I pre-ordered this camera and just sold my A7Rii. My question to you is about the SD card slots are they both UHS-II compatible? Also can you still run the SmallHD Focus Monitor without the dummy battery on this camera?
I'm sure we all hoped for that big 60-70mp sensor we've heard rumors about, but i'm sure they're saving that for the A9R since it will be the official flagship.. but who knows. We can hope. It won't be in my budget unfortunately but i can dream haha
Just one is UHS-II. And if SmallHD makes a dummy battery for the FZ100, then it should work
Why is only one slot UHS-II?

Thank you for answering my #1 question about play memories. I'm glad they kept the file transfer and remote trigger feature. I didn't buy the timelapse app and hope they just put a built in intervalometer in future iterations instead.

Hi Jason, thanks a lot for your great videos. I am new to Sony and i Bought the 7Riii and noticed it gets warm by usage (not doing videos at all) even when i am in menu setting. Yes for more than 15 min. Is that normal since i am new to mirrorless cameras and Sony? Appreciate your feedback.

It is really annoying that there is no Play Memory Apps in the new models. It is the same with my new RX10 IV. I love the Timelapse App, it helped me a lot. Do you think there will be probably an software update and we get it back?
Jason, do you think Sony will add the AUTO EYE AF feature to the A9? If they do I'll keep it. Right now I'm seriously thinking of ditching my A9 for the A7Riii mainly for that feature!
A7s3 with articulating screen would be the DREAM. But yeah, I don’t see that happening either. I still have an 80D for vlogging on the move, but I wish I could vlog 4K with all my nice Sony glass 😞

Hey guy good review! Would you know whether or not the fotdiox or metabones adapters will work with the A7riii? I am thinking of slowly moving over to Sony from Canon 70D but I have a Sigma 24-105mm and a Tamron 15-30mm lens with the sw150 filters....is it worth the change up?
They will work. It will also be dependent on the adapter companies to make firmware updates for the camera.

Sony is using the strategy Apple has been using for years. They release new cameras with features that have been available in other brands for years. Rate button, auto switching AF points, correctly placed video button, joystick, just to name a few. All that said, I am still excited AF about this A7RIII though :D
Yeah. I believe that's because Sony is a technology company at heart. Not a camera company. So their cameras always have the best technology. But simple things that are standard to cameras they seem to totally miss or implement poorly.

Literally just saves sooooooo much time after my photoshoots, when we are selecting the favorite images with the model on location (on the back of the LCD). Right now I am using pen and paper, then I import them to LR, then I star it. So much wasted time.

I would be curious to know what the proportion of users who go for the A7R series is, along the lines of-- photographer : videographer : mixed photo-video use (with over 40% video). I am guessing that the photographer category leads the other two out by a wide margin. If that is the case, I can understand Sony's desire to deepen the specialization divide between the A7R and A7S. Also, I can maybe understand why there is no flip-out on the A7R. But, on the A7S? That just seems like a huge oversight to omit a flip-out on their video-focused model. Maybe they'll finally implement that on their APS-C bodies. Come on, a6700!

Funny really as I wouldn't switch. I like the large body of the 1dx2. it doesn't look like a toy. Your Canon glass won't focus well on the Sony with Metabones adapter so you will need to buy Sony glass. You also have 4k 60p which the Sony doesn't have.

Also, quad vga is pretty cool. It's something that people dont think of, but the viewfinders arent always HD resolution. The A6000 was only SVGA which was 800 by 600!! And the A6300 is VGA which is 1024 by 768 (like some old school computer monitors).....so that's awesome that Sony added that.
Jason, what were you reading from and where did you get it? I assume it's official A7RIII marketing material from Sony. Will Samys have them?

Is this cam Good for vloging I understand you can vlog with rx100 and g7x and I understand this cam is for photos but Is it Good video quality ???
Yes, this camera can absolutely be used for vlogging!
OMG!. This cam is good for video? Are you nuts? You mention 2 toy cameras and then ask if this pro cam is good for video? With your knowledge, its certainly much better than you need to shoot your cat and dog videos.
I personally wish the a7r iii would've had 2 UHS-II memory card slots, or XQD and UHS-II. The other wish for the a7r iii would've been the 4K 60p.
You mentioned that you can use certain menu settings as it writes, can you tell me which ones? And can we now FINALLY review the foto, by pressing the play button, while it writes? I get that message once I shoot 5+ continuous RAW photos on my a7Rii and its annoying to not be able to review them quickly. Mainly while shooting a moving object and trying to see if it was in focus right after.
This is my Only issue with the a7Rii....

Jason Vong FINALLY!! This was really a dealbreaker for mi, and sometimes frustrating when in first dance when I needed to quickly review lighting with flash. I also preordered it but this really has me worried. To the point that the D850 is my option. Actually getting one borrowed from Nikon next week.

If I could afford it now the autofocus, higher detail and possible better low light performance than my a6300 would nail it for me over my present a6300. $8000 for the camera an 2 G Master lenses is still a bit much.
I think they can safely miss the mark for a flip out screen as long as they nail it for the next a6xxx system. Not so much of a hit to the FF user base, but if they nail it for the a6xxx they will satisfy most small / YT content creators and take a market share from the GH5 with ease.

larger battery is a big + for me.
My only concern with the A7r lll is how usable the electronic shutter is. I know it has allot more rolling shutter than the A9. But can you shoot someone walking. Or a moving model without getting distortion. I really want to know its limitations. I hope its not only good for still subjects
You sound like you know your stuff. If a cat is walking it will shoot a movie ok as long as the cat only walks very slowly. If a person is walking it will shoot them just the same.
Killing the Apps was the right decision - but killing the key features they brought to the table was not. Let's face it, the way the apps were implemented was a kludge but the features they provided were essential... Timelapse, focus stacking, and smooth reflections (which eliminates the need for ND filters) are huge time savers for pros and amateurs alike. So my suggestion is that Sony take the best and most important apps and make those native firmware features. Smooth reflections is just an expansion of the existing multi-frame NR feature... with a bit of work, that feature could become as powerful as smooth reflections - simply allow us to set the number of exposures and then enable RAW for this and it's done! And Nikon has focus stacking... which is huge for a high-res body like the A7RIII when shooting landscapes. And Timelapse can be done on a separate device, but why? We buy a Sony to reduce the amount and weight of gear we pack around... just put a damn timelapse feature in the firmware already. Even iPhone's have this feature. And while they're at it, please let the Sony mobile device team work on the touch screen. Sony has some amazing touch screen devices, but they aren't their cameras.

I disagree with having a flip out screen! it's good that sony didnt include it, that way content creators, especially vloggers, look at the LENS of the camera rather than look off to the side at the screen. As part of the audience that would be off-putting for me if the vlogger wasnt directly looking back at me through my screen which can ever so slightly feel disconnected.
Most of the good content creators that know what they're doing look at the lens regardless. But by them not even having the screen as an option. They are missing out on potential sales and/or loosing people to other brands (Pansonic/Canon) for the flip out screen. I don't think they need the flip out screen on the A7R3 or A9. But it would make sense on an A6700 or something like that.
I have to admit, the no flip out screen has trained me to have a general idea of what the framing is without needing to know what it really looks like 😂
Jason Vong for sure. Sony’s awesome Face Tracking auto focus system makes up for them not having an flip out screen and because of that, most creators can “make due” without one. But there are plenty of times where a screen would have come in handy which is why you purchased a separate monitor
Sony only left out a flip out screen so they can sell you the same camera twice. How can any one be against having options, I am holding of on new Sony cameras until they bring out a flip out touch screen.
C'mon. The flip out screen isn't for content creators to continually look at while they're recording. It's for them to nail down the framing and composition of their shot before they record (pre-production). 🙃
Haaayy.. What happened with the A7 mk3! That´s the bummer :( Couldn´t care less of the R & S models. Sorry! I like your videos, keep up the good work! As a former news photographer and now car photographer I don´t care for Mp or Video. Never did before either. "I want good image quality". Different noise structure, good colours and Wide "enough" dynamic range at high iso. If I can get the picture in 1 fps, than that´s good enough. That´s the aim in my oppinion for the A7 mk3

This also means no more recording limit hack. The A7Siii has to get rid of the record limit!!!
The 30 min recording limit is imposed on all cameras that aren't "video" cameras. There is an import tax difference on video vs photo cameras. If it went over 30min they would have to call it a video camera and the associated taxations. This is what Lanier and other people say.
There is a hack for this through a Playmemories app which works on all cameras that have it, I use it on my a6500 and it works brilliantly. That was my point here that this is not possible anymore on this camera :( Jason doesn't mention this because his relationship to Sony.

well not exactly, the A7R are famous for their high MP and the A7S are famous for their lowlight performance, which is related to the less MP on the big sensor.

what a negative approach to review! Even the change of battery size is presented as negative which is instead a massive benefit. You are spending $3,200 on a camera and you complain about spending $100 on a second battery that is all you need instead of a pocketfull of batteries? About flip out screen, have you ever tried that on a gimbal? Not the most practical there. I am glad that they did not make that change. Just get a cheap small monitor for vlogging.

As for the flip out screen on a gimbal, I have tried it. It actually makes all the low angle shots easier to gauge instead of the motor blocking the view of the LCD screen
