Such a nice video, Doug! It was very interesting to see the real situation there. You're so right about that it is a great example of how people in similar conflicts have to find a way to interact and live peacefully.
To explain your situation, yes it is illegal for people to enter from the northern side. But generally it is normalized for people with first world country citizenships to enter and cross freely as they originally are able to visit the south without a visa. However, if you need a visa to come to the southern part and you entered the north either way, they will just tell you to fly off from a different international airport and into Larnaca. Me, I live in the northern side and I tried crossing once to see what they would say. I do not have a visa for the south, but they just simply said that I'm not allowed. I wasn't detained or anything, I was just told to get a visa and go through Larnaca airport. There are few cases where you might get arrested if you cross. Especially if you're a well known investor in northern cyprus properties. Because they consider those properties as illegal settlements, hence all the fuss.
Love your vlogs so much! The way you give INFO to places are awesome! Cyprus is quite a confusing country but none the less it looks a modern city. Crossing the border is easy and straightforward. Is visa required?
Crikey, when you got to the border to get into the Greek side it looked like blocks of apartments! Are some people living in the same block but some in Turkey and some in Greece?
Pls read and have an idea how Turkish villages were attacked and manyTurkish people were killed in Cypress. I was a child and even we were very much affected by the cruelty done to Turkish cypriots
The only reason they "get along" is because, after a referendum was held to reunite the island, the Greek Cypriots voted no while the Turkish Cypriots voted yes. Shortly after, the Republic of Cyprus joined the EU, while the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) remained unrecognized. The Turkish Cypriots are the ones bearing the consequences. If the situation were reversed, there wouldn’t be any "getting along" at all.
GC voted no to Turkish occupation troops staying in Cyprus after the solution, and after the dissolution of the Cyprus national guard. People are not stupid and they know what the Turkish army is capable for.
It’s peaceful and people live their lives?,?! What an ignorant take. So people are supposed to give up their homes and let a much bigger neighbor take over. What a cynical and hurtful thing to say.
Hello ❤️ I am from Morocco. Who among you needs to visit the charming city of Marrakech? I provide you with a beautiful reception, furnished apartments for families, cars for transportation 🚘, a tour of the city and its environs, food in addition to the most delicious dishes 🍛🍜 from Moroccan cuisine 🇲🇦 All this at reasonable prices (for serious people only) 🙏🙏
It's not like some see the ''north'' illegal and some see it as a so called ''republic'', what matters is what the international community regards the ''north'', and it's regarded as an illegal occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus. The northern area is not internationally recognised and there is an international embargo on the northern Turkish occupied area. Cyprus is legally recognised as the Republic of Cyprus, not as the Turkish side and Greek side. Turkey's invasion and ccupation of a part of the Republic of Cyprus is legally and internationally considered invalid, including by the UK and US. It's strange when you say that this diveded city is called Nicosia. It's like if you were in the capital of Spain and said this city is called Madrid, assuming that the general public is ignorant about Cyprus.
cool video i didnt understand why you went to the republic of cyprus and after to the illegal side. Also idk why you call it turkish side since its illegal and not recognizable by any country in the world except turkey. They say that "republic of northern cyprus" has there own goverment which is lies as always because its controlled by turkey, there goverment is literally turkey and they want to get recognized by other countries😂,im not sure if you were living in the illegal side and why you went to live there but next time you come i suggest ask some locals of republic of cyprus and they will explain it to you how turkey is a problem to cyprus and the whole middle east.yeah and something i forgot not only Republic of Cyprus finds it illegal but the whole europe and the rest of the world so it very clear which side is legal and which side is not,i hope i helped you understand a bit more about the situastion in cyprus@Doug Barnard
As a Cypriot i don't understand why for some non Cypriots is hard and complicated to understand the situation. Is so simple: Turkey invaded in Cyprus in 1974 and occupied the 37% of Cyprus. Like Russia is doing to Ukraine these days. Is it really so hard?
Whoops , Spoiler Alert!!! You’ve forgotten a little vital bit about Cyprus history between 1963-1974, you go back read more books and get a better lecturer to fully understand the issues

The international community considers it as illegal settlements, not just the Cypriot authorities.
Note that it's not just "they" but the whole world except Turkey.
i always thought cyprus was a part of greece. thank you for showing the turkish heritage!
Thanks for watching!
Really cool, seeing the differences within a small distance of the same city. Weird. Thanks for that, Doug.
Amazing video bro. Fantastic

Because foreigners can see the reality that Greek Cypriots' faults and sins have caused the Turkish military intervention.
