I remember being in a store and seeing a giant clearance bin of PS TV consoles for like 30 bucks. And I still couldn't afford one at the time as a student. Man, it sucks seeing it go for 100+ dollars these days.
It’s worth noting that this product was primarily marketed to families as a way to stream the PS4 to other TVs in their home. In Japan, it was the Vita TV.
Makes you wonder why Sony simply didn't just include (or at least seperately sell) a controller that had all the PS Vita's touch pad/gyro/camera features. Or better yet, just let you hook up a PS Vita and use that as a controller.
The DualShock 4 had all those features (well minus the camera). I remember the talking at that time people thought the DualShock 4 would allow all those touch pad/gyro games to properly function.
Playstation TV is awful branding. Prior to this, I assumed it was some sort of Sony driven media device. If I'd known it was a Vita-but-console-thing, I'd have looked into it!
it was named Vita TV at the start, but with the Vita's negative reception (because of Sony's proprietary memory cards and how in general they let it go unsupported after that) they changed it to Playstation TV despite it still obviously being the Vita TV. they seemed to hope the name change would've made better sales
What I hate: they took out the TV Out feature from Vita to sell the feature separately because "everyone loves Playstation and will buy this" just like the expensive memory cards. Reality: no one wanted Vita so even less people wanted the expensive memory cards and Vita TV. They downgraded the product on purpose.
@@alinepiroutek8932 I'm honestly surprised the enterprising hacking wizards in the vita community haven't yet built a working video out solution for the Vita 1000 which utilizes its officially unused serial port. Really nice video! With the vita being SUPER easy to mod, I'm glad more people are talking about it! I'd like to also mention two other *must have* vita/ps tv plugins: *VitaGrafix* - Increase the resolution (and sometime framerate) of select vita games, this can make them look/run better on your TV! * PSVshell* - Change your CPU/GPU speed, This allows you to disable the slower speed that the Vita/PsTv used to save battery power, this can help your games run faster and smoother. The last thing to mention would be the various plugin that allow you to store your games/saves on a SD card or USB drive, you could get well over 100GB for less than the price of a 32GB vita memory card!
Damn that's good to know. Because storage in my opinion is the biggest issue with the Vita systems. I recently got a PS TV, but I haven't even thought of modding it...

I purchased one of these on clearance at my local Atlantic superstore. I thought at the time, I should get it as it's cheap and some day it will be hard to find. Took it home plugged it in, tested to make sure it worked. It's still plugged into my TV. For some reason, I'm happy I have one.
Funny how you mentioned Sonic CD and the SMS versions of Sonic 1 and 2 being on the Vita/PSTV and not the ports of the mobile versions of Sonic 1 and 2. Though the special stages are a bit slow, which you can fix by overclocking the Vita/PSTV. Which is also a thing you can do. I love this thing.
I remember when this came out. As someone who doesn't really care about playing stuff portable but was still intreiged by the library. The problem was that it was so incompatible that it didn't look worth getting. Sony was really lazy with getting games to work for this.

I bought Japanese ps vita 1000 last month and I'm having a blast. By the way there is a plugin that allows you to output ps vita to OBS or something similar just by using the charging cable and you can play it like ps tv, but for the sound you need aux cable+ground loop.
I really miss my Vita. I picked it up a year ago and used it all the time, where I discovered games like Gravity Rush and Va-11 Hall-A. But I ended up having to sell it for reasons. I might have to look into picking up one of these.
Good luck. These things were in clearance bins $45 for a bundle with a controller, memory card, and two games a few years ago, but now you’ll be lucky to find a standalone console for under $150. For that price, unless you’re determined to play Vita games on a TV, I’d recommend sticking to a regular handheld Vita.
@@alexcallender yeah, I’d definitely prefer getting a normal Vita, but even those are ridiculously hard to find for a decent price with how god awful the secondhand game market is rn.

Man I literally saw a PlayStation TV at a retro store last week and regrettably passed it up 😫 I hope it’s still there this weekend when I go back because WOW I’d be missing out on a lot
My Dad played the Vita a lot and had the PS TV. Randomly last year I was in the mood to get into the Castlevania series and thought Synthony of the Night would be the best starting point. I casually asked him if he had it on anything, hoping it wasn't just on the original Play Station because that thing is buried deep in the attic but to my luck he had it on the Vita so I pretty much stole the PS TV off him for a few weeks. It is honestly a handy way to play a lot of older Playstaion games because some of them arn't on the PS4 store.... SOTN isI think but that is hardly the point.

I ended up buying one used for a bit under 100$ some months ago. That did hurt my wallet a lot but I figured it was just gonna get more expensive (and harder to get in my country)
I used to use my PS3 Controller on my PSP Go, the PS TV certainly has the better controller experience, since pairing the Dualshock to the PSP was a hassle.
Buying one of these back in the day for £40 was one of the best decisions I ever made. Even now they're more expensive it's a way better option than the PS Classic.
I definitely regret not getting this thing what it was on clearance at EB Games many years ago. I considered getting it since it came with a dualshock controller which was always expensive in its own but I didn't. If only I knew just what I was missing.
Yup, it’s insane how cheap these were going for around 2015 or so. I bought a white model from Japan for full price when they first released late 2013, so I already had one, but when I was randomly perusing the video game section in Walmart a couple years later and saw these babies on clearance I picked up 2 extra bundles for $90 total just because I needed some more controllers. I remember thinking about impulse buying this and the Steam Controller when they were on fire sales but I didn't have the money at the time, sucks to miss that opportunity. I've been thinking of buying a used Vita for the few Vita and BC PSP games I never got to play. THen I hear about a Switch project to recompile Vita code natively to run on Switch since they're both ARM CPUs and it makes me wonder if a couple years down the line the Vita will be redundant.
I have a PS TV but it has one huge problem, the PS4 Gamepads have a huge input delay which means I have to use a Ps3 Controller which means I have even more gamepads lying around..
I was looking into one of these till I realized I have like several devices that do the same thing. My Vita while no hdmi out, I’ve honestly never needed to use such an option.
did you get one? and yea it's really good and you should get psvita to ds card adaptor to store your hacked games into the sd card instead of the sony one.
Only issue I have with my hacked PSTV is that it doesn't play PS1 games well. Adrenaline has some kind of frame skip issue with PS1 games on a PSTV, but seems to work fine on a regular handheld Vita. Like, the intro for Suikoden when you're walking around the castle has awful, choppy scrolling, or flickering sprites or screen tearing depending on the setting. I even tried changing the output to 480P for PS1 games, but I have never been able to get them to run properly on PSTV.
The blacklisting was really terrible. In the end, we ended up with a game consile that refused to play games, while being named “TV”, but having no TV functions and streaming services outside the US.
Yeah I remember buying this, just to play PS1 games, without having a big PS3 around and I was very disappointed that Crash Bandicoot was black listed. Never touched it since.
Yeah I played Uncharted Golden Abyss to completion on PSTV. There are other things you can do, like Overclocking and using Vitagrafix to slightly enhance the resolution.
I was looking into these possibly when the Playstation 3/PSP/Vita store closure was gonna happen a while back, really wish I was ahead of the game when they were cheaper.
I still have my pstv. The vita is a rpg beast but as i got older I've been less interested in handheld consoles. I do regret selling my vita many years ago but im happy i kept my PSTV.
This is honestly a far better "PlayStation Classic" mini console equivalent before even getting into modding it. I managed to nab one of these not long after it launched for about $60, I also found Freedom Wars for cheap and wanted to try that out. Booted it once, it didn't really hook me, I downloaded what little PSN content I could before discovering how shockingly feeble the internal storage is, and how absurdly overpriced the proprietary memory cards are, and have still yet to make the investment to make this device practically usable... BUT I do believe this video has motivated me to look into it. Another very silly novelty usage I was interested in was something called the "DekaVita 7", a device that looks like a double sized bootleg Vita you insert your PSTV into and acts as a handheld dock, so if I did feel like using it handheld style the option would be there, but unfortunately it turned out pretty much impossible to get your hands on one outside Japan.
No love for the plugin or tool that lets you mount a USB flash drive as a memory card? Hands down, I think that's my favorite homebrew utility just for circumventing expensive memory cards.

I still have mine. Got it on sale for next to nothing.
that's why emulation on PC is so important.
ASMR daddy good vibes tells about his psTV while you sleep. That voice 😌
this was the first time i genuinely enjoyed watching an ad lmao
I ADORE the PSTV. Thank you for this video :)
Modded can connect it to tv and play with a PS4 controller also can remap according to controller
Not sure if you mentioned this but using sd2vita and usb storage is a godsend
Ngl, i didnt even know what a ps tv was untill someone explained it to me.
Still have mine!
First video I've seen from you...Dope voice 👌🏾🔥
I pray Crisis Core is one of the games in new PS Plus, but until then this is a great alternative!
Gravity Rush in thumbnail, instant like
I still have my pstv. The vita is a rpg beast but as i got older I've been less interested in handheld consoles. I do regret selling my vita many years ago but im happy i kept my PSTV.
Are you able to the pstv at all? You just lose portability right?
