give Megamind a fighting chance at dealing with the new supervillain. Thunderbolt rains hell all over Metro City, showing that Megamind is nothing to him, and that he's even worse than the most fearsome villains Metro City ever knew; Even Titan looks like a chump compared to Thunderbolt. The Doom Syndicate are still in prison; Perhaps because Thunderbolt wouldn't be bothered to try and share the spotlight, while Lady Doppler would want to lay low and let Thunderbolt take the heat instead.
Then, Keiko comes into the picture. She's a pretty popular kid at her school, primarily due to being one of those internet stars, but she's grown distant between her and her brother Raisuke, and she comes to Megamind asking how to help her relationship with Raisuke. Megamind gets to planning, and notices a striking similarity between Keiko's brother Raisuke and the new supervillain Thunderbolt; Could this be the answer? Megamind spots Raisuke frequenting a particular fast food restaurant, and a plan is suddenly formed. Disguised as Bernard, Megamind approaches Raisuke one day, asking about the relationship between Raisuke and his sister Keiko, who Bernard claims to have met Keiko when she came to him asking about said relationship. Raisuke sighs, before eventually going into how their parents are always so focused on their jobs, which pretty much means that he had to fend for himself and for Keiko. As of late, he feels as if Keiko is too caught up in her internet fame, knowing how these kinds of stories would eventually play out once Keiko was of age. Raisuke then goes on that there's this nice lady next door, talking about how pretty she is, calling her "Gale". Gale? That sounds familiar... Perhaps is it that one woman who Roxanne mentioned to have been fired from her weather reporting job? Doesn't matter in this current moment, Megamind has to know what Raisuke's talking about. When Megamind asks Raisuke about when he first met Gale, he said that it was when Thunderbolt first fought Megamind. And in Megamind's head... It all clicked! Raisuke's Thunderbolt, and he has a crush on Gale, or Lady Doppler! Megamind, still as Bernard, pretends to check the time, and hurriedly leaves.
The next time Thunderbolt and Megamind meet, Megamind has Lady Doppler captured in order to lure Thunderbolt out in Megamind's personal lair, with her bound and gagged. Megamind then proceeds to drop the knowledge bomb that he knows Thunderbolt has a crush on Lady Doppler, or rather, Raisuke has a crush on Gale. This temporarily stuns Raisuke for a moment, and he comes to the horrific discovery that Megamind either disguised as Bernard or had Bernard feed that information to Megamind, and he is at a loss on what to do. Megamind instead urges both Raisuke and Gale to instead stop their villainy, and they eventually concede.
Now that the villainy is over, Megamind should be resting... But he isn't. He's actually very anxious, because he had set a date up between Raisuke and Gale to the same place where he, as Bernard, had dated Roxanne, obviously before the watch malfunctioned and revealed Megamind instead. Surprisingly, the date went well, with Raisuke and Gale having fun. Then he wondered how Gale would react to Keiko; Raisuke had tried to be a good role model towards her (in spite of living a double life as the supervillain Thunderbolt), but would Gale help? Megamind continued surveying the date as it went to the Morita Residence, and surprisingly... Keiko found Gale cool, even cooler than her big brother Raisuke! Megamind finally rested, knowing that he at least didn't have to resort to permanently harming someone in the end... And then he realized that he should also get to reforming the Doom Syndicate too. Sounds like a Threequel Hook!

After the credit the red light flickering in the dark and the spaceship come to view cut to inside a spaceship there's a screen showing Megamind giving a speech and a word callout "my son" and the blue hand touches the screen before the face that like Megamind but looks older come out of the shodow and said "is alive?" And cut to black

If I could add a forty second segment to this with the comedic effect of my two braincells,
Megamind: *battling the antagonist and ends up hanging off a building*
Hal: *calls him from prison* hey megadude-
Megamind: *still being shot at* oH, hAL, hi what is gOing oN?
Hal: not much really man,, are you busy at the sec?
Megamind: bUsy? Oh no, I’m not busy I’m just.. *hanging off a building, there is a wide shot to emphasise the fall* ..hanging out.
Hal: so anyway, there’s this guy.. he said he was *inaudible because of an explosion*
Megamind: *not hanging in imminent death anymore and is walking on a building roof towards a taller building with a poster on it* *yelling into the phone* wHAT? HAL I DIDNT HEAR YOU!
    Hal: *hearing problems* what?
Megamind: I SAID I DIDNT. HEAr…. *realises what the poster says, it’s from the antagonist about how you shouldn’t listen to megamind or smth* …you.
Hal: oh, well this guy like escaped from the prison and he said he wanted to
*antagonist appears or lands like a foot behind megamind with one of those comedic turn around as Hal is explaining.*
Megamind: I have to go. *hangs up*
(That’s all I got but it sounds funny to me plus it mentions Hal’s perspective and his relationsip with megamind nowadays

I'm convinced that they REALLY wanted to make a movie about The Doom Syndicate, but because it was about villains, they used their starved, Corporate brain cells to throw in Megamind PURELY because the movie was/is successful....and he was a villain (That's 2 brain cells. Genius, I know).
Problem is, by leeching off a beloved franchise, they sucked the blood fully out of it and left a husk of its former self.

i really liked your rewrite; in a way it... sort of makes the original movie worse??? like, you showed that the pieces were there and you showed that they were extremely doable to make work organically in the context of the original movie. megamind's past haunting him in the form of his old prison family is such an interesting premise too. the fact the original writers were this off base is astounding

Hey Dig-Dug, I posted a comment focusing on my rewrite ideas and I would like some feedback. There might be too much to take in. My story aims to make the games and Button of Doom short semi-canon but not fully canon using the film as a template. This comment isn't a list of story beats but rather ideas that need trimmed down and evaluated.
Comment on a Different Video that I Posted:
I'm surprised no one (except Dig-Dug) has created a rewrite video yet that is faithful to the author's vision. I'm sure a talented writer could take bits and pieces of the new Megamind material and rewrite it into an actual compelling story that has mature concepts buried within a parody of known DC Comic storylines just like how the first film was loosely based on the Death and Return of Superman. In my version the Doom Syndicate is a defunct organization with only two members, Machiavellian (whose character is merged with Lord Nighty Knight and inspired by a mix of Brother Blood, Deathstroke, Main villain of Static Shock who uses shadow powers, Syndrome, and Slade) and Psycho-Delic slowly trying to give their old powerless prison gang superpowers with Megamind's evil technology.
In addition to this there will be a B plot setting up a third film where Titan awakens a new antagonist responsible for the destruction of Megamind and Metroman's home worlds in a quest to move on from Roxanne and date Hot Flash instead who also joins the Doom Syndicate. This new unseen force replaces the cliffhanger of the brain since Machiavellian's character is rewritten. Machiavellian's main goal is to recruit Megamind in his gang because he's a huge advocate for the forces of villainy and the toughest prisoner who taught Megamind how to start fights in prison and be a criminal but Megamind wants to move on from the past and not reunite with "bad friends" who he forced himself to connect with in jail while Minion was his only true friend. Machiavellian on the other hand wants to rule the city with his former buddy that he never fought with but merely talked to in jail. When Machiavellian starts showing himself on screen, he won't be called Machiavellian but instead be the stereotypical tough prison guy. Once it's revealed that Megamind got into a prison fight that led to Machiavellian gaining shadow powers (chemicals, radioactive spider, insert superhero cliche here) that's when Machiavellian becomes a true threat. This accident causes him to lose his physical body making him a mere shadow. Another prisoner is also effected that causes him to become all bone known as Psycho-Delic and the two form a connection with each other that mirrors Megamind and Minion.
One of the posts I tried to create (and then deleted because it was trash) detailed a concept about how a Villain school could fit in the universe in a different script but even I didn't like the concept. However, I created a new concept to replace villain school and that is the existence of an underground crime ring that acts like a Mafia ran by some code of honor. This crime ring that was originally the villain school in the film acts as a family for the powerless criminals to expand on the Nature vs. Nurture themes of the first film. Machiavellian is aware that Megamind has a terrifying criminal record that Megamind isn't telling us and like the TV show he will paint Megamind as a villain. Megamind was raised by criminals, but there's a chance that some criminals understand the technology to create supers and that technology is being kept secret by the government including the secrets of aliens like Metroman who come from planets that are being destroyed by an unknown force. Metroman who is aware of this force chooses to be Musician to cope with the possibility that world is fated to end in order to heal his spirit and explains that time is limited. Megamind was socially awkward and had a hard time hanging out with everyone else who wasn't Minion. There could be other ways to make Machiavellian a compelling villain by making him a mentor in the sense that he was a former Giovanni style crime boss before gaining super powers. The criminal crime ring within jail acts as a villain school but isn't one.
As for the Doom Syndicate, the new members would be to replace boring weather lady with Hot Flash and Hot Flash could be Hal's new girlfriend. Destruction Worker is merged with big lava monster with the lava monster simply being a super form. Destruction Worker is an enemy of the mayor. Titan has the potential to come back as a Doom Syndicate member after Megamind refuses and attempts gets his powers back however Machiavellian threatens him before he has a chance. Conductor and the mime character are also mashed into a single character giving the Conductor a way to brainwash people into Machiavellian's new gang. The Judge character is part of the gang, but only off screen as someone who evaluates Megamind's crimes once Machiavellian takes over the city and the Mayor's judicial system. Psycho-Delic would also fight against Metroman in a music battle.
As for the themes the non-existent second film would deal with concepts related to what does it mean to be a hero, being yourself vs being brainwashed into a role. In an interview with the writers, the story is about a test to see if Megamind can be a hero and fight the sins of the past. However we need to go deeper and actually expand on the first film's themes about Nature vs. Nurture. In the Button of Doom we see that Megamind simply wants to be with Roxanne and have a connection with society as long as that society isn't alienating him. The second film should build on that concept with Megamind being overwhelmed and bored with being a hero but also not wanting to be a villain.
Update/Edit: After writing some lines of the fanfiction, I've came to the conclusion that if you want more superheroes and supervillains, you wouldn't establish them in the second film, but the third instead. The second film should have all non super antagonists. Machiavellian's origins are going to be changed again. Machiavellian is now an alien from another planet who has been cut off from the planet the Doom Syndicate resides in and has cloned himself in a symbiote substance that was formerly a subspecies similar to Megamind who gets melted down with a shadow spell that then eventually takes over a brain. This symbiote substance then indoctrinated himself into believing that he is a fragment of Machiavellian and must do everything he can to bring the Doom Syndicate to Earth. The second film in my opinion should have had all non super antagonists since adding them too quickly turns the franchise into MLB or a generic superhero franchise. There would be three non super antagonists (Powerless Hal, the Mayor, the Prison Boss Guy)
