    I've had to adopt the kitchen as my new work area, more because of who I am and my house layout (coffee machine and lots of light in the morning to stop me nodding off) so rather than move my main machine down I went with a super cheap KVM, and two screens to add to my personal and work laptops (personal is work, but not the main job) It took a little getting used to the idea of swapping just mouse and keyboard between machines but now I love it.
    Just an alternative way of doing it, I have both side by side as big panorama and it's pretty fun.

    Funny, I did almost every one of these over the last couple years (butcher block top, cam link, decent chair.) I will say I went down the rabbit hole on sit/stand desks and I would say to skip it altogether, at least to start. After trying twice with two different sets of very expensive legs, I wasn’t getting the stability I wanted, and I got tired of the wobbly vision which was only made worse by articulating arms. In the end I went with a custom-made 80-20 desk. They’ll put a frame together to your specs, so you get the leg room, wire management, and other features you want. And, if I ever want, I can go back to them and ask them to design a lifting system for the desk. It wasn’t cheap, but taking it in stages, it was cheaper initially than my sit/stand desks, and the quality and stability have been miles ahead. Also, I’m a woodworker; go ahead and drill between the pieces on butcher block, it’s fine. I opted to avoid drilling altogether with a stand that sits atop the desk, and I had a clamp-based mount that worked well before too.

    What would you guys recommend microphone-wise? Also, awesome idea about using the USB capture "card", to use a still image camera's video capabilities, or camcorder as a web cam. Lastly, it is very possible to use both a KVM and a USB switch at the same desk, even without buying a new KVM. I use both at the same time with the four computers I use in one room. Works great.

Fast VPN solutions (like wireguard, ipsec) , fast and cheap/free remote control solutions (nomachine, AnyDesk, teamvievwer, VNC), full remote access - IPMI based vs AMT based vs (maybe) Kvm over IP vs DIY kvm (rpi0(mouse, keyboard) + rpi4 connected to camlink/fake-camlink and power/reset pins on pc). It's interesting, here in the Nordics at least, it would seem that working from home actually has result in higher efficiency, and that's on top of having kids and stuff around.
    I would never have guessed that.
    Sure, we have seen an increase in work related physical issues, due to bad posture and stuff like that, but really, most of it probably isn't really an increase, but rather the result of people not having the option to get treatment for some time, and in any case, I suspect people will learn relatively quickly, and likewise, as people will presumably start working more from home, not because they have to, but because the workplace requires it, the workplace will most likely start offering the same help with such things, as is the case at the office.
    Again, I'd never have guessed we'd see this development.

    besides dualboot you can just create a separate user profile for work purposes on private pc.
    I myself have a corporate laptop that I use with a 7port USB hub.
    On my desk with my game/workstation I just plug in the usb.
    My laptop sits on a laptop stand in front of my 2nd screen that i now don't use much.

    for when I was working from home before getting laid off. I ended up installing a VM of windows 10 on Virtual Box and that seemed to do a good job of Isolating their Spyware Crap from my system. but I'm not sure if other software would be unhappy about being installed on a VM.

    • @metaphysicalfuck
      @metaphysicalfuck 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      From the years I've worked from home and isolated work crap that way, the thing vm do bad is asynchronous (or was in synchronous?) USB signals, such as the webcam. I was absolutely unable to use a webcam on virtual box, whereas vmware at least managed in USB 2.0 connection. Other than that, the machine has its own kernel so you have no iasues
      That being said, if you want a vm it's because you want a distraction, no excuse not to dual boot. I know that's my case lol
