    This video is amazing. 10th planet rashguard on marcelo garcia!! That's why I have his x guard book. I trained a year of 10th planet and I knew the x guard would tie in nicely.. And now to see one of my biggest jiu jitsu mentors in my favorite systems' rashguard is just amazing. Amazing!!!

    @BHanson41z Rubber guard is antithesis of what MG's jiujitsu is about, which is movement, timing, athleticism and speed. MG does not like locking himself to the opponent from the bottom, which is why he rarely even locks up full guard.

    many techs in every art are dependent for effectiveness upon body type,eg bob and weave and inside fighting for small boxers,uchimata for taller judoka etc,it doesnt mean there useless or will fall by the wayside.In comps you need never fight anyone bigger .

    You have already admitted athleticism helps win matches so I'm not sure what point you are arguing here at this point. There's a reason why elite BJJ practioners spend hours on strength and conditioning training. Because landing the moves on someone with good technique requires good athleticism. You don't think elites like Palhares, Andre Galvao and MG are "not very athletic?" Wow, I beg to differ.

    good bjj works regardless of athleticism,if both guys have same tech,the most athletic wins.None of his moves rely on athleticism,not a single one.I can do them all on lads at my own grade and im 39 yrs old and only average strength and speed.Its timing and anticipation that can be perceived as great speed often.Athletic guys in grappling would be jacare,palharaes,rustam,popovitch,all the collegiate wrestlers ,elite judokas,etc.Most bjj elites arent very athletic.

    I couldn't agree more with bornfedslaughter. We're adults, right? Warm ups should be entirely optional. As for injury prevention, I don't know about anyone else but practically every bjj injury I've ever had came as a result of 'warm ups'.
    I used to get off work and sleep in a van in the parking lot of my old school so as not to miss open mats. I'd walk inside, partner up with someone and immediately roll hard and never got so much as a sore muscle. But I've lost count of how many times I've had to miss a class or not get the learning I could have out of a class because something went wrong while getting ready to learn.

      200 no 300% accurate! warmups and killer conditioning classes have almost injured me at times. I've been careful and lucky. Funny thing is, when I roll or do technique drilling everything is fine.

      I agree, kinda. Group Warm ups should be optional, however the sitter outer, should most definitely go in a side room and stretch his fucking ass out, probably set 2 days a week aside ,before training, and for about 45 minutes - 1.5 hours, (time goes by fast sometimes), stretch his hips, and legs in the lunge group of positions. That include, the quads, hips, front tilt of the groin/pelvis, you will feel what I mean when you do it. As well as the forward bend,(sitting and standing),and standing legs spread and standing/sitting legs together, and sometimes downward dog. Butterflys, and that's about it! Thanks for reading, I hope I helped someone find comfort in relaxing and loosening their hips.
      I find it's best to start off with the sitting forward bend, legs together, fertilizer firmly up, and start slow, and relax, and start without music, and stay slowly and relatively painless, pushing yourself sometimes and going easier others, and feel the flow. Start without music and when u get a good warm up, stand up, legs together, do a double punch, dynamic stretch , to further help your warm up. Like using your core to bend at the hips, to use both fist to punch the ground. And you might not go to he ground and that's ok, keep good posture, and then finally before you go to lunge position , spread your legs, and stretch down each side, very easyily And flowy like. ;)

      To each their own but EVERY sport has warmups. Its scientifically proven that you need to warm up before going into a hard workout to help prevent soreness and damaging your muscles. The warmup drills in this video is extreme but they don't do it everyday. Its the fun side of jiu jitsu and its done once in a while. Marcelo has another more technical warm up on his channel. The movements in the warm up help muscle memory for when you really roll in jiu jitsu. But ey, if not warming up works for you, then by all means.

    Oh, i see. So he doesn't use rubber guard because he focuses his game on techniques that work against bigger guys. hmmm.... sounds a lot like the philosophy behind BRAZILLIAN JIU-JITSU. Did you even read my comment? and the one i was replying to? but hey, thanks for helping me make my point.

  • @saltyseaweed
    @saltyseaweed 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Athleticism is not the opposite of good technique. True athleticism incorporates good technique with timing, explosiveness and endurance. It is fine to say one should never over-rely on athleticism at the cost of having bad technique but the truth is any physical contest, including BJJ, relies on athleticism. Otherwise, Helio would have been winning contests at 80 years of age.
    I don't think MG would take athleticism negatively. Quite a few of his moves rely on athleticism.

  • @masterblastertkd
    @masterblastertkd 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think Marcelo Garcia is a good enough grappler, and a smart enough person, that if he thought using rubber guard would help his game, he would use it. The argument that if his limbs were longer we might see him use it is totally flawed. For anything to work in any style of martial arts, it has to be applicable to any body type, otherwise, eventually it will fall by the wayside. If rubber guard is only useful for those with long enough limbs, then inevitably, it will also fall.

  • @ThatKidWiththeDice
    @ThatKidWiththeDice 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @lumpdu Eh. Whatever. He doesn't have to use Eddie's moves to support Eddie's overall philosophies on Jiu-Jitsu. Marcello is as open-minded as they come.

  • @masterblastertkd
    @masterblastertkd 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    You said before that i'm being stupid? That was my first comment... I didn't call anyone names, just stated my opinion. Notice how i said, "the argument... is totally flawed." and not, "F@# you, you're stupid, you suck, etc., etc.," This is why there is so many people on YT arguing. Name calling, taking everything personal... instead of having a good conversation about technique or styles you take it personal. Instead of saying i'm stupid, just prove me wrong... if you can't, then agree.

  • @scarred10
    @scarred10 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    wrong,all sports and all combat sports feature different techs and styles that suit diff body types.You dont really need long legs for rubber guard ,you need great hip flexiblity and it also hasnt been successful at elite level with any consistency.Furthermore marcelo favours techs that work on big guys in the open class since he always compted in those in the past,rubber wont work on a superheavyweight if your as short as marcelo

  • @scarred10
    @scarred10 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    any bjj thats reliant on athleticism or speed is bad bjj,he may use all his attributes in comp but I guarantee you hed be disappointed if people thought he relied on athleticism.Good bjj relies on leverage,structure,sensivity and timing,same for all grappling arts.Max force with min effort.

  • @bornfedslaughter
    @bornfedslaughter 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just think you should warmup before class if you chose too. You should have to pay to go "warm up" (work out) before you learn techniques. I think it's absolute bullshit to warmup for a half hour and then be too tired to roll.

    • @rodcc885
      @rodcc885 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Late but whatever. I think warming up is necessary if you want to improve your jiu jitsu. The movement in the warm up drills are applied to jiu jitsu. They are not random movements that you will never use. In the video above, they were doing stuff you wouldn't do in jiu jitsu but they don't do that everyday. Once in a while, gyms have fun. Yes opt out if you think you might get injured. But it is not absolute bullshit. Relax bro and live a little
