Sohail Hashmi: Civilisation is not frozen in time. Other cultures enriched India.

  • "Civilisation is not frozen in time. The narrative that we Indians have not borrowed any thing from other cultures and civilisations is absolutely false. The historical fact is that various assimilations of food, clothing, knowledge, architecture and cultures have enriched our own culture," argues Delhi-based historian, Sohail Hashmi in a conversation with Pervaiz Alam.
    Sohail Hashmi is known for conducting heritage walks in Delhi and around. During one of his heritage walks in Tughlakabad, Delhi, he spoke about 'Hindostan Ki Kahani' - a series of short films- he has been presenting in the digital space.
    Discussing his series, Sohali Hashmi says, "A debate is raging in India about who is an Indian and who is not. What constitutes Indian food, language, music, Hindu architecture and Muslims architecture. The ongoing debate is political in nature with an aim to create divisions among people, and has no scholarly or academic basis. However, my series looks at this debate with a historical and academic perspective.
    'Hindostan Ki Kahani' is available on Anhad Media's TH-cam page.
    The interview with Sohail Hashmi was recorded on 30 January, 2019, in New Delhi.

      No, not at all. You got it all wrong. He's saying foreigners introduced new fruits/veggies/architecture/culture/customs and the same foreigners too back a slice of India - India's knowledge/food/culture etc. This happens all over the world. This is how it has happened in every country. Do you have another theory?

    which is happening in India dividing people and architecture and many other aspects. History, culture and lives are getting distorted.
    Babri Masjid and many other Mosques, temples, forts, gardens, bridges, markets, old sites of interest like Durgahs, saraye, and old highways. are all our rich HERITAGE..In European countries they preserve it like treasures , Aur India may they just want to target to break, feel jealous, EERSHA, and want it gone!! SOOCHO. BABRI MASJID WAS A NISHHANI OF OUR HISTORICAL ARCHITECTURE. So Also the statues of Buddha of Bamiyaan..... Afsoos.

Someone needs to quantify i.e. contribution vs damage the middle eastern invaders brought to this land apart from certain food and architecture aspects, what about destroying temples ,barbarism and forced conversions . You need to read a lot, Sir. We all acknowledge how Hindu scholars such as Aryabhata, Kanada, Varahmihir, Brahmgupta, Charaka, and Sushruta contributed in the advancement of Science and Technology, followed by modern Indian scientists who went on to win noble prizes. Let's be proud of their achievements. However, you seem to ignore the fact that Muslims have also contributed immensely in all fields. Surprisingly, you have no idea how Muslim scholars borrowed so many new ideas from the Hindu scholars.
      Just read an excerpt from an article by Keith Devlin in The Guardian, a respected newspaper in London:
      Today, mention of the word Islam can, to some, conjure up images of terrorists flying planes full of people into buildings, all in the name, they say, of God.
      In an equally sad vein, the word Baghdad brings to mind Saddam Hussein. Both images are as unrepresentative as they are understandable, a sad reflection on the ease with which a handful of fanatics can hijack not just a plane but an entire cultural heritage and its associated religion.
      For those of us in mathematics, the sadness is even greater. For the culture that these fanatics claim to represent when they set about trying to destroy the modern world of science and technology was, in fact, the cradle in which that tradition was nurtured.
      For all present-day mathematicians and scientists are children of Islam.
      Early in the 9th century, the Abbasid caliphs adopted a deliberate approach to the cultural and intellectual growth of the empire. They established the House of Wisdom, an academy of science, and gathered manuscripts in Greek and Sanskrit, and scholars who could understand them.
      Important Greek and Indian mathematical books were translated and studied, leading to a new era of scientific creativity that was to last until the 14th century. One of the first Greek texts translated was Euclid's classic geometry text Elements.
      This had a huge impact; Arabic mathematicians then adopted a very Greek approach, formulating theorems precisely and proving them formally in Euclid's style. Like Greek mathematics, which was defined more by the common language in which it was written and carried out than the nationality of the practitioners, Arabic mathematics was determined largely by the common use of Arabic by scholars of many nationalities, spread throughout the Islamic Empire.
      One of the earliest and most distinguished of the Arabic mathematicians was the 9th century scholar Abu Ja'far Mohammed ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi, an astronomer to the caliph at Baghdad. His full name can be translated as "Father of Ja'far, Mohammed, son of Moses, native of the town of Al-Khwarizmi".
      Al-Khwarizmi wrote several enormously influential books. One, in particular, describes how to write numbers and compute with them using the place-value decimal system we use today, which had been developed in India some time before 600 AD.
      This book would, when translated into Latin 300 years later, prove a major source for Europeans who wanted to learn the new system. Today, we know it as the Hindu-Arabic system. It is taught to schoolchildren worldwide.
      Many translations of the book began with the phrase " dixit Algorismi " ("so says Al-Khwarizmi"), a practice that led to the adoption in medieval times of the term "algorism" to refer to the process of computing with the Hindu-Arabic numerals.
      "Algorithm" is an obvious derivation. Another of Al- Khwarizmi's manuscripts was called Kitab al jabr w'al-muqabala , which translates roughly as "restoration and compensation".
      And, this is how Algebra came into being. Here's the link: www.theguardian.com/science/2002/sep/05/research.science2

      Yes, some of them. Please do read on the origin of various vegetables and fruits on the net. Sir, world's knowledge is in your domain. You must find a credible website. You don't have to believe the politically motivated hand outs.
      Look what we found on the net: Spices and herbs (e.g., black pepper, cinnamon, turmeric, cardamom) have been used by Indians for thousands of years for both culinary and health purposes. Spices indigenous to India (e.g. cardamom and turmeric) were cultivated as early as the 8th century BC in the gardens of Babylon (Sinha, 2003; Tapsell, 2006).
      Susruta, an ancient surgeon (around 4th century BC) used white mustard and other aromatic plants in bed sheets to ward off malignant spirits. He also applied a poultice from sesame to post operation wounds which may have acted as an antiseptic.
      Medical writings of Charaka (1st century) and Susruta II (2nd century) referenced spices and herbs. Susruta II also used spices and herbs such as cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, turmeric, and pepper for healing purposes. Spices such as cardamom, ginger, black pepper, cumin, and mustard seed were included in ancient herbal medicines for different types of health benefits. In Ayurvedic medicine, spices such as cloves and cardamom were wrapped in betel-nut leaves and chewed after meals to increase the flow of saliva and aid digestion.

      Jeera, cumin, and Shah zeera, though common now, came from the middle East and Egypt. Kalounji from Iran and Turkey. Green chilly, tomato, potato, are new world crops discovered by the Portugese in 15th century and brought to Europe which colonists brought to india. Hindus dont add these to sattvic food. I think India only had ginger, haldi, pepper and rai or sarso, plys numerous spices like jakhia, unknown in North India now. Population migrations brought the other spices to the subcontinent. Hing came from middle east. so too tez patta, almonds, kishmish, saffron, gulkand. Roses themselves are Persian.

      Ignorant bigoted Indians think a Muslim must be lying. Hindus had a phobia of iron tools touching clothing. the needle was polluting. so only unstitched clothes were used. even now in ritual dress Hindus use unstitched clothes. If you want to verify the veggies list read a Hindu writer Mohan Rao. My only doubt is about the pumpkin, kumra. there's no doubt about the gifts of South America to the world in the form of potatoes, tomatoes, chillies and capsicum. your Naan, tandoori roti, Chhole bature come from Afghanistan - visit the IITF sometime and see for yourself. Origin of Apples is Kazakhistan. Cherries and peaches from Iran. read Babar - nama. Khubani, Alu Bukhara are obviously from his birthplace in Fergana, Uzbekistan.

    before Buddhist rulers like Ashoka Hindus and particularly Vedic Brahmins ate beef. read Aitariya Brahmana where Vedic lawmaker Yagyavalkya wins a debate in the court of Raja Janak. he is gifted the 1000 cows promised to him. when Janak expresses his anxiety about the cows' fate, Yagyavalkya says: I know I shouldn't (eat them). But if the flesh is tender, I will." Beef was the best flesh to be offered to Gods, Brahmins and guests in the Vedas. ignorant Hindu mobs now lynch people on suspicion of using beef of food. our elected heroes go abroad and hug confirmed beef eaters like Obama, Trump, Abe, Macron, Lula, the list is too long. For vegetarians, read Amarakosha, a catalogue of things which also lists common Indian vegetables in Buddhist times such as the patol, various gourds, sweet potato, rice and barley. Wheat btw, comes from Ethiopia and the Middle East. Tea from China. eithet we want to remain ignorant or we study a bit before insulting genuine scholars.

    What’s the point of this interview? Trying so hard to prove that one should not be proud of their civilization, Indian civilization, whatever way people express it. The world DOES NOT acknowledge Indian civilization or India. For the most part. For the common western junta, India is the land of snake charmers, IT and bothersome call centers. Being ruled by outsiders who settled in India but trace their roots somewhere else and remain segregated, they will take several generations to really be integrated into the concept of a nation state. In a world of nation states, everyone needs a a thought to feel proud of themselves. Everything in this world, every thought is borrowed. What is really original? The most popular Italian food is all borrowed; poor Italians don’t feel proud of who you are as we are going to do another vlog with this dude! Maybe we should go back and find out that those same borrowed concepts were borrowed from India. Giving Indians a reality check, eh? Integrate Mr. Historian, not segregate thoughts.

    • @CINEINK
      @CINEINK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rajiv Bhai, the point is simple; Sohail Hashmi is responding to those who have suddenly discovered a puritanical streak to outcast XYZ from the Indian culture/Indian history. They have reduced the argument to this - What's Indian and what's not Indian. Some of them have started purging Urdu words from Hindi calling them foreign influences. He's integrating them by saying hey you can't even make out what's Indian and what's not. So, stop this nonsense.
      Sometimes, we interview people who are in the news. Find more about his series on the net.

    • @rajivsinha7224
      @rajivsinha7224 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hope when you replied “stop this nonsense”, it was a generic comment for those who pursue puritanical BS. Just to be clear what I commented is not nonsense.
      The question I raise is to highlight the fallacies about countering statements from the uneducated, by someone who has facts and figures on his fingertips and portrayed as learned and Mr. Historian. Everyone is searching for an identity; what is the Indian identity? It’s certainly not the puritanical BS, or the borrowed one as implied by Mr. Historian, but the amalgamation of 7000 year inhabited history. Indian food is spicy not because of the red chilies, but the spices in it which the western world cane looking for in the 1600s. So say it as it is. India is richer for its diversity, and diversity is the new spice which enriches is as who we are.

    • @CINEINK
      @CINEINK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Couldn't agree with you more. Diversity is India's strength. The outcome of that ancient civilisation with its great diversity is great music, great culture, great cuisine and great architecture!

      I don't understand as to why the PK Muslims are so sick and hate Islam and Muslims. Why do foundations of PK consist of lies, more lies, cowardice, hypocrisy??? Why did they have their Qaid who was a pork eating, wine drinking anti religious man his entire life, whose only daughter married a non muslim, had non muslim children, never even stepped in Pakistan (except for India/Pakistan match some fifty years later) and lived her life in India. Why did Pakistanis hate muslims so much that they killed almost 3 million Muslims in Bangladesh considering Bengalis as black, lowly people from low lying areas, and raped 200,000 women within a few months so that there could come out newer breed of non Bengalis out of these Bengali Muslims? Why have they always hated the Muhajirs so much that they killed and maimed entire Karachi for years on? Why do they hate the Baloch Muslims so much that they consider entire Balochistan as a rebellious region and killed the Bughtis and other Baloch to this day?? Why do they hate the Pakhtuns so much that they still consider them to be traitors and hence want to kill the PTM?? Why do you hate the Sindhi Muslims so much that you don't even consider them to be functional muslims not worthy of anything except being animals good enough to be kept as slaves???
      And finally why do you hate the Kashmiri Muslims so much that the only time you are energized is when the Kashmiris are killed, raped, murdered?? It seems as if you are so happy when tragedy strikes them that entire Pakistan goes into a frenzy. It seems you wait for such tragedy to take place because this is the only way in which your impotent paki army can sell out the blood, tears, respect, honour, and soul of the Kashmiris in return of some pennies that you can get out of the West. The paki army is at best a mercenary army to collect some bheek from the West in lieu of the blood, tears, honour and soul of the Muslims everywhere around the world and in Pakistan too like they did in Waziristan (Zarb-e-azb) and at worst they are a dispecable cowards exactly like the Sanghis in India.
      My brother in Islam, why are the Pakistanis such haters of Muslims and why have they always used, misused, abused, disabused Islam to get bheek from anywhere and everywhere exactly as the Sanghis in India do with Hinduism??? Why do you hate Islam so much exactly as the Sanghis hate religion in general and Islam/Hinduism in particular?? What let's you as a nation and as a people to be such parasite upon the muslims of your own country and Muslims everywhere around the world exactly as the Sanghis are parasites upon the Indians??
      What is it that makes you so sick, wretched, mean and disgusting exactly like the Sanghis??

      The criticism that you've received from two opposing directions is evidence of your neutrality @@CINEINK Kuchh log decide nahi kar paa rahein hain ki aap kis taraf ho. I was able to find you because of the Author of Military Inc. She had been mentioned by Tahir Gora so I had to look her up to find this channel. Then I saw that interview of Owais that you had chosen to conduct in front of Jama Masjid. Sohail is a freaking legend I've been following him for a while no one else can inform you about culture, food and architecture as passionately as he does. I had also noticed Yogendra Yadav in one of your videos. Is that you whispering the name of the channel in the beginning of the video?
      P.S.: I'm going to save you the trouble of pasting the footnote template:
      " Thanks for your comments. We respect your engagement with us. Perhaps, Cine Ink on TH-cam is the only channel where each and every comment is responded to.
