  • Motorola has been a major part of multiple industries. Their business has changed so many times over the past century that I doubt most people understand the full extent of it. This video talks about how important they've been to all these different areas.

    As a few have pointed out, the first Apple computers did not use Motorola microprocessors. They used MOS Technology 6502, which was inspired my Motorola and designed by former engineers from Motorola but NOT made by Motorola. However, they did make the first Macintosh microprocessors. My mistake.

      @@sirflimflam and it’s all a result of a bad management structure.
      Brand new projects get more funding and praise. So working on an existing project seems like a punishment in the corporate culture. So no one wants to put the time in to tying everything together, as they all want to get their pet project named the new hot product.
      IMO it’s the main thing the other tech giants have against Google: they all do a better job of integrating their services and experiences. Like Apple Pay being available in (almost?) all apps on iOS. Meanwhile in Android land, I only see Google Pay as an option in one or two apps I use, and half the time I try them the payments failed anyway.

All contained in a handsome leather bag the size of a purse to carry around. This was back when people called them "car phones" lol.

    • @kaitlyn__L
      @kaitlyn__L 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those ones were interesting because, as you may have guessed, those units were just carphone units with a big battery stuck on (instead of running off the car battery). They got terrible reception because the circuitry was designed expecting the aerial on top of the car. But that same product line led directly to the first brick phone, the DynaTAC. Which worked a lot better and was a lot easier to carry (despite how chunky they look to us today...)

    My father worked for Motorola here in Brazil in the 90's in the semiconductor division. It was a wonderful Company to work for, we had all sorts of benefits, great health insurance and as a kid I remember all the super nice company family parties.
    As the video says, the sold their division to ON and shutdown the office in Brazil. My father ended up opening a representation for ON in Brazil, but a couple years later they cancelled the representation to favor another office. Those were scary days, but luckily my father found other clients and still has the representation and he is doing fine.

    My Grandad started an electrical wholesaling co. in the '20's and when my Dad took over he went after Motorola to be a dealer. Grew up with Quasar tvs and microwaves. use to unload boxcar after boxcar at the warehouse for a summer job. As soon as Matsushita bought the Quasar brand, they moved all manufacturing to Japan, shutting down several factories in Ontario and Illinois. Some say that was the beginning of the end of consumer electronics production in North America. My father was always conflicted by that. I received his ring upon his passing given to him by Motorola for being distributor of the year in '74. Big gold thing with the '74 logo and 3 diamonds. Looks almost like a secret society ring.

  • @fumedrummer
    @fumedrummer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm 57 years old. My first memories of Motorola go back to the 1960s television commercials. They were pushing color TVs with their Quasar label. Their differentiator from other brands was that the Quasar featured "the works in a drawer." Back then, people would call a television repairman to their house to fix the one and only television for the household (and it seems every household needed to have their TV serviced every couple of years or so.) With the "works in a drawer" concept, all the commonly serviced electronics were accessible by a repairman by sliding the speaker/control knobs drawer out from the front of the TV where the tech could diagnose and fix it easily without having to tear the back off the TV and set up a mirror so he could see the screen from back there. This meant that TV downtime was cut to a minimum. Another memory is from watching the old Adam 12 TV show. Stock footage used in every episode showed a picture of the Motorola police radio while the dispatcher's voice was heard. I had a Motorola CB walkie talkie up until a couple years ago when I donated all my CB stuff to Goodwill when I changed homes.

I had a Mac in '94 with a Motorola CPU, a Micro-Tac flip phone and pager in '98, and a razor in '07. I also was aware of their part in the Apollo missions I watch when I was quite young. I watch the moon landing with my Pop that hot July day in Chicago, IL. I was 6 years old and I'll never forget how everyone talked about it. That and the original Star Trek series piqued my interest in science, and particularly, electronics. I've repaired computers for 30 years and Motorola used be a real big name in anything radio. Nice video and brought back a flood of memories.

    Motorola used to be “the” radio to get in ambulances, cop cars and fire engines. Then other companies sold better products because Motorola wouldn’t fix anything after the product was a few years old. They just wanted you to buy a newer model all the time. No factory help at all. Pretty soon EMS went to other companies. I know this because my husband is heavily involved in EMS for over 40 years and he’s been into the electronics for all fleet vehicles.

    For me, Motorola will always be about two-way radios and cellphones. I've carried a Motorola walkie talkie and had a Spectra mobile radio in my truck, and a Motorola phone in my pocket, and it was simply the best thing you could get at the time. Motorola phones running on Qualcomm chips are like peanut butter and jelly. They still dominate the two-way radio industry and Lenovo has kept the brand alive in cellphones. One industry glossed over was the cable modem branch. They also make DSL modems plus cable TV set top boxes. That made Motorola a huge player in the spread of broadband home internet and how people watched TV. And again, I think the importance was skipped on the 68000 microprocessor. That thing powered the vast majority of arcade games in the 70s and 80s and thus can be said to be the father of what we play now. Successfully emulating the 68000 on Intel PCs is what directly led to the "retro game" craze of today. Without the 68000, a LOT of this would never have happened, or at least been a lot harder.
