Day 246 of my daily video posting project. I have been working on this project since November 2023--posting a video of piano music every single day!
Here is another classic jazz standard: "Satin Doll" by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. The lyrics were written by Johnny Mercer. This version is found in "Unforgettable.. The Lighter Side of Jazz".
I think that the intro for this song is one of the hardest in the book! In fact the whole piece is quite challenging. The intro is tough because of fast parallel fifths in the right hand, followed by a parallel sequence of fast triplet chords. The piece has tricky rhythm, a lot of big chords, parallel fast sequences, tricky fills, and to top it off, a final modulation to five flats!
Five flats actually is a really popular key for jazz it seems. I guess at some point it makes it easier to think of everything as flats with the odd white key here and there!!
I've watched videos of Duke Ellington's orchestra playing some of these jazz standards and I don't get how they can look so relaxed! The music makes me happy, but it takes all my concentration to get through some of these passages--haha. The music is very joyful though, and I do like the walking bass lines in the last few pieces I've been doing.
