During the Attack the 77th reached their designated position but did not know that the forces on both their left and right flank had been halted miles back. Fearing that losing the 77ths position would result in a devastating counter attack and prolong the war several years led to the men at HQ (the entirety of the 77th being at the front) to lie to the 77th and tell them that both flanks had been secured. By the time Major Whittlesey, commander of the 77th, had found out the truth, they had been cut off and surrounded by German troops. with no support(even being hit by their own artillery in an attempt by friendly forces to help them, only being stopped when a pigeon bearing the message "WE ARE ALONG THE ROAD PARALELL 276.4. Out of 550 men. 197 were killed, and roughly 150 were missing or captured by the time reinforcements were able to make it to them (due to the sheer amount of troops the Germans were diverting from other sections of the line to push them back).

BACKSTORY: On October 2nd, 1918, The United States 77th Battalion comprised mainly of young men who grew up on the streets of New York, many impoverished and used to fighting for food and survival were sent into the Argonne forest to break the German lines as part of the "Hundred Days Offensive" also called the "Meuse-Argonne Offensive". For their part, the young men were told by General Robert Alexander - "It is again impressed upon every officer and man of this command that ground once captured must under no circumstances be given up in the absence of direct, positive, and formal orders to do so emanating from these headquarters. Troops occupying ground must be supported against counterattack and all gains held. It is a favorite trick of the Boche to spread confusion...by calling out "retire" or "fall back." If, in action, any such command is heard officers and men may be sure that it is given by the enemy. Whoever gives such a command is a traitor and it is the duty of any officer or man who is loyal to his country and who hears such an order given to shoot the offender upon the spot. "WE ARE NOT GOING BACK BUT FORWARD!"" - When the french that should have been supporting their flank were stopped, they were trapped in the middle of sighted-in territory, surrounded by the enemy, and told not to retreat upon pain of death. So they did not. They fought starvation, with very low supplies, and little relief in sight. Barbed wire covered an incredible amount of the forest, in rivers and streams, sometimes as tall as a man. The 77th fortified a hill they called the "pocket" and with nearly 500 men tried to hold fast and reestablish contact with their allies to no success. 2 carrier pigeons became the only means of communication until they were lost. Until October 8th they held, taking heavy casualties, but fighting so determined that the Germans could not focus on the counter-initiative that forced the French and American flanks back. Major Charles White Whittlesey received back one captured eighteen year old American with a message "the suffering of your wounded men can be heard over here in German lines, and we are appealing to your humane sentiments to stop....please treat (the messenger) as an honorable man. He is quite a soldier. We envy you." No response was given. They had their orders. Of the 554 soldiers of the Battalion, less than 200 were still whole to be rescued. They were relived of duty, promoted, treated, and/ or shipped home. Their efforts allowed the Allies to punch through the German lines, and succeed.

smilly456 it sounds kinda funny But in memory of the fallen in the battle of the Argonne, and especially of the lost battalion,I will better shut up because these people suffered a lot and they deserve respect
The bird that Saved the AEF and gained a Medal. The poor bird was shot down once and lost sight in one eye, was shot through the breast and her right foot was hanging by a tendon, that bird suffered as much as the soldiers and yet she went on to deliver that message for her battalion. A hero just like the men who held in the Argonne to help the British and French forces advance.
US doctrine can best be described as "They have us surrounded..... Those poor bastards." Say what u want about the USA one of our good qualities (hilariously enough) is we are stubborn.
Like the final mission would have epic music in the background while charging to the final trenches with your men running behind you, going as fast as they can.
‘The Lost Battalion’ is the name given to nine companies of the United States’ 77th Division during the battle of the Argonne in 1918. Even though these 550-575 brave men were completely surrounded by the German Army and subjected to friendly artillery fire, they kept on fighting for a week until they were relieved. Of the over 500-plus soldiers who entered the Argonne Forest, only 194 walked out unscathed. The rest were killed, missing, captured, or wounded.
"Liberty Division standing strong!" Just tugs at my heart strings, that defiance in the wake of a hopeless situation just gets me, I honestly say I tear up a little.
This comment has been posted on the 11 of November, 2018, at 8:42 GMT, in honour of the ones who fell during The Great War. Let their souls rest in peace, no matter their nationality. They were all soldiers who fought for their country. It does not matter now from which side were they, for they lie in the ground side by side. Death claims all, no matter where you are coming from. May their souls forever be remembered, for they had shaped the world we live in today.

" I remember the Argonne, 1918. The sounds of that battle still haunt me to this day. Machinegun fire from enemy lines. The sickening sound of a bayonet tearing through human flesh. The soldier next to me firing his sidearm in desperation. All these sounds still echo in my mind, and as conducted by Death himself it all comes together as music. A rythm of death. A symphony of war" Diary of an unknown soldier
@Márcio Oliveira did you see it said a unknown soldiers diary that means that that man that wrote that should be dead but the commenter was saying from that diary
Nothing but respect for those men. They went through HELL. They could've surrendered. They could've laid their weapons down and gave up, got out of their situation. But you know what? They DIDN'T. These men hung in there and kept fighting until the bitter end. Not only that, but they were such a thorn in the enemy's side that help came in the form of an allied attack on a distracted force, which gave them just enough punch to break through the front line. These men, whether they fell in battle or passed after the war, will always live on in my mind as heroes. As they rightly deserve.
I would suggest that '...will always live on in my mind as heroes.' should read '...will always live on in our minds as heroes.' There are very few real heroes left in this world today, they are all being forgotten. I say, Thank You Sabaton for keeping their memories alive.

My Grandfather fought in this battle. It took a long time for his involvement to be proven, the records are shabby, much lost in a fire. Robert Laplander, the #1 historian to this battle, found the proof for me, and now my grandfather is listed in his published photo album book "Faces of the Lost Battalion". I am so thankful to Sabaton for this wonderful song, that always brings tears to my eyes.
Listening to this song on the 100th Anniversary of the end of WW1 brings tears to my eyes. Let us never forget all who lost their lives in this world-changing conflict. And normally you’d say also to honor the living, but as this song says, they Argonne.
It's just a Lyrical Video. It has nothing to do with the rest of the song. Amon Amarth has done the same thing. th-cam.com/video/LpZiuh0MlpM/w-d-xo.html
Pretty much the same in Europe, in fact it's getting lamer and lamer in France, they tend to insist on negative aspects of our history. Before, Louis XIV had over 100 pages of lessons in a Secondary School history book. Now it's four pages explaining how he got the Kingdom broke. How are children supposed to feel proud of our country history. I don't really know about USA, but I guess it's generally American-centered, that would be the reason why it doesn't go back to medieval times. PS: By the way, I only knew the name of the 30 years war before listening "A Lifetime of War" ;) Oh, and Europa Universalis 4 brought me to Sabaton.

My Grandfather (yes, Grandfather, not Great Grandfather), was in the lost battalion. He was one of the surviving wounded. Shot in the leg, took shrapnel in one of his arms, and had part of his mustache shot off. Pvt. J C Phelps. Company K, 307th Infantry. He received his purple heart 58 years late.
I first discovered these guys in 2013 because they were opening for Iron Maiden. We got there during the middle of the set. When we got to their seats I was blown away from how badass they were. The next day I put on Primo Victoria and fell in love. I recently just saw them again a few months ago at Ozzfest Meets Knotfest, this time being a fan and knowing their songs. They kicked ass. I looked around during Sparta and almost everyone had their fist up. It was beautiful.
Sabaton on Memorial day is great. Raise one for those who have fallen and those who returned home. Pray our sons and daughters never need to face such loss.

maybe, my new video, which I am editing right now and will be released in a few hours, already has a comment on the division designer and historical accuracy and also a funny reference.
What do you think about the fact they removed spies all together? That the AI is utter rubbish? That the division designer is stupidly simplified? And that you can't make planes take place in specific battles? And of course a whole bunch of other shit decisions by paradox.
well, the spy system was always quite lacking. I assume they will figure out a proper system and add it with a patch/dlc as they do with EU IV all the time. I played HOI 1 early on, you could basically declare war on everyone as Italy and the Allies didn't care... untitl it was patched later on. The AI is so far is fine, I am not really happy with the front system too, because 4 armies on the same front and they all will put divisions on the same spot and leave others, also the front should be able to be put up without an enemy border. The garrison mission also fails in preventing invasions. The air force, well, the losses are WAY TOO HIGH, about the battles, not enough experience, but the allocation system is extremely counter-intuitive. I think the direction is the correct one, I didn't like HOI3 at first but with Black Ice I loved it, the problem is HOI 4 is in the complete other direction, hence it feels way more off. But sometimes it felt like a little slaugtherfest similar to a War Thunder furball in arcade. Hence, I am not really happy, but it is way too early to tell.

To the top with you!

The soldier next to me firing his sidearm in desperation. All these sounds still echo in my mind, and as conducted by Death himself it all comes together as music. A rythm of death. A symphony of war"

Yea there was that kid who fucking kept camping in the corner at Duff
Diverted an entire German division and weakened enemy lines. Absolute badasses.

I've learned more history from Sabaton than i have in school. Thanks American school system!
Fellow American, I can confirm.
Its the same here in Australia.
PS: By the way, I only knew the name of the 30 years war before listening "A Lifetime of War" ;)
Oh, and Europa Universalis 4 brought me to Sabaton.
yup
RayleihJ in america, its centered around the building of the country. It barely touches on the wars. If it does, its about some major plan that won us the war, or just the general outcome of it. We're barely given names or specifics like I get from these guys

Hearts of Iron IV released on Monday and now (Friday) this, well, June 2016 for sure kicks ass!
not as much as August will :P
Will you made series from HOI IV?
maybe, my new video, which I am editing right now and will be released in a few hours, already has a comment on the division designer and historical accuracy and also a funny reference.

They would never comply
They would rather die
Broke through the blockade
They were finally saved
Friendly fire munitions running low
The supplies they were dropped upon their foe
1918 the war still rages on
The battalion still trapped in the Argonne
Chose not to surrender
They chose victory or defeat
Fallen brothers resting by their feet
Far from their land
As they made their stand
A disregarded demand
It's surrender or die
And the stakes are high
They live or they die
There's no time for good bye
Weapon in hand as they made their stand
Still disregarding demand
They would never comply
They would rather die
Broke through the blockade
They were finally saved
Far from their land
As they made their stand
A disregarded demand
It's surrender or die
And the stakes are high
Live or die who can tell
There's no good bye
With a weapon in hand
As they made their stand
Still disregarding demand
They would never comply
They would rather die
They stood strong and
The legend still lives on
Suffered heavy losses
Through the Great War they stood strong
But the memory of the fallen still lives on
Far from their land
As they made their stand
A disregarded demand
It's surrender or die
And the stakes are high
They live and they die
There's no time for good bye
Weapon in hand as they made their stand
Still disregarding demand
They would never comply
They would rather die
Broke through the blockade
They were finally saved
What's the point of commenting rhe lyrics on video that literally has the lyrics in it
Now somebody just needs to put the lyrics in this comment. So we end up with Lyrics in a Comment that’s a comment with lyrics in it on a lyric video.
@@iandipuccio9426 because, it is good habit and in case you wanna memorize it more easily
What I like about Sabaton is that not only is their music catchy, their songs are also educational teaching you about the World Wars.
Old English teachers grandfather was a part of them. Teach didn't say much but he mentioned he had something wrong with his foot, mentioned how bad it was, and that he made it home.
Thought you meant he was a part of Sabaton. Lol.
Nine-Toed Sloth he was a part of the lost battalion
Sadly that is probably true
+pred6 How fucking old is your teacher? I call bullshit. r/thathappened
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man My grandfather was born right before WWI and I’m young, if it’s an English teachers it is entirely plausible, just depends on the age of your parents.
*"1918, the Great War rages on"*
*shows T-34 and soviet tank destroyers*
also panther, valentines bruh
Don't forget the Tiger 2
I think they are models from any of the Men of War games.
jajaja true

> "1918"
> SU-85, Tiger II, Pak 36, PPSh, Panzerfausts, etc. present in the Video.

And mp-40, isu-152
@@palm..296 ISU-152? You mean the "City Deleter"?
Are you tryna argue with sabaton
They should get promoted by DICE for a BF1 DLC advertisement. Would break the internet.
OH HELL YEAH
Kyle Posey It's gonna be fucking epic dude
They are gonna be really famous
Kyle Posey They've got hoi4 already
Actually the Argonne Forrest map is actually something that happened. They say it was to represent the first phase of the battle.
They are already REALLY famous in Europe. It's mostly USA that don't know of their existance
This is the first song i heard from Sabaton and right now, 4~ years later I'm a gigantic fan of them. Thanks for introducing me to them Dad! Love you
My great-grandpa Doc was in the lost battalion as a medic and survived. Anyone else have a grandpa that was in the lost battalion?
Great uncle died there, sorta I guess
You should probably talk to some of the other guys in this comments section; they commented after you- I think one had a great-grandfather called Kaufman?
"They were finally saved" by a pigeon. "Dear Friend" is right.
meanwhile my HOI4 divisions: "OuR oRGaNizaTioN Is lOSt wE MUst sUrReNDEr"
I swear, organization is going to be the death of most my divisions in hearts or iron
Never happens to me, even if my poor bastards have been stuck surrounded for like a month
Then again I rely upon radio support
God this is true
What realistically happened in like 90% of encirclements
Playing battlefield 1, this song came on while I was playing the Argonne forest map, was so funny and epic
Wolf Heart I feel this when playing with my friends and I wind up at a flag alone
Wolf Heart quite fitting
That one time when you end up with only your squad and the enemy army is coming straight for you.
That is awesome.
Wolf Heart Everytime I'm on that map I think about this song
"Chose not to surrender, they chose victory or defeat / fallen brothers resting by their feet" - this lines make me want to cry
