I bought a Sonare SF-7000 as a sophomore in high school and am still playing it ten years later. This is spec-equivalent to 705, but before the line was renumbered. It has served me well in high school wind ensemble, university symphonic band, and now I even get paid to play it! (church gigs and middle school flute teaching). Happy customer.
I would be interested in hearing a comparison & explanation between a Powell Sonare 705, a Powell Signature, and a Powell conservatory model. Or a comparison between the Sonare 705 and whatever pro flute you play on. I wonder what specifically I'd get out of an upgrade. I love being able to get the big "moody" sound. I've always loved the over-dramatic adagio. My main focus is playing in church. I want people to be moved by a musically masterful rendering of Amazing Grace. I'm not trying to set any world speed records for Flight of the Bumblebee.
I played a Sonaré throughout high school and it was my favorite! I've played on an intermediate Yamaha and a Jupiter but both did not compare to it. Currently saving up and hoping to eventually get one of my own. 🤞🏽
Joanna... I just wanted to share an awful awful anecdote that happened yesterday. I had just finished practicing, when after an hour or so, I decided to keep my recorders (you already know I play the recorder haha) but I found the most awful thing ever. It still devastates me to think about it, the image, the feeling, the pang. My precious precious precious boxwood moeck alto that's 20 years old, and NOT MINE, was chewed up, scratched, chunks of wood, chunks of the bell, beak, labium, on the floor. My dog chewed it up. It's my fault for leaving the door open. It was absolutely destroyed. So now I have to break the news to my professor who owns it, and buy him a new recorder for FOUR FIFTY DOLLARS. and im just a poor teenager huhu
I bought several fine recorders at the NY Flute center and had an old recorder repaired and revoiced by their technicians. World class products and services!!
I am currently renting that exact same model of Sonare 501, and I'm in love. I am an advancing beginner, and the headjoint is beautiful - I love the embouchure hole - it allows me to play the notes wonderfully in any octave. The keys are amazing. The 3rd octave E is easily accessible, and sometimes the F# sounds clean. I plan on buying it!
I play the sonare 505 which is basically the same thing as 501 except without the y key stuff, and I have to say it's been su h an amazing flute to me.
I play the sonare 705 with a lefreque Added. It has changed my playing. I majored in music in college and played on a student SH gemiengemeinhardt flute all during my college. It was unfortunately all I could afford. It was like playing a brick and actually caused my physical pain. A couple of years ago I got my Powell. I was willing to spend much more but since like you said I don't have a big lung capacity. This flute let me sing. The mechanisms were fluid and sound rich enough for me. I currently only play in a local community band and don't need a lot of color enhancements that a professional flute would bring. On the contrary. It would effect the sound of the band. If I were in an orchestra then I probably would elect for a more colorful tone quality. The lefreque help amplify and balance the intonation of the flute. I love what it does to it. My style of sound may not be to everyone else liking but works for my needs. The price was certifiably right too. I highly recommend the Powell sonare 705 it's a great value. I've played 24k$ flutes and gold and all types. They were just not for me and my needs. I think finding the right flute for you is like buying a car. It's what ever fits your budget needs and style.
Cool selection, I have read/drooled over both of those and wondered if there was a big difference, but the 705 seems like the clear winner once you started with the color and dynamics. Future review requests would be Yamaha professional options or student calibre flute battles.
You should ask to try the Powell Sonare-705 w/ 9k aurumite headjoint, simply beautiful. That's just me but I feel like the colors are more present, and it's just amazing. Try it sometime if you can. As for the piccolo, try out the Powell Sonare also.
Thank you! I asked you a question about step up flutes a while back and I think you answered all my concerns. I wasn't sure what a step up flute was or what it actually did for your playing - now I see! I got an Azumi AZ3 pretty much by accident a couple of years ago. I have been trying out other flutes because I have some money to buy my "last flute" - I'm never going professional - but I wasn't sure what I should be looking for. Now that I know, even if I got that AZ3 by accident, I see that it DOES work for me better than my student Gemeinhardt and I will keep it for now! If I do buy another flute when I am a better player, I now know more about how to choose it. My AZ3 also has a gizmo key! This was the first time I was told what that key was actually for! Thank you for that too!
So I am trialing the 705 w/ the Auromite headjoint just beautiful resonance! I am not flooding my flute with tons of air typically and I get a big colorful sound w/ vibrato. My only complaint is how heavy it feels. I reordered the 705 w/o the splitE/ C sharp trill to see if its lighter at all… I also am trialing a Haynes q2 Love this one too!! Its effortless to reach high register and the mechanism is so very smooth. Its a VERY hard choice!!! Ugghh very polar opposite flutes IMO
Hey Joanna, Could you please do a video on maintenance for wooden piccolos? I have seen your wooden piccolo and wanted to know what you do to keep the instrument from cracking or anything else, thanks!
does the aurumite 9k lip plate add more tone color and dynamics to the powell sonare 501 and505. I am 63 years old and I would love to up grade my 1993 armstrong 104 flute.I originally was looking at the 601 c foot.I liked that it was very free blowing for my age, and if god willing, I would like to play flute for many more years. Is the aurumite 9k head joint free blowing .Also is this head joint plated thanks
Can you please do the 705 with the arumite headjoint? I've been looking at it for quite a while and I was wondering how well the headjoint affected the sound.
Hey I'm actually thinking about purchasing a piccolo in the near future and for some reason am leaning toward the Powell Sonare piccolo. I really enjoy your videos! :-)
hi, watched many of your flute review videos and all that I can say is. with the 705 flute you were able to hit the octaves very easily with much less breath than just about every flute you tested, very easy to play. just a observation.
Can you please review the Di Zhao intermediate flutes and the trevor james intermediate flutes? It would be so awesome! I'm looking for an upgrade and these are the brands I'm interested in. Thanks!💕
I got my own flute about 4 or 5 mouths ago and I am going to take it somewhere to I grave my name in the body of the flat do you think that's ok? Btw if your wondering I'm in advances/band
Piccolo questions? Okay! All wood vs wood body - silver head vs all silver. How about pads? I have an old Emerson (real Emerson, before he sold out) grenadilla Boston Legacy fitted with cork pads. Also a Gemeinhart 4SPH conical bore solid silver head, love the sound! Plus, while we're at it - differences in cylindrical bore/conical bore!
I prefer the second one only because I feel like to me it has more variety of tone colors but the first one I like because it has a big sound. Both of those flutes I feel play better than my old flute which is a Gemeinhardt 3OSB which I got in 2010 before the Gemeinhardt line was overhauled in 2012.
Nice review.. I am also playing powell and powell is great really.. Also Great to hear that you are reviewing piccolo. I am planning to purchase piccolo and I am particularly interested to see the difference between sterling piccolo and grenadilla piccolo.. It would be nice if you would compare and review them..
Ahhh! I have a powell sonare 501! I really love my flute so I was excited to see your opinion on it. I've had mine for 2ish years now and when I finally stepped up to this flute I also felt like it was very "free flowing" which was such a nice difference from my crappy beginner flute haha. Anyways, love your videos!
Hi! I'm a beginner/almost-intermediate flutist, I think, and I've heard that my breathing is too loud while playing. Do you, or anyone, really, have any tips for that? The other flutists in my section don't seem to breathe as loud as me.
Hahaha, thank you!! I'm so tickled that you guys are taking the time to notice the subscriber count on my channel! And so very happy to see our little nerdy musician family grow ❤
I'VE tried and tried , but I can't here the difference between the 501 and 705 and if anything, the there is point in the playing where the 501 sounds mellower
I spoke to Haynes flutes at one point about my flute at the time that had pointed keys but covered holes. They claim that pointed keys means French model not the open holes. Do you feel differently?
Hi, I was wondering if you could do a review on James Trevor's flute (example: Privilége,cantable) because for step up/ intermediate flutes, they are much cheaper than the Powell flutes. Thank you 😊

Do you have any suggestions as far as makes and models and where to get them from?
YES I've been waiting for a piccolo video on your channel!!!! I think it's a great idea that your doing these review videos and it gives me a lot of info!! I am a student in high school and I've wanted to play piccolo for a while now and I've played on a school one but I kinda wanted my own piccolo. I've been looking into piccolos and it would be really helpful if you did a review on the pearl pfp 105 made of grenaditte or maybe a gemeinhart or Jupiter piccolo. Thanks!!!
JustAnotherFlutist REALLY! Anime is awesome. Theres a flute solo competition at my school in May and i'm probably going to do something anime. Also thanks for replying. :p
Could you do a video about managing musical groups? In my case, I am a principal chair, pit orchestra director, private flute teacher, flute choir director, and composer. Sometimes it's overwhelming to have all these responsibilities, and when I begin to get a bit on edge the group thinks that I think they aren't doing well and as a result, we sound meh. I would really appreciate some advice on how to juggle everything without crashing.
Ohhh, yes, I'll definitely add this on the list! I'll first say here that it's important to be open with your groups and let them know when you're feeling tired (you don't need to explain more than that--people just need to know your current state of being). That way, they won't take things too personally. It's all about open communication!
hi miss, i like your youtube. i m concertist ane have very expensive flute... i m looking for all silver flute with very good mecanism. for second hand ... but efficient for budget inf. 3000$, no more. what is your advice? powell, azumi, pearl, trevor, sankyo?else?
i know right im so happy and i can make a good sounf with a nice pitch its awsome but the foot seens to not be going in its facing the right way but it wont go in
awesome review! Quick unrelated question tho. What do you do after being bedridden for a few days and come back to a shitty tone? (sorry about that word, but it's the truth it's absolute crap) Because even knowing that 'that' was going to happen seeing exactly how bad it got was really discouraging. Especially after I've made all this progress that just went to... let's say it went somewhere toilet adjacent. So my question for you is what do you do mentally after a short hiatus? Considering I don't play the flute or really any wind instrument. But I guess some of your viewers would enjoy what you do practically after a hiatus with your flute... embouchure exercises I imagine (learn that word in your channel 😂)
Thank you, come on google translator to answer you out, what I said the comment was a joke, I said, "sends a flute for me" but was playing even thank you so love your videos, I'm from Brazil💕💖💘💝

I just got my 705 today with a gold lip plate and i just turned 14, i love it and im auditioning for the byso!
Ari Kiirikki is the 9k aurumite golf plate more of a rose gold color or standard gold
Thanks for your very informative review! Im going to try out both flutes tomorrow plus the 9k rose gold headjoint version.
I bought several fine recorders at the NY Flute center and had an old recorder repaired and revoiced by their technicians. World class products and services!!

Omg,I think it's so cool that on the head joint "VQP" is engraved into the silver."Vincent Qui Patir",which means "He who conquers endures"
Shoot I feel so stupid now.But whatever I found something new that I'm proud of
They're just the initials of the founder, Verne Q Powell

'this is a FLUTE' 😂
DarlingViolist 😂😂😂
So close! I have a Sonare 601 which I love, having moved up from a Gemeinhardt 2SP

+Karenonflute You're absolutely welcome! I'm so happy that I was of help! 😊
HAPPY 20,000 SUBSCRIBERS!!! For your next episode could you tell us some of your favorite flute videos/channels on TH-cam?
Thank you!!! Hahahaha, you guys are so great for taking the time to notice ❤ It's so awesome to watch our little nerdy musician family grow!
JustAnotherFlutist and Powell Sonare 5000
can you make a video where you just play some songs on your flute?
Yeah
Oh
that would be sooooo COOL
Jessica Jiang idk if you've figured this out by now but she has another channel for that
Nikki Ta which one?

I just bought a 501. I Fucking love the thing. it's amazing.
+RememberPluto Aw yeah! Congrats!!

Hey I'm actually thinking about purchasing a piccolo in the near future and for some reason am leaning toward the Powell Sonare piccolo. I really enjoy your videos! :-)

Ohhhhhh, I hadn't thought of these yet! Thank you, added to the list!
+JustAnotherFlutist Yay!!
I tried an Azumi and liked it, You should try that one also
+Jazmin Flores I'll consider it, thanks!
You should review pearl flutes! I've been meaning to get the 795 elegante one but I don't know if it's worth!
I play on the Powell sonarè 705 with an aurumite head joint!! I'm curious what you think of those head joints! :)
Antonio Rion is the aurumite lip plate a rose gold color or standard gold color
Delightful, as always.
Do they have something like FCNY for clarinets or saxophones (my instruments 😁)?
I got my own flute about 4 or 5 mouths ago and I am going to take it somewhere to I grave my name in the body of the flat do you think that's ok? Btw if your wondering I'm in advances/band
I don't know why but I love to watch these videos while practicing bassoon hahaha
+Narcariel Douma LOLLLL! Random flute knowledge never hurt anybody... 😉 #productiveprocrastinator
Piccolo questions? Okay! All wood vs wood body - silver head vs all silver. How about pads? I have an old Emerson (real Emerson, before he sold out) grenadilla Boston Legacy fitted with cork pads. Just realized that you have a monument valley totem plushy :DDDD
ISN'T HE THE CUTEST
YIS :333
also I love these flute reviews, I'm looking for a step-up so I'm trekking all over the internet for comparisons and stuff :P

Could you maybe review Hammig, Powell, or Burkart piccolos? I'm looking to get a upgrade for a piccolo :)
All amazing piccolos! I'll add them to the list!
Hi, I really appreciate your reviews. Any chance you could review some mid level Yamaha flutes? Or alto flutes? Thanks!
hey i just got my flute im so happy
Hurray!
Have you ever tried a Azumi or Altus flute ? I think it would be a good " battle " between American and Japanese flutes!
+Sarah Potts Thank you! And yes!! The 501 is such a beautiful step-up flute!
Hi! I'm a beginner/almost-intermediate flutist, I think, and I've heard that my breathing is too loud while playing. Do you, or anyone, really, have any tips for that? The other flutists in my section don't seem to breathe as loud as me.
+Mary Anne I made a video about "Flute Breathing," which you might find helpful! 😊
Great job on almost 20,000 subs keep it up and thanks for the extra flute help at home. You saved my flute with the extra instructions bye
Would sterling silver key cups make any difference to the sound?
Hi, I was wondering if you could do a review on James Trevor's flute (example: Privilége,cantable) because for step up/ intermediate flutes, they are much cheaper than the Powell flutes. Thank you 😊
does the square cut headjoint play better than the oval cut headjoint?
What model flute is YOUR intermediate flute?
Did you know that if you use your pinky finger to press the B key and the C key on the foot joint it will act the same as a Gizmo?
BroulfLeFlautist this is what James Galway does. He uses flutes that do not have a gizmo.
The square lip hole is like Azumi/Altus then?
Hi. I've been playing the flute for a couple of years, but I want to get a new one. I have been looking at many of your reviews and wanted to know which flute, in your opinion, is the best to buy.
i have a yamaha 461. i wish i could buy the powell 705 though
Maybe you could review some yamaha or jupiter piccolos? and the difference between wooden and nickel/silver headjoints?? :D
+Amanda Reade Ohhh, I like your idea of comparing wooden/silver headjoints! Also adding those brands on the list!
thanks!! :))
P. HAMMIG! Haha. or the Powell Sonare PS-750 (just because it is such a different intermediate instrument with the stainless steel mech.)
Pearl piccolo!
Please do a video like this for beginner flutes
+eldavison1 Already did! Click the "i" in the top right corner of the video, and you'll see the last review video I made about beginner model flutes!
O sorry I didn't noticed the link thanks :)
I love your videos, you seem really experienced and I was wondering if you could help me find the right flute for me, i am looking for an intermediate level flute with an offset g key with a b foot, good quality but AFFORDABLE, up until now I played on my moms old student level flute, but due to its age and poor treatment over the past 30+ years it is now broken and I would rather just use the money on a better flute than to repair one that is no longer allowing me to grow. Do you have any suggestions as far as makes and models and where to get them from?
Thank you so much for this video because im soon gonna get a Sonare 705.😊
Don't forget to use my code "JAF" to get your perks!!!! And enjoy it, it's a really beautiful flute!
Thank you😊
Your videos are awesome!
Thank you, thank you & thank you so much 🇱🇰
I'd love to see you review some Gemeinhardt or Jupiter piccolos!
Thanks!!!
+Michael Hung Fantastic suggestions! Added to the list! And I'm so glad these videos help! I've wanted to make these videos for so long too!
I noticed that you have lipstick doesn't that damage the plating,my brother had only chapstick and ruined the coating
I got my flute a week ago! I'm really excited (I'm a 7th grader). Any advice for a beginner?
Always practice what's hardest the most instead of what's easiest! You'll improve a lot faster this way! ;)
And congrats!! Happy fluting!! :D
+anime nerd 3rdly, I also love anime ;)
JustAnotherFlutist REALLY! Anime is awesome. Theres a flute solo competition at my school in May and i'm probably going to do something anime. Also thanks for replying. :p

hi miss, i like your youtube.
i m concertist ane have very expensive flute...
i m looking for all silver flute with very good mecanism.
for second hand ... but efficient
for budget inf. 3000$, no more.
what is your advice? powell, azumi, pearl, trevor, sankyo?else?
thankss
I'd love to be able to do this for clarinets. But I found this video very informative thank you :)
+CuriousMusician Are you a clarinettist? Just start with reviewing your own clarinet(s)!! That's how I got started 😊
Yes I am, I play clarinet sax as my main instruments but I can play others. That's a good idea thank you, I love your videos so much!!
Great review! Hey for piccolo reviews you should totally consider Di Zhao ones
+Vee Cruz Definitely! So many people have requested the Di Zhao that now I'm super curious myself!
What are your thoughts on Muramatsu flutes?
onde você conseguiu esse exercisio?
Hi!!! Can you pleaseeeee try Yamaha FLUTE and PICCOLO? I'm looking for an intermediate instrument
Awesome, will add to the list!
Thank youuuu !!!
I love your review videos so much omg
+60darklord Aw, thanks!!
Hi Jo
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS AND I'M ALSO A FLUTE NERD
I would like to see you review HAMMIG Piccolos
what flute would you recommend for someone who has study with a yamaha model in a small school band?
+jcypeaches32 Something like the step-up flute (the 501) in this video! 😊
Can you do the Resona 300?
Review the Yamaha Intermediate models please :)
Would you recommend this flute or a gemeinhardt?
Depends on the level of the flute and what level you're playing at! Always remember, the flute chooses the flutist, not the other way around ;)
Your flute review videos are so interesing!! If you could you please do a review on the resona by burkart picc vs the guo grenaditte picc? I
what intermediate flute was the non powell sonare flute?
A Mateki.
Wow 20009 sub!!! Congrats!

501 Good!
awesome review!
Can you make reviews of open hole flutes plz😊

0:08 but if you only review flutes that you like... then what's the point of a review? that's supposed to be somewhat subjective...
