My car is stock and the only things i have done is change the oil and the normal maintenance (replace battery, spark plugs, and etc.). I heard of all the things that went wrong with mkv's, i guess i am lucky i got a great gti.

Since 1983 my VWs have been an 83 GTI, 88 16V GTI, 92 VR6 Corrado (still own), 2004 VR6 GTI, and a 2006 mk5 GTI which I bought because the 2004 GTI was destroyed when we got struck by lightning. I got my 2006 GTI as soon as they came out (unpimp your automobile) so I have now had it for 10.5 years. Of the VWs I have owned over the last 33 years, my 2006 GTI has been much more reliable than the others (2004 GTI doesn't count, it only had 6000 miles).
The issues I have had are the dealership broke the engine cover during my "free service" and didn't tell me. I didn't discover until I went to change my air filter after the car had gone off warranty. VW charges $300 for a new engine cover but I got one cheap off of ebay. Around 2013 the car wouldn't accelerate quickly. My VAG-COM codes indicated it needed a new diverter value. Got the updated version of the stock diverter value off ebay for $28 delivered, installation took less than an hour. youtube videos made me fearful of my cam follower so I bought a new stock one for $18 (ebay again) and installed it. My other problem, which I have not fixed because it is mostly cosmetic, is the headliner has separated behind the sunroof and droops. VW doesn't use the correct glue so if you live in a hot climate, like down South, the fabric eventually delaminates from the interior surfaces. When my windows are open the roof fabric flaps in the wind.
Not including the cost of changing my oil/filters, brake pads/rotors, a new battery, and getting APR, I have spent about $100 in repairs over 10 years. That is way less than I spent maintaining my previous VWs and my Corrado.

I have a 2006.5 GTI with over 90000miles, no problems, have done all services on schedule, including oil changes; now I use Liquid Molly. I had the same hatch prob, after 87000 miles. And the headliner is coming loose at the back, passenger area, so that will get reupholstered. But my car has been dependable all weather and has over a decade of driving everywhere! I have a APR stage one mod and Kholefaser cold air intake. But limit my mods because I think that causes things to wear faster. I did my timing belt around 85000 miles, you don't want to screw with that, get it done on or before schedule. I take very great care of my car, oh I drive it hard but not every day, as a result, it has never let me down. Minor wear and tear issues yes, but every car has those, even Hondas and Toyotas.

bought my 08 mk5 in 2011 with 27k on it. drive it every day like I stole it and cops are on my butt. now have just over 140k on it. replaced timing belt twice, replaced coils and plugs twice, replaced battery once, replaced clutch twice (due to extreme driving and being single mass stage 3 with 6 puck disc) I have 3" catless downpipe, intake tube, giac stage 1 tune, h&r springs with koni yellow shocks/struts. very reliable and fun. great daily driver with weekend twisties capability

    • @marka4330
      @marka4330 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

crutksdub actually yes. I was short on cash between jobs and bought the cheapest timing belt I could get which was a 40k or t0k belt. no issues with it just a cheap part that I purchased due to $ problems. other than a $1275 stage 2 endurance clutch going out after 75k miles of hard driving car has never let me down. and I rev matched it home thru 5pm traffic then. not all vw's are reliable and not all are junk just like all TH-cam users are not shit talking trolls

I've got a2013 GTI MK6 running a Uni Stage 2 Tune, 39,600 miles on it, and the only problem's I've had are the left fog bulb burning out and the battery dying after having the car 2 years.
Had to have my ECU replaced, but that was because the speed shop that did my tune didn't seal the ECU compartment up properly after doing the bench flash, and my subframe needed to be readjusted after an accident, but neither of those issues were at the fault of VW since outside factors(modding the car, an accident) played a role in them.
Other than those, the cars been a peach, took it on a cross-country road trip with no issues(even after having the run the engine on 90 oct in some areas, which wasn't ideal since the car was tuned to the 93 oct file) and took it on various other high-milage trips with no issues.

Perfectly said. Never been stranded with my mkv GLI but did have a coil pack go while driving home. My car Golf R MY2015 stage 1 ecu/tcu tune dsg etc has been basically rock solid, only issue Australian roads potholes and 35 profile bridgestones screwed up my front end. But was replaced by VW no questions asked now its good as new. I broke the wing on my drivers seat, again maybe I should enter and get out better but was replaced no issues with VW. apart from that I love my Golf. I now can see why VW use Continentals much better on potholes. Winged seats on all cars are vulnerable I get in and out differently now I put my leg over the lower section and use the handle and when sitting avoid sitting on the wing.

Sensors will go bad, the power steering rack seals will go bad and electrical problems, oh my god the electrical problems, these are problems that I've had with my 2003 Jetta, but I love it. If you like to work on cars as a hobby or like to problem solve VW is the way to go. They are very fun to drive and are exactly what Ignition Tube says "A fun place to be.". We also have a 2001 Honda CR-V and it is the most boring ride I have ever had. We bought the CR-V used with 140,000 miles on it and all I have ever had to do was change the oil, spark plugs, plug wires and brakes. I changed the valve cover gasket at like 170,000 miles, but it didn't really need it and it now has 195,000 and counting.

I recently bought a GTI 2006 with 110k miles on it for $5,500. Since then i had to replace the high pressure fuel pump($500), purge valve($40), ignition coil($30), wheel bearing($140), control arm($140) and some little things there and there. But that's because the past owners were some pieces of shit who didn't give a shit about the car lol other than that the car runs like a beast!! I love it I say it's reliable. There are no timing belts on a TSI, they're timing chain cars. It's the water pump that fails on the TSI. But generally besides that they are lower maintenance and easier to make power on up to a K04.... Big turbo, you want an FSI motor.

    • @Jarr918

I have only not been able to start my 2007 gti once. And it was a simple $30 purge valve that caused the engine to flood. It will run forever I feel since mine has 159k miles (I bought it at ~70k). There are a lot of things I've fixed that were probably not necessary for it to run. Either way I am absolutely happy with the reliability of the FSI mk5 gti. I am a technician so I have no problem with doing these repairs but I feel that this car is very easy to work on. The engine bay is spacious and most of the parts are in very convenient places. I would give this car a 4 out of 5 for reliability and ease of repairs. It is a great car to learn how to both drive and repair/maintain.

Same thing with trunk wires on mine.
Dealership acted like I was nuts asking them to check the wires, brake light, wiper, backup lights and lock all not working at the same time, then they soaked me for a new rear upper brake light, which I did not need. Fixing those wires should be on VW. Everybody experiences wiring issues, eventually in the VW. If you have a good dealership, great. If you are stuck in midcoast Maine, forget VW.

  • @sigalius
    @sigalius 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Quick answer. No, it's not reliable. But he can play semantics and tell you it is reliable after he explains all the repairs and maintenance it has needed. Don't get me wrong, I'm a personal fan of Volkswagen styling.
But let's get something straight. Reliability isn't about simply getting someone from a to b. If that were the case then consumer reports and j.d. power would call every single vehicle "reliable" with good scores. Most cars off the lot will get a person from a to b. The real question is how does the vehicle hold up over time, and what is the frequency of problems with the vehicle?
Semantics aside, reliability is fairly objective: the reliability of a vehicle is inversely proportional to the frequency of defects, failures, and issues that severely impair the operation of the vehicle. The less frequent the problems, the more reliable a vehicle is.
When all is said and done, you don't buy a GTI for reliability, you buy it because it is cool and you think it fits your style.

I think it's a good car to learn how to work on cars. The TSI Engine engine is easy to work on for me, especially ignition coils & spark plugs, plus I might be a masochist but replacing my timing chain tensioner, doing my outer tie rods, and replacing struts was a fun challenge. Although honda all day if you want a car to beat on and slightly neglect. Especially the 6-speed manual 2006 accord that's rare as hell

  • @Githrog

Hey ignition, I've been driving my 06 gti for about 7 months now and everything you said in this video could not be more true lol. Great fun car but I like to think of it as a toddler. One minute it's happy and having a blast playing and the next minute it's throwing a temper tantrum. I have never been left stranded but I have had random little quirks happen like this one I keep having now: so when you have the windshield wiper on the delay setting and when not "wiping" it sits slightly higher than when turned off. This is normal, but recently when I have the wiper turned off and it is in its furthest down position and I shut the car off the wiper motor will make a strange noise and the blades will go to their down delay setting position even though I did not hit the wiper stick. The wipers will stay in this position until the next time I start the car and press the wiper lever down or up once. Then they will wipe the window once and return to their correct "down/off" position. That is until I shut the car off and have them randomly go up to the delay down position again lol. Can't figure out why it's happening but it's just one of them weird little quirks that happens.

Good to 200k miles, then they fall apart. Nightmare oil cooler assembly leaks and cracks, plastic water neck breaks, turbo fails, injectors fail, which causes ecu failure, intake flap motor fails...yeah. they fall apart, like all VWs do at 200k. Just recently sold my 2006 GLI at 226k, bone stock, because of a nightmare engine electrical gremlin.

@@justinmeadows3807 Wow, it's been a long time since I thought about getting another VW. Since posting, I've gone full Tesla and have a Model 3. These had their fair share of bugs early on, but they seem to have worked out a lot of the issues with build construction, etc. No problems whatsoever since we got it. It's not for everyone, especially those that are constantly driving more than 250 miles a day, but I can't ever see going back to a gas car.

@@theguythatcouldfly We had a Leaf for almost 4 years. On the plus side, it was reliable, roomy, and whisper quiet. On the minus side, range was really short, and the battery doesn't hold up very well over time. If you can live with whatever range the Leaf has left, they are a good introduction to an EV, but I think for most people, the range will be too short, and you'll need a second car.

I sold my 07 GTI to a friend that had broken up with his wife. He needed a ride so we sold him our third spare car. When we sold it had near 300,000 km on the odometer. These are very reliable cars. I miss our former GTI which has gone to a good home.

With your definition of reliability, I'd say my fleet is pretty solid. My 2007 Audi A8 (at 125k miles) has only need a MAF sensor and fuel injector service (user error, partially due to not giving the 4.2 V8 the Italian tuneup). My '10 Lincoln MKT Ecoboost has had busted spark plugs (due to a gas station having bad gas). My '04 Saab 9-5 (yes, it has the 2.3T motor) needs new motor mounts but it runs wonderfully. I think with a lot of these cars, the under-reliability can be very exaggerated.

My friends mk5 gti breaks down daily but has over 120k on it, and 3 prior owners. My mk4 had some problems but ran solid once I fixed the problems the seller lied about. Mk6 seemed to fix all the mk5 problems and even be a faster car. Any GTI is a solid car.

I've been super lucky with mine reliability wise. My 08 Mk5 drinks so much oil though. Still within handbook guidelines and it's not too expensive but I always travel with a emergency liter of 5w 40 in my boot. Don't forget to mention diverter and PCV valves, cam followers etc, all things every MK5 owner needs to know about. Will always love my GTI!!

2012 GTI it's been a total dream-runs great, fun to drive, looks great (aftermarket wheels/tires) and it's never failed to start and I've had ZERO problems with it. Local VW dealerships (I've moved) are GREAT...have all maintenance done at dealership (oil changes/mileage checks etc) so all the records are dealership for the next person who owns it (if I ever sell it or upgrade to that R). These cars are great stock and beasts when APR gets hold of them! :D
...and then they're STILL reliable and the dealership doesn't mind that APR got hold of it! Hell, you can get APR modded RIGHT AT the dealership (I think 5 are on board now?). Try that with your anything else. You show up looking for warranty work with anything modded and they'll show you the door and say Tough Sh*t! Not VW!
    Dub Life! :D

You couldn't have said it better. At least our mk5's don't leave us on the side of the road but they'll cost you. Causes us to buy a lot of necessary but unnecessary stuff. Once you have one of these cars for a while and you start to get it where you want it in terms of not having little issues with it then it's solid and just wants to be driven. Good topic to bring up!

  • @DigitalDyslexia

I would say they are reliable. The mk5, like you said, has way too many small issues that show VW just didn't care about the details on this thing. They threw it together, and good enough was good enough. On my 2011 MK6, there are less small issues but a few seriously major ones. There's basically a 50/50 chance that my motor will grenade itself due to a shitty timing chain tensioner, which has been PROVEN to fail around 100K, yet VW never decided to recall, but of course they'll take your $1000 to get the revised version. Then there's the water pump, which any GTI over 60,000 miles will have seen at least 2-3 replacements by then. The ECU also isn't very refined, there have been a handful of times where I would turn on the car on any normal day, and I'd get an EPC light, the car wouldn't even attempt to crank, and I'd have to try a few times before the ECU would kick on correctly and allow me to crank the motor.

    • @prolifik_hussle5972

Someone finally being honest and neutral.
drving a VW polo 2018 its good for 10K and hope to drive more safely!
heard a lot of my friends driving VW's and they dont have as much as luck as you do, sadly for them.
Audi, with leaking oil, 1 cilinder blown up. DSG 7 speed...
still gotta say, the models are nice, wouldnt argue with it either.
except some models are plain boring, but every car brand has those kinda models.
they always laughed at me for buying a civic with 275K on the clock.
but hey, who didnt had to go to the dealership to fix the car. the little civic.
(i dont wear a cap, i dont boast how powerful the vtec is, also, mine wasnt a vtec haha. plain old 1.4 :D )
the car gave me such a joy whenever i got in it, my grandpa bought it from me and still drives with it today.
second civic was the 2006 civic, ivtec, i loved it.. such a sweet drivability.
it felt that i was driving a car for real. and the cockpit view just beautiful and cool.
but yeah, no one likes the car, aah well, their choice, and wont argue on their taste!
my dad driving a 2.2 idtec civic 2013 almost 300K on the clock, still drives today, its also chipped.
standart: 150 hp and 350 torque.
chipped: reaching 200 HP and 402 Torque. cuz diesel and turbo.
civic family, pretty much i guess. 0 flaws with all the cars.
happy i bought them eventough no one respects the cars? yes! 10/10 would buy again -IGN.
well, i guess its time for the haters! :D
have fun, or if you wanna ask about the civics sure thing, got lotsa fun.
(did imentioned i now use a work car? the polo 2018? yes i like the car! 10K on it and safe drives :D it only smells a little funny with the fumes, but i guess.. aah well..)
in the end, the most reliable i guess the old Toyota hilux..
cant argue with that, Top Gear vid...

Couldn't have said it better. I ended up buying an mk5 gti w/ 63k miles clean title DSG for $7K now 1 year later at only 71k! Apparently, the last owner took very minimal care of his car VW but wasn't something that made me feel the urge to sell my car after encountering several problems. After several problems occurred I took my car to VW and they ended up changing my intake manifold and clutch packs for free. Months later my rear window regulator and the motor went out, heated seats stopped working, several bulbs went out and the coolant sensor went out as well. So unfortunately for me (mainly because of the clutch packs stopping me from driving for a bit) I'd say the mk5 GTI isn't the most reliable car on the market but, for the styling and handling out of this hatchback compared to others around my price point, I think I made the right choice for my lifestyle regardless.

With my '09 MKV I can say it's only failed on me twice. Last year the Mechatronics unit in the DSG took a dump (Victim of the 65k club) and also shelled out $1k for a flywheel 🙄 and this year I shelled out $500 to replace Heely coils because the last mechanic I took it to seemed to have left loose bolts and engine parts after doing a carbon cleaning.
I love my MKV but at this point I can't keep making it a daily. Looking for an Infiniti G20 as a daily I can still fix up since parts are cheaper. Any 90's JDM car can be more reliable than the new cars put out today.

2007 GTI I bought new and have owned for 10 years. Too many problems to detail here. In the first three years of ownership it was in the shop for things other than regular maintenance more times than all 3 of my other VW's combined. Some problems took more than one service visit to resolve. Most things covered by warranty during that time period but no compensation for the inconvenience or aggravation. Thinking of buying one… live near the dealership, have another car you can count on and save your money - you'll need it when the warranty runs out! This car has been less reliable than my '76 Rabbit!

mkv jetta fsi stage2+. have had zero mechanical problems. my battery died the other day, but the car has 95k miles and ive had the car for 4 years now. its the battery the previous owner put in. had one cv boot fail on me when it was completely stock. besides my locks being assholes, the car is fine. its a good car if you take care of them.
im not gonna count the time a small raccoon decided to commit suicide when it crossed the street the moment all the cars were moving. i was going at least 50. dude went right into my passenger side fog grille, destroyed my intercooler piping, coolant pipe ,radiator support, and radiator fan. he was out for me i swear it. fuck that guy

You got way to vague... "you have this and that.. and one thing here and another one there"
Mine is a MK5 Edition 30 Revo stage 1 and what I came across is :
    - clutch slipping right after the flash tune. Discovered that jumping from 300Nm to 446Nm (230hp to 308hp) it's very normal. I can't really put that on the car reliability since the flash for sure caused it. I replaced it with Sach Performace SRE. It's almost like stock and can handle the torque. Kept stock flywheel. Cost approx 700 euro
    - one broken coil. Common fault to TFSI engines. Got replaced them with R8 coils. Very cheap and never had issues after. Cost approx 50 euro
    - just as a caution measure I replaced the cam follower and diverter valve. Pay extra care to the cam follower because a 40 euro part can cause 2000 euro damage
And that's it... the rest is lots of gas :), tires, pads, discs etc.
I find the car very cheap to run considering the performance level. You can check my videos on how the car pulls and tracks.
Honda was reliable when cars were simple. In the new models with keyless go and all sorts of fancy stuff I tend to find them very very unreliable.

Euro cars in general are finicky but more fun to drive. Compared to my Audi my GTI has been great. It feels solid and you can drive it hard but the parts are cheaper and they’re easier to work on than Audi. Less luxury features means less things that can break or go wrong. Japanese cars are far more forgiving. If you put the wrong oil in it, or skip an oil change, if you don’t gap your plugs correctly, they don’t care they will just keep on going but the trade off is they can be underpowered and maybe even boring. On the other hand if my spark plug gap is off on the GTI it runs rough or throws a code. If you’re meticulous about your maintenance and change parts when needed then your VW will be happy. I have a Tundra which was my daily before buying a used GTI and now I never dread driving. Heck, sometimes after my wife goes to bed I will just take the car for a spin and floor it down a winding road, it’s that much fun.
