Aussie Here and by far I prefer Canadian Football to American Football but the CFL really needs to market the league more epically outside Canada, American Football Adapted a lot of its rules from Canadian Football when McGill University played Harvard in 1874 before that American Football was very similar to Soccer
You mangled the history. It's...complicated. Rugby football got exported from England before it was standardized, and it became more popular in Canada than in the USA, where various types of football continued to be played according to local rules, as had been the case in the British Isles. College students in the US had been playing football extramurally for a few years by these local rules, and when they tried to organize competition, the rules in the New York metro area had had the greatest sway. Harvard students preferred to play by the local rules in the Boston area, which allowed more ballhandling. They heard about rugby, but couldn't find any local teams that wanted to play that, which is why they held the series with McGill, which brought rugby. As more American college teams wanted to play rugby, popularized by McGill, in 1876 they organized an association to make rugby their game. But they didn't actually take up anything from Canadian football. Since rugby had come to Canada pre-standardization, it was played by local rules there. The new Intercollegiate Football Association got a copy of the laws of the game from the Rugby Football Union, which by then had had a lot of success standardizing the game in Britain, and they adopted those rules practically en bloc, but then continued to work them out and develop them, because no correspondent at the RFU was interested in explaining them. Since then all the changes in Canadian football have flowed from the US. Not a single detail of Canadian football can be said to have been copied into American rules, except for one minor detail. After Canadian football abolished the fair catch in the 1940s, the NCAA in the US did likewise in 1950. However, the NCAA restored the fair catch in 1951, just without the option of a free kick. So the absence of a free kick from the mark in American intercollegiate football is the only bit I know of that was adopted from Canadian football -- and the other two major American football codes (Federation and NFL) didn't even go along. Rather, Canadian football has always been looking to American football for changes. The somewhat soccer-like game you may be thinking of that was played in American intercollegiate football did not adopt such changes. Rather, the college students just dropped that game for rugby, and the New York version of football simply died out. People who wanted to play a more kicking-oriented game switched to soccer, and Irish-Americans took up Gaelic football, which is believed to have been cribbed from Australian rules. Soccer grew as it did in much of the rest of the world in the USA and Canada, making the USA a leading soccer power, but then it was more or less snuffed out in the 1930s and has been struggling to regain spectator popularity ever since, although it remained popular as a participant sport. The Irish were never much interested in spreading Gaelic football to non-ethnics, so it's remained a niche sport primarily in the New York City area.

Another Canadian first, the Grey Cup can be played outdoors in the winter, in weather. You'll never see a Superbowl in Wisconsin, but you could see a Grey Cup game in Manitoba.
The CFL needs to be seriously modernized. More teams in smaller Canadian cities like Kelowna, Saskatoon, London, Ont. Barrie, Quebec City and Halifax. With a greater emphasis on recruiting Canadian High School athletes directly into the CFL. Beef-up the 'branding' and marketing to make it appeal to the 18 to 40 yr. old crowd. Present a greater buildup to the Grey Cup, and have the final championship game played in a Canadian city that does NOT have NHL, MLB or CFL teams of its own. That's the Canadian thing to do.
That's a great idea. The CFL should expand to smaller cities, but unfortunately most of them would be in Ontario. I've never understood why Halifax, Moncton, Charlottetown or St. Johns don't have teams. I understand that whole marketing thing, but even the Toronto Argos have moved to smaller venues despite playing for awhile at The Skydome.
I agree with everything except bringing kids from high school, you have way too many guys who played 4 years at a d1 school or even spent time in the nfl, that’s sending children to play with grown men, it may work in basketball and baseball but those sports are nowhere near as physical

The excitement you always show in your videos makes me smile and your genuine friendship with Jason is just awesome. His expression when you met Jagmeet and his comment about if they tried to do that to an American presidential candidate was funny. Fantastic episode guys. Jason is almost an honourary Canadian now. I think learning about and understanding the rouge in real-time saying "that was a bad move", is literally prove he is a CFL fan now. Plus he had Timmies in his hand more often than not.

Whoa, you ran into Jagmeet Singh! And wow, you were a part of that Ivor Wynn goodbye video? That was a part of my journey to becoming a Canadian and embracing the CFL. Now living in Calgary and a proud Stampeders season ticket holder!
I live in north Carolina, and ONLY watch the CFL. I used to watch both, but after the NFL lockout I made the switch permanent. I have been to an Argos game, and how that one day I can make it to the Grey Cup and check that off my bucket list
Go Blue!!!!!! Great video! I was busy having heart palpitation in Winnipeg during the entire game. I love the CFL so much, and have great respect for Hamilton, as they are probably the best fanbase in the east that support their team the best. I hope everyday that more Canadians would buy into the great game that the CFL has to offer. It's crazy how much the league could explode if people from Toronto actually embraced the Argos just like back in the john candy/Wayne Gretzky ownership days. You'll have to swing by Winnipeg or Regina sometime to watch the Banjo Bowl or Labour Day Classic. Always a crazy fun environment with the best rivalry in the league.
I love the camaraderie between Joe and Jason. Marveling at the differences they grew up with (Canadian vs. American) make them great friends. I have watched many of their videos. Love them. Keep 'em coming!
The Super Bowl has become such an overrated, bloated, sanitized, corporatized, celebritified exclusive event. The Grey Cup is more small scale, down to Earth, more accessible to the everyman. Yes it's still a massive event, but it still maintains a small-time charm. Unlike with the Super Bowl, the fans themselves are the real stars of the show. It's about the different contingents that come from every corner of the country: From the West Coast, from the Prairies, from the Maritimes and even Baltimore, neither of which have teams of their own, but still show up anyways. You don't really get that with the Super Bowl.
It\s been so long since I watched a super bowl that I'd forgotten that the trophy is handed to the OWNER of the winning team. It's so much better to see the Grey Cup handed to the PLAYERS.
If a Janet Jackson style "wardrobe malfunction" happened at a CFL game people would be saying, "Oh, check it out. She'd better cover up or she'll get frostbite, eh."
Love this video, I'm Canadian and I don't know a lot about CFL, my grandma was a huge fan, I learned a lot from this video about the differences, it's crazy, I will now be watching the CFL more often now.
That would be like 30x the budget for our boys to head to the Superbowl IF they could get tickets. CFL is accessable and not overly commercialized or prohibitively expensive.
I loved this video. One of your best, boys! 20-yard end zones, rouges, bilingualism, and Jagmeet Singh?! Right on! I really enjoyed how much it blew Jason's mind. OSKEE WEE WEE! OKEE WA WA! HOLY MACKINAW! TIGERS, EAT 'EM RAW!!!
Bring him to Regina for the labour day Classic! And then follow up with the Banjo Bowl...it doesn't get crazier anywhere in Canada! All in good fun (mostly) and CFL at its finest. Hate to admit it, but Winnipeg has a ton of fun if you know where to look.
I'm not even into football and this was fun to watch. Regarding Mounties, one of my Grandfathers was a Mountie and was chosen to escort the Queen and Prince Philip on one of her trips to Canada. Found him in a black & white news real two years ago. You know what you should do, Joe? Take Jason on trip to Ottawa to witness the changing of the guard.
Thanks for sharing! That must have been a fun experience for the two of you running into Jagmeet Singh and having him stop to converse with you. Back in 2014 during the mayoral race in Toronto, I bachata danced with Olivia Chow down at Salsa on St. Clair. I just reached out and grabbed her hand as she was walking by and started dancing with her. The student volunteers who with her helping her campaign were loving it :p ...Jason is right; if you tried that on an elected official in the U.S., they would ignore you and/or their entourage would take care of you.
One other uniquely Canadian thing would definitely be that they play the Grey Cup in the cold when the NFL plays in some warm place or a dome somewhere...
I don't really follow the CFL but I do usually watch the Grey Cup every year. I first learned about it when I was in Toronto as a teenager and went to an Argonauts game.
I'm from Michigan, about 15 minutes from Windsor, yall definitely peaked my interest into the CFL for the first time in my life (I'm 45) now I'm going to look up a video that breaks down all the rules. That rouge thingy was almost confusing. Especially when the tiger cats intentionally gave a rouge to Winipeg just so the game wouldn't & they stood another chance at grabbing victory. Looks like a VERY fun experience.
Show him the 1989 Grey Cup game between Hamilton and Saskatchewan. They used every inch of the field in one of the most exciting 4th quarters in CFL history. Too big...pfff.
@@mrtnt3462 3 downs forces teams to make big plays, more airgame than running game, that's why CFL has high scoring offensive games instead of watching a mosh pit inch it's way down the feild for 3 plays before going for a long pass in the NFL, which usually ends with a miss and then kick it away, games ending either low scoring snoozefests or one sided blowouts.

Excellent video! Big time CFL fan since the Argonauts' Leo Cahill days back in the early 1970's (the NFL's legendary Joe Theismann got his start here, as did Warren Moon in Edmonton). I love the CFL because the rugby-based rules allow for more unpredictability and hence more fun! You forgot to mention the dribble. A loose ball can be advanced down the field by kicking it (as in rugby) and then recovered later to claim possession (even scoring a TD). The NFL rules forbid this.
CFL is a lot tougher--you need to be on fire from the get go because by 3rd down you're already facing the decision of whether or not to punt. I also like that the field is a bit wider giving talented players a little more room to maneuver and work their magic. I dont appreciate the commercials on the uniforms although int he CFL 's defense i have to say that's pretty standard for sports leagues worldwide. I like the idea of the team punter turning into a possible scoring machine with the rouge point rule. How many defenses in the NFL would take defending the punt more seriously if each time the ball landed in the end zone (without going out of bounds) it meant 1 additional point for the kicking team?
I was at the Grey cup with my wife. You guys were literally right behind us and we didn't know. lol @16:19 I am the one in the #16 Dunigan jersey. I can't believe I missed the chance to see you guys.

As a Ticats fan, I’m really happy you guys were able to end your drought. I hope we can do the same after so many years of heartbreak too. Great job on your back to back wins guys . But hopefully we can win it next time 😉
@@dogloverj7 I hope you end your drought soon too but not too soon.

@@kyle381000Well said, thank you.
I agree with everything except bringing kids from high school, you have way too many guys who played 4 years at a d1 school or even spent time in the nfl, that’s sending children to play with grown men, it may work in basketball and baseball but those sports are nowhere near as physical
I can't imagine how you would sell anyone on a second team in SK.
East coast will never work. Unfortunately.
Such amazing chemistry... I love learning about Canada 🇨🇦 lol
This was epic!
I've been feeling really down on Canada lately...your excitement and enthusiasm really helps...
The Jagmeet meet-cute was delightful 😊
He was awesome!
Ya socialists are great people lol

Great video. Just so you know, Jagmeet Singh's "sidekick" is Matthew Green, an elected official for the NDP party in the riding of Hamilton Centre
Amazing. He was awesome!!! I wish we got his name at the time. Thank you!
GREAT episode! Arkells are my favourite band, and I love Jagmeet Singh! This was so fun to watch!
Great video. Love the dialog and discussion of the uniqueness and distinctives between the CFL and NFL. The cultural differences were great to see. Wonderful video.
Thanks so much!!!
Who can't love Jason? He's the american we wish we all had as a friend.
👏👏👏
This video is the most uniquely Canadian thing ever
Oh my god that was so good. I actually did lol. My favourite line had to be “you don’t give a whatchamacallit to an elected official” and I loved seeing Jason with the Canadian sunglasses…great job on this video!
🤣 that was funny.
I don't watch or even like football of any kind BUT I loved your video. You two are so fun to watch as always ! Thank you for sharing these videos, they always make my day when I see them appear on my feed ! 😊
Thanks so much Isabelle!
You forgot to mention that the Grey cup was given by Earl Grey who was the Governor General of Canada in 1909. Hence the Grey Cup.
This was a lot of fun guys! I smiled pretty much through the whole thing :-) Loved Jason's reactions and Joseph's enthusiasm.
That was a fun video !! I felt like I was at the Grey Cup with all your behind the scene footage. Thanks for sharing another epic video !! :D I like the CFL and Coffee Crisp.
No kidding. This was more behind the scenes than we see from TSN, CTV or CBC at sporting evens.
Sure TSN has commentary from players and coaching staff but what kind of snacks did they have in the back?
This is one of my favourite videos for you guys. I was basically smiling the entire time. So much fun! Much praises for the CFL support.
Now you need to go on a cross-country CFL road trip to see games in each stadium.
And bring Jason with you.
I truly love watching the two of you. I’m not a football fan, more of an OHL hockey fan but after watching this I would totally go to a game. The excitement you always show in your videos makes me smile and your genuine friendship with Jason is just awesome.
His expression when you met Jagmeet and his comment about if they tried to do that to an American presidential candidate was funny.
Thank you for sharing part of your experiences and looking forward to many more.
Thanks so much. Very glad we could share our experience with you!
Fantastic episode guys. Jason is almost an honourary Canadian now.
I think learning about and understanding the rouge in real-time saying "that was a bad move", is literally prove he is a CFL fan now.
Plus he had Timmies in his hand more often than not.
hahahah. Touche.
I'm an American and I'm an NFL fan of the Seattle Seahawks however I am a huge fan I've been Saskatchewan Roughriders so I love The CFL Football Rules! The Rouge was fascinating to learn about. Truly Wish CFL was televised on CBC but rarely is. Great Video and Nice Work
Thank Pauly!
@@JosephD your welcome
Outside of Canada you can purchase and stream individual CFL games from TSN. We don't have this option in Canada - they make us purchase a whole TSN package. It's actually easier for me to go to a few games throughout the season and watch the Grey Cup in a bar.
and here is another difference between NFL and CFL
in the NFL first person to touch the Vince Lombardi Trophy is the owner of the winning team
in the CFL first person to touch the Grey Cup is the caption of the winning team
Fun watching and seeing the big difference between CFL AND NFL. Wish I could watch CFL because it appears to me a lot more fun, grass roots and for the people not the advertisers.
Thanks again for another fun/funny video.
Love, love this video! Best one ever! I love and respect our American friends but this demonstrates the openness and trust that we share in Canada. 🥰
Whoa, you ran into Jagmeet Singh! And wow, you were a part of that Ivor Wynn goodbye video? That was a part of my journey to becoming a Canadian and embracing the CFL. Now living in Calgary and a proud Stampeders season ticket holder!
Awesome. Yes I made that video.
@@JosephD that was such a great video. thank you for recording those memories
Thanks!
Thank you so much!!
that was pretty amazing that Jagmeet was just approachable like that at the game. THAT'S CANADA
I love the camaraderie between Joe and Jason. Marveling at the differences they grew up with (Canadian vs. American) make them great friends. I have watched many of their videos. Love them. Keep 'em coming!
This looks like an amazing time! Thanks for sharing this ❤❤❤
The Super Bowl has become such an overrated, bloated, sanitized, corporatized, celebritified exclusive event.
You don't really get that with the Super Bowl.
there's always gonna be a place for minor leagues in this world.
It\s been so long since I watched a super bowl that I'd forgotten that the trophy is handed to the OWNER of the winning team. It's so much better to see the Grey Cup handed to the PLAYERS.
CFL is trash end of story
Almost Every Superbowl I've watched has been a predictable blowout. Almost every Grey Cup I have watched has come down to the last play.
If a Janet Jackson style "wardrobe malfunction" happened at a CFL game people would be saying, "Oh, check it out. She'd better cover up or she'll get frostbite, eh."
Loved it. Not only did you 2 meet Jagmeet Singh, you both were on a CFL field. That is so cool...
Love this video, I'm Canadian and I don't know a lot about CFL, my grandma was a huge fan, I learned a lot from this video about the differences, it's crazy, I will now be watching the CFL more often now.
Awesome!
Great job showing off the Canadian game! Hopefully you guys are going to the Super Bowl to see the comparison. Both games are great!
THANK YOU!!!
Bring him to Regina for the labour day Classic! And then follow up with the Banjo Bowl...it doesn't get crazier anywhere in Canada! All in good fun (mostly) and CFL at its finest. Hate to admit it, but Winnipeg has a ton of fun if you know where to look.
Awesome Video! Running into Jagmeet Singh was great!!! Thank you!
He was great !
I really enjoyed the video and your energy. Love the open mind of your guess.
Good job
Thanks for sharing! That must have been a fun experience for the two of you running into Jagmeet Singh and having him stop to converse with you. Back in 2014 during the mayoral race in Toronto, I bachata danced with Olivia Chow down at Salsa on St. Clair. I just reached out and grabbed her hand as she was walking by and started dancing with her. The student volunteers who with her helping her campaign were loving it :p ...Jason is right; if you tried that on an elected official in the U.S., they would ignore you and/or their entourage would take care of you.
thats so funny
What a fun video!!
Thanks to you both
Hey guys! Looks like you guys had a blast at the football game!
We did!!
This was fantastic! Hooked after the first 2 minutes. Highly entertaining, thank you.
Thanks so much!!
Another great vlog guys, as a Canadian living in America, I really enjoy them.
Thank Wally!!
One other uniquely Canadian thing would definitely be that they play the Grey Cup in the cold when the NFL plays in some warm place or a dome somewhere...
Fun video, love seeing American reactions to our beloved CFL. Lifelong member of Rider Nation here!🇨🇦🏈💚
I don't really follow the CFL but I do usually watch the Grey Cup every year. I first learned about it when I was in Toronto as a teenager and went to an Argonauts game.
What an epic way to watch your first CFL game. You're a lucky man to have that kind of access! Fantastic video!
Awesome video! Was so cool that Jagmeet Singh was in it
Great video. Rider fan since 1988 here.
So weird, I was just wondering when you were going to post a video, and here it is 😀
I'm from Michigan, about 15 minutes from Windsor, yall definitely peaked my interest into the CFL for the first time in my life (I'm 45) now I'm going to look up a video that breaks down all the rules. That rouge thingy was almost confusing. Especially when the tiger cats intentionally gave a rouge to Winipeg just so the game wouldn't & they stood another chance at grabbing victory. Looks like a VERY fun experience.
It was great. Very glad you are interested! Enjoy diving in!
Show him the 1989 Grey Cup game between Hamilton and Saskatchewan. They used every inch of the field in one of the most exciting 4th quarters in CFL history. Too big...pfff.
THE FIELD SIZE IN THE CFL IS AWESOME...BUT THAT 3 DOWN RULE IS A STUPID WASTE OF IT...5 DOWNS WOULD BE BETTER!!!
Thanks for coming checking out the Canadian game cheers to you till your next game
I'm a Canadian with no interest in football; I'm just here to see Jagmeet Singh and Matthew Green! Loved how casual that interaction was lol
Oh that was Mathew Green? Much respect!
Why do people like Singh? He sold out his party and his people to be a lackey of the Liberal Party
This was awesome thanks guys
As a fan in Winnipeg, your sadness of the outcome makes me happy 😁 😉
I’ve been patiently waiting for this video since you posted about it on the day of the Grey Cup! 😍🥰
Great Video!
Although this is the Grey Cup, you *need* to bring Jason to a Saskatchewan Roughriders Home Game (preferably between July & October)
The most dedicated fans in the league -- games at Mosaic are very similar atmosphere to US College games 💯
I was going to message that sentiment too! Once an outsider witnesses Rider Nation, they’re a fan and friend for life!!
Especially if they would go to the Labour Day game. That is always wild. The closest thing to a playoff game in the regular season.
I agree. The Roughriders have the best fans in all of football. They are nuts!
Labour day game in sask then come to winnipeg for the banjo bowl. Very unique experience!
@@loganc55 I second that. I'll never be able to go to either but I sure wish I could.
Bills fan here! Love this video comparison of the difference between the two leagues. I certainly need to see a CFL game as I am intrigued by the differences. As an American, I have tried both bars, but my favorite (or is that favourite?) is by far a Coffee Crisp!
Jason had it shown to him in one game why the Canadian game is better...the Rouge keeps everyone honest and special teams matter
Not only ndp leader but ndp representative for the area Matthew Green. You guys are awesome by the way
Please tell me Jagmeet reached out with his answer! Thats so crazy, looks like you guys had an awesome time even though your team lost. Can't wait for more content ❤
Thanks! He hasn’t told us his thoughts yet. We’ll have to ask!!
Gotta say, best video yet!
Omg 😂 that’s too bad. Next time!
When Jagmeet Singh came up, I need to pause the video to make sure I see it right! lol Woah, he sure is down to Earth party leader, never happen to most other countries party leader imo
This is STILL the most refreshing channels on TH-cam. LOVE the content and would sit down for a coffee with you two any day.
Thanks Dean!!!! Really appreciate it.
I've been waiting for this one! Your videos are fantastic and IMHO: Coffee Crisp and both NFL and CFL (Go Bills and Tiger-Cats!!!).

fantastic video, really enjoyed
Did I just hear Jason The American say "eh" 4:43 ?
So cool you met Jagmeet Singh!!! I mean, the whole video was fantastic, but that blew my mind 🤯 I won’t get political here for obvious reasons, but what an amazing guy! I’m lowkey jealous. Also, I’m a Canadian and Coffee Crisp is 👎🏼 I’d go for a Skor (like our future leader? 😉) or a Dairy Milk any day. I do like the hustle of the CFL with the less downs etc, but I have to admit, I’m an NFL fan thru and thru. And, I’m a Lions fan… so you know I’m legit! Amazing video, as always guys! You’re the bestests ❤️

I remember in those old Gordon Korman books, of Bugs Potter, they had an American student, who was equally baffled about Canadian Football.
Take care, and all the best.
Grey Cup is always exciting whereas the Super Bowl can be a snoozefest.
Agreed!
Actually the 2019 Grey cup was a snoozefest and a blowout. Winnipeg won that one 33 to 12. But, most of the time the Grey Cups are good close games.
@@my3dviews not our fault the losing team sucked lol
@@Demonsouls1993 Never said it was. Just pointing out that not every Grey Cup is close, but most are.
Which isn't surprising since it is between two of the top teams.
Love the video guys! Your on camera chemistry is so entertaining. Keep up the great work!
A couple of years ago we had a cousin visiting from Alberta who was a big CFL fan. He wanted to see the new stadium so we parked across the street and went in. The doors were open so we just walked in and nobody tried to stop us. There was high school football game going on and we just walked in and started to watch. The cousin went up into the stands and took pictures. That could be one difference between the CFL and the NFL. I don’t know if that would have happened at an NFL stadium.
Nope!😮💨
Definitely not. Worked the NFL preseason game between Green Bay and the Raiders pre move to vegas. No cameras. No phones. Security much much higher for NFL.
@@Ozzy_2014 No phones? That's cap.
Very well done this is probably one of the best videos you have ever done
🥲
One of the best differences not noted in the video is the grey cup is awarded to the players, the owner comes and claims the super bowl trophy. Players won it, don't need to see some old rich guy.
Love this! So much fun had by all!
A lot of people knock the CFL until they go to a CFL game!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
my brother did until he took my son to an Argos vs ticats game on labour day in Hamilton. then he was like wow this is actually awesome. The following season my family along with my brother went to another Argo ticat game in Toronto. he said they put on a better show in Hamilton outside the field and the fans are more passionate there, but he could clearly see the Argo fans were just as passionate come game time.
I was at this game! As a Hamiltonian it was heartbreaking but great to see CFL getting some love
