    Key facts
These are a mix of facts from The Gambling Commission Report 2019, Guardian website, Gambling With Lives website and Google Search.
The facts don’t receive much airtime; I’ll let you decide for yourself why that might be.
    Economic:
    • UK Betting Industry worth around £14.4 billion in 2018/19 (up from £8.4 billion in 2008)

    • Men are 7.5 more likely than women to be problem gamblers
    • 1 in 4 young men are at risk from gambling problems
    • While only 4% of people nationally gamble online, almost 35% of at-risk gamblers do
    .
    Health:
    • Gambling is a mental health disorder. It was classified in 2013 alongside alcohol and drug addictions
    • The industry made nearly £14 billion gross profit in 2015/16. It contributed £8m to pay for research, education and treatment
    • 2% of gambling addicts were able to access treatment - compared to 15-20% for drugs and alcohol addictions
    .
    Suicide:
    • UK and international research have found that 4-11% of suicides are related to gambling which is equivalent to 250-650 deaths per year in the UK
    • Research from Sweden found that gambling addicts are 15 times more likely to take their own lives than the general population
    • Gambling addicts are 3-4 times more likely to attempt to kill themselves than other types of addict.

Why are Betting Companies based abroad?
    GIBRALTOR CASE STUDY
    • Gibraltor is home to: Bet365, William Hill, Labrokes Coral, Unibet, Tombola, Betfred, 888 Sport, 32 Red, Playtech, GAMEIOM, Boyle Sports, bwin.
    • Key benefit to companies is that all marketing expenses in Gibraltor can be classified as VAT exempt (they save 20%)
    • They pay tens of millions per month on marketing, so this adds up to huge sums of money saved
    • E.g. half the Premier League football teams have shirts sponsored by betting companies. E.g. 17 out of 24 Championship football clubs are sponsored by betting companies, i.e. Derby/Wayne Rooney/32 Red (I wonder why he wears the 32 shirt)
    • Cooperation tax is 10% in Gibraltar (compared to 20% in UK).
    • There are other locations for betting companies like Malta and The Channel Islands.
