- Removing Conspicuity Stripes from HO Scale Rail Car
In this video I show how I was able to remove pad-printed conspicuity stripes from an HO scale tank car. You can apply this method to any other pad-printed detail that you may want to remove from similar models.
Thanks Joey for sharing. Worked well on the locomotive I'm working on!
I model 2008 and not all cars had the reflective striping yet as it was still being phased in. I also tend to remove the factory stripes even on cars that would have them, and replace them with Smokebox Graphics real reflective material instead.
Thanks for fully demonstrating a technique that works, Joey, Keep up the good work.
Proper term per the FRA is reflectorization. I have applied hundreds of them.
Thanks for sharing your method of removal Joey. I think the back side of the knife is the way to go and do the final clean up with the swab. Take care.
2000 grit sandpaper....wet sanded....
I have four tank cars that I need to remove the stripes from. I decided against it because I was worried about the lettering but you've shown that it can be done. I might try a wooden cocktail stick in place of a knife blade to see if that helps reduce the risk of scratching. Thanks very much for the video!
That might work well too. I use my exacto knife for so many things that I just instinctively reach for it all the time lol
Nice tutorial!
Nice back dating.
good video and how-to.
Excellent tip, Thank you. I was looking how to remove some road numbers to install a graphic over the number location, and then re-paint the location as a patch on top of the graphic (I will cut the graphic for the patch), then re-number over the patch to show renumbering over graphic as the railroad do. Now I know how to do it.
Glad it helped, sounds like you have a fun project on your hands there :)
what i want to learn is how to apply the print so i can make my own wagons
Decals are a great way to do that. It would be very expensive to pad print your own stuff, though, as it's not a quick setup and requires a bunch of tooling.
