Pretty cool video. As a heavy equipment operator and now a field superintendent, I have to tell you that those digging machines are NOT backhoes. They are called excavators. The biggest question I have is why the trench wasn't pumped out. There was a hell of a lot of water and it could have been diverted at best. Keep in mind that I'm not criticizing the video or work. I'm just very curious about why it was done like this.
Yea. I operated most of them from Cranes to Jackhammers over near 50 yrs. Cleveland Bucketwheels on the CJB. Murphy, and Yank lines. Mainly the Allens on UK lines. The Clevelands you had to steer to the centre line ALL the time. They walked around. The Allens were a long boom with bucket chain on Not a wheel/ You could walk away. Have smoko. Come back, It;s still chuffing along the centreline. My fav were the Draglines in the soft/muddy stuff. Loved 'em.
Perhaps a stupid question, but is the spoil pile always re used as the back fill? Even if it's high in clay content, which tends to backfill very poorly?
dbennett4 most of the time it is. Because most of the time it is virgin soil your digging through. If the soil is out of spec then they will haul in an approved fill or amend the spoil in to an approved fill. In 2 years it will look like the tress were cleared but no evidence of the digging. I really is a very professional process and the workers really work to make sure everything is done correctly. Plus there are inspectors. I worked in the underground utilities for 12 years. Water mains, sewer lines, underground power lines and telephone lines. I enjoyed all 12 years it is. Good job.
dbennett4 - "proper" backfill would be cost prohibitive. its built into the pipe for pipelines like this. they could backfill with boulders and it probably wouldn't do shit to the pipe, someone should be able to tell u how thick that steel is. an inch?
How do you avoid damaging the epoxy coating without using screened backfill? Damage the epoxy, it will create a rust hole and a weak spot in the line and the pipe wont live up to its life expectancy. I hope that wasnt an oil line.
They are excavators set up in a backhoe configuration...? I don't know if anyone explained to you that there are backhoe excavators AND shovel excavators. You are probably mistaking the word backhoe to mean what is known as a backhoe LOADER.
When you work for multiple companies with different machines...when they don't need you, lay off, find another company on another line....the downside of pipe lining.....work not steady, but pay good...draw unemployment...
as its* conveyor belt deposits it's = it is Before compositing text into your production video, enter it all into a spell checker and make sure it is properly proofed. Such a nice video, it's a shame to have such a second grade spelling error so visible within it.

Are there any reasons why one should ruin an informal video with horrible music?
+Jens Söderberg I must say that sometimes the background music is acceptable. However, when watching television "How It's Made" or other how to programs, the background music is more annoying than an all day barking dog !!
But 60 years from now, that pipeline might develop a leak and cause a massive spill of several thousand litres of oil, so better to move oil by overground trains instead!
Awesome video! Pipeline works is one of the most fascinating sides of the dirt industry.
Everyday another adventure to fix...

Looks like this was filmed in Canada, and judging by the weather, probably in July or August.

walked the ditch throwing rocks behind a Cleveland....among other jobs....labor..breaking out, but female pulled me out of my favorite job....
wow, that was cool to watch.
Trackhoes or excavators. A backhoe is a rubber tire machine

michael perri prolly 3/8"
David Christensen THE PIPELINE DOESN'T LOOK TO DEEP
It's called reclamation
Didn’t see the holiday detector for coding repairs the jeeper normally the last thing that touches the pipe before it goes in the ground

At 1:43, was that a carrot that was dug out of the ground? And those are not backhoes, they are excavators.
More fun doing it in the ocean or across Long Island Sound!

We call them trackhoes in Canada
Why don't use , gate valve, air valve in pipe between distance 300metre
It’s great video; thanks..... but I think it destroyed a Dinassor’s fossil bones by trencher....@1:45”

I noticed that they always leave out the details and importance of the survey crews jobs.
HI: Do you know the make & model no. of the bucket wheel ditcher? Great video, Thanks for posting
The bucket wheel is a Banister 710

is a pipeline above ground , cheaper to do ?
+Kevin Olesik yes
+Kevin Olesik But, most likely not safer
+Chester Harrah Until you need to dig it up, and find the leak. Just playing devil's advocate. It can't get hit by a car if it's buried.
+Carl Johnson oil and gas pipelines never get to the point of leaking from degradation, they dig them up to repair rust spots smaller than a dime.
+Corey Schmidt Right. A buried line has never leaked. Ever.
What are the horrible sounds on this video?
Ma non usate un cavo in fibra ottica affianco della tubazione che vediamo per un monitoraggio di questa.
I soon no layer plastic warning yo🤦♂️
Carrot at 1:44
Someone doesn't know what a backhoe is.

Stupid comment.

No, of course not, that's why they used this awesome (and very fitting) music

+Javier Fauxnom *cough* yeah, look up the Lac-Mégantic rail disaster and rethink your comment.
I thought my sarcasm would be apparent, but apparently not.
Yeah, ride your bike to work and don't worry about it.
+Javier Fauxnom Sixty years from now all the oil wells feeding into that pipeline will be depleted - guaranteed.
+Craig Arndt yeah its okay its a good thought knowing you are going to burn in hell lol...
