Not sure about the health insurance comparison. I am moving from Australia to Germany in 6 weeks and from what I can tell for statutory health insurance (the 'public' system) I will have to pay more than double what I am currently paying in Australia, counting the Medicare levy and my private health insurance. Unlike in Australia, in Germany the 'public' system is not funded by the government but split 50/50 by employers/employees. Currently I pay about 1.9% of my salary for private health insurance plus the 2% Medicare levy but in Germany I will have to pay around 8% (and my employer 7.3%). Yes its true that it will cover a lot of things that my current insurance doesn't, and I will have no gap payments, but I won't be able to choose my doctor and I could always pay more to get more comprehensive cover in Australia. From where I sit (without having actually experienced the German health system yet) it looks like Australia is the clear winner.
Of course you can choose your doctor in Germany. It's even possible to visit several doctors because of the same suffering. In Germany it is called "Freie Arztwahl" (free choice of doctor)

Australia is definately significantly cheaper for health care (and probably also retirement insurance, etc.). That said, I have tested the German health care system very thoroughly: I have been in an ambulance three times, overnight in hospital five times (including two stays of about a week each). I broke my finger skiing (one week in hosptial for intense physio), injured my back doing martial arts (overnight stay with ambulance ride, only a pinched nerve), broke my arm cycling (ambulance trip, two stays in hospital, one for a week, two operations - one to insert a plate and one to remove it and lots of followup visits and physio) and a precautionary stay following a hard landing while paragliding (ambulance and overnight stay with MRI and X-rays although no injury). The standard of care in Germany is excellent and the only thing I had to pay for all of this was 10€ per day spent in hospital. I don't have the same experience with healthcare in Australia but I would say that the standard is probably similar although you will probably have to wait a bit more and you will have to pay more in the event that you need it, although you are paying much less generally so overall it is much cheaper. Other than health care, there are a lot of differences. Cost of living generally is higher in Germany relative to incomes, although it depends where you live. If you choose to live in Sydney or Melbourne then housing will be VERY expensive (I lived in Brisbane and some towns nearby, which is much cheaper). Food is mostly cheaper in Australia but restaurants are more expensive and alcohol/tobacco significantly more expensive. Public transport in Australia is much worse than in Germany and in some places in Australia it is basically non-existant, and you pretty much have to have a car, while in Germany you will at least find a working bus system even in pretty remote places (I haven't owned a car since I left Australia). People in Australia are MUCH more friendly. In Australia you will find people engaging in conversation with strangers and, for example, you will need to endure idle chit chat with the checkout operator in the supermarket or in shops. This is not a criticism of Germany and as you may tell I actually prefer it. But it can be harder to make friends initially. I was lucky in that the company I work for is a startup and the founders were unusually friendly so I had a social network almost from the beginning. One other significant difference is how close everything is in Europe. In a couple of hours you can easily be in another country so the experiences are much richer here than in Australia where you need to drive for hours to get anywhere and have a long flight to get to another country. The upside is that land is cheap and if you want to own a large property in the country then you can have literally thousands of acres in the middle of nowhere if that appeals to you. Overall I prefer Germany, hence I am still here 6 years later (and thanks to the *Ampel*, going through naturalisation - just have to get it before the AFD come to power 🙂).

Compare the size of Australia to Germany - Australia is more comparable to the U.S., or Brazil. So, I can understand why the transportation is not as developed in Australia - the U.S. is much the same! It's expensive to travel within the country. Great video! Americans are more into the small talk, much like our Aussie cousins. I am hoping that President Trump will lower taxes in the U.S., making us more competitive internationally. I'd love to visit Australia & Germany, just to see them first-hand.
Transportation networks are less extensive in Australia because there's nowhere to go, Roger. Most of the continent is empty desert. As Jared Diamond wrote, in "Guns, Germs, and Steel": “Australia is by far the driest, smallest, flattest, most infertile, climatically most unpredictable, and biologically most impoverished continent.”

I disagree with health insurance and internet. We had full private health Insurance for a family of 8 in Australia, much more affordable. Internet, we had unlimited internet in Aust, much better and cheaper. We have been living in Germany for 18 months. We live in Lower Saxony. I certainly agree with the Germans being quite uncomfortable with small talk, lol. They certainly don't get the Aussie lingo and dry sence of humor.
People bag your stuff at the store here in the US but I hate that - they just throw everything in and crush your fruit and mix detergent with food. I tend to shoo the baggers away and bag my own stuff here in the US.

I had a wisdom tooth removed for free (I live in Melbourne) just using my healthcare card. Interesting... Also I have faster internet then most of my online friends from other countries such as the US etc. I think what makes Aus internet bad is the awful range the wifi has. I walk outside my house and the signal drops to zero. So bad.

For seasons? really?. I come from Peru and I only saw and felt a long winter season (more than 6 months), probably 3 and a half months summer and 2 months more or less cold, but everything in terms of my city in Peru. In Lima even in winter and depending on where you live there is sun even in winter and not many grey days or even many rainy days like in Germany. That is one of the reasons (weather in Germany) that many foreigners just move on to other countries + the "friendliness", sadness of Germans. We just can't integrate well.

I agree about children’s books. In our native tongues, we absorb our fundamental store of vocabulary and good grammar via these collections of simple stories. As adults learning a new language, I think we can extract the same benefit from children’s books in any given tongue. Plus, as adults, we naturally advance through them in months, instead of years, which is a self-enhancing confidence booster. Not to mention: It’s frustrating, in an unfamiliar tongue, to hear children talking whilst wondering whether or not they’re spoiled brats. In the UK you can pay by contactless pretty much everywhere, even with your phone. I rarely ever carry cash on me.
