    Hello! I made cold process soap today with salt brine instead of distilled water, but used olive oil only. It took 36 hours to demold, it is not solid hard but it is very firm. I used liquids at a Lye ratio of 1.7:1 as per Zany's recipe. Now I just wait for the curing time.

    • @EllysEverydaySoapMaking
      @EllysEverydaySoapMaking  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Thank you for your response. I am probably being too cautious, not wanting to burn out my stick blender motor, so as soon as I feel it getting warm I go back to stirring. Thanks for a beautiful video. I like the idea of using sea water and do have some close that I would like to try. Two questions:
    - How do I know my sea water is pure enough? Just by the looks of it? It's not brown or murky so nothing obvious.
    - What qualities or benefits do you see in the resulting soap?
    Thank you, Elly.

    • @EllysEverydaySoapMaking
      @EllysEverydaySoapMaking  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Arlyne, thank you, glad you liked the video. I think if your sea water looks clear and fresh, then it's good. You can always filter it if you're not sure. The finished soap is harder than usual, due to the salt content, that's the main difference.

    I really enjoy watching your soap making videos! I was wondering why you don't take the temperature of the lye water and the oils? All other tutorials seem to make that very important.

      Hi Doug, I don't think it's as essential as other soap makers say it is. For simple, mostly liquid/soft oil soaps like mine, a room temperature process or 'heat transfer' process work just fine (room temp oils and hot lye). Temperature only becomes more important when your recipe contains hard oils, butters and waxes, but even then I don't take the temps. I'm quite happy with my results just estimating the temperatures :)

    Hi Elly, what a great idea, we have a beach place we go to and never thought of that! well i might just take my spare bottles now... can I also ask you what program do you use to edit your videos? or is it just youtube editor? thank you

      Thank you Kath, that sounds great! I actually think I'm going to make all of my soap with sea water from now on, I love it so much. I use Adobe Premiere Elements 2018 to edit my videos. I'm still very much a beginner though!

    Elly, stupid question, but I have bought all my colours and beautiful smells for this amazing recipe, then realise that i won't be at the sea anytime soon.
    Can I use just water?
    I will try seawater too when I can.
    Thank you

      Yes, you can use just plain water Lynn, or you can make your own brine solution by adding 3% salt to your water. It will work just the same (just slightly less romantic) ;)

    Beautiful soap, amazing teacher and presenter. When you mix up your colors (micas or td or naturals) in water or oil and you have left over what do you do with them? How long do they last?

      Hi Kathy, thank you. I try only to mix what I need, but sometimes I store leftovers covered in the fridge. Little containers with lids are great for this purpose.

    Dear Elly, do you know if I can use the oil that has been used for cooking to make soap that can be used for laundry or dish washing?

    • @EllysEverydaySoapMaking
      @EllysEverydaySoapMaking  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you probably could, but you would need to know what kind of oil it is and still run your recipe through a lye calculator. This video demonstrates how to do that th-cam.com/video/AqKxin0q1bM/w-d-xo.html

      Hi, you can add salt to any soap recipe. Sea water is about 3% salt, so you can calculate how much you need from there. You can use any lye concentration. I think about 35% -40% lye concentration solution would be low enough water amount.

    Thanks for this wonderful recipe. My first loaf of soap. I tried it and it came out very well. I want to try substituting canola oil instead of the olive oil. Will that work with this sea water recipe. Do I need to change anything? Thanks in advance.

    • @EllysEverydaySoapMaking
      @EllysEverydaySoapMaking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Shirley, you would need to calculate a new recipe for the correct lye amount if you want to change any oils in the recipe. You can learn how to do that here th-cam.com/video/AqKxin0q1bM/w-d-xo.html
