Ye. He is being very modest. Was in the gym with the guy once pre-tri nations match and was with pier spies. They were curling (tossing) 27kg like they were 2kg's. Ridiculously strong. Miss his tenacity on the field .
Burger had a massive engine and would go all day. One of the true greats. Seems like a nice guy. Shame he batted his copy book with the eye gouge on Fitzgerald on the Lions tour.
He is just blessed with natural strength genetics like his father and brother. He also never did the typical gym stuff either - th-cam.com/video/BR2POl6SHHw/w-d-xo.html
Just heard even at Saracens he didn't push any weights during gym days 😂🤣😂 And teammates were all awe that he "can't be that hard hitting player but not pushing any weights". Well, he's made it clean now.
Funny story, but is it really true? I was benching 80kg in matric because our coach said that we had to bench our own weight minus 10kg to stay in the team.
@@symeremeyers4148 He did. He was just from the school of thought that said you had to be big, strong and fit before you worked on anything else. We started training 3 days a week in late January for a season that started with an Easter festival and most of that pre-season prep was spent on conditioning. That aybe isn't unusual now, but I was at school in the early 90s.
Anyone can bench 60?! You know how long that took me? Crazy! It is also crazy that his highest was 90 I reckon that's bullshit, I'm 1.76 and I push 90 and I'm just a gym regular, no other reason to be strong
Bench is pretty useless alright when it comes to rugby performance but squat and deadlift aren’t as they train Posterior chain...which is key to athletic performance. Benching only trains anterior chain which is largely irrelevant to athletic performance.

the blokes at saracens confirmed he never did any gym work at all, so i believe him
Schalk Burger has a real man's strength that comes to the fore in combat & not in the gym. Alot of top players are like that.
He was an absolutely fearless competitor that put his heart and soul into the game and was unbelievably good. Seems like a top bloke
He put his heart and soul into the game……and his fingers into the eyeballs of the opposition.
@@SuperEdge67 didn’t realize he did that. No excuse for that sort of brutality I agree

I do not believe his max bench was 90. No chance
Only because he stopped at 90 because he didn’t like doing it
With training it would gone well over that.

Only bench 60kgs and still a monster💯!
Bench is more suitable for the smaller guys with shorter arms, probably why Burger could only bench 60 back in the day
@@TheWelterWeightWendigo I'd say he's exaggerating. I'm 185cm and half his playing size and I can bench 90.
@@bremCZ no why he lie, he said his Max ever bench was 90

Did your coach actually know anything about rugby ?

Bro 😭😭😭. I thought I was the only one 😭💀
i heard before that the guys a beast where it matters... the pitch... gym is useless.... specially bench...
When it comes to rugby what matters is fitness and throwing your body. Physical strength will only help
Gym helps a lot when done correctly and bench relies on skill as well as strength.
Bench is pretty useless alright when it comes to rugby performance but squat and deadlift aren’t as they train Posterior chain...which is key to athletic performance. Benching only trains anterior chain which is largely irrelevant to athletic performance.
Gym is key, you don't know what your talking about.
A lot of players wouldn't be bench monsters. When you play with 100% commitment gym strength means less
Get a women who looks at you the way the lady on the left looks at Schalk Burger
She must have saw his finger action on Luke Fitzgeralds eye
I know some Rigby players with natural strength who don't lift.
His ass LMAO
Weak i started off at 80 and my max is round about 160-170
Yeah course it is
Nobody cares really..
Bet you got a 10mm vienna also..
