    Im a 16 year old Teenager yet I love your videos. I myself prefer DVDs over streaming services such as Netflix and so and its overall better. I particular love films from the golden age such as from the 1940s-1960s and that's uncommon for a Teenager! Anyways cant wait to see more on your channel. Would love to see a video of you showing your favorite movies!
    With the DVD situation, Ive recently thrown out the cases (even though its sad) and stored each of them in DVD in storage sleeves in alphabetical order. Its so much easier to find what I want and it also reduces space! Cheers.

      I know, it's crazy - I have a 36 hour box set of THE BRIDGE (Blu-ray) that takes less space than a single VHS 📼.
      And we still complain about "not nuff space"

    • @mjc0961

      What's crazy to me is that DVD is the same size disc as CD. For CD we got small cases, generally just large enough to hold the disc. That's all we really needed. But for DVDs? Nope, MAKE AN UNNCESSARILY TALL AND WIDE CASE!!! And sometimes throw on locking tabs, wouldn't want the case to open accidentally!
      DVDs, Blu-rays, 4Ks, and video games should all have just keep being sold in the slim jewel cases. Maybe change the design slightly so the hinge tabs aren't always breaking up. Otherwise I don't know why they need to be so tall, it just uses more plastic and it takes up more space on a shelf.

    • @dazjackson1972
      @dazjackson1972 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@mjc0961 Early DVD box sets were often ridiculously designed too - as if they were to be treated as "ornaments" rather than part of a filing system.
      It took some distributors years to realise that DVD needed to fit on a shelf.

    I keep my DVDs in a big binder now, as I have ripped them all on a PC I've set up as Jellyfin server. All the content I own is set up on my TV in a Netflix-like app, and me and my family have plenty to watch, and I add new stuff I find in charity shops all the time. We haven't had Nexflix or Disney plus for about a year now. Still have Bluerays on the shelves for now.

    The last time I moved, I ended up donating most of my collection. I was so tired of packing and moving so many dvds and thought streaming would always have all my favorites. I personally own about 600 Blu-rays and DVDs. Believe it or not, they take up very little space in my home. I'm a collector so the cases are important to me. I bought 2 shelving units that are specially for Blu-rays and DVDs. The units sit flat up against the wall. It comes out less than 6 inches from the wall and is about 4.5 feet long so it's perfect. I can see all my movies, all in my particular order, and takes up very little space. This set up works great for me. I could even add one more unit if I ever need and would barely notice the space it takes up

    I tried putting the DVD's in the smaller sleeves that wouldn't fit the artwork. The ones able to hold the artwork would definitely be a lot better. The problem I had besides missing the artwork which won't be an issue for you at all, Is that I missed the tactile feel of holding the old plastic case. I had the cases stored in the attic for a couple of years while i used the small sleeves & fortunately the cases survived because I put them back in their cases last year. it definitely takes more space but it made me happy. I hope it works out great for you long term. If i had ordered the big ones like you did I might have had a better experience in all honesty.

    For a number of years I used to keep all my DVD disc in CD/DVD wallets and stored the boxes at my parents' house. This was fine because I had hundreds of DVDs on hand in my cramped flat but I did really miss the artwork and when visited my parents I'd spend a lot of time just looking through the boxes taking pleasure from looking at the covers. Thankfully now I have a bit more space and I was able to build a decent size set of DVD shelfs that actually surround and frame our TV and can hold about 1200 DVDs plus bigger boxsets along the top, and I can find any DVD in a jiffy.

    I did this last year to my vast collection of thousands of DVDs. I had no room for the collection and couldn't find anything quickly. I used these sleeves and the CD sleeves you show and I've put them all into 3 Ikea dressers. In 2009, I transferred all the content from my DVDs to my PC. I then transferred that to a 1TB external hard drive, which I've kept in my bedroom draw ever since. The DVDs themselves (and there were nearly 100) were cut up with a pair of scissors and the cases were thrown away.
    I consider the plastic cases and DVDs themselves worthless. It's the content on those DVDs that's valuable. Also now, whenever I go on holiday, I can fit my entire former DVD collection on a box the size of a phone.

    I've seen a lot of people do the same or similar. Maybe I'm just a bit different but I prefer to keep the art work separate. The 100+ disc cases are cheap, keep the discs safe and are easy to flip through. The artwork fits perfect in file folders and lays flat without any creases. It's also not difficult to put them back together if I want to put a few back on the shelf.

    Good idea for saving space within your house. I would suggest keeping the empty cases in the loft if possible. Why? Well if you ever change your mind and want to put the sleeves and disks back into the cases it may be a challenge in ten or twenty years time as they no longer be manufacturing replacement cases then and if they did won’t be cheap especially with shipping.
    Without the cases shops won’t buy them if you wish to trade them in the future - they not worth anything now but that could always change in the future in the same way interest in vhs is picking up now, when years back you couldn’t give them away. But collectors are not buying tapes without the boxes unless they super rare titles.
    But if you don’t care about any future value then it doesn’t matter. 😊

    I have the luxury of 40 shelves (capacity 50 standard DVD cases each) which will hold 2000 disks in worst case scenario.
    Also saved room by prioritising slimmest available box sets for franchise movies and TV series.
    Upgrading to Blu-ray (where possible) often saves space too - as long as you're not a hoarder and hold onto the DVD.

For my single movies, I use A5 binders, a5 sleves and the plastic and fabrik sleve for the disc, the binders have letter om them, so its easier to find the movie you are looking for. The a5 sleves are a llot cheaper, and let you use binders instead, this worked better for my situation.

    Same problem with CDs, I have done much the same as you with those. Not sure I want to go that route with the DVDs and BluRays etc though, certainly not at the moment. They do, I agree, take up too much room but then again, if I could find a compression technique for books (Ant-Man, where are you ?) then I would be a lot happier. VHS tapes were even worse (clearly we need bigger house or storage space in the UK)

    I have a LOT of movies in the house. I buy transparent plastic cases and stack the DVDs in them with the title facing outwards. About 40 fit in each box (20 facing each side). The result is that when I'm looking for a particular movie, it takes 20 seconds to glance at both sides of the box, instead of five minutes to unpack the box and inspect them.

    • @JamesMurphyYT
      @JamesMurphyYT  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Also they're protected in those plastic cases. I've started putting mine in them.

  • @CaldonianDude
    @CaldonianDude 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Great video and a very inventive solution. I'm not familiar with those sleeves, and we didn't really see the end result close up, so I'm not sure how sturdy the sleeves are, and how much protection they give. The old plastic cases are bigger and heavier, and take up more space, but they are more or less bomb proof, and do offer a lot of protection for the disk. Do you feel the sleeves offer enough protection? Cheers.

      @JamesMurphyYT  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, actually, I do. Particularly in the outer box.
      It also makes the experience like flipping through LP covers in a shop.

    I have a similar problem with computer games. I use an Aluminium 512 disk storage box. Each storage sheet is double sided and has 4 disk pockets per side. I store the original outer case sleeves in another box sorted alphabetically and another box for the game manuals (again sorted alphabetically). There is an index in the roof of the box to tell me what number each disk is. I rarely look at the outer sleeves but I have them in case I ever what to look at the required system specs for the game.

    Some cases just need to be disposed of in favor of a good DVD wallet, like big TV boxed sets for example, I literally had to repurchase 2 entire seasons of CSI NY because the cases CBS uses for its entire series sets are a DVD death trap, 2 disks broken just trying to separate them from the plastic.

    You could’ve just gotten poly sheet protectors and put all the movies with artwork in a zippered 3 ring binder .. it would’ve been way cheaper and more space saving and you could pick up those almost anywhere grocery store Walmart etc
