As a mother of twins, I truly can't stand the parents! I could never separate my twins! No matter how much I hate my significant other I would make sure my twins had a close relationship with each other and lived togather. A twin bond is so so special and I would never break that. No matter what you are going through as a parent, your selfish tendencies should dissappear when thinking about the best interests of your child
Not all relationships work out but that is no reason to separate siblings
I get that it's just a movie and blah blah but the parents drive me nuts!

The original is a German story by Erich Kästner from 1949: “The Double Lottchen”
At that time, Luise and Lotte's mother would have had to take children, but the mother was so poor in the destroyed Berlin that she couldn't afford that. The father was a music professor from Vienna who didn't want to take both children away from her.

    • @osmanyousif7849
      @osmanyousif7849 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah, I’m really not surprised that Hallie and Annie were so hostile to one another in the beginning. I’m really surprised that they managed to get through it quite easily, there should’ve been some therapist at that camp.
Although it does lead to another thing that despite being an all around good film, I really wish the movie took a cynical turn, and never let the parents get back together, but also realize their mistake of keeping their children apart. Don’t also make Meredith a villain. Take this movie with the approach similar to Mrs Doubtfire and have the parents tell their daughters that they’re living a fantasy and that they need to move on either way their lives. But that doesn’t mean that they don’t love them, and promise them that they’ll stay together as sisters. The movie can end with Nick, Liz, Hallie, and Annie in family court where Nick and Liz decide that it’s only fair for the two sisters to decide together which parent they’ll live with. The divorced couple wait outside, probably have them apologize for one another for either failing each other from the beginning, as the camera pans out, leaving it, ambiguous to who the girls go with.
Now that would be, a great turn with the tale. You don’t need to make anyone out to be a villain, but equally flawed, but also give the audience a sense of reality, but also optimism.

The timeline for how long the parents were together originally before they split up the twins has always been a bit foggy to me, but I've seen this movie multiple times and while I've never really given it much thought in the past I think I have sort of figured it out .
Here is what we know from what Liz tells us and what the film tells us, firstly the film tells us that from the day of their parents wedding it has been 11 years and nine months, when they meet at the camp. We know from Liz that they sailed on the queen Elizabeth 2 going from England to America, now I don't really know how long that voyage would take, but depending on where they were in England and where they were in America and where they started from it could be around two months that they spend on that boat, now my guess is that maybe they met the second or third night into their boat ride and maybe two weeks later got married, then two months later they ended the boat ride and probably did it that night that they got married so all around that time she got pregnant and by the time they got off the boat she was a few months into her pregnancy they settle down somewhere to start their lives together, but everything fell apart because they were young and in love, we don't know exactly how old they were but Liz says that they were both young and impulsive and said stupid things, so my guess is that maybe they were about 21 or 22 somewhere around that age like early 20s and because of that didn't really think clearly, they were impulsive they were just your typical young 20 something, so once she got pregnant they decided to settle down and have a life together until the big fight happened, which my guess would be about two months into the babies being born so, since we know that Nick did change Annie's diaper, we know that he was there for at least maybe a month or so after Liz gave birth, so my guess is, although we do not see it in the film, since we're only shown it from the kids point of view, my guess is that if we were showing it from Nick and Liz's point of view, then it would go something like they both decided to go on the boat they met there their first or second night into the boat ride, spent two months aboard the boat, a few weeks into there boat ride they decided to get married, then Liz maybe got pregnant that night or a few nights later, resulting in her giving birth birth nine months later, by that point they were obviously off the boat and living together somewhere either in America or England and deciding to start their lives something happened, now the thing that's always confused me is why they decided to split up the twins, but like Liz says they were young they were impulsive they weren't really thinking clearly they were basically just kids themselves so they probably didn't really know what to do, it's also probably got something to do with the original film maybe that'll give us more context as to why they decided to split up the kids, but either way they do and my guess is that Halle and Annie are actually only apart for closer to 10 years, which is still a long time for twins to be separated especially in that scenario, but that makes more sense to me, that Liz and Nick were actually together for closer to a year maybe longer before things fell apart and that the twins actually were only part for maybe 10 or possibly even nine years and nine months rather than the 11 years and nine months which obviously isn't true given what we know, like I said in the film it just jumps straight from their wedding to the day of the camp when the two girls meet, so if we were shown more of the story or shown it from the parents point of view it would be more like 10 years or nine years or something like that and I'm sure they weren't together for very long, my guess is the boat ride was a couple of months, then she was pregnant for nine months, after she got pregnant they were still together for maybe a few weeks or two months max so if you add all of that up it would be something around a year or maybe slightly longer that the two of them actually spent together before things completely fell apart, you let me know if you disagree, but after watching this multiple times now, this is the conclusion I've come to for the timeline of how long Liz and Nick realistically were together as well as how long the twins were actually apart and I think about nine months and 10 years makes the most Sense, even maybe nine years and nine months I don't know, but that's always just been my interpretation, that at most they were apart for 10 years and minimum like nine years, which again is still a pretty long time to be apart especially for twins, but it makes a lot of sense to me for that to be the timeline, I don't know how long those ocean liners take to travel from America to England especially depending on how many stops they make as well as what part of the country they're travelling to and from because both countries are so big, but spending about two months on board sounds about right to me and meeting like the first or second night into the voyage and then getting married two weeks later also sounds about right to me, then like I said she gets pregnant that night or a few nights later and by the time they get off the boat she's pregnant they settle down together somewhere to start their lives she gives birth they spend maybe two months together before they have their big fight they split the kids and they go there separate ways until the camp where the two girls meet and the movie begins, but you can let me know what your thoughts are, that's just always been my interpretation after watching this film multiple times, this is the timeline I came up with

Quite interesting to see that no one here mentioned that neither that or the 1961 version are the "original". At least in the 1961 version, it was still mentioned in the intro what this movie was based on... they left that out completely in the 1998 version.
The story is originally written by famous German author Erich Kästner, who also wrote the script and narrated the first movie version of "Das doppelte Lottchen" (The double Lottie) in 1951. Since then, there have been a number of other german movie versions, both real actor or animated.
They tend to be a bit more, hm, "real" than the heavily "americanized" or "disneyfied" movies mentioned here.
Nothing against Lindsay Lohan here - she did a fantastic job acting this double role, and the technical side is immaculate - but I still prefer the German versions.

You'd be kept at the side of your counselor 24/7 no alone time or fun most likely until your parents got there to pick you up early in shame. Honestly, as an adult, both the isolation cabin and both of the girls' lives look amazing still like those HOUSES ALONE. Although I prefer the vinyard house

Felt the exact same way about this movie as you do when I was a kid. As I got older and started liking old movies, I would watch the 1961 Parent Trap with my mom and I love that one as well😍

xD The parent trap, The flying classroom Emil & The Detectives, Anna Louise and Anton seem to get re-makes every 2 decades at least, I am not sure how famillliar english speaking countries are with these, since they're all based on 1940-50s German books by the author Erich Kästner (yes even the 1995 version, where the Twins (ironically played by Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen) ended up being just "doubles" belongs into the "re-"makes or loosely based translations of "Das doppelte Lottchen worldy translated The double Lotte/y aka The parent trap!" The "original" the USA has is already 15 years older than the first Versions German people got in black and white TV times in 1950.
I know randomness am not even sure while I feel the need to give these knowledge nuggies to people who watch either Version (een I have to admit that the USA versions are a tad cooler than the German once especially in the 21st-22nd century) but it also reminds me of how old I should/could be given that righ tnow as I am typing it there is yet another "Flying classroom" airing in ceinemas because the Zeitgeist once again seemed to have changed enough and boys only internats really aren't that affordable or en vogue anymore 🤭

This movie is perfection. Nobody can replace Lindsay Lohan in that movie. (Especially following that with Glee and Freaky Friday). We watched it while I was on a family vacation and it never gets old: As an identical twin myself, Mr and my sister didn’t switch places but a bunch of people would have a hard time figuring out who’s who. Those poor guys couldn’t be able to tell which one’s Rachel and which one’s my sister, Victoria. It was so funny. Mostly by our glasses rim colors, people could tell which one’s me and which one’s Victoria

Where I come from, parents pierce girls' ears at toddler age. So when I saw this movie as a kid I thought a girl at that age not having pierced ears was a British thing. 😂 Nah, bellybutton was the only piercing girls did in secret, though not at my summer camp.

GOD I love this movie so much!! My mom and I re-watch it constantly too! It's just so fun and sweet. And man Lindsay killed it!! Watching this with you was so fun! Your commentaries are always such a blast!
Also a fun thing about the twins switching places comment; there was a set of twins in my grade in my elementary school and for some reason they were in different classes in I believe it was 4th grade so on April Fool's Day the whole school got in on having the boys switch classes to see if their teachers would notice. It went so well that they actually stayed switched for either the entire rest of the year or nearly the rest of the year. I wasn't friends with either of them so I never got any specific details but I know our entire grade was in on it and other teachers plus their parents had approved it so nobody got in trouble. I assume they just switched homework and stuff when they got home lol. And it's elementary school so it isn't super detrimental either. It was so funny to us. I am also an only child and this movie made me want a twin so freaking bad growing up hahaha

You should watch it takes Two next, For a long time I always thought that was the original parent trap film people were referring to, until I saw the original and realised it wasn't, but they are so similar, instead of twins separated at Birth, they're strangers, which makes it even more interesting and it has Chessy in it. Also I always thought it was weird that in the movie her name is Chessy not Jesse, which would make more sense?

A fact that makes me love this even more is the actress who plays Meridth (the gold digger) is also the same actress who played Alexis Carrington in the new Dynasty who has the same characteristics as Meridth to make this even more interesting Alexis Carrington disappeared at around the same time as this movie takes place. So my little fan theory is that Meridth is Alexis Carrington trying to find another Blake Carrington to swindle
