We are on our second Berner. Our first was a male that lived til this July age 8. He got lymphoma and it took him rapidly. We still love this breed so much we got a female this time. Boy are they different! Our first Berner Bentley got really big and was so amazing, loved by everyone who met him. I will continue with this breed until my time is up. There is heartache when loosing such a love able breed. I hope we can get the breed healthier. ❤ my berners.
Lost our 14 year old 1 yr ago she was amazing. Waited till kids were old enough. Plenty of land and she’d run around in the morning then that was it. Wouldn’t play catch, throw the ball once she’d bring it back once that was it 😂. Take her for a walk if you weren’t going in the direction she wanted she’d stop dead on the road. For us she was the perfect family dog.
Just lost our 12 YO Berner last spring, spent about 8 years as a therapy dog. I'd add #6. Berners want to be with their people; especially as pups. If your household situation is such that you must leave them alone for hours per day, especially when young, reconsider getting a Berner. They are such gentle souls, it's traumatic and stressful for many of them to be abandoned by their people for hours per day on a regular basis.
It was such an eye opener having a Berner after a GSD! The differences, especially when it comes to training and discipline, are night and day. My GSD had my heart for the safety and security she offered me. My Berner now holds my heart for the loving, intelligent, goofy bear he is. ❤
Great video for those unfamiliar with the breed., In my experience of having three Bernese each ca 9.5 years. They like a few daily walks and a good sprint , playing in the park etc, However some looking for a dog to join a marathon runner, (Like me training 20-25 kilometers) they are no way up to going with a serious runner for 10 kilometer. they are better in short sprints than 5 kilometer of running. Given their weight you do not pull them either and it may be bad for their Ligaments to try train them. active lifestyle should be translated as many short activities, so mr or mrs berner can havea nap in between.
Yes you definitely need to watch your dog closely for any signs of over heating for any breed in any climate. For your region keeping a bernese inside in the AC would be the best option unless its time for potty breaks or short stints of exercise or play then make sure adequate cool down options are available. Dogs can overheat very quickly. Its best to not push the limit if you are at all unsure.

We get our Berner feb 2. My son really wanted to teach it how to fetch. Some research says it’s hard to teach them how to fetch. Do you agree?
Do they pant continuously
Question: What about outside temps? Is North Alabama too hot? I've heard if daily temps gets above 70 degrees it can be fatal in minutes?
