Exactly, for our 12 year anniversary my German husband bought me a “lasting rose” from Amazon. It’s a dust catcher object, open it up from the broken packaging and it was a polyester rose stuffed in an ashtray. My favourite flower, not a rose and he knows that. For my birthday, he gave me a gift card, had 4 dollars on it. He told me to take him with me when I wanted to go to the store as he would pay the rest from our joint account if I wanted something. It’s all making sense to me now

It's only worth it, if one of you earns significantly less. Keep an eye on it. Switch before you plan on having kids. Your parental leave is determined by your netto not your brutto.

Usually, the one who earns less should get class 3 approximately one year and a half before you try for baby. The one who earns more takes 5, but you get your loss back, when you file your taxes. Once the baby is born, the class 3-partner takes the majority of parental leave and you switch back to 5/3 or 4/4 with factor or just 4/4. That will become obsolete advice, once they only allow 4/4 with factor (which is a good thing, because it's a legal loophole).
