i've listened to sabaton for years... and have listened to this song, idk how many times... and i love learning about the railroad and i basically listen to steam trains to help me sleep at night... how have i never noticed that... all i get is goose bumps now hearing that base line...
Sabaton: *writes very negative lyric describing the Holocaust and depicts Hitler as a literal demon* Some people: "Sabaton glorifies the Nazi" ???? Are they okay?
@@peterzingler6221 What are you talking about? It is worrying to see all those Corona-deniers and Nazis protest and the police doing nothing sure, but I wouldn't compare it to 1933.
This song works because it holds nothing back. Nothing about this event was redeemable. Not even the little bright moments of heroism from prisoners in the camps or the amazing stories of survival. It was an atrocity founded on lies and blame, culminating in mass murder and torture. Freedom burns, dreams fade away, and all hope turns to dust. Millions lost to the world. I appreciate that the imagery in the song doesn't dig into shock value, too. That seems to happen a lot in metal, where something serious and awful must be met with shock and horror. But nothing can really describe what they're singing about. All it can do is remark on the shame of it and scold the events for even happening. Because if we don't prevent these things from happening, that's all we're left with. Shaking our heads, crying, and at a loss for how to even begin to describe what's happened.
One of my most favorite pieces of music. Calling this a song isn't correct as it's more than that. It's a tribute. It's a remembrance. It's a story. It's a warning. You guys do a good job, making this and showing it to the world. Respectful, yet haunting. Daring without dangerous. Keep doing what you are doing Sabaton. The worst thing isn't telling this story. The worst thing is forgetting this story.
The worst part is that it still rings true to this day. As democracy crumbles freedoms are slowly taken away which leads to hate and anger. Which will lead to bloodshed and death.
I always considered this one of Sabaton's best songs ever. It has a great melancholic while still powerful melody, but the topic is standing out even more. No heroism, just pure suffering and death.
It stands out to me. It’s still power metal, but less... loud and over-the-top Sabaton we all know and love like in Ghost Division or Fields of Verdun, which fits the lyrical content and the subject of it very well
I had a buddy call this song Pro-nazi and he kept going on about this song being like that, i looked at him and said, "Shut up, its a remembrance." Now my mate thinks im a nazi.
I genuinely cannot explain how much I love this band. I never thought I would be into history, but all of sudden I heard of this band recently from a buddy. The last few months have been me listening to these guys alone. They truly put the other bands I used to listen to...to absolute shame. Keep up the amazing work guys.
Goosebumps Every Single Time Truly a representation of sabaton showing respect for the subject matter and that is why I believe this is their best work

This is probably not the best place to say this, because of relevancy. I consider myself to be a huge fan of history, and that's why I like Sabaton. You guys deliver thrilling satisfying tunes, while also delivering informational history segments. Before this year, I had known of the holocaust and what happened during it, but I had never looked into it (I prefer to have my research guided in some way, it's best if my teachers form the strategy, though I will If I have to). Recently, I had to do a biography from the perspective of someone specific who displayed moral courage by rescuing Jews. After creating it and presenting it to the grade, and hearing other presentations, I find this song. This was a really deep piece, and I applaud you for doing such a good job, it was very emotional. I don't know why I decided to post this, but I felt like I was obligated in some way, thank you so much. I look forward for your next tour in New England. Stay safe.

Sabaton: Makes a song entirely about the Holocaust. German media: I sleep Rammstein: Drops a teaser involving the Holocaust. German media: *_R E A L S H I T_*
Difference is, Rammstein used that specific part of their video about german history as a whole to promote it, obviously trying to get attention for something so dark yet known
I heard people call this song distasteful for making a frankly vibing rock song out of mankind's most horrific atrocity, but i honestly think it is really well done. There are no heroes here, or glory, like in Sabaton's other work - just pure harsh reality. The lyrics never touch on the exact nature of the atrocities, but it only makes it scarier. The animation looks sloppy, like it was made with cutouts with no respect for perspective or shadows - but if anything this only adds to the effect. There are many little details i appreciate - the signs show historical facts when no lyrics are present, "arbeit macht frei" on the gate. The setting is one of classic horror, with a full moon at night and ravens flying over distorted humans. Despite everything in the video being highly surreal and almost supernatural the lyrics are weirdly humanizing - no hate comes out of nowhere, and this song is a warning to what happens when you let that hate go to its logical extreme. As a jew who has seen my fair share of traumatizing and melancholic songs about the Holocaust this one stands out as being a _metal_ song that still manages to capture the sheer horror of what happened there in a way that is both vague and direct. I hope you had fun reading through my overanalyzation of a Sabaton song about the _Holocaust_ in the middle of the night when i really should be sleeping.
It's not man kinds most horrific atrocity. It's definitely up there. I want a song about what the Belgians did to the Congo. Or what the Brits did to india.

That’s also probably why before the lyrics first kick in, around their logo is a bunch of cracked glass since Kristallnacht was the “Night of Broken Glass”

See the song as what it is. A badass way to tell history, the good and the bad. No need to not enjoy the music though, if you already took the leasson from it to heart.
Imho this song is a a sad and powerful tale about a terrible past that should never be forgotten. So when you are headbanging, singing aloud and dance, you are basically declaring "I will not forget! I will always be against this! This should never be again!". As if you are a historian, telling people about this horror and becoming very emotional and gesturing like crazy. Something like that. Also imho it is an addressing to all the victims - "We remember how it happened, we remember you, we sing and headbang to your honor and memory!". Something like that. Listening 4th time atm.
When I saw them live during their The last tour. They did a unplugged version of this song. It sent chills down the spines of all of us. It made the lyrics even more powerful. Kristallnacht was 82 years ago today. May the memories of our ancestors be a memory and may we never forget the horrors that befell our people. Say with me, Never Again
As a Jew, I cannot thank you enough for writing this song. So many narratives of World War II like to minimize the horrors of the Holocaust and yet in under five minutes you get out all of the salient points and condemn it as the catastrophe that it was. You do not know how much this means to me that not only were you able to do this in such a powerful and hauntingly beautiful song. Toda raba.
We have to remember that later they started burning also polish people as they had the second highest death count during the holocaust excluding polish jews.
I hope not. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” (George Santayana) Unfortunate that we're starting to see similar scenarios unfold live and in colour, right now.
Most people have forgotten/was never taught about what the nazis did in detail and only know "big gas room genocide". Which is really scary because they cant see the similarities between "Jew owned" and "black owned" marking business among other scary similarities
Thing is: While the Jews as a whole and the genocide certainly weren't forgotten, the other groups that were murdered in the holocaust are barely talked about (which kind of makes sense because if I remember correctly Jews and descendants of Jews were the vast majority, but still ain't that great), but apart from a few prominent victims the individuals who got gassed, shot, mistreated or worked to death aren't remembered as the people they were, and instead only as a blank mass of human "resources" burnt in that hellfire, and even the more prominent victims will probably fade from the memory of the living sooner or later. That is obviously something that happens with every dead person, but in my mind it still makes the whole thing seem much more harmless when you can't think of the people that died in any way other than a number on a piece of paper (or a screen).
@@toxicwaste159 admittedly I'm a sociopath, (I'm not just saying this to be edgy) and I find it hard to view them as more than numbers. I am aware they were "living people" as you put it but I just can't make an "emotional" connection to that...
@@ThePigeon5734 It's understandable. There's a saying that one death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic. It's horrible, but it's true that it's hard to wrap your head around a number that big and understand that each and every one of those statistics is a human life. That's why images like the shoes or the wedding rings are so powerful. It helps to humanize what might otherwise be just a number.

Sabaton, you have helped me learn about history, including the horrible parts, and for the uncensored look back, I must thank you.

Sabaton, thank you for this video. My grandmother (our matriarch) passed away about 6 weeks ago at the age of ninety. I am her eldest grandchild of her 47 grand kids. this has such a different tone than most Sabaton songs, and I think that's really fitting. Most Sabaton songs are about heroic last stands or legendary historical figures, things where there's some aspect of something positive and good. @@RasEli03 the people you heard that from were tourist right? cause that era is pretty much the main focus in history lessons i would guess that around 60% of the time that era is the topic (back then in shool it felt more like 90%) and a lot of times it includes a trip to concentration camp which will leave you with a strange feeling you can not describe (this varies from one to another federal state a bit, but not that much)
@@RasEli03 I am currently in 9th grade in Germany, (and really good and interested in History, that's how i found sabaton) and this year we only learn about the years 1923 - 1945 in Germany. the song, this whole thing shouldnt be forgotten it can be put away for the moment but we will never forrget it
This song works because it holds nothing back.

Nazi's of WWII: Your people will be forgotten.
Sabaton: Wanna bet?
That's why images like the shoes or the wedding rings are so powerful. It helps to humanize what might otherwise be just a number.

A metal song does not need to be heavy to be... heavy.
Many criticise Sabaton for not being heavy metal enough. Some critics and fans call it heavy metal for children.
Yet they have many sad and heavy songs: En livstid i krig (lifetime of war), Cliffs of Galilopi, The final solution, the price of a mile, in the name of God, angels calling, hearts of iron, the great war, purple hearts and who knows which songs ive missed.
I also think that they are only band with song like "in the name of God" that literally criticises terrorist as nothing more ,but cowardly cockroaches who dont deserve to be called gods warriors.

Sabaton, thank you for this video. My grandmother (our matriarch) passed away about 6 weeks ago at the age of ninety.
I am her eldest grandchild of her 47 grand kids. She was the only survivor of her family in Czechoslovakia. She stayed in refugee camps, then went to what is now Israel and started all over again. She married and had 13 children, living on a farm called Ben Shemen.
She had a tough life, and her depression and sorrow left its mark on her kids, including my mom, her 2nd born, but we moved ahead, wearing her scars.
I have always loved this song, but seeing the video, with the Star of David and the Sabaton logo brought me chills and filled me with Hope. I personally dedicate this comment to you, savta (grandma).
