Johnny Gill talked about launching what became the most successful album of his career with New Edition. Created with famed production duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the album was a hit, reaching number 12 on the Billboard charts and achieving double platinum status. Gill stated that during the creation of the album, he didn't concern himself with the sales numbers. Instead, he noted the positive public response and recognized how the album’s music significantly contributed to his rising popularity. Gill recalled how fans poured into in-store appearances, particularly in his hometown of D.C., as evidence of the album's success. Despite this, Gill insisted that he wasn’t overwhelmed by the desire to dominate the spotlight. He took pride in participating in the group’s success and cherished the experience, eagerly accepting whatever role he was given in the process. - บันเทิง
The best move NE ever did, was putting JG in the group. Changed their entire Trajectory. That Album Is Timeless!!!!
Agree!
Johnny killed it in his prime . You better have your game cause he would eat you alive.
Preach......... He took them over the top......put them what they needed to be....
Thanks to Michael Bivins for the foresight. 😊

If It Isn't Love, You're Not My Kind Of Girl, N.E. Heartbreak, Crucial, CAN YOU STAND THE RAIN...Classic album!
A lot of people dont know Bobby did perform with them on stage on a couple shows on that tour. Bobby would do his set, NE would theirs & Bobby would come back out & do Jealous Girl & Mr Telephone Man with NE & the crowds would go ballistic.
they came here to Chicago in December of 88/the heartbreak tour. with Al B. Sure as the opening act. and the crowd went ballistic/CRAZY.
Yeah in the movie they tried to make fake tension people don’t know Bobby still did certain shows with them and in fact Ralph was hanging out with Bobby more than New Edition
@@jaygotbandz8717Vlad saw it in a movie so it must be true
@@davruck1 There’s audio recordings of Bobby performing with new edition on the heartbreak tour trust me im a big bobby brown fan i know what im talking bout 😂
but Vlad saw the movie so he still knows more and hes white.@@jaygotbandz8717
NE's sound changed from that point on. JG was that element they needed. You can play the _Heart Break_ album today and it still sounds as fresh it did when it dropped 35 years ago. And it's a new jack classic!!!
in 88 ..it was the Heartbreak album..Dint be cruel..Im Effect mode..Guy...The Boys . Those rnb albums i had at the age of 10
Releasing Dont Be Cruel & Heartbreak on the same day was a genius play by Louil Silas & I bet Busby was in on it all along. That was basically a double album for MCA. Its not like Bobby & NE had any say, both had something to prove after recent events.
Both of those albums are still beloved among people who grew up during that time
New Edition did background vocals on Bobby's "Don't Be Cruel". So it wasn't that much or that kinda competition like people think it was.
I can't imagine bringing Johnny Gill into a group and not giving him any leads. And yet, the one song he ultimately got was Boyz II Men, and it's my favorite on the album.
Ya'll gotta be honest, JG had something to do with NE's album selling as much as it did. I can honestly say that when I heard his voice on that album it put them in a whole new atmosphere. His voice changed the path that they would've probably taken. He added that grown mature sound to them. I always enjoyed them and their music, went to one of their concerts as a kid when they had the hit "Cool it now."
Exactly 💯
💯
You nailed it exactly. NE never would have been able to maintain the interest of the audience who grew up listening to them if they hadn't added Johnny's vocals to the group. They were also able to get new fans to buy their albums and attend the concerts due to the new mature sound.
He’s the only one who can sing.
@@pauljames7438 Ricky bell can sing too
Got love for Johnny. Appreciate your humility. Your talent and the gift you brought N.E. is a beautiful part of history!
Superlady was a sleeper! One of my favs
FACTS!!!!
He is and always was very humble. I met them twice and he was so nice and normal. He never fought for the spotlight. Soon as he opened his mouth at the concert the spotlight found HIM.
New Edition Heart Break album is still my favourite r&b album after 35 years today.
JG's vocals on 'Coming Home" are great.
That album was fire!
That album got hits
Double Platinum is GREAT. but I thought it went Triple Platinum/HUGE album back in 1988/and 89.
I’m sure it is by now, has to be.
I thought it sold 4 mill back in 88,89,90
There are no weak tracks on this album
Best album by New Edition. Can you stand the rain. Is still my favorite. ❤🤎👍😎
Keith Sweat, NE, Guy, Al B & Bobby all released albums within 6-8 months, what a time to be alive
Yessssss
Shucks, Bobby certainly has his own style but Johnny G. could and always will sing circles around Bobby.💯
Johnny could sing better than Bobby but Bobby was a better entertainer than Johnny
I was most impressed and surprised that JG could perform the dance moves just like the rest of NE as well as he did and does
They said that Johnny had two left feet. He had to make a major effort to get them dance moves down. I think he admitted it himself.
“Can you stand the Rain” is hands down my favourite NE song
When they go to that break on the song N.E Heartbreak, and Johnny goes into those ad-libs, shit brings tears to my eyes, those days were phenomenal ✌🏿
One of the greatest vocalist EVER!!!!!
LOVE U JG!!!! THANK U FOR MAKING THE BEST GROUP EVER THE GREATEST GROUP EVER BY JOINING N.E.
Johnny doesn't give himself enough credit. Earlier this year in Dallas while Bobby was sick, He straight killed "My Perogative" and other Bobby Brown songs. He definitely has a strong stage presence.
You have to remember at that time music moved slow in terms of sales. It was about the long game and not the first week!
New Edition is the greatest R&B group of all time
The temptations are the best group of all time.
wait a minute now. Jackson 5, y'all.@@Writer341
@@Writer341 No Way, its New Edition easy. Otis hurt the Temps by putting too many members in that group. If they had stayed with just the 5 and Dennis than maybe you would have an argument but New Edition is JUST 6 guys with tons of hits from just those 6 guys.
@@Malcolm_LaFlarestop it temptations still the greatest group ever
I'm coming home was my jam
I remember that day, It was at Kmart up Forestville mall, they shut the whole mall down that day
I'm a big fan of Todd Bridges, Different Stokes, and I loved his autobiography Killing Willis book (2011). This interview was very informative and I'm glad I watched it.
Thats the way we living "There's no need " Johnny's part🎤🎧🎹💾💽💿📀
They helped each other. New Edition was a platinum group before Johnny. He gave them a more mature sound and they gave him popularity.
FACTS
'Heart Break' is a great album!
JG is Legendary 👍🏾
I love ❤️ JG!!!!!!
The movie was 🔥 RIP Dustin Felder 💪🏿💪🏿
And 'Heart Break' is a far superior album to New Kids on the Block 'Hangin Tough'.
Glad it’s not weird it was that late 80s R&B a new Jack swing was popping. Of course it’s gonna be competition.
Back in the day u loved for all the artist to drop on the same day, 1 trip to the record store and get them all
I need to know what else came out that week that that album was only #12 on billboard
Thats a good question there was a lot of heat in the 80s. Most like white acts that got the first 11 spots.
That was on the pop charts. "Heartbreak" peaked at No. 2 album on the Billboard R&B Albums charts.
But to answer your question somewhat, George Michael's "Faith" was the No. 1 album on the Billboard R&B Albums chart from mid-May through June; Al B. Sure!'s "In Effect Mode" was the No. 1 album from July to early August; EPMD's "Strictly Business" was No. 1 from late August to early September; then Bobby Brown's "Don't Be Cruel," Public Enemy's "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" and Freddie Jackson's "Don't Let Love Slip Away" took turns at No. 1 from September through mid-November (source: Billboard magazine).
Boys to men song 🔥is crazy still bumping that
the Jg interlude track one my favorite NE jams all time!!
My favorite group alltime. Love you jg
I doubt that Bobby wanted to piggyback off of New Edition’s success. They were definitely competing but don’t want to admit it because Bobby won
Neither of them had say in the matter of release time. Louil Silas was in charge of getting both albums completed. Keep NE in one place with Flyte Tyme and let Bobby work with various producers and meet the deadlines. It shows in both New Editon and Bobby story Louil was going to keep them near each other any way he could.
I believe RIAA is lying. I'm thinking at least 5 million copies. I think they are lying about these other R & B artists 1st Albums: Keith Sweat, Mary J. Blidge and Guy!
Nah. You’re just too stubborn to accept it
@blakew2168 Do you have proof that it is accurate My Nigga? Alot of the artist themselves have said the same thing. Points from sales and Royalties missing. One of the Oldest tricks in the music industry!
The RIAA hasn't re-certified it yet. They just re-certifed their singles Mr. Telephone Man, If It Isn't Love, and Can You Stand the Rain back in June.
@yemo2365 Thanks for that Informative Information!
Those sales numbers were during "Heartbreak'"s commercial run from 1988 to late 1989. It's likely much higher than that now over the past three-plus decades, especially given New Edition's resurgence in popularity over the past 10 years.
He was a great fit for the group... Bobby needed to go do his Solo stuff and all that what came with it....get it out of his system. You know how people have that if I coulda. woulda. shoulda moment.of what might have been....It can be a bad thing to stiffle someone's creativity .. They gotta get that out of their system, or it will break up the group for good.. Deciding to add JG was one of those for the group..with the thought that Ralph might leave for good.. Ralph obviously came around... He was probably happy later on for sure... Then Bobby came back.. They were an even better group all together. What fans like about this group is.. they never stopped someone from pursuing independent creative endeavors... Kinda, like the group, never broke up.. They just gave each other the time and space they needed. and they came back together again better and better... It actually made the group better..
Boys to Men is my favorite NE song
Bobby Brown is the 🐐💯👑❗️🗣️
Jimmy Jam and Terri Lewis hell say no more whenever you want a hit where you go babe.
If you listen to both albums together it’s almost like a double album despite Bobby having more new jack swing jacks the ballads on don’t be cruel sound like new edition singing back up
I have a playlist with just those 2 albums together and its played on Shuffle. I cant listen to one without the other.
NE Heartbreak remix mic drop
New edition 4life
Double platinum wtf that album had two of the greatest songs for that era
You can tell Vlad knows next to nothing about New Edition by the question he asks.
Good dude
The best!
True
I thought it for sure sold more than that.
What the Hell is the Interviewer talking about🤷🏾NE been Platinum or Double Platinum at the Onset”Google It”They were use to it it was Johnny who was new to those screams🤷🏾♂️But it was a Excellent choice for all of them adding Johnny “Changed all there lives for the good”!!!
Only Under a Blue Moon and One Love didnt sell well. All the other albums are platinum. Their 2nd album sold a lot.
Vlad always looking for beef about every situation
