Agreed. As a kid I was in and out of hospitals a lot. Im now 29 and there are still a lot of nurses I remember from that time and some who remember me (!) I remember excactly one doctor, who was our family medicine doctor for many years and became good friends with my mother. I think it shows how much of an impact a nurse can have, being compassionate, as doctors tend to be very distant.

Mary Seacole also played a large part in making nursing a more respectable profession, especially for women of color. She operated around the same time as Florence Nightingale (Crimean War), but was barred from the Red Cross for being a WOC. She developed a nursing style that blended modern sanitation and traditional medicine.

  • @pinkseonghwa

Although Nightingale is deservedly remembered, Mary Seacole is way too often forgotten. She was a Jamaican-Scottish nurse who also worked during the Crimean War, and directly on the front lines at that. Seacole actually applied to be a part of Nightingale’s nursing army (among others), but was rejected. Maybe she didn’t have the ”proper” education or she wasn’t qwhite up to standards. Or maybe it was a mix of both. But she was badass and said ”you don’t want me? FINE I’ll go there anyway with my own money” and on site basically scrapbooked together a hotel for injured soilders.

My mother went to nursing school in the early 60s. She was told her nursing program was an “advanced” program for students with high academic scores in high school. Her program had a must higher drop out rate than the standard nursing program.
She learned after graduation that the school was actually running a test program to see if nurses could be taught at the same level as med students and be able to do higher level tasks typically reserved for doctors.
It was basically a precursor to a nurse practitioner program. She knew so much more than the average nurse due to the program that she was a charge nurse in a major hospital by the time she was 25.

My grandma was a nurse in Brooklyn, NYC in the 1950s. Her father was a doctor so she grew up with nurses around and says she always wanted to be one. She continued to work after getting married in '52, moving to Philadelphia, and through her first two pregnancies. While pregnant, she was transferred to the maternity ward because her "condition" was less likely to offend patients there. She turned 92 at the end of January and is still sharp and independent!

i always get the notion that professional hygiene and respect wouldve been an easier concept to sell. maybe a doctor or nurse being pristine and tidy in a messy environment or in an era where general hygiene was low would be a show of professional status and worth, and thoroughly washing your hands and instruments a sign of respect towards the patient. germs or not, you're touching your bum with those hands, even piss is sterile but that doesnt mean anyone should wanna have a piss stained finger touching their raw flesh, i dont see why that was such a hard concept to grasp

    • @nathanielmitchell6383
      @nathanielmitchell6383 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Crosshill you'd think so but there were definitely times in history when a doctor was considered more skilled etc based on how much blood he (they were basically exclusively men at that time) had on his clothes ... He was really getting his hands dirty so to speak for his patients ... So regardless of whether people knew about or believed in germ theory it was still important to argue for hygienic practices in particular hand washing

My mother and sister are both nurses. In the US, the cap nurses wore was designated by the school they graduated from, and was part of their uniform forever (until caps were dispensed with). With both my mother and sister, nurses wore white polyester, and white rubber soled shoes. The shoes were to be polished daily and kept gleaming white. Those were also the days of pantyhose, the modern torture device. Some places required white hose. Sometime in the late 90s, the traditional nurse's uniform was replaced with scrubs. Most hospitals and clinics use color to denote one's profession ie nurses wearing a different color than support staff or doctors. I had no idea until I was being discharged from hospital by a nursing assistant who was to graduate from school the following week, and told me if I saw him again, look for blue.

I work in a children's hospital in the UK and the scrubs/uniforms are plain but the visors which are worn when dealing with infectious patients have a extra bit on the holder that with a picture such as an animal or a superhero logo. Since I can imagine the visors could look quite scary to a child I think it's a nice way to help with that.

My mother, of blessed memory, survived infancy thanks to a trio of Scottish nurses specifically trained in caring for premature babies. She was born at Camp Stoneman in California in 1944, 3 months premature. A few months prior the officers club donated an incubator which enabled her to survive. When she was five months old, and ready to leave the hospital, the story is that the nurses had grown so attached to her that she had to be smuggled out. Tragically the three nurses were among those killed in the kamikaze attack on the USS Comfort in 1945.

It’s such an amazing workforce with such a positive community of people and caring for people may not be for everyone but it is one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. I miss it all the time but I’m glad I got to experience and dip my toes into the profession.
Australian nurses have such a rich history and so many achievements within creating normalized medical care. Uniforms were similar but nursing team leaders were still called matrons all the way up into the 90’s.

I worked in a hospital for several years and just as I was about to sorta finally make up my mind on whether to go back to school and further myself in the field...I got sick...not just a little sick, life altering sick...so now I spend most of my time on the other side of the bed or as the patient and it does nag at me sometimes. I LOVED my time at the hospital it was some of the best and worst (toughest) experiences of my life and I miss it dearly but I'm thankful I had the time I did. If my body were to somehow cooperate I would go back to it again in a heartbeat. Australian and NZ nurses (I'm from the states mind you) have an amazing and fascinating history...those were some truly tough gals! I wish you well doll and hope things improve for your health.

That was fun! I graduated in 1975 in Canada. My uniform was a white dress, white pantyhose and white shoes with the white cap that got a black band after passing our Registered Nurse exams. I cannot tell you how many pairs of pantyhose got snagged on beds, wheelchairs and other equipment. I liked the cap when it was made of cotton and could be washed and starched. A simple twist of the ponytail up under the cap and neat and tidy we looked. After a while they changed the cap to plastic and it was almost universally hated. Then as you pointed out we were told they were only germ catchers anyway so we did not have to wear them. The advent of the white pantsuit felt like a get of jail card for some, negating looking to friends for replacement panty hose. I remember getting off shift and thinking blood was the least offensive fluid on my shoes and uniform. They all showed pretty well on the white uniform. The navy cape with red lining was worn mostly on night shift to be gradually replaced by a cardigan for the coolness of the wee small hours. For ceremonial events like graduation and Remembrance Day ceremonies the white uniform complete with white shoes, white cap with black band and Navy Cape with Red lining can be seen. The cape is expensive to make in the traditional serge and satin lining and the originals are getting harder to find. Oh sorry for the trip down memory lane. Yes here now too scrubs rule although some hospitals in an effort to show who actually is a Registered Nurse, as opposed to everyone else, have adopted black pants with a white tunic top and a visible RN badge. Also some areas like the ICU have their own colour scrubs like Navy. I am sure these things change from province to province and even within different facilities. Like I said your video was fun and informative, thanks!

I'm a Russian nurse+medical student and we are going through tough times nowadays . Your video taught me a lot, thank you so much!
If you want to learn more about Russian and Soviet nurses you may read about Dasha Sevastopol'skaya (or Dasha from Sevastopol) and about nurses during the Soviet part of WW2 (we call our part of war The Great Patriotic War, may it will be easier to find it that way). Those brave young women (most of them were like small and not super-strong) literally
dragged soldiers from the battlefield without help or stretcher only by their hands. Nothing to say, the often died with the soldiers they tried to save, and even if they were able to carry them
to the front-line hospital, they still needed either to take care about injured or to go back to the battlefield and carry another one. The amount of respect Russian (and all post-soviet) people have to the front-line nurses (and to any women who work or fraught) is unimaginable

I'm a nurse from Malaysia and I work in a non-profitable hospital in Penang. Although most nurses from private sectors are wearing scrubs/uniform and no nursing caps, my hospital and the government hospital are still maintaining the nursing cap because it signifies the profession. I have two types of uniform: a dress or blouse with trousers. But both are white. We differentiate nurses with different ranks and specialities by the colour of uniform and caps itself ( Caps with 1 or 2 blue lines, caps with doilies tips etc). But personally to me, I LOVE the uniforms of the era when petticoats and pleated dresses are a thing!

This was a really fun and informational watch! Thank you :) This might not be as interesting as some countries, but in the US, nurses also wear scrubs. Most hospitals have certain colors that are allowed, especially in surgery or on high-volume floors. The color sometimes correspond to the nurses' training, hospital wing, etc. Many facilities, especially out-patient and children's wards, allow bright colors and patterns, so as to cheer up the sick. Children love when their nurses are wearing barbie or dinosaur or spiderman themed scrubs. Surgical wards and rooms tend to have much more specific color and scrub style requirements because of the nature to keep everything as safe, sterile, and orderly as possible, and they are sometimes provided to surgeons by the hospital and disposed of later for very specific cases.

May 12th is also M.E/C.F.S and Fibromyalgia awareness day, it was chosen because it's Florence Nightengale's birthday as it was long believed that she may have suffered from one of them (though now there seems to be new evidence that it was a different chronic illness that kept her bedbound for years).

I am a Registered Nurse and I loved this video. I am so grateful we can wear scrubs today, but enjoyed the history lessons. I still like the idea of wearing white as is sets nurses apart and more importantly can be bleached which is sooo important. I can't imagine nursing in heels. Nurses in the US have been wearing pants and scrubs since the 70s, but became the norm in the late 80s and 90s.

There was a secondary arm of nursing during the First World War, called the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry. Their uniform was khaki, and the dresses had a slit at the back to allow for horse riding or motorcyle riding. However, they often wore steel helmets, and even cavalry jodphurs after it became apparent that they were much more practical. Their job was to collect injured soldiers from the front line or no man's land. At first, the British Government ignored their offer to help, so the FANY went to work for Belgium and France during the first two years of the war.
    - used to work for a military museum and give talks on military nursing

Here in Rural Nova Scotia, Canada at the hospital I work at (I am
a ward clerk & switchboard operator), most staff wear scrubs with certain certain colours for certain professions &/or departments. For example, before covid, nurses wore black pants with white tops, rehab services (occupational therapists & physio therapist) wear teal, and the rest of staff tend to wear scrubs of various other colours & patterns either in matched or unmatched sets. Only nurses in the operating room wear a cap/ hat while the rest do not.

Although she wasn't a nurse, my great-grandmother was a midwife and much in demand in country Australia in the late 1800's early 1900's, she would ride a horse or be fetched by husbands if they had a trap, to deliver healthy babies.
Her big secret was cleanliness. She washed her hands and equipment which no one but she was allowed to touch.

as someone who lives in extremely comfortable scrubs (I'm a student ODP: operating department practitioner at Addenbrookes hospital which was just featured on a series of the BBC programme Surgeons) I kinda wish our uniforms were still like this, I'm pretty jealous that in her twenties my nan got to walk the halls of her hospital with a blood cape on, and all I get is turquoise ill-fitting scrubs. how unfair!
ALSO we still use colours to indicate the rank or banding of our nurses, junior ward nurses often wear yellow belts or arm lapels, while senior staff wear navy belts and lapels. This is also used in theatre where we wear different coloured caps (white: support workers, blue: staff nurses, red: the most qualified nurse/practitioner in theatre, and the person in charge, yellow: all staff in training, green: junior scrub practitioners, pink: nurses new to the hospital, purple: all unqualified staff new to the hospital) and also our most senior staff i.e management, matrons etc where navy scrubs in the place of everyone else's turquoise scrubs )
Although scrubs are common they aren't very common when it comes to ward nurses, you'll see them in theatres or on obstetric wards where you may need to change more often due to fluid splashes etc, but onwards you'll see female nurses either wearing the same style dress and black tights that were common in the 90s or a tunic and trousers, male nurses still wear the high collared shirts. If you see a ward nurse wearings scrubs you can assume they have had a pretty nasty experience with some form of bodily fluid that day! :)
(I know this video is over a year old but I've just found it as for some reason this didn't come up on my subscribed feed :( but it is brilliant none the less, and me and all my colleagues are very thankful for your fun and educational video on a very important day! we would love if this got more people interested in the filed of nursing)

She told me lots of stories about her travels (much less about the actual nursing) but she was a badass and lifelong nurse who would go on to train other nurses and eventually help care for her husband who developed early Parkinson's and was the reason why they were able to stay living at home until the end of his life.

Military nurses had different outfits based on rank. It was either a thick black skirt and coat, resembling those of a sergeants and naval hat with the caduceus pin on it. There was also the white version of this, with shoulder straps to indicate rank and a black tie. The lowest was a greenish gray button down slip dress with a green side cap.

So im from mexico and this is how the nurses uniforms look like for one of the medical institution (i tried to put in here a picture but could not figure out how to do it so im going to have to describe it, i apologize in advance for my terrible grammar) so the nurses in there ussualy wear white scrubs/ button down shirt that can be short or long sleeved , and some female nurses can use either a skirt or trousers, this is paired with a green sweater all year long, and female nurses use a kind of mob cap, also sometimes male nurses can use a green tie. they are kind of classics and look unconfortable so i got respect for them because sadly we dont have a great medical system in here. have a great time

At the hospital that my father was a nurse at, everyone wore scrubs, from custodians to front desk staff. But the uniforms were color coded. Custodians wore aquamarine, and most nurses wore burgundy, front desk wore dark blue. The pediatric nurses wore light blue, but could switch out their scrub tops for cute patterns that the children liked.

My mum and mamma (grandma) were both nurses and they're in isolation together as they are both at risk groups. I'm really missing them right now, so thank you! My mamma gave me her nursing badges and belt, which are beautiful. My mamma wanted to be a nurse since she was little, but she was too young so a nurse she was friendly with spoke with the hospital and she worked in the cleaning rooms, boiling equipment and cleaning sheets and linen. She was only 16 when she trained as a nurse I believe. And then she specialised in nursing people with intellectual disabilities and developmental disabilities, so when I was born many years later, she was quick to pick up that I was autistic. She was eventually put forward to have tea with the queen for her nursing services and work, and I have her beautiful invitation. I love my mamma and I can't wait to see her again.

I recently saw a new Canadian opera about the tragedy of the Llandovery Castle: a hospital ship from Canada that was sunk by a German submarine during WW1. It was a horrific thing, with only 3 survivors. All of the nurses were drowned. The tragedy was used in a great deal of anti-German propaganda that depicted them as monsters drowning the brave, self sacrificing Canadian nurses.
