    Put this side by side w the Glenmo 14 Port and the Glendronach comes off as very sour, especially on the nose. I think the Glenmo 14 is much more enjoyable. This one is too sweet and sour for me. It’s good, but I just wish I didn’t get all that sour on the nose.

    I get alot of red fruits with this one. Cherry strawberry and rasberry with cherry pipe tobacco with some vanilla and cream are the basic notes. I do like it alot but im not going back to buy another bottle. If you have a Total Wine you should be able to get it there.

    This is one I'd be keen on. Haven't really tried much Port casks, but as you say, if you're going to try one, Glendronach is one I'd fairly trust!

    How does this compare to the Quinta Ruban (12 or 14)? I have never had a port + sherry double finish. I drink port, so the first time I smelled QR, I was like, "hello ruby port!" on the nose and the palate.

    I passed on this one. I just think I like their sherry matured stuff better. The 15yr port was ok but nowhere near as good as the Revival, Allardice, or Parliament. They've put out some single cask port bottlings but I haven't tried any yet. Cheers fellas

    I also got a bottle of this @ Total Wine in Texas, may be a store exclusive. I feel they left it in Port WAY too long. The flavors are busy and sour to me. It got better as it aired but I'm not a wine guy so...I liked the Sherry & Port in Glenfiddich Project XX better.

  • @jeremyburns7321
    @jeremyburns7321 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One thing that I tend to disagree with you guys, is why you mark down your scores due to it not holding up to water. When a whisky is presented at a lower ABV, if you are thinking of say a score of 3 neat and then give it 2.5 after adding water, that is telling you that you shouldn't be adding water, it is not as if it is mandatory to add water.
    At higher ABV's the advantage of adding water is to allow the nose and palate to get beyond the alcohol, and let the whisky fully open up all it has to offer.
    This is obviously subjective and not a criticism.

    • @Scotch4Dummies
      @Scotch4Dummies  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jeremy! Many thanks for the comment and your opinion and I mean that in sincerity as furthering the conversation benefits everyone! Now, responding is a bit tricky for me as I'm (actually all four of us now) are high ABV guys! That being said we do rate our scotch reviews combining both neat and water perceptions. I agree with your take on what the scotch is "telling" me if it is worse with water, but that's not my point in reviewing it, my point is discovering that to relay in the review! We're taking into consideration both ways for different folks. Truthfully, in whisky competitions they water the whisky down to below 30%. I get it that it's not "mandatory" to add water, but in an effort to keep every review consistent we have not changed our process. Some have beaten us up for not prepouring or reviewing a neck pour. But, we stick to it in the name of keeping it the same for every whisky! I totally get everything you're saying, having done these reviews for so long I can honestly say that even if I'd rather have a particular scotch neat doesn't mean it got worse with water. Many change and show complexity...some just go flat and not always the lower ABV ones. There are high ABV whiskies that fall apart with a little water...
      Anywho, you hit the nail on the head by pointing out the subjectiveness of this all and I appreciate you speaking up! Cheers, ~Mark

      @@Scotch4DummiesCheers Mark,
      I did bring it up with some trepidation, I didn't want it to come across as a criticism, which can easily be the case with the written word. It is obviously a very personal opinion, just like in most things there is not a wrong and right.
      I can fully get behind why marks can be brought up, as water opens up both the nose and palate experience, but am not a fan for marking things down as they are presented because we change their presentation by adding something to it.
      I hear you when it comes to how the master distiller waters down quite extensively for testing during their aging process, guess we can consider ourselves fortunate they are not being offered between 20 and 30% ABV!
      Keep up the excellent work!
