The second channel I mentioned is this one: th-cam.com/channels/zUgJrG-w_KQexroYkJR9XQ.html
Just don't expect the same amount of polish there ;-)

We are waiting for new updates if the clone, your videos really motivated me to build one myself. Maybe using threaded rods inside the motor, like the original. But I only found 300mm, should need 320mm right?

I can't wait to see the LCD screen get put on, and especially how you migrate to the custom Prusa firmware.(and upgrade the heated bed as you mentioned) This series has been hugely beneficial to me! Thank you for putting it all together!
My vote is to stream and upload to this channel only. Following two channels is annoying for me as a subscriber.

Enjoyed the video series so much I decided do do the same as I build my clone. I have ran into a lot of complications here in the US with all the metric stuff also made some rookie errors when buying parts, but still having fun with the build. Looking forward to upgrades either channel. I do like the live videos although I have to watch in sections for the most part.

Thank you so much for streaming the build, I really liked hanging out in chat and learned a lot. Including the existence of a local 3d printing meetup! I think having all the streaming on the separate channel will lead to less random people finding it and causing trouble, at the cost of smaller view- and subscriber numbers. As part of that smaller niche audience, I would appreciate the calmer climate, but it might mean less ad revenue for you as well.

You should use a flat table and just roll your threaded rods on that flat surface. Every tiny bend in the rods will show up and you can try to bend it gently into shape until the rod rolls completely flat. If you have a table with a glass plate (or even a mirror or windowglass) that probably works best as a reference surface. The other solution of course would be to just buy thicker z-guide-rods and make shure the frame/guide assembly is rock solid, so the wobble of the threaded rods can not move the extruder assembly at all.

Hi, Tom. This series has been amazing - it's given me the confidence to begin building my own clone, though I'm making mine more like the MK2s and am also going directly with an MK42 clone, as well as lead screws for the Z Axis.
I would LOVE to see you configure your printer with your new MK42 clone so I can see how you configure the original MK2 firmware. :) That's the thing I've actually been most curious about. I'd love to see this on either of your 2 channels and I'm sure when those clones become more readily available others will want to see it as well.
    Cheers!

Just watched your video series and, as some others, I've been inspired to build my own, not going for the cheapest but cheaper than the Davinci have. using 30x30mm extruded aluminium frame for mine and slowly printing some modified parts ready for all the stuff to arrive from China. Hi Tom, thanks for the video series! Got my MK2 clone built following your live streams, originally built using very janky 3d printed parts, I'm now using it to reprint the new parts and they look amazing.
    For the interested ones:
    - I have followed the same Z-axis as tom suggest but used stainless steel and I've got zero Z-wobble
    - I got a aluminium frame from ebay, wasn't very cheap (£55) but considering I had no spare decent wood and a jigsaw ...
    - I started with the 3mm bed, it works fine but the screw in the corners mess up the z-homing, I need to home X and Y then move a bit and home Z
    - The MK2 marlin settings result in overextrusion, probably because of gear size, I changed the extrusion ratio to 0.9 in Slic3r

My vote would be to keep all the vids in one place. I am fine with sorting out the livestream from the other. I like that you do the livestreams, keeps it real - neat to connect with you in real time. What a great time we are living in. Your prep for the other vids, like this one, shows and is appreciated. Done a wee bit of vid myself and I know I need to move from ad hoc to scripted and produced.

I built one. I had never used a 3d printer before, but I now have one that seems to be giving usable prints. I only need to tweak a little bit more to get holes that are the right dimensions. But this was a lot of fun. And even though I might just purchase one if I can not tune the one I built right, it was still totally worth it.

I would love to see the upgrades, and even more. This series has inspired me to build my own, but the electronics is where I get lost. I would like to make a prusa-esque printer with dual extrusion (seperate extruders for build material and support material) and I don't know what board i should be using and why. I would love to see some more in depth videos on electronic component choices.

"How much of the upgrades would you like to see?" I'd like to see all of them really. I haven't tried building this yet, so I don't know how difficult it is to follow the instructions via livestream videos, but I've enjoyed all of the live streams of the build so far. So my vote would be more livestreams - on here or on your new channel, no preference there.

Tom~Excellent work. This wrap-up tipped the decision on which printer to aim for. I am confident I can build one, but it comes down to time. The printer will be a means to other ends and I need it to be working reliably sooner rather than later. This was a great exercise, love your style and very interested in seeing the upgrades and troubleshooting of this machine. Very instructive. As someone else commented, not a big fan of the livestream unedited on YT. I'd like to get to the point of the video not watch the back and forth in chat. Your attention is too divided, that is simply my opinion though, Im sure many others love them. Keep up the great work. V/R k

Great job Thomas! Very inspirational! I have watched every minute of your cheap build and am on my way to build my own version. Im glad you are going to upgrade this printer to fix the main issues, I hope to see every minute of your mods!
Noob question... Can you increase the diameter of the hole that is holding the z-axis screw at the top to help eliminate z wobble? Basically, this would allow the top of the screw to float and not touch the top mount. Or would that cause a different problem with the rotation mass of the screw drive creating a different artifact in the prints? sorry if I'm using the wrong terminology.

    Hi Tom,
I found this series to be very helpful, as I do almost all of your content. Thanks for the effort!
Also, I have a suggestion for an additional video in the series: fire safety upgrades. For this, or any cheap printer, the lower-end parts make one wonder if it wouldn't be wise to add another layer of hardware safety precautions, in case one or more components fail.
Perhaps you could start with a discussion of the safety upgrade options, from minimal to overkill. For example, does it, in your opinion, make sense to add thermal cutoffs and/or fuses to components like the heatbed, the heatbed SSR/MOSFET heatsink, the extruder, the controller board(s), the motors, the power supply, etc.
After discussing the options, seeing some implementations would be great. I haven't found much detailed content concerning 3D printer safety upgrades. Such content might make a great followup to the series. ...Just a thought. ;)

Made some different choices along the way, had some scrap 6 mm alum diamond plate for the frame, used the z couplers. All went real well.
As far as where should you put the other content for this clone? PLEASE put it here as up load at least. Right next to these in the playlist.
I couldnt follow live so have been building with these videos sense you put out the last one and just finished tonight I ordered the LCD screan (large one) because you said it would be included and you would even do two firmwares for the two dif sizes. The LCD and SD card slot are kinda deal breakers for me because I have no computer to keep attached to it while it prints.
PS you may remember me tipping at the end of the last stream :) 3.75* stepper motors
    again love it Tom, thanks

Dear Thomas. I would love to see you do a detailed side by side comparison video on the creality cr-10 and the prusa i3 mk2. Showing the quality of prints, level of detail and repeatability.
    Thanks

I bought a scrap of Corian countertop and cut the frame out of that. $15 and I got a beautiful rigid frame. I also used 8mm Acme threaded rod instead of the 5mm.

Absolutely awesome learning and entertaining series. Thank you very much. I would like the source for the MK42 and see its installation as well as the upgrade to the screen and Prusa marlin build. I am changing over a Wanhao duplicator to all of the Prusa MK2S parts intermixed with the sensor and bed leveling you did on this one for a fun project. How much fiddling did you have to do to get the MK8 extruder drive gear working? Better to exacto the holes or redesign the SCAD file to the left 1mm? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Awesome series!
So here is my question for you Tom: How did this end???
    Thanks for sharing

you could use a voltage boost convertor to boost the voltage for the heated bed

i would love to see another one of these builds for 2020.. maybe an XY design? (but perhaps with some suggestions for not so dirt cheap options lol) they are very interesting and i think i will have a go at this one soon. thanks for the video :)

Instead of the tube. Print out a coupling. Use threaded end on one side and smooth down the other. Make a slot in both to be compressed by a zip tie around them. I forgot what the size of the rod and motor shaft were. I could print you two when I get my Prusa this week.

A video about the custom Prusa firmware would be great! Things like how it differs from the standard firmware (what makes it better), if it is possible to use it with RAMPS (or other boards) and how to configure it...

Where to stream, well I'm following both so up to you. Awesome Stuff! Thanks for the update. I only have the frame at this point, waiting on parts. I used a 6.3mm aluminum sheet for the frame. I was thinking on upgrading to the an original E3D hot end. I have a couple of questions, 1. Z-Rods should I go to real rods or 5mm as long as they're straight will it make a big difference? 2. Heat Bed, I have 3mm & 6.3mm aluminum so I could just get a heater mat or would a 3mm circuit board be better? what would work best?

Want to see it all Tom... the only way we can learn is from success and failure.

More or less finished my build along your videos - I only started with 3D printing 2 month ago and don't have a lot of experience with electronics projects, so the videos were really helpul!
I would be interested in a debugging video, if you ever get around to it. I was really lucky and only had one defective stepper driver arrive, but if the RAMPs or Arduino would have been broken in the way yours were, I probably would have had a hard time finding out. So understanding how you diagnosed that, might help some people.
Just a note: Your Marlin firmware seems to be the stable build, however with the RCBugFix config file. Most things work with that, however my LCD gave me alot of headache. If you use the RCBugFix Marlin version with your config file slightly adapted, everything is fine.
