For somebody who is just starting out as an equipment operator, videos like this on youtube keeps me going. I appreciate what you do. There is so much to learn, from alot of different angles.
What I like about you is your concern about the guys that have to follow your job. An old timer that broke me out on equipment said the same thing and it stuck with me. "Never make it hard on someone else" was his saying

Nice thank you I’ve been a Front Loader for 6 years and ive also used excavators for backfilling pipelines. I just got a call recently a opportunity to excavate pipelines and this vid help also . Im on youtube over the weekend to get set .
Nicely done. I want more experience but don’t have many beginner options around my area. Most of the union work here on pipelines is all good ole boy system/grandfathered in.
The way I’ve learned to ditch straight over the years is to use the pipe. (If it’s straight, I should add) When I set in I’ll walk past my starting point a joint or 2 walking as straight as I can a foot away from the skids or just a meter from the pipe. To give myself a track mark that’s perfectly parallel with the pipe. Then walk back to my starting point correcting any mini flaws in my track line. Set in and use the track line as my guide for the first joint or 2 as I’m digging. Then your ditch is half your guide as long as it’s straight. Then carry on keeping your tracks that same distance from the pipe, parallel as possible. I then actually heal my ditch as I’m backing up to my next set, making sure I stay parallel to the pipe as I’m backing up. One thing I should add, is take a good look at your boom and where it is in comparison to center of your machine. Most hoe operators assume the boom/bucket is center of your machine... when actually they are offset away from cab side 6” inches more or less depending on the size of hoe. So they have a hard time going straight because they are constantly fighting that. So with that being said for me to set in I stay 6” to the right of center of my track lines and remember to just pull straight back. I have a short video of me in action doing this on my channel but with a V-Bucket. I like to have a routine, with my V it’s left bulk, right bulk, grade bulk, heal bulk back up repeat. By far the most productive way to do it IMO. Experiment with different techniques and find what works the most efficiently for you.
Good video very efficient, I like to use track line that way you only turn the machine a 1/4 turn to your left and can see behind you and see your track line, I measure the outside of my tracks, divide by two, once I have that number I add that to the centerline plus 1 foot so as I’m backing up I’m not running over my stakes, I like that better than centerline as you’re not wasting time swinging 180 plus it’s easier to keep a straight ditch easy when you lay water main, good job
That was mainline ditch so nobody had to go in it.but when people have to enter the ditch it has to be sloped at a 45 degree angle if the ditch is deeper than 5 feet but i like to slope it all the way to the bottom.
+gameaddictm it depends on you try each way. the method that you can keep the most consistent depth at is the one you should use.everyone is different so what works for one may not work for another. I use the teeth to judge my depth because if you use the bottom of your bucket on your last cut you are smoothing the bottom of the ditch.fine if you are at the right depth but if you have to go deeper you have to use your teeth to dig down then your flat to rub the bottom again which takes time. if you use your teeth to judge your depth you can be faster because you only have to rub your ditch bottom once.hope that helps

And one thing you didn’t mention nor do is when your dumping the bucket is slamming it all the way open! It just unnecessary wear and tear plus it makes everybody around you nervous all the banging going on.
It is an older video. but I would like to ask, why almost every excavator have extra grabbing near the bucket. It increases weight and all day you lift the dead weight while digging. Swing mass is higher and it needs torque. The normal digging only situation when the pressure of hydraulic is maxim a point is when you starting swing upper carriage. This extra part grab is the worse situation and needs plenty of torque this action.
Because not having a thumb when you need to pick something up is not productive. That excavator is doing just fine with that bucket size. How often is someone right up against their limit when just digging? I use a thumb on my machine more than I use it for digging. Not having to drop an attachment to pick up another one just to grab something is a big time saver. Are you in Scandinavia?

Another thing, like the Aussie cold hunters series, is always used bucked there, are teeth. especially while they digging soft soil, I assume that a smooth edge is better. it is easy to walk with detected and all color change and other things find easily after smooth blade bucket. Sorry, my vocabulary is limited about these details.
@@jaritikkanen3958 my father in law is from Norway and has machines and he had never used a thumb before coming here and he thought they were nice. They all use rotators and smooth buckets. In the Pacific Northwest we have so many trees that tooth buckets and thumbs are a must.

If you have centerline stakes you will have to turn around every set or you will go crooked. If you are just following the pipe same thing.
