“Great video! However, I have to disagree with your final pick. In my opinion, the QNAP TVS-h874X-i9-64G-US is the best NAS of 2024. Synology’s 8-bay options are solid, but without integrated graphics, 10gb, Gen 4, they fall short for Plex or any multimedia use. A NAS needs to handle multimedia effectively, and integrated graphics are essential for that. While cost matters, hardware is the foundation, and software brings it all together. Just my two cents!”
@Ghericksonandson plus zfs is much stronger than what synology offers. Then factor in the speed and power and a real decent os, and it seems one sided to me.
I have to disagree with both. The choice shouldn't be between a 2020 Synology model and 2023 QNAP model that makes you pay 2-3 times what the price should be. Jesus H. Christ, for the price of that QNAP you could build a DIY with 4x20TB drives and still save money.
Hi, Remember that the Asustor Lockerstor 6 Gen3 AS6806T has 6 SAT3 bays but another 4 M.2 PCIe 4.0 SSD bays that can be used as cache or storage. Greetings and of course thumbs up!
I honestly don't understand how Synology knows they are the market leader and all the customer is asking is for a slightly better CPU and 2.5GB to 10GB ports and they would walk away with most of the buyers.
As someone who owns a DS1821+, i would advise caution to new buyers looking to purchase a synology nas. Their RS and xs+ lines are supporting fewer and fewer non-synology branded drives. I suspect this tactic for driving sales to their outrageously priced synology drives will come to the base DS line of nases.
Why does no one mention that Synology has NO support? They offer no paid support with guaranteed response time. And the support they do provide can be absolutely awful, leaving questions unanswered and issues not resolved.
Maybe other brands don't have excellent support either so many people switched omv/ truenas / unraid on the Nas But all they need is hardware spec which is zero on Synology system 😂
@@JohnSmith-zl8rz Yeah, I'm guessing by Direct Attached Access, @nascompares probably just means IP over Thunderbolt, but would be great to get some clarification.
Im still using Qnap TVS- 871 with 10 gbe and 4 nvme on two PCIE slots and 8x Seagate 20 TB after up-great from 5 TB and from i3 to i7 4770s and 16gb ram working like a charm. Very happy
I think we should not go overboard with saying that Synology software is so much better than QNAP or whatever. Let us first ask ourselves what we want with a NAS, only backing up data, or sharing share folders with housemates for their personal storage. Or do we really want to have 4 or more applications running for different tasks. And which one gives the best performance without bothering anyone else, or a process getting in the way of an application.
Ended up biting the bullet and grabbing the QNAP TS-855eU even though I couldn't find it on sale. QNAP did offer $120 though with their Upgrade program. Since I'm upgrading from my current TS-863U from 2017
I'm holding out to see what Synology do with their next releases to see if I will stay with them or switch brand. Still running an old ds412+ so it really needs an update, but have a held out this long I can probably hold it a bit longer... =)
Unfortunately, I can't (sorry for the lame answer)! This is becauae each solution suits a very different kind of user, as well as very different storage type and pricing models. One person's 1-2-3 could be another's 3-1-2.
So does this seem like a good deal? QNAP TVS-h874T with 3x Seagate IronWolf 12TB for £2,540. Direct from qnas UK. The Nas is reduced and I added the BF15% code also.
NEED A NAS!! Struggling cos Synology has got poo and old boxes, can’t get a ugreen, lockstor too dear, qnap lol what’s the best 4-6 bay 10gbe that actually works?
The N95 version of terramaster F8 at 449GBP are very attractive also Still got full quicksync support and can run some docker / lightweight stuff on it
I'd still like to see more about that U-Nas 8-bay case from about a yr ago. I don't think you ever ended up doing a build on it. I'd especially like to see how an matx build ends up and how it handles heat.
Tough one. The thing is, the 8 bay is just 4 bays bigger than the 4 bay...and that's really the only proper difference. Yet it's several hundred more and at that point you are tip toing against other devices at that price point. The reality is that I do not think it is "top 3", as at the 8 bay scale, there are other systems providing very similar hardware BUT also with better software. Whereas at the 4/6 Bay level, there are very few options that gives he same h/W as the Lockerstor G3. Does that make sense? Hope so.
Synology support their devices for approx 8 years. I wouldn't have expected a low powered (referring to CPU) device with half of its support window having already expired to be even near the top 3. Add to that the fact that they are removing features such as video codecs that were there at launch. Does it really belong here?
I’ve been seeing the UGreen DXP8800 Plus on offer here stateside for a few days now. Perhaps upwards of ~$225 USD off. Mind you it’s still not lower the Kickstarter introductory price (under ~$1000 USD) but likely an all-time low for the retail price (~$1500).
Because in a month's time, people will be looking at this video and wondering if they are 1) still available and 2) have they been super seeded by a new release (also hence why I added a load of DS1835+ caveats).
Can’t get ugreen NAS in Canada, unless you choose a shady 3rd-party seller on Newegg or Amazon. Makes it a no-go for me. This list should have included actual worldwide options, or those that are actually available in full continents rather than just subsets.
Ugreen can kiss my ass. I signed up for the gofundme thing or whatever it was. Actually wanted the 8 bay to replace my synology 12 bay (+12 bay expander I dont use). Their sy stem couldnt processes my request. WAited weeks to get a reply out of them. Nothing. Price went up twice since. Ill never bu y one fo theirs.
Great content and very informative. However, UniFi needs to work on their supply chain issues. It is a symptom of poor forecasting. UNas Pro released but sold out. They build the excitement and then leave you in the dust. Not a good way to run a business. Great products but I am not impressed or amused by the supply chain issues.
if the bottleneck is the hardware, the software is useless to everyone. my 12700 truenas box has none of the hardware bottlenecks, but its lacking some of the built in features available on my slower qnap via software, BUT i can do something about it if i choose.
@nascompares that will be interesting, look forward to see why... The 878 is on my next next purchase with an I7. To me a turnkey zfs solution is far more valuable than the 1821 with it much lesser file system and capabilities. Speed wise and capabilities go to the 878. The os on ugreen and teramaster are weak. Plus the firmware on both is always going to be suspect to me anyways. Tough time getting my head around this review, but hey 👋 we all have opinions on this stuff...

@SeanWoods-u9p to me they rob from the small business and give to enterprise. They walked on prosumer and don't know if they ever will look back...

I'm going for the QNAP TS-873A-8G all day long.
The UGREEN now does Direct Attached Access? And, is that truly direct (DAS), and not just IP over Thunderbolt?
Same question, I need a DAS
@@JohnSmith-zl8rz Yeah, I'm guessing by Direct Attached Access, @nascompares probably just means IP over Thunderbolt, but would be great to get some clarification.
Is there a DAS that has the same sort of small form factor as that Terramaster?

The Video I have been waiting for
Thank you for the good vibes dude!
@ thank you for your Videos!! They‘ve helped me so much!!
Thanks for getting to my Question about thunderbolt ports and it capabilities ..DAS appreciate ya
Is there any chance to get this Format for Rack units?
what is best 2 bay nas with 10Gbits LAN?

Just in time when I'm browsing for NAS to by
Just diy one.

Robbie: any news on new QNAP models?
Terramaster F8 SSD PLUS price is impressive, but I'd still also consider Sonnet 8x4 PCIe card and custom NAS/server build :D
sehr schöne Funktion, mit der automatischen Audio-Übersetzung - gerne immer wieder, wenn es nicht zu großen Aufwand erzeugt
So out of all listed, which is the best to buy. Can you rank them from best to least?
Unfortunately, I can't (sorry for the lame answer)! This is becauae each solution suits a very different kind of user, as well as very different storage type and pricing models. One person's 1-2-3 could be another's 3-1-2.

Stop being Synology bias. I would not buy Synology right now. Over priced and under powered.
And the fact they don’t update the hard drive compatibility list to the newer third party drives is another downer
9:07 lol

Afraid not. But man alive... THEY BETTER HAD DO...

I really like the QNAP TS-855Eu-RP :) Just a bit pricey, but perfect for a small livingroom rack
