The clothes don't have to be soaked. Contact with a few molecules is all it takes and spraying until the surface appears damp is sufficient. The ticks do have to make contact. Consider rolling up the bottom 6" of pant legs.
Greetings! How much do you use on your tent?! Have my first camping trip coming up and would like to treat my tent with it. It is a 9 person tent if that helps. Thanks :)
I travel with three (3) one ounce bottles of concentrated permethrin. I dilute it and spray it in hotel rooms, on the mattress, chairs on my shoes, clothes, anything. I can't stand bugs!
+ArmadilloPepper.com yea, it's super effective. Heading out on a trip in a few weeks and already treated my clothes. Not only does it keep the ticks off I've noticed that it keeps the mosquitoes away as well.
Thanks, i seen this video when it first came out. In southern Utah, we're about 95% mosquito free, however, since now I'm heading to Houston with my church help out with disaster clean up. I know how to prep and i and put my limited backpacking skills to work. Thanks for all tips and videos. God bless
Awesome! Glad to have helped. Backpacking skills are really good survival skills. God bless in Houston. Always glad to see churches doing good work like that.
I found the best way and just moved West of the Rockies. Not thst is a 100% but in 3 yr post move I havent seen one tick. While in the state of Misery, Mo, I would see a few dozen in a day.
Thanks!! My jug is on the way and the ticks are gonna pay! I sprayed down a shirt...but soaking seems much easier and thorough. I live IN the woods so the ticks are everywhere.
Sweet. Yes, I've found soaking to give me more piece of mind. I want to say there are other permethrin based products you can spray around your yard as well to help keep ticks down.
I usually use the Sawyer stuff, but do the pump spray. I think the soaking method would be more effective and will look into the concentrate now. Good idea!
Thanks, it's worked well for me so far. I think spraying is ok too but I'll still mix my own. Way cheaper than buying the premixed Sawyer stuff. Thanks for watching!
+potatothorn so far it's worked really well. Dunking it like in the video is probably more effective but I'll probably use a spray bottle next time. It's more convenient.
@@TimWatsonOutdoors The problem with dunking is that you have to dispose of the leftover solution left in the bucket. Dumping this stuff isn't great for the environment.
Just something else I thought of...I have some friends who are hunters who use this. They also wash afterwards with odorless detergent to control any scent.
I tried this before backing a few days ago and it worked! What I wonder, is when you sweat in 100 degree temperature does that re-wet the dried permethrin and make it absorb into your skin?
Follow up Question: I live in the north western NY...its STILL snowing here in April...I need these cloths by the end of month. Can I soak them, squeeze out the excess, hang in cold garage to drip out remaining THEN place them in dryer to finish the drying cycle? That sight says it will "start the breakdown process" if they are Washed and dried, but doesn't mention if it will break it down if just dried...Thanks again
Hey, no way. I used to live in Buffalo so I get it. I'd hang it in the garage and leave it there then bring it inside on hangers or a drying rack after squeezing the excess (don't wring!). I would not put it in the dryer for the first soaking. I feel like it has to "set" before being able to wash and dry normally.
Thanks for the video. I'm in Australia and Sawyer's products aren't available here and shipping is prohibitively expensive. Searching around I followed your video, and used Brunnings Home Ant, Spider & Cockroach Killer, which is 100g/L Permethrin 25:75 Solvent 779g/L Hydrocarbons, which I got from Bunnings. It has (IMO) a fairly strong smell. Follow Tim's directions and do it outdoors, and in the shade, wear gloves. The bucket I had was fairly wide, and I couldn't completely submerge all the clothes I was treating (a pair of socks, scundies, shirt, and hiking shorts). So, I ended up transferring it from a bucket to to big zip lock freezer bags (from Ikea). This helps reduce the chemical odor (which I don't want to breathe) and I can let the clothes soak longer without fearing that the solution will evaporate (I used nearly nearly all of the 200mL container already). Tim said to soak for at least half and hour, I read elsewhere to do at least 2 hours. I'm going to leave it for at least 2 hours whilst I do other things before drying the clothes. I hope that this will maximise the effectiveness. I also go some SC Johnson Off! Tropical Strength insect repellent that's 191g/L Picaridin which I'll use on myself and some gear (gaiters, etc.). Picaridin is gear safe unlike DEET. I'm hoping this double-whammy should keep the mossies and ticks and stuff away. I got eaten alive the last time I went out.
--Apologies if i missed this but did you put the excess mixture into a spray bottle? Is it still effective to use at a later time? As you mentioned, it can get expensive..
I did not. I didn’t show it but I grab every single piece of hiking clothing I could potentially use and random socks I use for hiking to use any extra up.
Thanks for the video. I do 18th century re-enacting (F&I and Rev War) and our spring & summer events most times are fields loaded with ticks...so I am looking to treat all the cotton items with this stuff. I have a lot of cotton items to treat and am looking to use a small plastic tote to do this in so I can get all the cloths soaked at one time. I have MANY articles of clothing to do (socks, pants, shirts, wife's skirts, etc...) so I wanted to use a large plastic tote and do it at one time. What would be enough mixture to do this in say a 30-35 gal tote? Following your mixture, what would my oz's to water gallons be? Hope you can help...thanks
No one hates ticks more than me...Well maybe you do, Lol! I've been using the Sawyer brand but the Martin you use seems more economical. Very good video, Tim!
+Stella P. Lol! I do hate them, they creep me out because of the disease aspect. Thanks so much for stopping by. I love getting outside and I don't want bugs/ticks to stop me.
Follow up #2: Sorry to keep asking....Can't find this info on the site....When you are done with your soak...do you keep the solution? If so? how long does it last before no good? And can I keep soaking clothing in them over and over? Thanks
I do keep the soak yes. I don't think there's an expiration date for it (within a year at least). I usually just gather up all the stuff I can and use it all up.
thanks.. I went and bought a spray bottle for the excess..I'll bring that with me to our encampment and use it to spray around the tents flaps and base of tent. Maybe that will keep all the spiders and such from seeking shelter INSIDE my tent's ridge..LOL
Hi Tim, I have a bottle of Martins Permetherin too, but it says it's 36.8% Permetherin and I think in the video you said yours was 10%. My bottle looks just like yours. Could you please confirm the percent Permetherin on your bottle? I just want to make sure to use the right concentration.
I'm from Poland, when I dump my permethrin into water it turns wicked white .. I put 10 ml of a 25% permethrin solution (brand name Ektopar) per 0.5 liters (1:50 ration). it dilutes the solution to 0.5% permethrin mix .. but the color is like watery skim milk white. I wonder if your ratio is different or why your product doesn't go white like mine. (can anyone comment on their experience?)
Hmmm, I have no idea. It gets cloudy when I first put it in but clears up relatively quickly. Does yours have a petroleum base or a distinctive odor to it? My clothes have a very slight scent after the first application but one wash and the smell is gone. I know some brands are petroleum based to help it to stick better to whatever it is being applied to. I purposely looked for one without an odor or petroleum.
so the box says permethrin[CAS 52645-53-1] 25g/100ml, and that it also contains Marlipal 31/90 [CAS 68439-54-3] and N-metylo-2-pirolidon [CAS 872-50-4].. no idea what those are.. it does have a slight smell but it doesn't bother me.. also I use it only on the outer layer of my clothes. what do you do with the leftover mixture? I mix up about 1 liter for a pair of pants and a shirt it's enough to get the clothes moist .. I leave it in zip lock bag for a few hours to marinate and then hang to dry. no leftovers to deal with for me
Hey Tim...Since you are familiar with the WNY area....I am sure you have been up into the Adirondacks during the summer months...Wondering how this stuff works on knats, Black flies and biting flies (flying biting type insects)....which infest most mid summer wooded lake type areas...from Canada down to ...well everywhere LOL
In general it should keep all bugs down a little. I soak my hammock in the stuff as well. It will kill any bugs that land on the clothing or fabric. It is not an effective repellent on skin. I'd use picaridin for that.

Or have you seen this or heard of this happening before? 2.) Second and more importantly I got all the clothes soaked but upon soaking them and squeezing them out the solution became bubbly like soap and when it dried you can see Shiny crystally stuff all over the clothes... the suds Inus has me concerned and the crystallization makes me ask should I be washing these before we wear them? I know I don't have to According to some of the videos but have you ever run across this soapy type end result? Thanks again
Based on what I've seen. 1. Completely normal if it has time to settle. Shaking it up and mixing is what I do/did. 2. Yes. The crystals/shiny look is normal after the first application for the season. It goes away after the first washing. If you reapply at any point it'll come back. No idea why it happens. Your mileage may vary but I've worn it like that with no ill effects. 👍
The clothes don't have to be soaked. Contact with a few molecules is all it takes and spraying until the surface appears damp is sufficient. The ticks do have to make contact. Consider rolling up the bottom 6" of pant legs.

Very informative video Tim. Thank you for telling us about the cats!! Great vid my friend

can animals smell it
Interesting question. I'm assuming they can. It didn't have a strong scent when dry. One wash and it's indistinguishable from other clothes to me.

I don't. Too much run off and this needs to permeate the fabric to work.
Where do you buy the concentrate?
Amazon.
Can the soaked clothes be put in the dryer for drying? Or do you recommend just hanging or lying flat and air drying?
Air dry flat. Don't put in a dryer. The tumbling action (and the heat) will make the bonding less effective.
Thanks from Montreal!
