The initial reaction to Jim Carrey's casting was generally one of complete bafflement, considering how he neither sounds nor looks anything like Dr. Eggman of the Sonic the Hedgehog games. It didn't help that Carrey's Hollywood movie career had been floating in shallow waters for the past six years, and his hiring was seen by some as Stunt Casting by a studio desperate for a big celebrity name to play the villain. *Post-release, it's widely agreed that Carrey absolutely nailed the character with his outrageously over-the-top, yet intimidating when necessary performance, and at times even sounds uncannily close to the gravelly-voiced character from the games.*
I grew up with both the original sonic games and my dad showing me Jim carrey, the mask, the Truman show, liar liar, and few others. I was born in the early 2000s so most of these movies my dad showed me via DVD. When I saw the original trailer(with furry sonic) I was at college and a group of us watched the trailer, the only thing we thought would be good is carrey as Eggman, despite the fact he doesnt really look like him. I do enjoy the movie and I'm glad they removed the furry sonic and made it better, but I love carrey performance.
That part was weird. There were times he actually sounded almost spot on to how Eggman sounds but it would only be for a few seconds at a time then he’d go back to Jim.
I will say that nowadays, he's cleaned up from that odd "none of us matter" way of thinking. This video was a great way to step back from the individual films and see an actor's career in all it's variety and peaks and valleys.
Doug, you did this video because you were inspired and influenced by Carrey’s performances and work. If you do any more of these deep dives you should concentrate on other artists that similarly touched you. Perhaps someone like Tim Burton?
This "to be series" is definitely something I would be interested in. There's just so many fascinating life-stories out there of people who went trough tremendous changes and unthinkable misfortunes that in itself it would provide an endless amount of material to work with. So yeah, keep it coming!
I'll give it this. Jim as Robotnik was one of the best dang parts of the Sonic movie. He really is at his best when he can go all out crazy like that. Sure he looked less like Dr. Robotnik and more like a guy going "I'm Dr. Robotnik! I can't be Jim Carrey, he doesn't have a mustache!" right up until that scene at the end... but man he was a barrel of fun.
This is the kind of stuff I like from NC. That and when he does in-depth historical pieces on different cinematic subjects that we may have forgotten that he still does. Living up to his tag-line: I Remember So You Don't Have To!
When I first saw the "Icons" interview I had a similar reaction to Jim. I mean what the fuck, "we're celebrating icons"? Could you be more vague? What the hell does that even mean? Yes he was condescending and his tetrahedron bit cracked me up but he spoke his mind. He said what anyone else would be thinking but no one else had the balls to say it. Love you Jim.

@@MandleRoss I've seen both obviously. I mean a more recent film that gets him a lot more work as an actor, like what happened with Keaton.
@@mrcritical6751 I've seen kidding but not Birdman but yeah I agree with @alex lazzerly
CAREER DIVE: TIM CURRY! NOW NOW NOW!!
"I'm going to the ONE place that hasn't been corrupted by Capitalism... SPACE!"
Also he's still alive, but had a stroke a few years ago or something like that. He's looking kinda rough now.
@@MrJJandJim Yeah. He's unfortunately not in the best shape.
I could totally see that. Doug I know is a huge fan of Tim Curry
Always loved Jim Carrey growing up in the 90s and early 2000s. Him, Eddie Murphy, and Robin Williams were the three most predominant comedic actors of my childhood and would love to see the last two pop up in this new series.
last two pop up in this new series? but Robin Williams passed in 2014
Carrey was such a MASSIVE part of my childhood. I can't even count the amount of times I've watched The Mask, Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber, and Liar Liar growing up.
Ace Ventura is actually offensive these days… people thought making fun of transgender people was funny in 1994, but now people go as far as saying that it aged terribly just because it was offensive for the transgender people 🙄🙄🙄🙄
I would love to see a deep dive to Arnold Schwarzenegger or Danny devito.
Danny DeVito most def.
Anyone remember Gilbert Gottfried? (Voice of Iago the parrot from the original Aladdin)
@@MrJJandJim i do
Danny deserves it PLEASE do him for sure I enjoy Always Sunny in Philadelphia even if some of the episodes us just goofy and strange he at least makes it watchable.
Jim Carrey may be one of the biggest actor with the biggest low's and and the highest high?!?
That is definitely what he wishes is the case ;)
Actually, no. Robert Downey Junior had a pretty huge low and with his entry as Iron Man, brought him so goddamn high that he never has to act ever again in his life if he so wished. I think he had been close to death because he was into drugs and alcohol, but then got clean and was given the Iron Man job? I could've sworn he had a helluva low compared to Jim.
i mean i've heard him be called "manic depressive" so it makes sense, could describe his mood as a whole
Given his story, I wouldn’t be surprised if we got a Jim Carrey Biopic Movie one day
If we do, Hartley Sawyer should play him.
It's called, "Andy and Me".
No one could portray Jim Carrey. Then again, no one thought that Andy Kaufman could be depicted accurately until Jim came along
@@LilMslDev he does share T H E C H I N
That would be incredibly difficult to pull off.
Can I just say I've been loving how many new things your trying out? It's been a real treat to watch you use your unique writing and charm to dive into different and/or more specific subject matters.
You got me hooked on this Career Dive. I see plenty potential in this series.
Could it be that editorials have finally returned!??
YES! FINALLY
I did enjoy the editorials and rewatch them from time to time. And was hopefully they return in some way.
My feeling is that Doug really wants to move away from Nostalgia Critic, if not retire NC altogether and do some different things, but he's worried that his fans will abandon him if he does. It could also be that Mike Michaud doesn't want to lose NC out of fear that Channel Awesome will fall apart without the Critic at it's center. I say if Doug wants to end NC and try something else, he should go for it. He's been doing NC for years now, and his true fans will support whatever he chooses to do.
Honestly, robotnik is one of my favourite of his roles. It’s easily the most Carey he’s been in a while and does justice to the character. If eggman’s current voice actor left the role, I wouldn’t be surprised if Carey took on the role in the games, his performance is that good
Jim Carrey is absolutely the funniest actor I know.
Love the shout out. My grandfather was a pastor and worked with the mentally disabled with catholic charities. Really good people at that organization.
This seems to be the start to a great series for this channel, I'm excited for more.
I've always found Jim Carrey a bit odd, but he still has talent, especially as Count Olaf because he plays a bad actor, but he still does a good job at it
Carrey's version of Olaf left enough of an impression that Neil Patrick Harris's portrayal in the Netflix adaptation borrowed some traits from him.
@@TheLewistownTrainspotter8102 I like Neil Patrick Harris potrayal but Jim Carrey is surprisingly terrifying in that role while also being seriously hilarious. So Count Olaf, a terrible actor, managed to have 2 good actors portraying him. Ironic
What?!?! Jim Carrey? a bit Odd?!?! noooooo, come on, lets not say things we can't take back
I only rewatched Eternal Sunshine again yesterday! Perfect timing
Plz do this series more often.
I’d love to see one for Rowan Atkinson
“Dark Jim Carrey movie”
Shows “I Love You Philip Morris” 😂
That was a dark comedy
Who hasn’t said “aaaallllrighty then”
I still say that every now and again.
Like a glove..
"Take care now, bye bye then!" 😂
Hi there, nice to see ya. Bumblebee tuna.
@@Destroyah5000 your balls are showing..Bumblebee tuna
A 90s icon who fell out of touch in the 2000s only to build back up into relevancy and back into classic form? Jim Carrey really is like Sonic the Hedgehog.
I remember seeing the cable guy last year and thinking "Shit, this movie is about me"
Growing up in the 90’s, Jim Carrey was my favourite actor.
I’d watch The Mask, and the Ace Ventura movies multiple times a week and still laugh my butt off all the whole time.
I'm so happy that you brought back the editorial style! plus, the branching out to new kinds of topics is also refreshing.

That's why I hold out hope for myself.
Love when the Critic talks about Jim Carrey
Please do more of these!! This was absolutely amazing!!
It’s safe to say that I have worshipped Jim Carrey my whole life. I mean, I basically have been watching him since the day I was born. No joke. His trio of super hits were all in ‘94 and that is my birth year. And full disclosure: Jim Carrey was my first crush. I have no regrets 😂 I’m happy to see that I am not the only one who still remembers him and his talents, and hope that he can be what he once was. I’m very hopeful after I watched Sonic. Heck, HE was the reason I watched Sonic. Jim Carey will forever remain my all time favorite comedian and actors. I love him in Ace Ventura and The Truman Show. I lie. I love him in most of his movies. You made my day with this video. Thank you 🙏🏻
Nostalgia Critic 2021: The Year of New Stuff
I'll be cool with that. Thinking Outside the Box. (HHmm that sounds like a new segment too. Talking about behind scene of Tv Shows or something.)
He said in his Shark tale review he said he’s kinda stuck.
Doug's been ding Nostalgia Critic for over a decade. If he wants to put NC on hiatus, he should.
Jim Carrey's alter ego is Bobcat Goldthwait
Bobcat is the result of an experiment wherein scientists tried to combine Charley Day and Rick Moranis (before either of them were a thing).
Deadpool was a dark Jim Carrey movie. He didn't even survive through that one.
He was killed before the film even began
@@erichfiedler1481 No, he lasted about ten to fifteen minutes, not past the first act, though.
He was in Deadpool?
@Nemo Pouncey Yes, he was. :D
@Nemo Pouncey Ahh... You got it. I wanted to see how long it would take for somebody to figure it out.
I genuinely enjoy Doug’s video essays so I’m excited for this new series.
him and robin williams are the closest to a cartoon as we can ever achive!
I liked his performance in Liar Liar.
Jim Carrey & Robin Williams are some of my MANY hollywood idols.
while he's not perfect, i still like/love jim carrey and his career.
What a PHENOMENAL video 👏👏 this is awesome, Doug. Watching this made me smile so many times
Great idea for a series! Can't wait to see the next one!
I love this idea for a series! If you continue, I'm here for it! Keep up the fantastic work, y'all!
Thanks so much for this comment and we're glad you like the new series!
I actually liked his performance in kickass 2 and sonic the hedgehog
He’s honestly the best part of kickass 2
Jim's eggman was awesome
He was imo the best part of Sonic, not to say that the rest of the movie is bad tho.
@@Jones183 What was more surprising was that he had good chemistry with James Marsden as the straight man.
Even if the rest of Sonic sucked on ice, Robotnic, especially the dance, would have saved it.
can you do a dive into Robin Williams? I hope he also does actors who're deceased too.
I love this man, he is my whole nostalgia and he is the inspiration for my acting career, laughs and happiness. ;)
This was brilliant & I hope that you continue this series! 💜
Jim Carrey is one of my favorite actors. I have always found him very funny. Great video, NC!
Glad you enjoyed it!
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind is a masterpiece and jim carrey's finest work among everything hes done.
To me, Eternal Sunshine is his peak.
Fun fact: Jim Carrey was set to play Howard Hughes in a biopic by Christopher Nolan, but it got pulled after The Aviator went into production. I'm still hoping one day that will happen.
Too bad, he could have perfectly portrayed Hughes' descent.
@@arlenfreeman3439 Fun Fact: Prince Eric from the Little Mermaid was originally going to be played by Jim Carrey and Ariel was going to be played by Melisa Fahns.
As someone who saw Jim Carrey as an inspiration and idol growing up, I really enjoyed this series and look forward to more of these.
His Robotnik in Sonic was by far one of the biggest surprises I’ve ever seen and his enthusiasm for the upcoming sequel even though he has admitted in the last to not being interested in making sequels, it shows that his future is going in a good direction
I love Jim Carrey he was my favorite actor for the longest time. Would love to see more Nostalgia Critic videos like this keep up the great work.
Love this idea for the show!! Would love to see more of these!
You probably don't want to do that one, but consider doing one of these on Robin Williams some day.
Honestly super psyched to see the rest of this series.
I'll say it. This is the best thing he's done in a long time. This was absolutely amazing. Please do more
I would like to see more Career Dive episodes. Maybe do Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, hell even Silvester Stallone might be an interesting watch.
As a kid I was influenced by him to make funny faces. In fact, the way he acted is what influenced my own acting.
You know the character nostalgia critic is becoming more like Doug walker
Eh, that's because it was more less still Doug being Doug just with the NC costume. I'd argue when he does stuff like that, he's himself. When he's doing comedy reviews, that's when he's NC.
I agree, and you could argue that's the point of these editorial videos, but it does still feel different from when he posts a "Doug Reviews" video. I assume because these are scripted and the Doug as himself stuff is not.
True, where did NC's character, the shouting , the yelling and passion go! He's still great but quite mature now
@@TheListenerCanon Agreed
If the First Viewing of Kangaroo Jack taught us anything, it's that the Critic is just Doug drunk.
Okay... your advertisements are made of gold. These are some of the most gripping and zany pieces of media I have ever seen. Doug, are you voicing both announcers?
Thanks for the video, Doug. I'm always super happy to see you experiment with new kinds of videos, and a chance for you to get away from the jokes and dive deeper into a critical analysis of something. This video was a great way to step back from the individual films and see an actor's career in all it's variety and peaks and valleys.
*Next do Career Dive: The Nostalgia Critic.*
Now this would make for an interesting watch
*The Wall and the Not So Awesome Documents intensify*
This will an interesting topic.
Doug, you did this video because you were inspired and influenced by Carrey’s performances and work. If you do any more of these deep dives you should concentrate on other artists that similarly touched you. Perhaps someone like Tim Burton?
Fun Fact: Prince Eric from the little Mermaid was originally going to played by Jim.
I’m totally down to see more of this series! Please do Peter Dinklage, I saw you included a photo of him in the intro. I’m excited for more!
Really like this idea, would love to see one about Tim Curry in the future
3:30 will you review "Earth girls are easy " one day=? 17:30 or "Mr. Popper's Penguins" ?
You're right that he has left such a big impact on pop culture. I've come across so many people that have said "Alrighty then." He coined the phrase.
Jim Carrey should have his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I’m surprised he hasn’t gotten one. He’s a Hollywood icon.
He doesnt believe in icons, maybe he regected
Does he seriously not have one?
That dancing scene in sonic I got chills because it was just so classic for jim
This is great, plz do more! Loved the style of this video!
This was really enjoyable to watch. Well done.
