Announcing The Invisible Addiction
Hey guys, just wanted to make a quick video to announce The Invisible Addiction.
It's a blog and podcast series about problem gambling in the UK.
Would appreciate it if you gave us a follow on social media.
(The gambling podcasts are over on the TH-cam channel).
Thought you'd like to know where I've been, otherwise it would've been very rude not telling you!

Alex Lewis Podcast #8: ‘REF-ER-EE!’ | Tales of a non-league football referee
มุมมอง 1514 ปีที่แล้ว
ABOUT PODCAST #8 Hey guys, welcome to Podcast 8! In this episode I talk about my time as a non-league football referee. Aside from the world’s longest intro (!), I answer listeners questions: Did you prefer playing football or refereeing? (Alistair) How much do referees get paid? (Liz) What was the best game you refereed? (Jonny) What was the worst game you refereed? (Dave) Who was the best pla...
1. Ashmansworth, Faccombe & Combe Gibbet VLOG
มุมมอง 2304 ปีที่แล้ว
I recently took a road trip near the Hampshire/Berkshire border. I took in the views at Ashmansworth, Faccombe and Combe Gibbet. And what a nice day it was to vlog! First of all I took in the amazing views at Ashmansworth. I love that place come rain, shine or snow. The GoPro just doesn’t do it justice! But I highly recommend visiting yourselves. Next up was Faccombe, and the Jack Russell pub. ...
WHAT'S YOUR OPINION? I need to ask!
มุมมอง 984 ปีที่แล้ว
What is going on guys. I need to ask your opinion: what do you like/want more of from this TH-cam channel? I've focused heavily on the podcasts, and the upcoming series on problem gambling. That's been great, if a little heavy going at times, so I'd like to make more light hearted videos, if truth be told. Do you like indoor videos, e.g. sofa chats? Do you like outdoor adventures, e.g. country ...

Mental Health Awareness Week VLOG
มุมมอง 664 ปีที่แล้ว
It's mental health awareness week in the UK and so I thought I'd share a Vlog with my advice and tips about how to look after your mind and body. It's something very close to my heart as I've suffered with the fair share of problems, like depression, anxiety, stress, lack of sleep, debts, gambling addiction, drug addiction, business failure, lack of self-worth, panic attacks, relationship break...
Alex Lewis Podcast #6: ‘YOU'RE FIRED!’ | Tales of a cruise ship musician
มุมมอง 854 ปีที่แล้ว
ABOUT PODCAST #6 In this weeks podcast, I talk about how I got fired from a cruise ship. (I know, absolutely ridiculous). I feel like all the podcasts are exposing stuff that really don't stack up in my favour in terms of life achievements. But what the heck. It's a decent story to tell the grandkids! So yeah. The podcast is conversational and relaxed in nature. WARNING: it contains swearing an...
Countryside Walk in Berkshire Vlog!
มุมมอง 2204 ปีที่แล้ว
Come and join me on a big walk round the rolling countryside of Berkshire. There's plenty of outstanding scenery and nice animals to see. The big pull is that whilst on the A34 flyover we play the 'can you get a lorry to beep the horn' game. So, pour yourselves a nice big cup of tea, sit down and settle-in for adventure time. "Combining adventure, road-to-nowhere stories, and ridiculous convers...
Alex Lewis Podcast #5: ‘ROUTINE IS KEY’ | The Importance of Keeping a Routine in Your Daily Life
มุมมอง 944 ปีที่แล้ว
ABOUT PODCAST #5 In this podcast I talk to you about the importance of keeping a routine in your daily life. It is ideally for people who are struggling during lockdown, feeling low and without structure in their lives. Having been self-employed for the past 7-8 years, I fully understand the importance of adding a routine to your day, especially when there’s not much to do! I used to be the kin...
What it's like getting tested for Coronavirus
มุมมอง 934 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey guys, I decided to vlog my experience of what it's like being tested for COVID-19. My girlfriend, who's a nurse working on the front line, was showing symptoms so we both headed to do a self-test at a drive-in centre. Stay safe and wash your hands! I will update you about my results soon.
Alex Lewis Podcast #4: ‘TALKRADIO INTERVIEW’ | A de-brief after my Gambling Addiction Story
มุมมอง 2334 ปีที่แล้ว
ABOUT PODCAST #4 This week has been very busy. TalkRadio got in touch (what the actual!) and wanted to hear my story and thoughts on the new government ban on gambling adverts on TV and Radio during lockdown. Having released the podcast last week, to get asked to go on radio and speak about this topic was nuts. I felt like an idiot (usually do anyway!), but it was good to have an opportunity to...
Phone Box Review.
มุมมอง 4234 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a phone box review on the Albert Road in Southsea. Some might say I've not been productive during lockdown. Well, I tend to disagree. From the video I will answer these key questions (and more!): What do phone boxes smell like? Do phone boxes still have business cards in them? Can you use contactless payment?
My First Actual Vlog | Wednesday Evening After Hotshots
มุมมอง 634 ปีที่แล้ว
I keep going on saying how much old footage I've got. Well, it's time to put my money where my mouth is and start uploading from the archives! This is a video recorded straight after Hotshots Football, on a Wednesday night in June 2018. This video is all a bit innocent and nervy, but there is a certain charm to it that I like. I bloody wish I'd just uploaded it back then!! Hindsight is a wonder...
Alex Lewis Podcast #3: ‘GAMBLING COSTS LIVES’ | Opening Up About My Gambling Addiction in the UK
มุมมอง 3K4 ปีที่แล้ว
ABOUT PODCAST #3 This podcast is about my gambling addiction during my twenties. I don’t want to write too much about the podcast, other than to warn you it gets very emotional and intense at times. It’s aimed at men in particular, as statistically we are more likely to become problem gamblers. (Please see key facts on my TH-cam comments - too long for this description!). This podcast won’t be ...

I attempted exactly the same in hot, dry weather on a bike without suspension two years ago. It is, without exception, the worst experience I’ve ever had on a bike. In fact I think it’s the worst thing I’ve ever done, full stop. I had to go see the doctor for injuries sustained attempting it. Don’t do it. Don’t even think about doing it. Alex, I feel your pain mate - well done for getting to the destination.

Gambling is everywhere My state for many years disallowed casinos. The only reason was because of concern regarding loss of lottery and parimutuel horse race betting revenue. The state has now passed legislation to allow casinos and in 2023, there will likely be 2 half a billion dollar casino resorts within an hour’s drive from where I live. I have gambled for many years, and have traded stocks, futures and options for many years. I don’t consider trading in stock market gambling, because with skillful trading, you can trade with an advantage, whereas no matter how careful and knowledgeable you are with gambling, the casino always has the edge, except perhaps poker and blackjack. With poker, you must play at a professional level to have an advantage, which would require you playing poker as a career. With blackjack, even if you are able to develop card counting skills, the casinos make it very difficult for you by using 8 decks, auto shuffle machines and ending shoe with many cards never played. So, if your goal is to turn your hard earned money, into more money, the most reasonable way is to learn how to trade the market, and study so you have an edge with trading. You won’t get any comps for free room or buffet, but you can actually build wealth and vacation somewhere nice without cigar smoke blowing in your face and rather than staying at a casino with crowds of zombies hypnotized by the 1 armed bandit in front of them, making noises in c minor.

Somebody called Charlie Hunt is mentioned just before Alex reaches Cobblers Lock on Freeman's Marsh west of Hungerford. Little did he know that the Lock keeper was Sidney Herbert Hunt (1882 - 1955) and his father was Charles Hunt, master builder from Great Bedwyn. Sidney (known locally as Herbie) was my grandfather. Cobblers Lock is still called Herbie's Lock locally. Alex, you missed out the best bit of the Canal!!!

Key facts These are a mix of facts from The Gambling Commission Report 2019, Guardian website, Gambling With Lives website and Google Search. The facts don’t receive much airtime; I’ll let you decide for yourself why that might be. Economic: • UK Betting Industry worth around £14.4 billion in 2018/19 (up from £8.4 billion in 2008) • UK government earned around £2.9 billion from gambling in tax year 2017/18 • In the US gambling is worth $500 billion per year • 23 million people in US go into debt because of gambling. Their average loss is $55,000. • UK has largest unregulated online betting industry, worth around £5.4 billion per year. Law: • Betting was legalised in the UK 1st May 1961. In the first 6 months over 10,000 betting shops were opened • The Gambling Act 2005 permitted gambling companies to advertise on television and radio • There was a 600% rise in gambling adverts from 2007-2014 in the UK • 18% of gambling adverts on TV today are related to gambling Society: • More than 2 million people in the UK are either problem gamblers or at risk of addiction • There are 55,000 gambling addicts in the UK aged 11-16 years old • Men are 7.5 more likely than women to be problem gamblers • 1 in 4 young men are at risk from gambling problems • While only 4% of people nationally gamble online, almost 35% of at-risk gamblers do . Health: • Gambling is a mental health disorder. It was classified in 2013 alongside alcohol and drug addictions • The industry made nearly £14 billion gross profit in 2015/16. It contributed £8m to pay for research, education and treatment • 2% of gambling addicts were able to access treatment - compared to 15-20% for drugs and alcohol addictions . Suicide: • UK and international research have found that 4-11% of suicides are related to gambling which is equivalent to 250-650 deaths per year in the UK • Research from Sweden found that gambling addicts are 15 times more likely to take their own lives than the general population • Gambling addicts are 3-4 times more likely to attempt to kill themselves than other types of addict. Facts from the 2019 Gambling Commission Report in the UK: • 8,320 betting shops • 651 bingo premises • 154 casinos • 179,556 gaming machines • 47% of people have gambled in the past four weeks (December 2019) • 21% of people have gambled online in the past four weeks (December 2019) • 50% of online gamblers have gambled through a mobile in the past four weeks (December 2019) • 15% online gamblers gambled in the workplace • 56% of online gamblers have more than one online account • 51% respondents have seen a gambling advert on TV in the last week • 0.5% or people aged 16+ in England are classified as problem gamblers according to PSGI or DSM-IV in 2018 • Only 33% of people think that gambling is fair and can be trusted; 71% think that it is dangerous to family life. Why are Betting Companies based abroad? GIBRALTOR CASE STUDY • Gibraltor is home to: Bet365, William Hill, Labrokes Coral, Unibet, Tombola, Betfred, 888 Sport, 32 Red, Playtech, GAMEIOM, Boyle Sports, bwin. • Key benefit to companies is that all marketing expenses in Gibraltor can be classified as VAT exempt (they save 20%) • They pay tens of millions per month on marketing, so this adds up to huge sums of money saved • E.g. half the Premier League football teams have shirts sponsored by betting companies. E.g. 17 out of 24 Championship football clubs are sponsored by betting companies, i.e. Derby/Wayne Rooney/32 Red (I wonder why he wears the 32 shirt) • Cooperation tax is 10% in Gibraltar (compared to 20% in UK). • There are other locations for betting companies like Malta and The Channel Islands.
