Just followed your video to change oil on my rx350. Your instructions were better than the pro mechanics, plus your calm methodical voice is exactly what we all needed to hear. I swear every time I hear Scotty screech I die a little inside.

The best oil change video for Lexus RX on youtube. The explanation is clear, and the camera is decent.

I'm watching this because I read that the dealers use the cheapest oil they can buy and sometimes skip replacing the gaskets, That was a truly excellent tutorial, your video gives me the confidence to do this on my own, the reset was much easier than anticipated, Thanks!

FYI, you forgot to detach old washer from oil pan. You put double washer. You use flat screw driver to take out easily. Also, side note of the Toyota type oil filter wrench to be getting stuck sometime due to your warm engine oil, use flat screw driver works the best. I do this for my 2013 IS and 2016 RX.

I noticed that also... all that fancy tools but forgot to remove old washer. Also draining filter cup for making less mess is not really true. I just partially unscrew the filter housing and let it drain then just remove it directly in oil catch pan. Watching this video seems that I make less mess by skipping using that drain hose.

Nice vid! Really helped me do the job. Thanks! Some comments from my experience.
8:24 and 10:45 The oil filter housing has 3 tabs on one side and 1 tab on the other (180 deg opposite) side; the oil filter housing socket has matching slots. Make sure to match them up because removal of the housing is next to impossible unless the housing and socket are exactly matched. As Rob noted, after most commercial oil changes the oil filter housing is way, WAY over-torqued, certainly much more than 18 ft.-lbs and removal can be a major PITA. I had to use a breaker bar to get enough leverage to start unscrewing it.
6:00 I attached some plastic tubing (from excess I had from lawn sprinkler work) to the provided plastic fitting to drain the oil filter housing. Adequate workaround if you don't have the metal fitting he uses.
4:40 and 5:55 About 20 years ago I started using oil drain plug valves on my vehicles and it's a nice feature that I don't have to get oil all over my hands any more when I remove the drain pan plug. On some types there's a "nipple" where plastic tubing can be attached to prevents drips (or wind spray as in this vid). Fumoto is a big brand but there are others out there. Drain plug valves are also fantastic if you over-fill the sump and have to remove just a little (you're correct in wondering how I know that, LOL).

The odd thing is that Motivx now make their oil filter removal socket so that it does NOT engage those tabs. On their Amazon listing for the MX2320 the images state "old style wrench can cause broken tabs" and "engages only the top fluted portion of the filter housing".

It is very useful and simple. I do not trust the servicemen for changing the oil. I have seen many different cases, like hitting my radiator for opening the oil filter for the Toyota that I had and not changing any oil and oil filter and claiming it is done.
    I prefer to it myself.

Awesome vid. One recommendation I would give is upgrade the oil filter housing to an aluminum one. I think yours is the plastic one? Those tend to crack, especially if you go to those express oil change places. They over torque it and crack the housing. Again, not required, just a nice upgrade! Keep up the great work!

Rob, I think you forgot to remove the crusher washer when you removed the drain plug. The washer gets stuck on the drain opening. This typically happens when I do an oil change on my wife’s RX350. A light tap with a flat tip screwdriver will remove it. However having doubles washers will not cause a leak. Just remember next time.

I don’t go longer than 8,000kms between oil changes. Our dealership has included free oil changes for life but based on 16,000km intervals….. so I’ll just do one myself between intervals.

Great video Rob! I watched video on your Tacoma oil change to learn the proper way to service a Toyota oil filter element. One thing I noticed lots of Toyota owners are using Mobil 1 advanced fuel economy 0w-20. How does your Lexus and Tacoma run on/like this oil?? I know Exxon/Mobil makes Toyota 0w-20.

Do you not take off the top engine oil cap before you drain the oil? Doesnt that allow the old oil to drain faster with air being sucked in as the old drains out?

I found them online via a service manual and also motivx site to confirm.
It should be the same across the board for Toyota/Lexus.
I would also consider the aluminum housing replacement for peace of mind

Rob how much for all the parts and to do the oil change for someone who needs to get all the stuff together to do the job.

What do you think? Do it myself ?...

    • @RobDaman
      @RobDaman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It's not a hard job and total parts would be close to that but you'll have the tools so your cost next time would be $30 ish.
      here's the list...
you need that oil filter wrench. The other 2 are nice to have too but not as critical.
      MotivX oil filter wrench goo.gl/hBwvMb
      oil drain tool goo.gl/4qE9YM

You can get the oil (5 qt) for about $22 plus tax at Walmart, $6-$15 for the oil filter if you’re vehicle uses more than 5 quarts buy it at Costco it’s $28 plus tax online right now. If you don’t have a jack you can get metal ramps for $44 from Harbor Freight or $39.99 plastic ones from Walmart, $15 for a drain pan although you can skip it and use an old cooking pan, $3 for a 9/16 socket, $10 for a wrench, $15 for the funnel used in the video about $3 for a normal funnel. $6 for a similar (Pennzoil) oil filter socket from O’Reilly. I don’t know what tools you may have as you may not need to purchase all of these if you have some tools. I would say do it yourself you only have to pay for the tools once and you’ll always have them. After that your oil changes will cost dramatically less. Also if you don’t feel comfortable you can always take it to a Toyota dealer they will use the same parts and oil as a Lexus dealer but will charge you much less.

Hey man, is that a stuck crush washer on the pan? or it is part of the oil pan? My new Lexus oil pan looks like yours. but when I removed the drain plug, there is no crush washer from the factory. Now I am not sure if it is stuck on the pan or that's the mouth of the drain hole.

Robert question.I went on the link to buy those car ramps you have because I love them over the plastic unsafe ones. They finally got back to me and I saw the price as 65.00 each on the website. Now they want to sell them to me for 128.00 a piece because they are in Canada? My question is did they rip you off like that in price?Im willing to pay 130.00 for the pair but not 256 for the pair.
