Mima's tale of self identity coupled with the constant threat of obsession under watchful eyes creates a psychological thriller unlike any before or since. Satoshi Kon was a master of his craft, and his art lives on as a classic and underappreciated film.

Might have been from one of those Vanity Fair round tables where the four or five most critically applauded actresses of the year discuss their roles, methods, some life stories and insights, etc. I’m like 95% sure Jessica Lange was telling that to Elisabeth Moss, Nicole Kidman, and Jennifer Lopez because Elisabeth moss’s character on Hand Maid’s Tale is abused in every conceivable way and Nicole Kidman’s Big Little Lies character was also a victim of domestic violence and s*xual assault.
I've honestly wondered the same thing. Some guys I know were talking about actors mostly being crazy, and I brought that up. Putting yourself in heightened emotional state so much so often can't be good for you
I feel that anime in the 80's and early 90's were more adult storylines. I still love anime but its harder to find content that is not marketing to teenagers.
Less feature lenghts movies or just that we still have to wait next decade for their impact to settle in, but still many adult themed anime series: Ergo Proxy (they did Genocidal Organ (2017)), Parasyte, Psycho Pass, Monster...
the other thing is, in the 90s there was a lot of anticipation, because the future looked promising and interesting and society changed fast, so they did a lot of Black Mirror style of reflection at the time (their worst fears became our everyday routine kind of work, and good work it was!).
Nowadays, it's a lot more of introspection, reflection on past mistakes and finding a way to correct course, the next generation feels like they have no future of their own, just the consaquences of their predecessor's bad choices to deal with and you can feel it on today's productions.
Preach why I rarely watch new anime no fresh ideas and it's all tropes or fan service

What about Devilman Crybaby? But I mean, teenagers watch these kinds of things, so I have no idea why they'd stop creating them. I'm a teenager (17 exactly), and I generally dislike action shōnen.

I've always seen Perfect Blue as a psychological thriller instead of a horror.

“Thriller” is a sub genre of Horror.
I think thats the intention because of that scene where the group of men are making fun of how bad psychological thrillers are. It seemed like Satoshi poking fun at himself.
It's definitely a horror.
It's also horror. Horror is something meant to terrify or mess with the mind.
The thing about Rumi is that she was always living vicariously through Mima even before the career change. To her, Mima's pop career was her pop career. This fantasy of hers was an escapism from the fact that she failed her own dream career. It's like how a underachieving narcissistic parent wants to mold their child into the person they had failed to become.

It made me question who I am as well. Many of us have online accounts and sometimes we show our lives like on facebook or instagram. Ppl judge so much about who we are based on what we post. At one point we’ve all posted something that made our character “look bad” to others. And when other ppl begin to judge, there’s always a little part of us that wonders if their judgement is right. (Even if other ppl’s opinions of us are wrong) The creepy part is when other ppl’s words are so harsh that they literally mold us into who they want us to be. They make us change ourselves.
So I often question if I’m living my life the way I want to or the way others want me to.
I thought I wasn't who I really was on the inside and the reality of who I was trying to myself to become was real toxic.
It's so wild how this movie seems more relevant today than when it came out

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind was the movie that got me into anime back in the late 80s, so you're not the only anime fan past their 20s. There was a lot of quality anime from the 80s and 90s that has kind of faded into obscurity a bit, and this is one of them. Enjoy your viewing. Much respect.
I remember seeing this on VHS as well. Also they advertisement on the box. I rented this from blockbuster.

Freakiest horror film I’ve seen. And I think it’s a perfect representation of our world today. The lines between reality and the online world are becoming blurred. Like what happened in the film.

Shinreigari is really good psychological anime because it actually talks about real psychology and they use medical terms. Kind of like how monster and shiki both use actual medical terms because they are both doctors in those anime. You could probably pass an exam at school after watching those anime haha

Ok but what if... the True Mima is the one in the mental facility but Rumi sees her as Rumi. It is Rumi, who's taken on more of Mima's appearance who sits in the car, looking into the mirror, saying I am the real Mima. That smile just freaks me out and Kon's work always plays tricks with the mind as he questioned what is reality in most of the film.

No yea mima never got her happy ending there’s so much evidence that backs up mima being in the mental asylum and not rumi. I just don’t understand how she got into the mental asylum im still confused on that
In Japanese, the last line is given by Rumi's voice actor.
That is heavily implied. In fact, that's the twist ending. Of course, if you watch the dub version you'll never know that. In typical American ham-fisted fashion, they destroy the ending by giving the final line to the wrong character. In the dub version, apparently they have Mima's voice actress say the final line. In the REAL version the line is delivered by Rumi's seiyuu.
@@momokomiyafuji396 I don't think it's "heavily implied". The doctor mentions that the patient is Rumi, and the nurses talk about how the visitor looks like Mima. So the latter can't be Rumi and the former can't be Mima.
Ironically... I just bought this last night lol. I love this film so much along with all of Satoshi Kon's other work.

There is one thing that throws a wrench into the plot, in the original Japanese dub that last line is spoken by Rumi's VA. Though it is spoken by Mima's VA in the English dub, which can completely change the film.

@@zultsetsegzulaa6292 I dont think there ever was an official reason. It can be a bit hard to notice, since they do sound a bit similar. So maybe they didn't notice, thought it wasnt important, or maybe didn't want to confuse the audience? Its probably not the last, since the dubbers would have to realize how fucking confusing the movie is meant to be.

I like when anime actually has a muted feeling of psychological discomfort. I felt the same way when I watched Serial Experiments Lain.
I haven't watched this movie yet, but I've heard so much about it. Many say that it's Satoshi Kon's best work, in spite of being his earliest. Definitely excited to see it.
Everything Kon made is gold. He was phenomenal.
Literally watched Perfect Blue for the first time this week it reminded me a lot of another film that I love Black Swan. I love watching films where the protagonist spirals out of control. It's a masterpiece #RIPSatoshiKon

I remember hearing that the director of Black Swan brought the rights of Perfect Blue so he could use the bathroom scene in Black Swan and he said he's gonna remake it, but I have a feeling that it's gonna be not as good as Satoshi Kon's.
I think its more of a stigma towards anime in Hollywood. It's sad really.

Satoshi Kon was a genius. I feel like there's somewhat of a revival of his films going on right now, more and more people seem to be getting into them.
I got into his films when he was still alive, yes I am being THAT guy right now, but goddammit I wish he had more fan when he was alive, perhaps he'd still be alive right now as a result.

This anime movie is in my top 3 of all time. I can remember seeing this movie for the first time I was so shocked on how good this movie is.
This makes me think how important it is to talk with one self, the world, society and friends and even the person you can love or trust more Can make you doubt or transform you with a manipulation form maybe with a purpose or maybe not but it’s just so important to know who you are by being fine with what you think, do or feel.
sometime it is better to ignore your need and just focus on making money... you can rest when you had noney to ignore the world since your mind stillt here... as long as you know your routine...

I find it saddening that you didn't mention the last line of the movie - the last line is delivered by RUMI's voice actress and not Mima's. Saying "I am the real mima"

I felt like I was having this experience not just watching someone having it.
Perfect Blue was the reason why I took importance of my anime taste, it's just phenomenal and amazing movie weave with top class cinematography.
Perfect Blue is an absolute masterpiece. It's like watching an out of body experience the whole time, one of the most disturbing things I've seen outside Berserk.
First time I watched perfect blue, I thought it was about duality. I thought mima was fighting with her other self, and being scared that her other self is gonna take over.
I've just watched this film for the first time and I'd give it the honour of 'best film I'll never watch again' - a title I'd previously only given to Grave of the Fireflies.
I think that having no idea what was going on, descending into madness and coming out the other side with Mima is magnificent and essential for your viewing experience. 👏👏
Every other Satoshi Kon film just got bumped to the top of my watch list. 😊
I feel like it’s less about the fear of oneself and more about the fear to never be able to distance yourself from previous life decisions or expectations.
Perfect Blue is brilliant and, after you watch the film, the cheery pop song the group performs takes on a new unsettling feeling.
I CANT BELIEVE THAT WAS HIS DEBUT WHAT A BANGER WAY TO START OFF YOUR CAREER
It's pretty profound what this anime from 1997 says about humanity and it's still incredibly relevant decades later. I went into watching this without knowing anything about it and not having seen many anime films aside from Studio Ghibli stuff and a few handful of others. It makes you think about identity/identities, the role of fame, peer pressure, self pressure, self care, trauma, isolation, and so much more. In this culture today everyone seems to be chasing internet fame and so many are isolated along the way and many are pursuing it for the wrong reasons. Many who achieve it usually say it's not what they thought it would be and their problems are still there yet the pursuit was there in the 90s and goes back to the oldest civilizations. I thought it was especially relevant and ahead of it's time with the Mac computer and how it really nailed the internet in it's early stages. On top of it all the artwork and screenplay was fantastic from the use of colors to the cuts in the edit; it all added up to create a beautiful yet psychological, thought provoking, thriller. I think that old anime aesthetic and color pallet made it feel strangely comforting tickling that nostalgia button in my brain while it also felt so relevant to culture that if it had been made in the present day it would be just as relevant. Lastly I think it really shows the development to the art how well they fleshed out not just the characters but rather the roles of the characters. There are many characters in the film but it primarily revolves around one with many more characters playing roles but not having too much development. I was impressed with the knowledge of how talent agencies operate and the awareness of how pop stars and actors are portrayed in the media. How they were using tactics back then such as taking an innocent young pop star and making her do a scene that betrayed her image. The same tricks are being used today and often when I see a crazy story about someone famous today I just remember it's because it gets attention. In the film they even had the characters in the world recognize what the media was doing and it's still happening all the time in real life today. I could ramble on but I'll just say a very well done anime that was worth the watch and one I imagine I'll revisit down the road.
Great choice. This was one of the first adult anime’s I was introduced to in my teens and made such a huge impact on the psychological genre.

My take on the end scene is sooo different! It feels like the writer was telling me that mima knew alot of what was actually happening and may even have a part to play in this whole mess. It almost feels like she wanted her agent to be in the mental ward or was at least happy she was there. Your take is very optimistic in comparison. But I agree with the rest of your video. You even helped me clear up some confusion on my end.

this film messed me up, i was real young when i first watched it and boy was i confused as heck, thank you for covering it!!
Same, I randomly rented it one day and it confused me, and a little later I rented Millennium Actress, then saw Paranoia Agent on Adult Swim and realized that they shared the same director.
Wouldn't call this movie a horror. It's a psychological thriller film IMO.
But it is one of the finest things ever to be done in anime and for many critics, showed just how far anime can push the boundaries. We always think of animated stuff as not being serious and yet this movie demands to be taken seriously and it was. It was brilliant.

For the record, it was by watching this movie that I was able to both understand and appreciate the Brittany Spears "meltdown" and see if for what it actually was. It's hard not to see it. I can only imagine how deep into her own hole of loathing at the company figure she embodied she had to have been and feel horrible at the abuse we demand from our idols to entertain ourselves to death.

Horror itself is a reflection of fear, unsettled, and uneasy. Body horror, psychological, typical haunted horror. If done right, could scare generations. Perfect Blue is a masterpiece at making you uneasy, sometimes making you unsettled by its content, but it’s down right straight forward, and realistic in how the world actually is. The fear of yourself makes you feel like a monster, of what you are capable of, and who you are as a person. Great job Satoshi Kon!

The 80s and 90s anime have so much humanity, originality, deep social observations and warnings to ourselves...and just talented hand artists ... we've definitely lost a lot of that through constant reliability of machines and cgi short cuts.....some things have to be made by hand.

This movie was based on a book of the same name. That Satoshi, did not read and did his own thing.
Which I'm glad, because the book was pretty wild with it's campy-ness and over the top violence. Plus book Mima was a stereotypical Mary Sue that was perfect in literally every way and everyone loved and respected her.

I've actually seen this movie multiple times since I was a teenager and it really gets better every time the last time I saw it I actually had the pleasure of seeing it on the big screen and it was utterly amazing I didn't think the movie could get any better but seeing it as intended in a proper movie theater was truly the best I think everyone should watch this not just cause it is good cinema but it also asks a ton of good questions about who we are as human beings and why it is that we do things which in my mind is great sometimes we need media to provoke such questions since too much of society seems to want to stop us from asking such things

Before even watching this, as my 2nd favorite movie of all time, I know this’ll be good
I liked that in the end Mima says I'm real but we see the mirror reflection of Mima saying it.
I have a totally different interpretation of this movie. I feel that "virtual" Mima is a supernatural manifestation that acts independently from others. In the end I don't think Rumi has an alter ego more than it is that she is possessed by this virtual manifestation. If there was someone else that truly loved pop idol Mima then that person too could potentially become possessed by virtual Mima. Once Memania was gone and Rumi incarcerated there was no one left for the spirit to possess, leaving it trapped in Rumi forever.
It is the digital archetype fed by Mima, Rumi, Memania and the fans. Virtual is a pattern in the Metaphysical that those people are trying to make physical.
@@Fragmentsinfractals488 yes, they even elude to it in the movie itself when they speak of an alter ego manifesting in the real world on Double Bind. I never got how people just assume by the end of the movie that it was Rumi all along. It wasn't. I think the person who killed the photographer was Mima herself being possessed by Virtual Mima at the time, which is why the bloody clothes were in her own closet.
@@Gunsight-One The concept of idol is important here. Idols are objects of worship. Virtual Mima is a being from the internet created to "be on stage". Notice how she is always in the light, even in the darkness. So by being worn by her, it makes you an idol. It also make Mima's physical fans want you, which is why Rumi wants to be her so badly.
@@Fragmentsinfractals488 That is what is so great about this anime is that there are so many layers and interpretations that anyone can walk away with a completely different outlook on the movie. It's a shame because anime has actually taken a few steps backward when it comes to what an anime can be. Virtual Mima, and the film as a whole, is a scathing critique of the whole Japanese Idol scene. Westerners might not quite understand what a phenomenon the singing idol is in Japan. From the idols of Macross to virtual Idols like Hatsune Miku it is pervasive in anime and the culture in general. America has its pop idols as well of course but it's a different beast in the west.
You can interpret it as being an allegory for the Vietnam war if you like, doesn't mean you're right.

I personally thought the ending was a bit more ambiguous, something closer to the denouement of Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho." Another interpretation could be that Mima had to face and incorporate her Jungian "Shadow." The colors red and blue also seem to be major clues, I'm guessing they refer to the "Red Oni/Blue Oni" myth in Japan.

Oh wow I just watched Perfect Blue after years of meaning to a couple of nights ago.
Cool video about one of the best anime movies from my formative teen years in the 90s. Definitely appropriate for Halloween too as this could be labeled in the horror genre. Not monsters and blood horror, but psychological horror and very well done at that. If anyone reading this hasn't seen this yet, do yourself a favor and watch it. It's quite good.
